Scratch any cynic and you will find a disappointed idealist.
- George Carlin -
Hello, my name is Tim, and I am a cynic. All the breathless analysis, pearl clutching and angst can mean only one thing. Time to rumble.
I have been waiting all summer for The Bull City Rumble. It is a campy kitschy good time.
I entered my 1982 BMW R65, which lets me drive right into the midst of the rumble.
I am enamored with the "no trailer bike" concept. It changes the vibe because the poseurs and RUBs are absent. My motorcycle certainly shows its age. It has 35 years of scuffs and bruises. Placing a motorcycle in the show, yields a t-shirt and free entry to the burlesque show.
I bought my motorcycle, when Sue and I first co-habitated. It allowed Sue to use my car, 1979 Ford Pinto, and I used the motorcycle to commute. I miss those care free, pay check to pay check, days gone by. The wonderment of youth has yielded to the cynicism of aging. But this weekend ->
Friday night's meet and greet is at The Green Room.
The event sponsors are British motorcycle enthusiasts, so the venue emphasis is beer, billards, rockabilly and motorcycles. Just perusing the parking lot is a treat. I booked myself a room a few blocks from Friday's brouhaha.
That way I can stay out and have a few beers.
Plus, I wouldn't want to miss any of Saturday's fun.
Especially, the main event.
Everybody have a great weekend! I know I will!
If you are in Durham, NC, look me up. I'm the DFH on the old motorcycle. The thread is OPEN.

Good morning, Tim ~~~
Sounds like a smashing good time awaits you. Don't miss a beat! I'm looking forward to three days of freedom, myself. Got up too early thinking the party already started. I'm about 12 hours early. I'm ready, though!
Have a beautiful Friday and weekend, folks!

Work
While caring for my spouse, I vowed never to work for the man again. I am a highly skilled worker, who enjoyed the perks of the professional class, but always knew I was being exploited, and dreaded every day of servitude.

Definitely sock weather here. Not even getting up to 70? Glad I rescued my little olive tree from outside yesterday. And I do Have some clean long pants. If only my swollen (since March surgery) foot would stop that puffy stuff. And I could wear normal shoes. Crocs again.
My summer/spring of plant failure continues. Post-concussions is a testing time and I have mostly failed. I take care now, better maybe.

'79 was the last year of production, so the gas tank thing was fixed. Brandy new, I think it was about $3200. I remember the payments for three years were $117.

Was just in the kitchen doing the dishes from the day before,
getting ready for the routine of dealing with the infant and my partner tells me she's using her half day at work to have a "me" day and get a massage. She's two weeks out from delivering the 2nd baby.
I said ok, but I gotta get myself a motorcycle this weekend. She says we need a new car instead. I'm a bit torn, heh...don't seem to have the time for anything, let alone those two major acquisitions.
But am doing a lot of reading. Gotta check out Frederick Douglass's speech on John Brown. It's one of the most poetic and searing tributes to a friend and the singular magnanimity and courage of his life. What a writer Douglass is, and what a Man above men Brown is.
Gotta check out that Pink Floyd cover.

I did not bother cleaning the motorcycle. No point, if it is raining. I figure, I can throw the saddlebags on, and wear a rain suit. That will facilitate taking clean socks, underwear, t-shirt and toilet kit, plus stashing the rain suit and helmet.
The one liners, introducing the band, on the PF cover are hilarious. If you get them.
Durham is a working class town. It was a warehousing, railroad and production hub for tobacco. Compared with Raleigh (capital), Durham is much better for bars, restaurants, hipsters, dogs, little kids, live music and old farts on old motorcycles.

Have fun. Hope the weekend stays dry.
When we first got married, we had a little Convair Monza. It was blowing head gaskets every other week. It either got fixed or the fumes in the car would kill everyone. Our favorite was a 1988 Olds Cutlass Supreme. Our very first brand new car.
Have fun.

I had some really bad cars
Ford Granada had to be the worst. It was literally like driving a boat. You didn't steer, you pointed it. The hesitation was so bad, that you needed to push the gas pedal several seconds before you wanted to go. I had a Mustang II, also.

You know you're talking to a biker
when RUB is used as a noun.you
I turned cranks on Bridgeports for a few years in my youth. Most of the shop were bikers. Getting to know them I found out why. They told me it took too long to get parts for their ride, if they could get them at all, it became easier to just make the parts themselves. So they learned the craft. A couple even had small mills and lathes in their garages.
Went to the wedding of two coworkers that I hung around with quite a bit. Service was performed by a South Broadway (Wichita) hooker who got a Divinity Degree mail order (internet was just beginning to get its legs and few people actually had computers in home). Anyone attending got free ink from a local artist. I declined 'cuz ya never know when you need burying in a Jewish cemetery. My luck I'd die in Israel and have to be planted at a crossroad with my ass pointed to the sky.
I have a cousin and his wife been RUBbing since the 80s. They're all decked out--heated seats, stereo, CB, camper trailer. Since retiring they and their "club" do a lot of touring. A dozen or so of these Volkswagens with haircuts would eat as much road as a tandem semi, and they'd be followed by a Winnebago and trailer in case of breakdowns.
As you can tell, I resemble the quote from your lead-in.
There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.
At least ...
they could kiss your ass goodbye.
I am counting on the eclectic people to make the weekend fun. I think this is the Zundapp that rode into Eurobike. I expect to see it again this weekend.
I worked, engineering/software/project management, among the RUBs. I never did get any of them out for the weekend. It would have been fun to watch them disappear in my mirrors.

Minimum wage in California is $10.50, not $15
http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/FAQ_MinimumWage.htm
Workers have to wait another 5 years for $15. Jerry Brown built an exit clause to stop the increases, in case there is a recession. Meanwhile the cost of registering, insuring, and fueling a car in California is going up up up.

Supposed to hit 106 here tody - hot weekend, records and all that. Can't bake, so I'm contemplating using a crockpot, outside, as an oven - it allegedly works, but my first attempt, abouot a month ago, was a major fail.
Have a great one.
Oh yes, anti-war + green conference coming up, back east, later this month - I'll be posting something, maybe even today.

Holds in too much moisture to be effective for bake or roast.

intended to be cooked in an earthenware cloche to keep the moisture in and up, giving that crust, so tht should be a feature and not a bug, in this particular case.

I found cast iron with a lid worked better
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
My cast iron dutch oven is a big camping monster that
won't play nice with my over. My wife makes artisan sourdough in a cloche in the oven, and I make sourdough sandwich loaves in bread pans in the oven. With the heat wave, and other high temp periods, the idea is to make a boule in a crock pot which will be done outside and not further heat the house. This is still quite experimental, but I decided to try it after reading somebody's report of success.

Just to expand on that, it is up, so give it a quick look
and see if you are interested in the event or the livestream. Maybe print and post some linked flyers in your locale.

Will do
I have been itching for some action. A couple weeks age, the KKK planned to march on Durham because the good citizens of Durham took it upon themselves to tear down the Confederate statue in front of city hall. I hopped on the Ducati and headed to Durham. The plan was to ride up and down the street while they tried to pontificate. Several hundred other people came out too. The KKK chickened out. Imagine that.
