We're not here for a long time. We're here for a good time.
- Guy Martin -

I confess to mailing it in last week. I am preoccupied. I promise to keep today's open thread content free and devoid of deep thought. I am putting today's open thread in the queue early, to facilitate running off to hang out with an eclectic bunch of motorcycle enthusiasts.

My affair with motorcycling goes back to some of my earliest adult moments. I grew up in an, "as long as you live in this house, you will do what I say", household. Shortly after high school, I moved out, bought a motorcycle and grew my hair long earning me problem child accolades and blacksheep status. Heh, I managed to put myself through school and spent three decades hiding in Dockers and a polo. Conformance is no longer an option. I finally have my mojo back.

It feels good to "let the freak flag fly" and purposefully flaunt it. Riding, and rider fashion, help clarify for the general public. This morning, there is only about a thirty mile ride, in the morning air, to reach the track and set up camp.

That will be the last of the really fresh air until later this evening. The smell of two stroke will be in the air!

My chosen modus operandi, DFH motorcyclist, has had a clear distillation among friends and relatives. During the Jazzfest trip, I ended up calling one of my closest buddies, "Mom". He earned the title. I know they mean well, and have never experienced the motorcycle zen.

It feels good to be rolling again. A week long cruise, with a few nights of camping will be good for the pysche.

Have a great weekend! The thread is OPEN.

"as long as you live in this house, you will do what I say" - meme. It never worked, neither for me, nor for my son.

Now there is no house and no household anymore ...

Enjoy everything. It doesn't come back.

There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.

I've been phoning it in too. I am up north enjoying the lake - not going into it, of course. The surface temperature of northern Lake Huron is 64%.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

I threw my leg over my loaded BMW R60 in Bennington VT for a solo ride across the continent. I rode north to rural Quebec, west to Victoria BC, south along the Pacific coast from Port Angeles WA to Hollywood CA then to Yosemitie, Grand Canyon and Yellowstone.

The original plan included three other riders, who one by one opted out for a variety of reasons. I remember sitting on the porch of my apartment and asking myself "When will I ever again have an opportunity for such a transcontinental adventure?" The next morning I left. Part of me thought I had lost my mind. I was definitely outside my comfort zone.

Eleven thousand miles and thirty some days later I arrived home, exhausted but full of experiences I could not have even imagined. And now, looking back over the intervening forty seven years, I can answer that question I had asked myself with near certainty: Never.

I no longer ride, not because of a lack of interest or ability, but because it is no longer safe to ride where I live. Too many people, in too big of a hurry, multi tasking on their cell phones who literally don't see anything smaller than their SUV.

Taking a few laps on a closed course looks like real fun and a hell of a lot safer than driving in traffic. Thanks for tickling my cycling memories. Riding was one of the best things I ever took up!

Have fun out there!
I sold my bike 25 years ago when the first kid came along. It wasn't anything special (1982 Yamaha Seca 650), but it sure saved my sanity at the time.
With the youngest just out of college, I'm in the market for a bike again. Recommendations welcome. Light touring and ok on gravel/logging roads is what I'm thinking.
