Open Thread - 06-10-22 - Cool Clear Water
Humans can generally survive between 1 and 2 months without food and generally 1 to 3 days without water.
The human body is composed of an average of roughly 60% water. We are water bags with legs. In a disaster situation water will become a top priority. A little planning will help assuage that necessity.
Water Storage Tips to Live ByStoring extra drinking water in case of a water emergency can save your life.
A major disaster could stop your tap water from flowing for weeks or months. If you don’t find water within a few days, you’re done.
Merely storing water isn’t enough. You need clean water that stays clean in storage. Dirty water kills.
This comprehensive water storage guide will give you the power to:
- Store water safely, both short-term and long-term
- Avoid dangerous mistakes
- Follow all the essential best practices
- Maximize your survival odds if you’re out of good water
If there's no water coming from the tap and you don't have a well and you haven't squirreled away any in storage, and even if you have stored water the disastrous event that caused the need may last longer than your supply, then you'll need to procure water from somewhere.
Alternative water sources are:
- Catching rain water.
- Rivers.
- Streams.
- Lakes.
- Pretty much where ever you can find it.
If you find a source of water but it's not fit for drinking then you'll need a good filtration system. Here's a solution:
Berkey Water Filter
A Berkey Water Filter removes bacteria, viruses, and chemicals from your water while leaving in the beneficial minerals your body needs. It will filter:
- Bacteria like E. coli
- Chlorine
- Viruses
- Chloramines
- Parasites
- Fluoride
- Heavy Metals
- Trihalomethane (THMs)
- Pharmaceuticals
- Petroleum Contaminants
- Bisphenol-A (BPA)
- Radiologicals
- Perfluorochemicals (PFOAS)
- Herbicides & Pesticides
It will filter rain water, lake water and water from creeks and streams and make it safe to drink. Disinfect it first then filter it and you should be good to go.
And of course there are other ways to filter water.

Good morning folks...
It's hotter than snot here in Texas and it looks like it's going to stay that way for several months. Yeehaw!
Gotta' jump on the zero-turn and mow some grass. Double yeehaw!
I've been weed eating and lopping...
around all the trees in our big field this morning. This time of year I try to get started by 7AM to avoid the heat, but this AM we woke to a cool 58 F. Sure does look better neatened up like that.
Next week is re-decking the on the south side of the house, but it is pretty shady and will also run a fan or two...temps in the 90's expected. Always something, but it is nice to get things done.
As to water, even with a well you have to be concerned about power. I've got an old (loud) generator down by the well house for emergencies. The cistern we just use for the garden so we're not worried about drinking quality with it.
Water is a worthwhile consideration. We always keep a few glass jugs in our dark cool pantry. Nice to have if you wake up without power...at least there's some coffee water to put on the gas stove.
Be careful with your mowing. Easy to forget how easy it is to roll over.
Till next time...all the best!

Good morning Johnny. Enjoy your mowing. Started
reading unca bert in Jr. High and found few to compare and most of those from a different aspect. Of course, when he speaks of FACTS, he is speaking as a hard core empiricist and one of the pre-eminent logicians of all time. While he advocates tolerance for other ideas and thought processes, that is not the same as agreement or acceptance in the modern "everybody is entitled to their same facts and truth" model, merely that their opinions need to be tolerated for the sake of peace and harmony. The search for facts must always require one to avoid idiocy -
I think I know about the Berkey filter, but not the name. Years ago I saw a filmed demo of some special ultra filter and participated in a campaign to fund a few for certain areas. The prices seem about as outrageous, but ya gets what ya pays fer, as they say.

I just heard a water horror story.
My community water service extends to my property and the houses behind me. It stops with us.
A very nice subdivision 1/4 beyond the location where service ends, employs a corporate entity to supply their water. A family of 3 has a monthly bill of $300. A friend had a water leak that lasted 2 hours before it was repaired. Her bill jumped to $1,000. If I have a leak, within a couple of hours, I am notified by the community service. They monitor the meters. The largest bill I ever paid was around $150, which included my home use, water for livestock, and yard and garden watering. I toyed with moving to that subdivision once. It would not have occurred to me to ask about the water supply.
Excuse me, please. I am thirsty.

There are a lot of semi-similar tales of locales
which have allowed their water to be privatized only to see the quality plummet and the prices skyrocket, but one can only ask "what did they expect". Nonetheless, one still hears talking heads, pundits and similar domentic propagandists spouting the old line that gubment cain't do as good as good ol business because buswax savvy, and folks buy it, over and over and over.

I have friends who went out in their yard, drilled a hole,

I have
a well at 45 ft deep with the water table 15 ft. down. I am able to pump water up with a little 12 volt water pump that doesn't overcome the recharge rate of the well.
So if the power goes off, I can still get water using any 12 volt battery.
Of course, I also have a 240 VT. 1 hp. submersible pump in the well itself, but it makes a good backup.
I also have a year round creek that runs through the property that I can run through a filter using that same little 12 vt. pump.
So water will never (crossing fingers) be a problem for drinking or crops.
My suburban home in the city is a different story. I rely on city municipal water or stockpiled water, which amounts to less than 100 gallons.
I do have the Columbia River less than a mile away, but it would need to be filtered to drink.

The back line of my property
There are springs in my town. It is probable that I actually have a spring somewhere on my property. I haven't had the occasion to walk my property in years, but I am certain that there is some perpetually damp spot. Bet that is a spring.
Not more than a mile from me, a friend had a spring in his pasture and he sold that spring water to Ozarka.
Like you, I can get water, but it must be filtered. I want to research...bull shit...I want my husband to research this.
The reason I despise walking my property is that the creek is much lower than the front of the property. Walking down is fun, walking up is like climbing Machu Piccu. My ATV is toast, and I should get a new one.

Thanks for the info, and I will put husband to the task of researching it.

agree with them. Like any other religion, don[t buy it without evidence, and especially not when the evidence contradicts it.

I’m so glad that my water hasn’t been privatized
Good lord $300 month for water? My water bill includes trash collection and is around $80.month for house water. Most of Ogden has un-metered secondary water that comes from the dam Sam went wading in yesterday which would cost a hella bucks to change to metered.
I’ve been collecting 1 gallon water bottles at the dollar store just in case my water line busts. Plus some smaller bottles just in case. But I’m lucky that my tap water tastes great and is less filling. I drink water all day every day, but I have never even come close to using more a month than allotted to me in the flat rate.
Sadly I have a sprinkler line that keeps blowing because there’s too much pressure in my line even though I’ve turned down how much should flow through it. Ahh well I’m only supposed to water once a week and let my lawn go to hell whilst golf courses get to stay lush and green.

You are fortunate.
I drink flavored water. It tastes just like beer.

Great subject matter, JtC
In keeping with the meme "water is life", drinking water is most important of all. Without it you will never make it to harvest season.
I have a Clearsource Ultima portable three stage filtering unit that filters down to .2 microns and a little 12 VT. pump that will draw up from 40 ft. down.
Drinking water will not be a problem.
Thanks for keeping the subject alive as it's looking like we all may be needing the info found here, especially in the commentary, in the near future.
Thanks to everyone here who has contributed valuable info.
