Saturday Open Thread 5/24/25: Odds and Ends
Good morning, good people! I hope all of you have some plans for the upcoming holiday. For me, it is a closed office, an extra day to do as I damn well please, no hysterical client interviews, no demanding attorneys or judges pressuring me to do something or do nothing. There may be some fun cooking and good meals to come.
I just filed a probate case in Galveston County. Seems someone sang a song about Galveston that is appropriate for Memorial Day.

We have had many articles presented here about the diminution of our First Amendment rights. This link is about a bill presented Pete Sessions regarding removal of the word "retarded" from the dozen or so federal laws that involve anything related to how we treat mentally disabled people. Although it is not a restraint on us, it is conforming government language to societal norms of the day.

Nobody here would say, in 2025, a kid or even an adult, is retarded, unless it was meant as an insult. Ok. Fix it. It is the government being respectful of the less than 1% of the population that have a disability that science and medicine once termed retardation.
Then, the article continues with another proposed bill that is meant to demand that software providers, internet providers, make their product accessible to the mentally disabled. Ok. Seems very moral and respectful, and if they do not comply, they will go dark. ?
Why now? What else is our government conditioning us to say? We accept what they say is not hurtful language, provide help to the less fortunate... or else?
The only lady that can be called a lady is The First Lady. Don't wear that keffeyeh you were given on that wild desert safari in Dubai now. I have one. I am literally afraid to wear it now for fear it might start trouble.

A fine spring Saturday here.
The idea of retardation reminds me of tuning
an engine. In the old days, it was a matter of rotating
the distributor to advance or retard the timing of the spark.
Pretty simple procedure. It is all black box now.
Coming up with a killer meatloaf shopping list for a gathering
tomorrow. Don't let your meat loaf. Combine beef and pork,
substitute BBQ sauce for the ketchup, sauté the onions and garlic
and use sour cream plus broth instead of milk. Eggs and bread crumbs
act as the binders.
The trick is to form the loaf and bake it on a cooking sheet, adding
the glaze after 3/4 cooked. Worsteshire is key in the loaf mix.

would advance a bill to replace “Liberty” on our coins with “Equity” and “Diversity”, goals and theoretical abstractions they obviously value more than liberty (= individual freedom, including when asserted in support of making discriminatory choices or saying discriminatory things).
By the same token, pro-Israel people should have the courage of their convictions and move to replace the motto “E pluribus unum” on U.S. coins with their real credo, “Omnia Israheli” (everything for Israel).

younger man a friend named Armando explained to me that he was not hispanic, chicano, or any other "word of the year", but was instead "Indio". Sadly, the Mexicanos themselves used this word as an insult, but, considered objectively, if every conquistadore did nothing but screw day and night, the "hispanic" populations would still be over 90+% Indio.
The Haoli/gringo/roundeye/euro types are always inventing and revising the names which they think proper and appropriate to call peresons of other ethnic backgrounds, and they change them often, like they were some sort of fad. I was once chastised for referring to our indigenous population as "Indians" instead of "term of the month". I pointed out that I had decided that the appropriate name, to me, was whatever they called themselves, and, where there are many such names, one ussed by a group that I seriously respected. In that regard, I chose to use the language of the more "pushy" amongst them, who went by A.I.M., the "American Indian Movement". If it is good enough for Leonard Peltier, then it's good enough for me.
Meanwhile, speaking of appropriate names, am I the only person to notice that in terms or emotional maturity, vindictiveness, egotism and other sociopathic qualities, the orange dotard highly resembles his namesake, Donald Duck? Waaak!
