Open Thread - 02-04-22 - No Reset Yet

Every morning the first thing I do after I drag my butt out of bed is to look out the window to see if the world has reset itself yet.

Late last night c99 went off line. After checking everything on the backend and finding nothing amiss I knew that it was an issue with our web host so rather than call them in the middle of the night I decided to drag my butt off to bed and let the issue reset itself. It did. Outages on the web host's end happen from time to time so I wasn't too worried about it.

We had an ice event roll through east Texas last night. Being from northern Illinois, the land of ice and snow, an ice storm is no big deal but here in Texas a little cold weather and a little ice on the road are tantamount to Armageddon. Having already lived through the great Texas deep freeze and white out last winter I was rather pleased to wake up this morning to pretty much a nothingburger here about 50 miles north of Houston. It's cold outside (mid 20s) but not much ice. I do know that other parts of Texas and the country as a whole had a much bigger mess than we did but it looks like we dodged another Texas weather reset, this time.

Looking out the window, the Tufted Titmice (is that the proper plural for Titmouse?), American Goldfinch, Chipping Sparrows, Black Capped Chickadees, Woodpeckers and Cardinals are enjoying the bird seed from the feeder that I reset yesterday. Had a huge crow pecking the ground around the feeder a couple of days ago, never saw that before. The ground is covered with birds, as usual. The feeder is already about half empty. That's OK, they help me reset my inner tranquility, well, tranquility until a squirrel or racoon shows up.

If you've figured out by now that I didn't prepare any ground moving content for this open thread this morning, then you would be correct in your assumption that I'm bullshitting my way through this. Sometimes, the best open threads are the ones with no theme (that's my story anyway, and I'm sticking to it). Themed open threads have a tendency to keep folks on topic. This open thread is an open thread. So please add some ground moving commentary to this non-ground moving open thread whilst I reset myself with another cup of coffee.

we dodged the ice bullet also. Had 3" of rain over the last couple of days, but we needed it. This is the season for winter rains.

As to the Great Reset (be wary of the words ‘stakeholder capitalism') , I'm hopeful the Canadian Freedom Convoy may at least delay its progression for a while. We'll have to see how it plays out. Posted a clip of a Trucker in the Dose suggesting the next step against them will be agent provocateurs as an excuse for police action against this peaceful movement.

If the truckers' mandate demand is successful, my bet is on an economic collapse to seize (transfer) more power and wealth. I expect a digitized dollar in the near term...before the end of the decade. But like all predictions we'll just have to see. Think about real assets like food and shelter while we can plan and prepare.

Have a good day everyone and thanks for the OT!

I concur lo. The digital dollar will be the next step in the fleecing of the US. We're living in step one right now, where they pick the low hanging fruit.

You will own nothing and they will be happy.

I have decided to welcome all of Uncle Sam's soldiers coming to my neighborhood with open arms and then kiss them to death. I win. They definitely will surrender. Fräulein's power at its best.

Reset immediately folks, the big love and peace pallooza is on its way.

Have a good one, thanks for not giving up, and for a heart, above the ground moving OT.

Since your lovely diary introduing yourself and your wife, you can write any thing, you are a good man. Period.

Like that classic scene from the 60s where a peace demonstrator did that!

It was great. The contrast between instruments of death (guns) and life (flowers) made for an effective photograph..

I have to ask people how to do something? This is an important technical question.

How can somebody ensure receipt of online communications, that are frequently not being delivered for causes unknown? When all they have available to them is the Internet and its various protocols.
They have the ability to set up the usual kinds of things. But no more.

Bernie Boston a Pulitzer. He had to settle for the Sprague award.

But they were actually carnations, not daisies. The daisy was from LBJ's campaign ad in 1964...

Good chilly morning here in Austin! Looks like ERCOT dodged the bullet and any power outages are being blamed on tree limbs and call your local electric company if your power goes out. So far all is well here. Had come into town for doctor appointments and stayed because of the weather. The roads out in the hill country where I have my house are shut down because of ice so glad to be here.

I was supposed to be going for my annual yearly oncology visit this morning but the office does not open until 15 minutes before my appointment and calls go unanswered so not sure my doctor will make it in, will my appointment be honored or canceled so had a reset in what I should do.

I should enjoy the birds outside at the feeders, read my latest book and just enjoy my current life and next week will work for my appointment!

Hope all have a grand day!

This ain't no dress rehearsal!

@jakkalbessie
how icy those roads and bridges over the creeks and rivers could get. Best to hunker down and get that appointment next week.

Have a great weekend, jb!

the great reset hasn't arrived because I'm still waiting for the NWO, and I do prefer FIFO in the ordering of events. As near as I can tell, all we have is a continuation of the old Ronald-Maggie-Clinton regime, which is essentially Chicago meets Benito with a side of PNAC. (Beyond that, I thought that reset was something done with misaligned toilets and tile.)

While I am pleased and relieved that you had no great icy armeggadon, if only because that would contradict the two Bs (Bible and Baldwin), I do find your request for some motion of the earth to be a bit misguided. Really, you're in the wrong damn state. Ours seldom stops if you count the little ones.

Since music seems to be afoot, perhaps a quake simulation could be approximated:

So that's about it, it's just another day -

be well and have a good one

@enhydra lutris
chicken and egg conundrum there, mi hermano. Ponder this: perhaps both are happening at the same time in some string theory, multiple universe, Schrodinger's reset thing replete with the old Ronald-Maggie-Clinton time continuum. That's my best guess anyway.

And by way of your subliminal suggestion, I ask you to ponder this as well:

After moving mine to higher ground because the Sam dawg thought it was her chew toy, the birds keep spilling most of it on the ground and I’m going to have them clean it up before I fill it again. Filled it yesterday, went for a walk and came back to see it infilled and on the ground. The good news is that my yard is full of birds and bird song that went missing last year. I’m getting Sam a wading pool this summer and when she’s not out there they can use it as a bath and for drinking. Hopefully it’s not going to get blistering hot again like last year was.

We’ve been in a cold spell here too with low temps in the teens. It’s finally going to warm up into the 40's, but we drastically need more snow. 2 nice storms a month ago and blah nothing since. The Great Salt Lake is at its lowest point ever and if that isn’t reversed we’re in for a mell of a hess.

at the bird feeder during the winter is one of those simple pleasures in life.

Sam would probably love it if you put a couple of toy mallards in the wading pool for her. Biggrin

I'm hoping you get lots more snow this winter.

Give some scritchins from uncle JtC.

Sam's BFF loves to chase birds and there are 2 dummy seagulls there. They just stood there as he crept up on them and so he pounced! The look on his face when he found out they were made of wood was priceless! Sam told him that she knew they were fake. She won’t let him forget either.

Wasn’t her picture with the whale cute! She has 2 of them and brought both to bed last night.

Squeak!

the console device on my own work server here this morning and discovered that I was undergoing a DDOS/brute-force attack. Some script-kiddie with a botnet was hammering the hell out of the VPN server port, with 1000 or so connect attempts per second from about 600 different IPs, all trying to force a connection. Blocked 'em all at the border router, and set up my own little bot to report them all to the abuse databases and autocomplain to the admin account at each IP that they were using saying "All your bases are belong to some schmuck", as if that would make any difference- it never has before. Made me feel better, anyway.

The only person that is authorized to connect to my VPN server is me, and they are going to have one hell of a hard time guessing those credentials. It gets tiring, dealing with these digibozos. If the great reset causes all the script-kiddies to suddenly disappear with a blinding flash and a deafening report, I guess it'll be okay with me...

@usefewersyllables
me of an interview I was forced to watch at a doctors office back when the Russia, Russia, Russia thing was in full gear (yeah, I know, did it ever stop?). It was at the height of the Russian hacker who-done-it. It was probably CNN or MSNBC.

It was a breathless assessment by some so called IT expert being interviewed by an also breathless talking head. The IT expert yammered on and on about how the Russians are constantly probing and scanning US networks for vulnerabilities, claiming this as proof of how prevalent the Russki black hat infiltrations are, you know, especially when those intrusions occur on unwitting American politicians. Heh! Over and over she harped on the Russian probing of the internet.

I thought to myself, well yeah, that's not proof of anything. There is constant probing for open ports at all times on the internet. All you have to do is look at your firewall logs to see what I'm talking about. It's constant and ubiquitous and has been going on long before the Russia, Russia, Russia thing. I think the so called IT expert was banking on the great majority of watchers not having the first idea of what she was talking about. Any yahoo can download a port scanner and probe the internet for open ports and for her to say that because there is port scanning happening on the internet that it was proof of Russian hacking was just ridiculous. Not even good propaganda.

I think that that is a great example of an Expert that has learned how to Make Money (and garner attention) by parroting the party line. Like I said in yesterday's open thread, one can now find one or more Experts to say anything- anything at all- with the appropriate remuneration. Some just want the money, some want notoriety, and I'm sure that there are other, much less subtle forms of compensation.

I call my recent attacker a script-kiddie, because that's what almost all of them are. Some 15-year-old in its parents basement with a overly-blinky-LED-loaded Kewl Gaming Axe, who imagines itself to be among the Uber 1337 H4x0rs because they have dad's Visa number and someone on mumble-chan gave them a script to go do Things with a bunch of exposed machines that someone else rooted.

The logs are full of them. I hate h4x0rs, because they have sullied what used to be a noble term when used among peers. They are legion, and all of them peck away incessantly on mail servers and secured services, very much the way that our parents used to do when sorting through jars of pennies looking for that elusive steel 1944, or the odd grain-of-wheat.

There are, undoubtedly, real black-hats working at the behest of governments. No doubt about it. But there are far more working for corporations, and orders of magnitude more simply masturbating their days away in the warm glow of porn on one monitor and Warcraft on the other.

The ones who blithely scan all possible ports on every IP on the net, incrementing one number at a time? Script kiddies, or at best people looking for exposed machines to add to their botnets to do Things. Annoying pwning assholes, the lot of them. The real black-hats are extremely focused, know where they are going, and do their work quietly, generally doing their stuff by exploiting information obtained by stealth and human intelligence. In short, you probably won't ever even see them unless you work Someplace With Something Worth Their Time. They aren't looking for people like us.

Oh, well. There are few of us left who actually read the log files, I guess. Time for another Adult Beverage. Rant off...

to me back in my early 20s. My employer was withdrawing taxes from my pay and pocketing the money.

A few years later when I was the employer I remembered that and took care of my workers. It was my anecdotal experience that treating them better increased both production and quality.

@Lookout but seem to be re-populating. Last year, I had a family of them living under my house. Seems at dusk, they would come out to the yard, walk within 10 feet of me, and either they would not see me, or decided I was a friendly. They were not afraid, that's for certain. With regard to the song I am posting, I have not located Aboline on the Texas map.
