On the Occasion of My #DemExit

It’s been on my mind for the better part of a year and I finally made my #DemExit last evening after having one last convention officially as a Democrat. I appreciate those of you whom I’ve had conversations with who’ve tried to get me to reconsider, so I feel an explanation is in order.

First, to all of you who I’ve been friends with for a long time who are doing the good work necessary trying to bring change within the Party, I thank you. We share firm convictions on many issues at the forefront of change and the work you do, however futile it may seem sometimes, is necessary if the Party is ever going to change for the greater good. I’ve got your back on those issues and will still stand shoulder to shoulder with you in those fights. This country (and the world) desperately needs change and true allies are worth their weight in gold.

I’ve been politically active for 30 years now, the last 25 of them as a Democrat. I became a Democrat in 1991 when I first started working outside the sheltered confines of the county in which I grew up and was not only exposed to a much wider variety of views but also privy to seeing the conditions others live in day in and day out firsthand. I was drawn to the Party because, at least in the recent past history, they were for the little guy – the working class, the poor, those without a net, those looked down upon in Reagan’s society. They stood for equality and justice and were known to be scrappy fighters for those things. Sure compromises did get made in order to govern, but back in the day, compromise meant that *both* parties gave up things they really wanted in order to get something worthwhile. Now, it seems way more often than not, we capitulate in the name of simply getting anything done. This gives a victory to celebrate, but these victories are hollow in that very little real help is done or the help is heavily qualified.

I was a good foot soldier for a long time, doing GOTV, working for and donating to the Party and specific candidates. Of late, my support has been solely for specific candidates who have verifiable records in words and deeds that are progressive; this will not change at all with my registration.

What I think has happened to the Party is that it has largely lost its soul. I don’t mean everyone in it – as I said before, there are plenty of you still striving for the greater good. It’s the power brokers in the Party and a lot of the electeds, the people with the most control, who have changed its trajectory.

No longer do we fight for the little guy; we’ll throw him a bone once in a while to make sure we keep him happy and voting for us, but we don’t fight for him anymore. We talk a good game but when it’s time for the real fight, we just hear things similar to ‘it will never ever come to pass’ and ‘the GOP won’t let us’ as reasons for not fighting. We’ve stopped fighting the fights that need fighting and now only fight the fights we can win, to bastardize the line from The American President.

Much of the stuff that does get done nowadays benefits the top of the pyramid – those with the money to buy influence. There have been many studies done documenting the reasons for the ever rapidly expanding inequality and the corruption that money brings into our political system, yet all the Party seems to do is talk the talk, but when the pedal meets the metal, nothing gets done, or worse, things that hurt get done.

Right now, we desperately need champions, statesmen and stateswomen. We need to remember our New Deal roots and once again stand up and fight for the little guy. When done correctly, a rising tide does lift all boats; we just haven’t done it correctly in more than half a century. Too much greed, longing for gaining and keeping power, and self interest have corrupted us greatly, and it needs to change. And I aim to continue to be very active in advocating and fighting for that change. I just no longer will do so while remaining on the rolls of a Party where those in charge and with great power see virtue in only trying for incremental change that mostly maintains the status quo. Instead, I will be on the front lines of #OurRevolution .

In Solidarity,

Noelle Seguin (Poligirl)

I think I might be able to get some information I really want to see out of the party if I continue as a member, so I'm holding my nose and staying put for the moment. But it has shaken my identity to peer behind the veil for the first time this year. I am forever changed from the ordeal - have not integrated what I've learned as of yet.

Well done! A change for the better. But there is always some loss with every change, a smaller or larger sadness. Just the way it is. If, overall, you feel relieved, then you know you've done the right thing. I just signed up Green. Free at last!

no explanation needed. We all have to follow our personal compass on this journey. As long as we continue the fight in whatever capacity we can, change(for the better) should be possible.

member of any party to vote for whoever you want. That being said, if I was a Democrat, after what I have learned this past primary, I would bolt the party as well. The bottom line is, the two parties have merged into the Corporate Party of America beholden only to the oligarchy that funds them. I will be voting Green this fall and for any non-incumbent progressive challenger for any and all offices that I get to vote for. Patty Murray and Rick Larsen, both pro TPP, need to be removed from office. The duopoly must be crushed. #JillNotHill #NeverHillary #NeverTrump

There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.

Thank you for your very thoughtful essay, and for truly voting your conscience. It's been so long for me, the party left me when it was taken over by the Clintons, Al From, DNC, Third Way. Have felt a deep sense of freedom, grateful to now live in an open primary state (MA) Independents are called "unenrolled" and can vote as we choose.

Hope you are able to ignore the FEAR thrown at you, and remember those wonderful words of FDR:
"We have nothing to fear, but fear itself" - eta, and the Clintons.

Thrive in your new self description.

of the CONvention. My vote for Green justice was confirmed on day 4. Now I'm out of the shrinking box called the Demonic, er, Democratic Party--and off to places where honest things may yet be accomplished. Rest your worries, poligirl. You, too, may have Greener pastures to look forward to.

I became an Independent because I lost my "hope" after Obama's appointments - Clinton cronies - which greatly disappointed me. I saw the writing on the wall.

Actually, a friend had told me that she never votes because the powers put who they want in office (Big Al can relate). When Obama won, I said, you were mistaken this time. She smiled and said, we'll see. She was 37, I was 48. I asked how she knew. She said she was a student of our government (among other things - a real savvy woman). When Obama announced his cabinet, I knew she was right all along.

I had to re-register to vote for Bernie in our June 7th primary. Raggedy Andy, my daughter, my granddaughter, and I happily exited the dem party yesterday. We feel the party no longer represents us, or the American people.

Congratulations on your Emancipation day! DEMExiting is like taking off a 100 pound backpack: the amount of bullshit and cognitive dissonance and moral compromise you have to carry around to be a member of today's Democratic party is just too heavy a load. The Sanders campaign proved conclusively that today's Democratic party simply refuses to be reformed. As such, it does not deserve support or fealty from people who can't abide what it has become.

The more people who leave, the more people who will be looking for a new political home. If there are enough of it, maybe we can all build it together.

how many demexited so far?

I had to register as a democrat to caucus for Bernie, along with thousands of others. I took that as an opportunity to change my address as well, because my registration as it stood required me to travel far in order to vote. Then, when I renewed my driver's license about a month or so ago I again exited the democratic party and confirmed my address change. Yesterday I received my voter ID in the mail. It contained zero changes. I still have to travel 100's of miles to vote.

So I recommend that if you exited the democratic party, you confirm that the change was actually put into effect.

I'm afraid to try to change my registration at this point because of all the shenanigans. I guess I'll do the travelling and try to change it again after the election.

This occurred to me on Thursday afternoon, too...

I'd like them to see that I've left them behind, too--and goodness knows, it's easier for me to say this, I'm sorry to hear what a clusterf*ck your un-registering has been--but Florida is a giant hellhole of crooked registrars and local party affiliates. I would like to vote in November and have it actually count, and I feel like if my place in the registry says I'm a "Democrat", that they'll fall all over themselves to ensure my vote counts this time.

Ha! Won't that be fun? Imagine thinking that everyone still registered as a Dem was going to vote for the War Whore, and turned up on Election Day to go Green or protest-vote for Trump. And won't they be surprised the day after the election?

Just call me Dino. Heh. No, really, I don't mind Biggrin
