The NRA's Call to Arms!

There is a new NRA Facebook video out that I can't quite figure out. Is it stirrring the shite to turn people against each other. Is it a cynical ploy to sell more guns for its primary sponsors? Or is it something worse, as Bill Moyers' says. Here's the vid:

Here's what Moyers thinks of it:

NRA Issues Call for White Supremacy and Armed Insurrection

The gun lobby's new "recruitment ad" is really a call for white supremacy and armed insurrection, deliberately crafted to stir anger and fear.

By Bill Moyers and Michael Winship | June 29, 2017

Disgusting. Dishonorable. Dangerous. But also deliberate. Everything deplored by the NRA in the ad is committed by “they” — a classic manipulation turning anyone who disagrees with your point of view into “The Other” — something alien, evil, foreign.

“They use their media to assassinate real news,” “They use their schools to teach children that their president is another Hitler,” “They use their movie stars and singers and comedy shows and award shows to repeat their narrative over and over again.” [...]

With this savage ad, every Democrat, every liberal, every person of color, every immigrant or anyone who carries a protest sign or raises a voice in disagreement becomes a target in the diseased mind of some tormented viewer. Heavily armed Americans are encouraged to lock and load and be ready for the ballistic solution to any who oppose the systematic looting of Washington by an authoritarian regime led by a deeply disturbed barracuda of a man who tweets personal insults, throws tantrums and degrades everything he touches.

Whatever the purpose of the NRA in producing and broadcasting it, this video is highly incendiary and dangerous to public health. In my mind, it is a giant dogwhistle for the more deranged people on the right to execute lone wolf attacks. An incitement for stochastic terrorism against anyone who doesn't share right wingnut values. Which then means everyone has to go out and buy a gun for "protection," right? I'm sure the NRA and the gun manufacturer's wouldn't mind if that happened. It's not just foreign wars that make money for arms dealers. A low level domestic conflict like the violence in Mexico, which is a direct result of our "War on Drugs," would do just as nicely.

What kind of sick mind thinks up an ad campaign like this one?

What kind of sick country are we becoming?

This is what we are. By we I mean 'Murica. This is not the America I knew as a child in the '50s although I freely admit it is the idea of the America I "knew" as a child. We have always been this way, I think. Most of us have dropped the mask and our actions speak so loudly that few outside our bubble can fail to see us for who we are. Inside the bubble? Not so much. We're still the good guys.

@on the cusp @on the cusp My wife and I will be residents of Ecuador before the end of the year.

I can't believe we have come to this decision. My mother's family has been in this land since the 1620s. Some fought in the Revolution and again with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during the first time our people became totally unhinged. I have a lot to be thankful for having lived a long life in the US. The people of the US paid for my education afor a piddling cost of almost 11 years of active duty. I got everything I ever imagined from those years including a profession that has provided a very good life and now a great retirement.

I have always been a true believer in America. I very much love this country, it's people, and the ideas partially brought to life here. Only when I could no longer ignore the obvious truth that we are not what and who we claim to be did I realize we had to change direction. We can't even have the discussion much less change. We are no longer the good guys, if we actually ever were. Day by day it gets worse and today I don't recognize us compared to what I once saw. Leaving doesn't seem right but when my wife said she no longer felt safe in one of the safer places in the US I agreed we needed to change our lives. There is no doubt we are powerless to change our fellow citizen's lives.

We found a beautiful, peaceful place to live among peaceful people. This is a huge change but we want to reset our lives away from the insanity. I can't help hoping I'm not replaying the disaster my mother's family experienced by leaving New York during the 1850s for a new farm on the Potomac in Northern Virginia. If the US does come apart it really won't matter where we live. The world will be shaken.

@vtcc73 I truly envy you and your wife for getting to Ecuador. And also for having a retirement that will afford you a safe and satisfying environment in which to live out your life.
If anything happens to Social Security, I am doomed. My nightmare would be when I go to the bank and that check payment wasn't made, I would be stranded in a foreign country. They will not allow you to stay unless you have income.
I own 12 acres and at least 6 acres could be farmed, the rest would sustain chickens. There is enough room for one or two families to move on it, form a co-op.
Neither you nor I should be forced into making these decisions, yet, our oligarchy is determined to deprive us 99%ers, to force expatriation, or remain and live like it is the 19th century, or fucking die out.
We were not warned, as we went into debt for our education, that what we needed to know was how to farm.

@on the cusp @on the cusp Don't get me wrong. I planned and worked hard to ensure the possibility of a generous pension and solid retirement savings became a reality. The bastards still came extremely close to stealing nearly all of it. The pilot group was smart enough to not allow the union to throw away billions in the pension fund to preserve short term income. The bankruptcy court could have rejected our offer but didn't. Ten years later those still working have recovered the lost wage and work rule losses. It took a merger with a pilot group and company who went to bankruptcy court with the opposite plan for us to dig out of a nasty situation. The difference in the situation for those close to retirement in 2006 is striking. It was a very close thing. I could have been far worse off.

Our older pilots with less service did lose a major portion of their potential pension that they will never recover. Our merger partner is even worse off. We were near the top of the food chain for good pensions then in a few months many of us were nearly pensionless. It isn't fair, it isn't right. Only how it is.

Those who never had the opportunity are the vast majority. Their plight is yours. I get it. I know so many like you. It's hard to watch. Far worse is the attitudes of our betters who were glad to plunder us for personal profit. They're farming all of us while most of us only care about our own situation and stand back feeling smug it's you, not them. Until it is. I saw that in my fellow pilots. I'd have thought their experience would have awakened them but it has for only a few. That part I don't get at all. The system is badly broken. Those most affected still point fingers at those less fortunate than themselves rather than questioning the system and demanding big changes. Insanity.

The choice of Ecuador was my wife's. Not long ago first world expats and those from the US could live well there on Social Security and humble savings. I think they can still live better than they do in the US, far better if they are smart in their choices, but not quite as well as a few years ago. Getting a residency visa is not hard, not expensive, or with high income requirements. $800/month income or a $25,000 investment qualifies for a residency visa. Travel and moving expenses are a drain on savings but very reasonable considering. Rents, most food, and normal items for daily living are very affordable if not cheap for good quality. First world good that are imported are another matter. Taxes as high as 60% make cars, electronics, and appliances like most of us are used to quite expensive. Fortunately most citiess have awesome public transportation for next to nothing. Health care is rated 33rd in the world versus 36 for the US by outcome. Resident 65 and older can buy into the public healthcare system for about $40/month or pay $1-200/month for private insurance regardless of age. University is free. Again, with smart choices it is relatively inexpensive to live there.

The best part is the beautiful country with a wide choice of climates and a welcoming population. We'll be leaving high heat and humidity for temperatures of 50-75 nearly every day of the year. The opposite can also be found on a tropical coast or the jungle. I've found very nice people who work hard, are peaceful and non confrontational, and friendly. The population is young with 50% under 30.

We are going into this with open eyes. We know this will take lots of effort and hard work to fit in. Not everyone is happy to have "rich" expats drive up the cost of living and buy the better property. Crime is lower in most areas but can be an issue. Language and culture is a challenge. I'm terrible with language but I've found that I think I can do it. I'm well along to learning Spanish. Full immersion and engagement will help a lot. The government is liberal with a focus on improving the lives of the least well off. Their poverty rate has dropped dramatically in the past ten years and looks to be a continuing priority for the new president who is the former VP. Not all are happy he won, barely. The growing middle class, mainly young, are restless for more jobs and better pay. The others presidential candidate is a banker who was central to the banking crisis. His bank collapsed and he's been tied to owning some 48 offshore companies to escape taxes. The first thing I learned about him was his call for the IMF and World Bank to be involved in bringing prosperity to Ecuador through more jobs and attracting foreign investment and business. How anyone would consider such a plan to be viable is crazy if you know how those two organization were central to the neoliberal plundering of South America in the 1990s. I guess a young uninformed population is always vulnerable. It doesn't even need to be young does it? cough US cough This is one area I know will remain a threat.

I don't know if getting out of the US will be what we're looking for or not. There will be sacrifices of convenience in exchange for a better environment. It's a chance to reset our life, a retirement do over I guess. I'm willing to take the risk on that alone.

@vtcc73 The tour guide I had was willing to engage in private political discussions that he could not do when the tour group was present. He would brag on their socialist programs, but then he would start talking about how people were moving towards capitalism, privatization, cutting back on entitlements, all music to a neolib's ears.
He made it sound as though Ecuador is only an election away from slip sliding away from socialism and although he benefitted from free higher education, obtaining a PhD., he seemed very open to others pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.
You have a pension! Just wow!
Good luck with Spanish. I have no gift for languages. That is another reason I hesitate to go there.
It will be an adjustment. The food became boring after a while, but the beer was good.
Good luck with your move.

@on the cusp @on the cusp @on the cusp @on the cusp The two we had were college educated and the government mandated training program for guides is quite rigorous. I've never met someone who could keep up with my wife's expertise on plants. Both of these guys came close. Both were very open to discussing politics and government since it was only the three of us. Both asked our opinion of our new president before we had left the airport terminal. That set the tone of open free discussion that lasts in email exchanges.

I think you are correct about one election changing everything. It almost happened this time. A lot will depend on Moreno fixing the errors of his predecessor: corruption and pigheaded dismissal of other reasonable voices. He sounds like he has the right temperament to do well. I hope so. Either way we will be OK.

The food is a major reason to go there. It is a healthier diet than my lazy ass won't eat unless I have to. Plus I like everything I've had there. The lifestyle suits us as well. We'll also be more active while getting established and then traveling. There is so much to see and do.

I know exactly how fortunate I've been. The challenge is in paying it forward. I would rather do it with people who want to advance themselves and already have a strong work ethic. We've become too willing in the US to bitch and blame those we think inferior rather than understanding we're all in this together and working to change our path. That revolutionary spirit is strong in the Ecuadorians I've met. I'll find out if it is as widespread as I think it would is.

I get the chance to read all the NRA publications. It's my opinion that they've turned into a very dangerous organization. The top NRA officers are in a position where they cannot be removed. Ray Pensador's picture

The national security apparatus serves the interests of the country's ruling class, of the uber-wealthy, corporate cartels, the military industrial complex. In the final analysis, the FBI, CIA, NSA, the imperial military, all work for the American oligarchy.

In that role (as an imperial power), organizations like the CIA (and others) have been engaged in all kinds of clandestine operations around the world for many decades. The modus operandi is consistent. When countries' leaders (or factions within) threaten the economic (and geopolitical) interests of the U.S. oligarchy, counterintelligence and national security agencies deploy strategies aimed at destabilizing, neutralizing, and/or removing them.

Some of the basic strategies (and tactics) include clandestine operations that seek to exploit weaknesses or vulnerabilities of the opposition; they typically include exploiting racial, class, ethnic, and religious divisions within societies.

There have actually been several documents leaked (by WikiLeaks), where analysts on contract for U.S. agencies have written policy (and strategy) papers on how to destabilize governments, factions, and groups.

These strategies and tactics have been in used, very successfully, in several regions, whether Latin America, the Middle East, Asia.

As more and more people here in the U.S. are waking up to the true nature of the system, due to the fact that the expectations of rapid rate of return on investment expected by corporate and financial cartels can no longer be met because of limits being reached (limits to how much exploitation and manipulation people can be subjected to, and limits related to climate change, and natural resources), the system will now see the need to move towards the next stage, which is outright corporate state fascism.

This is where we are today. And so the same (divide and conquer) strategies and tactics the Deep State has been using the world over for decades, are now going to be deployed here.

And so that means exploiting racial, ethnic, class, and religious divisions here in the "homeland," pitting people against each other.

The U.S. Corporate State has been preparing for this day for many years, which explains the spread of pro-gun laws around the country, pushed by organizations like the NRA, ALEC, and others.

This would eventually serve to arm the right wing, which will eventually coalesce into paramilitary groups to be used in a similar fashion as during the rise of Nazi Germany.

This phenomenon is perfectly explained by Chris Hedges (Wages of Rebellion):

Violence in America is not restricted to state violence. There is a tradition of vigilante violence that is used, usually with the state's tacit if unofficial blessing, to crush dissent, to keep repressed minorities in a state of fear, or to exact revenge on those the state has branded as traitors. It is a product of hatred, not hope. It is directed against the weak, not the strong. And it is deeply ingrained in the American psyche.

America has been formed and shaped by the slave patrols, gunslingers, Pinkerton and Baldwin-Felts detectives, gangs of strikebreakers, hired gun thugs, company militias, and the American Legion--originally right-wing World War veterans who attacked union agitators, especially those belonging to the Industrial Workers of the World (the "Wobblies"). The influence on the country of the White Citizen's Council, the White League--which carried out public military drills and functioned as the armed wing of the Democratic Party in the South--the Knights of the While Camelia, and the Ku Klux Klan--which boasted more than 3 million members between 1015 and 1944 and took over governance of some states--has been profound (6). More recently, heavily armed mercenary paramilitaries, violent Cuban exile groups, and armed militias such as the Oath Keepers and the anti-immigration extremist group Ranch Rescue have perpetuated America's seamless tradition of vigilantism.

These vigilante groups have been tolerated, and often encouraged and utilized, by the ruling elite. And roaming the landscape along with these vigilante groups have been lone gunmen and mass killers who murder for money or power to appease their own personal demons.

Vigilante groups in America do not trade violence of violence. They are mostly white men who often prey on people of color and radicals. They are capitalism's ideological vanguard, its shock troops used to break populist movements and tyrannize the oppressed. And they will be unleashed against any mass movement that seriously threatens the structures of capitalist power and call for rebellion...

@LaFeminista but they won't because this video has been authorized by our government. Even if they are terrorists, this is okay now since our government has been working with the terrorists who fought our troops during the Iraq war.
I wonder how many veterans know about this. The troops training terrorists groups have said that they are afraid that after they have trained and armed, they will again attack this country.
If I had been a soldier who fought in the Iraq war and watched as my friends had been injured or killed, I'd be livid.'
This is the definition of treason, IMO. But who is going to hold them accountable for this?
Hell, NATO was created in case a new Hitler was born, they would be there to stop him. But instead of containing the new Hitler (us), they joined with him and helping him take over the world. Go figure.

As Karl stated, the masks are coming off. TPTB have decided they don't have to hide their agenda anymore.
I thought it started during Obama's tenure, but looking at the big picture, I think it started with Reagan. I'm sure you remember his policies that started eroding our social programs.
I am unaware of what Bush SR. did, but next came the huge assault from Clinton . The only thing that he wasn't able to accomplish was privatizing social security. But he came very close. He then teed the ball up for Bush II and boy did he hit out of the park. The global economy crashed during his tenure and millions of people all over the world were affected.

Next to play this game was Obama. While many of us thought that he would help right the ship, he just drilled a hole in it and we took on more water while the people who were responsible got to sail off into the sunset on their yachts.

Now that the Democratic Party is totally neutered, the republicans are trying to take away millions of people's health insurance, including Medicaid. People are going to die if they succeed.mThe assault on what's left of our social programs are probably going to pass, which means that SNAP, HUD, LIHEAP and the other things that the poor, elderly and disabled rely on and even more people will die.

The people who Trump put in charge of the regulatory agencies are the people who are on record saying that they should be dismantled. The democrats voted to confirm every one except DeVos who is going to dismantle the education programs.

Finally, the NRA released this video which I took to mean TPTB are trying to divide us even more
and possibly create so much violence against each other that they won't be left with no other choice than to declare martial law.

Are you aware of the NDAA that Obama signed that gives the military the authority to arrest people and hold them indefinitely without charges or a trial? Habeaus Corpus is still AWOL after Bush rescinded it. Also remember that Bush created a part of the military who can work inside this country, which goes against the Posse Comitaus act.
But this is not that important because during Obama's tenure, he allowed a private mercenary company called TigerSwan that was in charge of the security operation at the DAPL and have moved on to another pipeline protest. Again thanks to Obama, the police have been militarized and they have been practicing for the big event on the various protests, such as OWS, BLM and DAPL. When they aren't in the streets playing with their military toys, they have been killing people and getting away with it.

The Intercept has a series of articles about TigerSwan. This link takes you to the 5 part article on them.

TIGERSWAN FACES LAWSUIT OVER UNLICENSED SECURITY OPERATIONS IN NORTH DAKOTA Alleen Brown, Will Parrish, Alice Speri June 28 2017, 6:10 p.m.

Leaked documents and public records reveal a troubling fusion of private security, public law enforcement, and corporate money in the fight over the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Yep, the masks have been taken off and they aren't even trying to hide their contempt for us. Buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride.
