News Dump Thursday: Political Jujutsu Edition

Jill Stein is hurting the people who pretend to care

Looks like President Trump isn’t the only one who has to cry “no puppet.” A controversial CNN interview Tuesday morning saw Jill Stein repeating what some called a Russian talking point on election interference: “We do it, too.”
The two-time Green Party presidential candidate made her remarks as she defended her campaign’s refusal to hand over to congressional intelligence committees documents covering “internal discussions” that she says are protected by the Constitution. Detractors and defenders leaped immediately into action, the former accusing Stein of being little better than a Russian agent and the latter bemoaning the media’s propagandistic repression of dissenting voices.

Alan Grayson to shake things up

Alan Grayson, a liberal firebrand who ignited controversy during his previous tenure in Congress, has decided to run again for his old seat representing a district in Florida.
His decision sets up a showdown in the Democratic primary with Rep. Darren Soto, the first Florida congressman of Puerto Rican descent, who succeeded Grayson after he made an unsuccessful Senate bid in 2016.
...In 2016, he fell short in his bid to win a U.S. Senate seat, losing to fellow House member Patrick Murphy in the Democratic primary. (Murphy, in turn, lost the general election to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).
Much of the Democratic establishment — including then-Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) — rallied around Grayson’s opponent in the primary.

Cynthis Nixon still way back, but gaining ground

Cynthia Nixon has cut into Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s early polling lead, but the two-term incumbent still maintains a dominant position in this year’s Democratic primary, according to a new survey from Quinnipiac University.
Mr. Cuomo leads Ms. Nixon 50 percent to 28 percent, the poll shows.
While Quinnipiac has not previously surveyed voters across the state about the race, other earlier polls showed Mr. Cuomo leading Ms. Nixon by more than 30 and 40 percentage points. Mr. Cuomo also led Ms. Nixon in a survey of Democratic New York City voters, 64 to 21, in a Quinnipiac poll in late March.
“We cut Cuomo’s lead IN HALF,” Ms. Nixon’s campaign emailed supporters within minutes of the poll’s release on Wednesday.

Democrats no longer have millenials

The online survey of more than 16,000 registered voters ages 18 to 34 shows their support for Democrats over Republicans for Congress slipped by about 9 percentage points over the past two years, to 46 percent overall. And they increasingly say the Republican Party is a better steward of the economy.
Although nearly two of three young voters polled said they do not like Republican President Donald Trump, their distaste for him does not necessarily extend to all Republicans or translate directly into votes for Democratic congressional candidates.
That presents a potential problem for Democrats who have come to count on millennials as a core constituency - and will need all the loyalty they can get to achieve a net gain of 23 seats to capture control of the U.S. House of Representatives in November.

a government-guaranteed job idea sells

The proposal has been getting some traction on the left lately, after being floated by think tanks and embraced by likely Democratic presidential candidates including Sens. Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand and Bernie Sanders.
In a new Rasmussen Reports poll, 46% said they favored such a program. Sanders, according to the Washington Post, backs a version that would see local and state governments offer proposals for public works projects. Workers would be hired for at least $15 an hour with paid family and medical leave.
There are numerous practical questions about a jobs-guarantee plan, including its cost. In one proposal, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimated an annual cost of $543 billion for the creation of 9.7 million full-time jobs.

Pro: Haspel is qualified

Haspel is now the nominee to lead the CIA, the first woman to be so nominated but, more important, the first career CIA officer to rise directly to the post since Richard Helms was confirmed 52 years ago.
Haspel has served as agency's deputy director for the past year, having previously served in senior roles in the directorate of operations and as chief of station in a major allied capital. During the years after 9/11, she worked on a range of sensitive counterterrorism missions. Quite simply, she is among the most qualified people ever nominated to lead the CIA.

Anti: Haspel is qualified

More recently, the CIA created black sites around the world to host programs of institutionalized torture, documented by the Senate itself. The torture memos, written to justify this torture, so twisted and distorted legal norms that they were kept secret for years. The agency also facilitated creation of a black hole legal regime in Guantánamo, where the US has indefinitely detained hundreds of people in violation of international law.
My guess is that none of this bleak history will be raised when Gina Haspel appears before the Senate. Since 9/11, we have witnessed a national, collective effort to rehabilitate the CIA and champion its role as a noble protector of the US.
...Given its sordid history, the question to ask might not be whether Haspel rises to the caliber of the CIA. The question might be whether Haspel descends to the level of instigator of torture, murder and interference in foreign governments that has marked the history of the CIA. Unless and until we examine the difficult questions about the past and future of the CIA, Haspel may just be perfect for the job.

Israel

Days after an intense volley of strikes targeting Iran’s military activities in Syria, new information about the Israeli operation continues to trickle out, though many details remain uncertain. Now, a new rumor has emerged on social media claiming that Israel’s F-15I Ra'am multi-role combat aircraft were able to get close to their targets without raising the alarm by using the same transponder codes as U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles and taking a circuitous route through Jordan and Iraq.
...One unconfirmed rumor explains that the Israeli jets masked their approach by setting their Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) transponders to emit the same type of signal associated with U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles, as well as using false callsigns to help keep up the ruse. These jets routinely conduct operations in Eastern Syria in support of American forces and their local partners. The presence of Strike Eagles would not necessarily have aroused suspicions if they appeared on Syrian or Russian radars while over Eastern Syria.

Israel’s aircraft then supposedly flew through Jordan, Iraq, and into Eastern Syria before blitzing toward their targets. The strike package then reportedly refueled over Iraq and then returned to Israel via Jordan.

It’s certainly one possible explanation, but it also raises a number of significant questions. If the aircraft had masked themselves as F-15Es flying through Jordan and Iraq, they would almost certainly have had to do so with the active support of the former of those countries and the United States in order to avoid any potential confusion that could've exposed the entire ruse. American personnel, in particular, are likely on something of a heightened alert for anything out of the ordinary given reports of regular electronic warfare attacks on U.S. manned and unmanned aircraft in Eastern Syria, too.

@gjohnsit
that the Israelis are trying to get the Syrian (Russian) air defenses to shoot down a US plane thinking that it is someone pretending to be American, thus justifying an American resopnse. As you point out, this requires US approval. This is a new dimension to the false flag strategy - this time we're going to sacrifice an American airman to start a war.

If they take out Israel's jets or something like that, then Israel and the US can say that Iran is trying to hurt Israel. This makes it easier for Israel to keep pounding on Iran's bases.

Russia has been accused of being aggressive in Ukraine, Crimea and Syria so if they hit back we'll be told that Russia started the war and we have to defend Israel.

Israel is doing their best to start their war with Iran knowing that we will come to their aid. Eff Bibi, Pompeo and Bolton for their contempt for Iranians and everyone else who they don't think deserves to live in their world!

...as a tactical offense during battle. For example:

Musta'ribeen, Israel's agents who pose as Palestinians

They are dressed like Palestinian protesters, speak with the same accents and expressions, and show the same mannerisms. Their faces covered with checkered keffiyehs or balaclavas, they chant against the Israeli army and sometimes throw stones in the direction of the soldiers, all while drawing in other protesters as they get closer and closer to the army.

Then, quick as a bang, the scene erupts, and this group suddenly turns on the rest of the Palestinian protesters, brandishing guns that were concealed under their shirts, firing in the air, grabbing those nearest to them and wrestling them to the ground.

The army advances and takes into custody the Palestinians that were caught, as the rest of the protesters disperse, screaming out one word as a warning to others: "Musta'ribeen!"

Musta'ribeen, or mista'arvim in Hebrew, is a word that is derived from the Arabic "musta'rib", or one that is specialised in Arabic language and culture. In Israeli security terms, the word denotes security forces who disguise themselves as Arabs and carry out missions in the heart of Palestinian societies or other Arab countries.

It's a common tactic used by US forces, as well.

score one for the good guys

(Reuters) - Arizona’s governor signed a budget bill on Thursday that will boost teachers’ wages by 20 percent over the next three years, after dozens of the state’s school districts canceled classes as part of a strike to demand pay raises.
Tens of thousands of Arizona teachers, whose pay is more than $10,000 below the national average of $59,000 per year, have held a week-long walkout that has been the largest teachers’ strike in U.S. history and has kept most of state’s 1.1 million public school students out of class.

Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled state legislature worked through the night to pass the $10.4 billion budget. Outside, hundreds of red-clad teachers held a overnight rally, local media reported.

The bill allocates more than $600 million for salary increases, meaning teachers would get raises of nearly 10 percent this year and about five percent in each of the following two years.

“Arizona teachers have earned a raise, and this plan delivers,” Ducey said in a statement issued as he signed the bill. “This plan not only provides our teachers with a 20 percent increase in pay by school year 2020, it also provides millions in flexible dollars to improve our public education system,” added Ducey, a Republican.

The budget also includes about $371 million over five years to restore cuts imposed on education spending during the U.S. recession that ended in 2009, starting with $100 million this fiscal year, according to state officials. This figure is far less than the $1.1 billion teachers say has been cut from their budgets since the recession.

Although the budget bill was passed, districts in Phoenix, Tucson and Tempe, along with more than three dozen districts throughout the state, had already notified parents and local media that classes were canceled on Thursday, according to the Arizona Republic newspaper.

before they decided to strike. It's not anywhere 20%, but it's something. We'll see how this works.

Berniecrats or stay home?
or lesser of two evils? (in that case it might well be Rep... well someone has to say it! The "lesser of two evils" just might be a racist - if both are a form of fascist)

@doh1304

Then what? Berniecrats or stay home?

Ride easy there, doh1304! I suggest that if the Dems keep on their apparent current track of suppressing progressives in favor of conservas, the Millennials just might be amenable to rendering a third party a viable option for the first time since Abraham Lincoln was a living man.

And Millnnial voters are certainly dropping monkeywrenches into the donorocracy in the Democratic Party! Genuine progressives like Randy "Ironstache" Bryce are winning races the donorocracy would very much prefer that they lose.

or lesser of two evils? (in that case it might well be Rep... well someone has to say it! The "lesser of two evils" just might be a racist - if both are a form of fascist)

Another thing about Millennials: they know both parties are corrupt pieces of crap, so they examine the actual person running rather than trust party labels. This, too, is extremely monkeywrenching for the donorocracy.

While all of this smacks more of "DemInvade" than "DemExit", it's also indicative that now just might be the time to launch a serious third party -- a committedly progressive one. America's Labor Party!

Please at least consider that we really do need a viable candidate running for President whose politics resemble Jeremy Corbyn's in Britain......

but that still leaves the question - will millenials stay home or vote for Berniecrats or vote for the berniecrat party? But that only applies if they're allowed the chance. If given a choice to either vote for a fascist Republican or a fascist Democrat they just might decide that the fascist Republican is the lesser of two evils.

Sounds like high time to start America's Labor Party!

If Millenials are the deciding factor Dems win over Repubs every time and twice on Sunday.

Only because of LOTE voting, with the obvious exceptions of genuine progressives running as Dems because they recognize the nature of the duopoly for what it is, and they really want the jobs they're running for.

Most of what I've read Millennials saying tells me that most of them are to the progressive left of Bernie, like most of us here on c99!

If I had the cash for the necessary ad blitz, I'd be launching our Labor Party right now.
