My Thoughts on the Partial Iowa Caucuses Results and Cable News Coverage

Bernie: "You're Next, Donald!"

Regardless of what happens when 100% of the votes are tallied, I think this is actually a pretty good outcome for Bernie Sanders.

Here's what I think this muddled result does for Bernie:

  • It diminishes Biden and raises Pete's profile. Is Pete a long-term threat to Bernie? No, I don't think so. He'll still have trouble winning over people of color.
  • If Bernie's main competitor is Pete and not Biden, it'll delay calls for Bloomberg to actively take on Bernie.
  • Will Warren stay in the race if she doesn't win any states? It could be that she might drop out after Super Tuesday and endorse Bernie.

I should mention that I flipped cable tv channels the past hour or so and here's what the consensus seems to be, particularly on CNN and MSDNC:

  • The strong implication is that Biden's campaign might well be done if he can't win in New Hampshire and Nevada.
  • Certified Bernie Hater, Jason Johnson of "The Root," said that if it's down to Bernie vs Pete until at least South Carolina, black voters could, by default, heavily support Bernie. He said there was little to no chance that they would gravitate towards Pete.
  • None of them were saying anything negative about Bernie's chances moving forward in this campaign.

So, in addition to being ahead in the popular vote on both the first and final counts, Bernie could still end up narrowly winning the delegates race in Iowa. None of what I wrote above will change as his campaign is built for the long-haul.

Honesty. Integrity. Decency. Persistence. Empathy. Compassion.

Contribute to help Bernie win New Hampshire, Nevada... and Beyond

Not me. Us.

No candidate is able to face only Donald Trump and the billionaire class. There is only one way: together.

Add your name and tell Bernie that you support him!

Bernie Defeats Trump

  • Only campaign with more donations than Trump.
  • Beat Trump by more than 7 points in 26 polls.
  • The fastest campaign to reach 1 million donors.

On the other hand, as Yogi Berra famously said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” The Iowa Democratic Party had serious technology malfunction last night. When released, will the final tally be accurate?

”Des Moines Bob” has all the answers for you.

Trust me, he has never, ever been wrong about the Iowa Caucuses!

the DNC rigged it last time and will have no problem rigging it this time too and it will definitely destroy their plans for unity if anyone but Bernie wins. Whether or not they care if we vote or if Trump wins another term is another question. But so many people already believe that they would rather have Trump than Bernie. Mayo Pete would be an absolute nightmare for the country because he'd be able to hide who he is from the centrists. Just like Obama did.

They are doing this because they know that ByeDone, Warren and Cluboher have floundered and they will now push Pete.

No way. After what she said about Bernie? She will endorse a DNC candidate, probably Mayor Cheat.

No. In my experience, blacks hate Jews. They are more anti-Semitic than the Tea Party. But not as much as Palestinians.

If Bernie's main competitor is Pete and not Biden, it'll delay calls for Bloomberg to actively take on Bernie.

Those calls come mainly from Bloomberg himself, who really belongs in the (R) primaries. But he may take South Carolina as black voters turn away from the Jew and the Gay.

This is like saying that blacks hate gays and both are wrong because it's stereotyping without evidence. Many blacks in Pete's home town don't like him because of how he has treated them. This is fair to say because many have said just that. But elsewhere? So far he doesn't seem to have many supporting him.

in the Postal Service. I will amend that to "black men". Never heard anything homophobic from a black woman. Did hear anti-Semitic remarks though. Will admit I heard more remarks against black men from black women than ant-Semitic remarks from black women. Sometimes I wonder if they were coming on to me, talking about how unhelpful and insensitive black men are. Nah! Only two women were definitely coming on to me, but rather heavy fortyish white women. Hormones probably out of balance.

The Tea Party now, they might as well have worn hoods.

Don't know about Asians. I worked with many Asians, quite a few Filipinos, at least one Korean and a handful of Chinese. They were very closed mouth about politics and sex.

Two Palestinians, three if you count the one's manager father. They hated Jews. Not Israelis, it was always "Jews", including specific Jews in the plant.

So not a broad brush, just observation.

@snoopydawg I gotta agree about the black community are very uncomfortable with "Gay shit" as one of my friends called it when me and my partner were screwing around like we were a couple once we got him out in the camper at burning man. Smile

It's totally anecdotal but an overwhelming majority of my black friends regardless of where they are from (for example one is from Jamaica, the other is Sudanese) as well as the American raised friends.

It's not an outright hate, they just don't like it. I don't know why, I think a large portion of it is exposure.

Oh, a gay black friend of mine mentioned it too, something about how he is more comfortable around us than his own community.

Again, let me reiterate, this is only based on my friends so take it for what it's worth, which is nothing, lol!

homosexuality (at least back in the seventies, eighties and nineties. It might have changed for the younger generation). In many regions historically the man's wealth and self-worth and power was measured by the number of women he had and how many children he fathered. If a homosexual tried to approach them, they reacted quite wildly in refusal. That's just the roots of their culture (at least in the regions I could understand a little bit, ie Subsaharan and Central African countries).

The influx of Christian values (to be monogam) has muddied all that up, but it's still there. My own father in law (born around 1885 probably) had proudly announced he had only ONE wife (he was mentally colonized by Germans and Baptist missionaries). That was the first thing his son, my later husband, who had never seen his father healthy and became orphaned at age 12), told me in a letter, introducing himself to me. So, there you go, mental colonization worked, but only that far.

I don't know if for Muslim Africans the whole issue is relevant.

Just my 0.02 cents FWIW.

As I told snoopydawg, this is my personal observation. I would think it obvious that I didn't mean EVERY black person was homophobic or anti-Semitic.
Also, possibly my black co-workers were more vocal because, as pointed out in this thread, the culture is anti-Semitic, while vocal anti-Semitic is considered bad taste in white society. Same with homophobia. People say what they are expected to say. Me? No! I'm not one of them! (Even if they are or don't really care. it's just not macho)

Iowa Democratic Party can't say when the full results will be in

Party chairman Troy Price said in a brief press conference that the state party is continuing to review the “irregularities” in reporting of the results and has no set timeline for when the review will be complete.

“We’re going to take the time we need to get these results done. Now that we have the first batch coming out here... we’ll continue to go through our processes verifying everything,” he said.

Price said the initial batch of results would be a cross-section from all 99 of the state’s counties.

So they cherry pick precincts that show the best outcome for Pete and then simply don't report the rest.

In the process they disenfranchise 38% of Iowa Democratic primary voters - a big chunk of those Bernie voters. Sound familiar?

To paraphrase Stalin:

It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who DON'T count the votes decide everything.

To me, these IDP reporting shenanigans are an even bigger scandal than the app.

@Bollox Ref I've read that they had their own app, which is most likely why this whole catastrophe took place; can't trumpet results that the Sanders campaign can easily refute. Honestly, I don’t think it matters anyway. I really don’t think her 2016 endorsement moved things in any meaningful way. As for her supporters now, I think I’ve seen they’re more likely to have Sanders as a second choice. And her hardcore supporters are 10%ers who I’m not sure would vote Sanders regardless of an endorsement or not.
