Chocolate Candy Day, Yeah.
OK, that's over with, so on with it.
A tough day today, X-Rays, Endangered Species Act, Pops Staples, Earl (Fatha) Hines, Johnny Otis, Maurice Ravel and many others, but I'm going with the Greek dude: Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes. As a kid he wanted to be a band leader, as in "big band" and he more or less did. He also had a hit with Harlem Nocturne and wrote another hit, Willie and the Hand Jive, discovered Sugar Pie DeSanto and many others, and wound up in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as Johnny Otis. Here's some of what da Wiki has to say:
Johnny Otis ... was an American singer, musician, composer, arranger, bandleader, talent scout, disc jockey, record producer, television show host, artist, author, journalist, minister, and impresario. He was a seminal influence on American R&B and rock and roll. He discovered numerous artists early in their careers who went on to become highly successful in their own right, including Little Esther Phillips, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, Johnny Ace, Jackie Wilson, Little Willie John, Hank Ballard, and The Robins (who eventually changed their name to The Coasters), among many others. Otis has been called the "Godfather of Rhythm and Blues".
He grew up in Berkeley, CA, where he famously decided to live and perform as a member of the black community. He later wrote "As a kid I decided that if our society dictated that one had to be black or white, I would be black." His full wikipedia entry is moderately awe inspiring, as was his career and impact on R&B and Rock.

Good morning
A cloudy but warm(er) one here today. Several chores on tap, but it is nice to have some productive things to do during the stay at home period.
No chocolate in stock. We do eat the 75% dark chocolate sometimes. The Swiss groceries had entire aisles of chocolate.
I like the idea of call a friend day. We've been making lots of calls over the holidays.
Hope you all have a good one. Thanks for the OT, el.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Good morning Lookoout. Chores have the benefit
of minimizing idle time by allowing one to sit and say damn, I should be doing 'x', well, maybe right after I finish this (puzzle or whatever). It's my week to cook, so I can always de-prioritize all other chores because food, though cleaning the grill after last night's salmon is still high on the list. The garden, of course, is perpetual, and the apple is still raining leaves and ... but, luckily for me, it's my OT day, so I get to pop in here now and then to check on it and ...
Hope you had a great holiday too.

Productive things
We techies can always build a new machine. Or just tinker with the machines we have.
I know we are kind of nuts.
"Hey Jim, there's a hot babe in the back room, doing everybody."
"No thanks Sam, I'm busy torquing down the head bolts on this engine."
That's a techie.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
Good morning voice. There are, in fact,
2 gadget tests scheduled for later and one ongong, so I do understand that. There is also some minor construction/modification to be squeezed in sometime this week.

G'mornin', EL. I woke up this morning
with the sigh of relief that I reserve for whenever Christmas is finally over every year. My wife loves it, but I'm a bit of a humbug. All the joy got sucked out of Christmas for me years ago when I had to do the annual command performances and dutifully show up to family holiday functions even though I had no money to spend on travel, and no time off from work, so I ended up taking it unpaid. Damned near bankrupted myself doing that, even before the crash really finished the job.
Family's all gone now, except for my wife and I, so there are no more command performances. But I still haven't made my peace with it, even after all these years. It still just seems to me to be a downright lousy thing to do to an otherwise perfectly fine day off. Guess I'll have to get over it eventually...
Chocolate, on the other hand, is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. So that's a great topic for pulling those of us who are just flat *over* Christmas out of our annual funk. I'll take a really nice Lindt bar and a shot of Grand Marnier in a warmed snifter, thank you very much!
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
Good morning usefewer. We're also glad it's over,
a non so welcome interruption in our lives that also requires work, prep and cleanup, though it can also involve mimosas and other treats.
I'll take a really nice Lindt bar and a shot of Grand Marnier in a warmed snifter, thank you very much! - I really hear that, I really do.

Christmas was not the same without kids
Not even grown up kids.

I've always loved Ravel's Bolero
There is a story about him. He was in the concert audience when a new arrangement of Bolero was being played. Ravel stopped the performance yelling that was not how it was to be played. He then directed its playing himself by dancing the song.
Good morning Granma. Great story. I too love
Ravel's Bolero, and don't, offhand, know anybody who doesn't.
Don't know if this will embed, and if it does, if it will play but here's an interesting take:
that didn't, but I found a you tube

Amazing traffic jam on the Cello
I am so glad Christmas is over, now I wait for New Year to be over. I am so scared about the evictions to come. It could be a life or death matter for many.
May you all have shelter, food, warmth and friends.
Thanks for the chocolates!
Uh, I just thought what would happen if we all came down the White House and rock to the tunes Johnny Otis. Some could just faint and get a heart attack ...

Good morning mimi. Glad you liked the tunes despite
the traffic jam, and thanks for the chocolates. Yeah, we coould certainly have quite a celebration with Johnny Otis' output - there's lots more out there. We covered the whole spectrum, jass, blues, rhythm and blues - rock and roll right on up through funk and soul.

good afternoon el
et al
Hope the rain keeps coming - in small doses. We got about a quarter of an inch. Loved the cello piece. Thanks for that. The numbers here are going nuts. All the hospitals are full - SC, Watsonville, Salinas. What about up your way?
Here is a relatively new video on feedback loops. 13 minutes
Very basic but a good educational tool.

Take good care everyone. Thanks el, stay safe.

Good afternoon magi. Rained overnight here, not too heavily
from the looks of it.
Xmas eve, the Merc said that Bay Area ICU capacity (vacancies) was 11.4% but I don't know what 100% is, so that's not overly informative Same article said under 1400 for the whole state, I think. Channel 7 says:
Alameda: 35.9% of ICU beds available, as of Dec. 28
Contra Costa: 13.8% of ICU beds available, as of Dec. 28
We just might have a lot more beds than other places, 2 large new Kaiser facilities came on line within the last few years, San Leandro and Dublin.

Those are stats from my neighbor
who is a nurse and is doing thE local stats for Kaiser. We have no open beds in SC county. Friend I walk with has a daughter who works in the covid ward in Watsonville. Her stories are horrific. And Newsom is trying to increase their case load.

Great ensemble Cello, el,
cheers.
Lazy day in the sun, lots of phone calls, tired out, now.
Son is building a new computer and i learn from each conversation. He's been at it since HS.
All's quiet and all's well that ends, well.
Have a good evening.
Good evening smiley. Glad to hear that you're kicked back,
you need it.

Thanks for the fine music selections
The cello ensemble is impressive, to be sure, but my favorite was the Lionel Hampton and drummer piece. The energy and sheer joy of playing radiated from both and had me grinning ear to ear. Thanks, I needed that!

Good morning ovals, glad you liked the music.
That was Johnny Otis on drums with Hampton. Hampton was something of a regular on the Johnny Otis Show. Johnny played Drums, Vibes, Piano and maybe more. His kid Shuggie is a world class session guitarist who is also multi-instrumentalist and was pulled in to do some stuff on Super Session when he was in his early teens (he's that good).

Any day a good day for chocolate!
My last Lindt bar is history but luckily my wife had mercy and so for Christmas gave me a two pound box of dark chocolate orange creams, special ordered from Stover's. Lindt's chocolate is better, but Stover's dark will do just fine.
Wish I'd known about Johnny Otis earlier in my life - as it turns out I've been listening to his influence for nearly all of it.
Good morning Traveler. Castro Valley has 2 choclatiers -
not bad for an unincorporated semi-bedroom community of 63,000. If you like fudge, there is some blindingly fantastic dark chocolate fudge at the Bighorn Fudge Company in Borrego Springs, CA. They ship, too, but its a tad pricey.
As to Johnny Otis, I was lucky to learn of his existence young, and my knowledge of his influence and music just kept growing and growing. It's not everybody who gets inducted into the R&R hall of fame that has Etta James for a presenter.

I love white chocolate, which isn't chocolate at all.
I was at a shop in Ecuador where they specialized in the chocolate candies of their country.
I found some Lindt white chocolate. I hid my purchase from the travel group folks. It was sacrilegious.
Have a good one, and thanks for the OT.

Good morning otc. White chocolate might not be real
chocolate, but it is indeed damn good stuff. I do, however, somewhat prefer the real stuff, dark, about 73% or better.

*Really* dark,
and accompanied by a monster jammy late harvest Zinfandel, like maybe the Chateau Potelle Zinie... I don't think they make it any more, but it was wonderful while it was there.
Damn. There goes my morning's work, pining for wine and chocolate.

As I recall, city manager form of government tends
towards that, almost as if that were the purpose of instituting such a system, Usually "city manager" means "appointed strong man" put in place to relieve the legislative body of the need to get involved in actually running things.
