Monday OT: 02/15/21 is Susan B Anthony Day
Prickle-Prickle, Chaos 39, 3187 YOLD
And let us not forget 113.0.8.4.18 mlc (the Mayan Long Count)
It's Presidents' Day. This holiday never falls on the birthday of any actual US President. Once upon a time, there was a federal holiday celebrating George Washington's Birthday. In addition, in some states, like California, schools and some businesses closed on Lincoln's Birthday as well. In 1971, they decided to move most Federal Holidays to Mondays in order to create more three day weekends and renamed Washington's birthday "Presidents' Day". While they were at it, they gratuitously declared it to include Lincoln's birthday, not at the time a federal holiday, and thereby preempted any attempt at making it one, while shafting all the kids in places like California, though not all such states immediately eliminated poor old Abe. Though not a Bank Holiday, it is also Susan B. Anthony Day, and given the above foofaraw, I personally prefer to celebrate it instead. Besides, who knows who any of our Presidents would've been had not huge swaths of the populace been disenfranchised for most of the nation's history.
Remember the Maine Day. The Maine was a somewhat slow and clumsy "battleship" that was pretty much obsolete by the time it was finished. It was eventually sent to Cuba to look after US interests. As we know, that means to try to gain control of a nation or its resources; we have no legitimate interests in any foreign country as a nation. It blew up in Havana harbor on February 15, 1889. The tale is confused and convoluted, and US history is very much a cloud of propaganda and disinformation, which makes things worse. The current story seems to be that in and within the government it was initially and primarily believed to have been an accident, with some dissenters, but that the yellow press pressed and propagandized for war using it for sloganeering. The US government might've been bothered by Spanish Human Rights violations (sure, sure we were, in 1898) and had no interest in annexing Cuba the way we had just annexed Hawaii, well, maybe a bit, perhaps. At any rate, with that as a battle cry, we went to war with Spain and took over Cuba, the Philippines and I forget what all else, but only because we had to. I mean what the hell, they blew up our ship, unless it was an accident, or a pissed off sailor, or a false flag by US commercial interests. As usual, the finger of cui bono certainly points nowhere at all near Spain, but that question is never raised in imperialist nations for a reason.

WAR!
There is one day each year, December 25th, on which many purport to celebrate "Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men". Well, this ain't it McGee, this is one of the other 364 (or 5) during which we celebrate, perpetuate, commit and commit ourselves to WAR!, endless and exalted. The foundation of our economy, the employer of ever so many and the source of our eternal pride, WAR! So remember, though it may not be good for living things, it is what keeps this country running and keeps its ruling elites happy, so hooray for war!
It's an open thread, so do your thing

good morning
I'm thrilled to report no ice this AM. A cold 38 F drizzle is predicted to grow into a full fledged rain. Got to run a few errands in town so just a drive by comment to say "Hey" and thanks for the OT.

Good morning Lookout
Glad to hear you ducked the freeze. Hope you're staying safe running errands in the rain, always seems a touch more risky due to visibility issues.

Where were you on F15?
I went to the march in S.F with around 65,000 other strangers that day, it's hard to remember. I do recall walking behind the cloud from Telluride CO, they were great. "Smoke Pot, not Bush!" Huh? LOL Also, the cheer leading squad, dressed up with the pom-poms and all. "Bush is a moron! Don't let him get his war on! YES
Next day I was stunned to find out around 15 million or so worldwide joined together with us to say NO WAR!, and all Bush could manage in response was "I don't govern by focus group." or some similar duopoly bullshit. Aargh! Kick my guts. Forget it. There's a reason this screenshot is called vastcontinuity.jpg, now add Trump then Biden. jhfc

Good morning eyo. Oakland and also corner of Redwood Rd and
Castro Valley Blvd. Great "Presidents" graphic and I love the embedded theme.
I almost used that Feynman quote myself, but I thought that the one I went with was more entertaining, which is, of course, part of my job with this.

I got a referral for this kind of treatment once, decided against it at the time but still might give it a try. Pretty far down the list of options, I'd rather do mushrooms (I think?). LOL

Lost in all the noise of the pandemic and presidential politics:
Passed from us in September 2020: Ron Cobb, known for his cartoons in the alternative press of the 1960s; personal friend of folk singer Phil Ochs; went on to do movie work with H.R. Giger (Alien); on the day of his 83rd birthday.

Biden Approved Texas Emergency Declaration Yesterday
I just found this link over on the BBC, looking for news of Germany because mimi is locked down too, I can't find any English speaking German newspapers and no spreken ze deutch. Sheesh it is quiet around here. When the batteries run out, people discover new and interesting things like fun and games, I hope.

It is, indeed, cold in Texas.
So far, no burst water pipes, and the lights are on.
I wonder where the emergency funds from the feds will wind up?
A deadly storm to enrich the usual and customary grifters, no doubt.
The low today is predicted to be 11 degrees. My brother's circuit breaker tripped during the night from the furnace running so high and hard.

do get c99 mail. Been off and about around here, just checked my message and got that thread. I'm thinking maybe somebody could write a Thursdaybot, maybe in Javascript ;-), or, since there are only 52 weeks in a year, run through the I Ching from 1 to 64.

Hola el

5” of snow in Austin at daughter’s house. 10 at a friend’s hose there. Here moderate rain overnight and ongoing until 2p. Here we need much more.
Polar vortex is now circulating over Greenland not the north pole. There at the NP the tropopause has risen and acts as a dome from which the air slides. Wheee. Causing havoc. Jet stream is extremely wonky (technical def) now. A few times the jet stream has slipped over the equator. Not good. Basically it will cancel out seasons. [this dialogue is what I cannot turn off. Brain should provide diatribe on/off spigots.]
So we need to figure out how to grow food in buildings and move people away from the coast. Small communities of tiny homes (not my idea but a good one) which include food growing facilities.
But how to grow grains in warehouses? Veggies are already being done that way. Inquiring minds want to know. Hmmm?
K, have a good one and stay safe. This covid stuff is getting really tiresome.

Evening magi. I've thought about gardening in buildings for
ages, solar roofs, compost as much as possible, filter out bugs outside, after introducing pollinators, need reliable water and probably more electricity than the solar will provide. Grains are a problem, but with mechanization and artificial light, they can be grown several layers per story in giant tray like things, but outside would be vastly preferable - just very strong and well insulated supersized greenshouses. Just thoughts.
Yeah, its a real pita that the mind gives one no rest.

It got down to -16degF
here in the Denver area yesterday. But it is up to a balmy +32degF now, so we are returning to the normal flow of winter weather. Just hang on, and warmerish weather will return. Ain't chaos great?
I remember years ago, I was a member of the Eastern Airlines Weekender Club when living in Boston (guess that dates me a bit). I got a call from them that they had a lot of empty seats available heading to Florida one Friday afternoon in February or March, so it was only $50 round trip if I could get to Logan in a hurry. I was sick to death of the continuous New England 33degF freezing rain winter, so I grabbed a bathing suit and beat feet to the airport. And it didn't get above 29degF for the whole weekend in Daytona Beach. Oh, well- at least I could listen to the surf on the beach, as I sat bundled up in all the extra blankets as the frost formed on the non-insulated windows of the non-heated cheap hotel they included in the deal...
Alcohol helped.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
Good evening ufs. Hilarious story about the Fl trip.
