Saturday Open Thread -8/2/25: Odds and Ends
Submitted by on the cusp on Sat, 08/02/2025 - 7:00am

Good morning, good people! (Assuming we are here and not nuked.)
So, Friday afternoon I figured out why Dear One had some symbiotic relationship with some birds. Saw it. Descriptions of what I saw will be in the comments.
I have some travel memories to share.
Check out my comments below for my travel musings.
Meanwhile, this is an open thread, which means all topics are welcome.
So sorry for the piecemeal stuff, but life intrudes!
Don't let my scattered life/thoughts/reading stop you from sharing with us what you believe we need to know.

Good morning...
A pleasant 70F morning. We've had needed rain the last two days, and more called for next week. Highs in the 80's next next several days, so all is well in the holler.
Went to a thin trade day. Didn't buy a thing, but took the recycling and went to the grocery.
Hope all is well. Thanks for the OT!

Good morning, LO!
I am watching 3 deer just grazing along, getting drenched.
I am curious about Putin's reaction to the Trump subs saga. Trump is too stupid and irresponsible to handle a BB gun, but it is what it is. It could have been drunk Kamala in charge.
Enjoy your day, dear friend!

Hey, Cap'n!
I am at home sweet home, practicing duck and cover. Are you on the road or at your destination, travelin' man?
Drop in some pictures if you can, my friend.

Good morning otc. Finishing packing and loading up for
a run up to wine country. One of our very long-time favorite wineries is having an invitation only party after which we will overnight up there in a local motel and dribble back home sometime Sunday afternoon or evening. Zo, no matter what my 'puter says, I'm offline 'ti probably Monday. This means cooking all next week without a visit to farmers' market for good fresh veggies. Oh well.
Sorry to hear about Flaco, but he outlasted the average and will live forever through his music. Hope he gets a good send-off.
Holld the fort, have a great weekend, be wall and have a good one.

Good morning, el!
Too bad about the fresh veggies situation. Be creative with meat and bread, friend.
Enjoy the wine and scenery, el. It is good to get a break from chaos.
See ya Monday!

Good morning, good people!
So, when I went on my first safari, it was in S. Africa. The tee shirt looked like it would help me absorb into the local culture. The guide needed some confidence that I was not a total dumb ass.

Epstein's death in prison video
Top comment-
I don't think this host's credentials fit the crime scene analysis, but the video has excerpts of an IG report I found quite interesting and typical in unreliability. IG reports that I had seen on relatively few occasions in government seemed to me to be attempted political fixes to situations obviously embarrassing to authorities. I've heard a couple of people styling themselves as "Epstein experts" say Epstein's death is a distraction from the current principal issues concerning the "Epstein files." I don't think so. Maybe it's such a labyrinthine trail that it isn't worth it to pursue the matter? So a suspected homicide is not worthy of consideration?
Anyway, after much reading, amusing myself inside yesterday because of the excessive heat here Ms. So forced me to go out for a walk after 730 pm. I was pleasantly surprised to see this spectacular cloud to the south behind the apartments. There was some chain lightning near the eastern base, so after my recent experience I hurried to go inside even though it looked to be striking a few miles away. The width of the photo is wrong, I think. I had turned the phone sideways to get a wider view not reflected in the image here. ( I'm not a good photographer like several here who post in the Friday nights photo edition with SP). Today the neighborhood snake stopped by for visit, didn't stay long.
Thanks for the OddsnEnds OTC!

Good afternoon, soryang!
I just read today that of the 12 NYPD officers that viewed Anthony Weiner's child porn files, 9 of them committed suicide.
Well, stay away from lightning, friend. Our morning t-storm is still ongoing. We absolutely must go grocery shopping. However, I have no desire to dodge lightning while pushing a cart.
Thanks for the tune!

I'm reading Grassroots Fascism: The War Experience of the Japanese People. The thesis is that large sections of ordinary Japanese people supported this, namely conquering China. I think we're in a similar situation now, where generals, media, Senator Graham etc., seem to be promoting the idea they can win a general war much as the Japanese thought back then. With all the golly gee whiz militarist projection going on from US sources, generally, it stuck me how WWIIish the current environment is.

When I wear some tee shirt
I bought while traveling, it brings back many memories. Like the one below. Romania. The castle of Vlad the Impaler, a stroll onto the field where the thousands of Ottomans were tortured to death. As they died on the poles, vultures picked out their eyes, ate off their genitals. When the Ottoman soldiers saw that, the war was over. Those Muslims with no eyes or genitals would not enjoy their 72 virgins.
The parallel to today, as IDF soldiers shoot off little Palestinian boys' genitals, is not lost on me.

Yesterday, I was treated to an air show.
As JtC mowed a couple of acres, and was joined by 3 Mississippi kites. Their favorite food is katydids, and as he mowed, the 'dids were hopping up behind him. After he kicked them up, mostly intentionally, he could turn around, see a kite swoop down and grab a 'did in flight. They would fly up close to him, and he would raise a fist, celebrate with them.
It was so remarkable, it is impossible to describe. I should get a video camera. The aerobatics is like nothing I have seen in my life.
No wonder he doesn't find mowing boring!
Meanwhile, The Fab 4 deer are out grazing early today. It is cloudy and actually cool, perfect for them.

Thanks
Wanted to make sure I finally got around to say THANK YOU for the excellent legal advice you gave me about going around the cops to get something done about the meth lab next door. I even had a young cop tell me that they couldn't do much about it. Why? I have no idea.
Anyways I called the state probation office and had a long talk with them. This cop surprisingly even backed me up. When he went over there the meth head screamed at him. Don't yell at cops. I could hear him at my place. A few days later, he was back in jail.
He had 3 years probation and had just come off the strictest kind. I guess he thought he could go wild now. Ha Ha. I sleep a whole lot better now.
