Monday Open Thread: October 15 is the 288th day of the year
October 15 is also Pungenday, Bureaucracy 69, 3184 YOLD (discordian)
So, in the earlier history of this OT series I beat the numerical significance of 15 and 15 related items and phenomenon to death. I've never addressed 288 before, however. Perhaps that's because 288 is
Twenty years of schooling and they put you on the day shift, look out kid,
...
On this day in:
1783 – The Montgolfier brothers' hot air balloon made its first piloted test flight. It was tethered to an 80 feet tether and piloted by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier. It is believed that Étienne Montgolfier actually took the first ride in the brothers' back yard, but the official honors go to Rozier.
1928 – The Graf Zeppelin made its first trans-Atlantic flight. It became the first commercial transatlantic passenger aircraft line in the world.
1951 – Mexican chemist Luis E. Miramontes conducted the very last step of the first synthesis of norethisterone, the progestin that would later be used in one of the first three oral contraceptives. Now we know why the forced birther dipshit in chief wants to wall Mexico off.
1956 – Fortran was released into the wild, being shared with the coders for the first time.
1965 – The first bust for burning one's draft card took place at an anti-war ralley in Manhattan, relying upon a new amendment to the SS act making it illegal.
1966 – Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. All hell broke lose. To quote da wiki:
At its inception on October 15, 1966,[5] the Black Panther Party's core practice was its armed citizens' patrols to monitor the behavior of officers of the Oakland Police Department and challenge police brutality in Oakland, California. In 1969, community social programs became a core activity of party members.[6] The Black Panther Party instituted a variety of community social programs, most extensively the Free Breakfast for Children Programs, and community health clinics to address issues like food injustice. The party enrolled the largest number of members and made the greatest impact in the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Philadelphia.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover called the party "the greatest threat to the internal security of the country", and he supervised an extensive counterintelligence program (COINTELPRO) of surveillance, infiltration, perjury, police harassment, and many other tactics designed to undermine Panther leadership, incriminate party members, discredit and criminalize the Party, and drain the organization of resources and manpower. The program was also accused of assassinating Black Panther members.
Lessee now, was murdering Fred Hampton while he slept in his own bed an assassination or not? You be the judge.
1969 – Over 2 million people participated in the Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam, a combinatin teach-in and demonstration at numerous sites across the US. Naturally the war continued unabated, because wars are good business, no matter how many die.
1990 – Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to lessen Cold War tensions and open up the USSR. This soon resulted in a situation where the US could claim no exitential threat to justify its obscene war machine and warfare budget. After a period of trying to find a replacement it decided to just rekindle the cold war with the possible added side benefit of re-establishing gangster capitalism with more US oligarchs in the mix.
1991 – The "Oh-My-God particle" was spotted. This was a cosmic ray of extraordinarily high energy particle vastly in excess of anything our accelerators could generate.
2011 – The October 15, 2011 Global Protests "United for #GlobalChange" took place in more than 950 cities and 82 countries. Serious change was, oddly enough, not forthcoming.
Born this day in:
1608 – Evangelista Torricelli, physicist and mathematician

1905 – C. P. Snow, a very divisive author
1906 – Victoria Spivey, singer, songwriter, and pianist
1912 – Nellie Lutcher, singer and pianist
1916 – Al Killian, trumpet player and bandleader
1917 – Paul Tanner, trombonist
1920 – Mario Puzo, writer of business management texts and manuals

Where does one spot....
an "Oh My God Particle"? I may have seen one. Knocked me over.
Guess I'll wash my hands of it.
Thanks for the OT and music. Have a good one everybody.

since you are engaged in ablutions. Don't get too carried away, or folks may begin to suspect you of things, like Lady Macbeth.

Good morning, peeps
Yesterday I watched an interview with an historian named Morris Berman. I had never heard of him. His big thing seems to be that the grand historical project of the 21st century is the end of capitalism, and that the US is headed for good old collapse for end of empire/disruption to the social order type reasons.
He is a subscriber to the idea (I'm sure there's a name for this) that history doesn't pivot on individuals, but rather that individuals rise to power because they fit the needs of the time. If it wasn't that individual it would be someone similar to fill the same role.
And he says that Trump is the man of the hour. His historical role is to destroy America. To accelerate our collapse by wrecking our standing in the world, our economy, our justice system, our election system, the Supreme Court. If Clinton had been elected she would have kicked the can down the road a couple more years, but with El Trumpo it's pedal to the metal, full steam ahead to collapse.

I suspect HRC would've done much the same amount of
damage as Herr Drumpf, but in different ways and with a different emphasis here and there.

Afternoon, Jobu. Ubermenschen eat frittata, preferably those
with a polenta+bacon crust and a leek filling.
The god particle never really was, it was a simple misreading of the nature and energy of the Pere Ubu particle.
Thanks for the tune and thanks for reading.
Have a great day.

Good day, el,
Your clever OT brought to mind many decades ago an old actress i worked with, a good friend, who did her best to educate me in reading tarot cards and number 15, the Devil Rider, came to mind. "The shadow when reversed releases the bindings."
An apropos metaphor?
Anyways, morning conversations with neighbors talked of our strange weather, it's the middle of Oct. and the leaves haven't changed, and it's muggy, very strange to me and the old-timers living here; impacts of the two hurricanes changing the Gulf Stream or something; doesn't feel natural; trying to explain this eludes me, but i feel it in the bones.
Otherwise, busy catching up here with being away from home for weeks; lots of chores.
Thanks for the fun OT and comments.
Good aftenoon, Smiley7. That portrayal of ol' numba 15
looks highly reminiscent of Baphomet. For me, releasing the bindings is of no import, for I do not ski. Your mileage may differ. The Tarot, naturally, sends me off to check the I Ching:

Below Ken Keeping Still, Mountain

Good luck with your chores and have a great day.

Putin isn’t going to make you homeless or kill you or deny you health care.
Your government will allow it to happen though.
Hey eh! Thanks for the OT. Big news on October 15?
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
Like lots of other folks, they are telling us that they have
evidence, but showing us zip shit. I'm tired of it. As far as I'm concerned these mouthpieces don't exist and said nothing, from clapper to comey, to London (skripal) to Turkey.

“Left” media have Atlanticist think-tank guy on Middle East beat
I was trying to find information about the author Jakob Farah, who as a Middle East correspondent reports from what appears to be an anti-Assad perspective for the German Taz.de and the French Le monde diplomatique.

Oh.
Afternoon, LOL. That seems to be the norm these days.
There aren't many actual "reporters" without an agenda and a script left.
Edit: changed "morning" to "afternoon"

New motto
I propose that we replace the phrase "In God we trust" on US currency with the far more fitting: "It's not personal, it's strictly business."
(Updated) I agree, EL--just as they said "where's the beef?"
I'm wondering "where the proof?" IOW, why the incessant articles about Turkish "leaks," if someone has videos/tapes/audio.
[Sorry, got my days mixed up--thought this was today's OT!]
If any of the Turks have the hard evidence--and, I'm not saying that I don't believe he was tortured/murdered, and that the Turks are lying--why the heck aren't they turning the evidence over to the US government? Or, to another country, if they don't trust DT's Administration.
Particularly, if as BAR reports, he was a CIA asset. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, that we're soon into week 3, and we still only have reporters claiming 'Turkish officials' have the evidence, Enough, already. Produce the evidence!
BTW, tried to get some info I had posted at Corrente, a couple years ago, and got this message,
Wondering if anyone else is being denied access?
Thanks for today's OT. Everyone have a nice evening!
