7% down until closed early

China’s CSI 300 Index had just tumbled 5 percent, triggering a 15-minute trading halt, and stock investors were scrambling to exit before getting locked in by a full-day suspension set to take effect at 7 percent. When the first halt was lifted, the market reaction was swift: it took just seven minutes for losses to reach the limit as volumes surged to their highs of the day.

“Investors rushed to the door during the level-one stage of the circuit breaker as they fretted the market would go down further,” said William Wong, the head of sales trading at Shenwan Hongyuan in Hong Kong.

Spiraling declines on the first day of China’s circuit breakers show how measures meant to help restore calm to one of the world’s most volatile equity markets risk doing just the opposite.

A certain person that I flagged on another diary this weekend jumped right in to proclaim that you are the purveyor of doom and gloom. I cannot remember him ever posting an economic diary in the past. What is with these crazy people?

Seriously, how is the economy going to get any better when people world wide are being systematically stripped of their incomes?

Back to back hecklers, first Sanders, then Clinton. Both situations make national news.
Hecklers have been used by politicians since the time Grog ran for Cave President as a way of pumping up their base against the opposition.
So, what are the odds of this happening organically?
Or were these purposeful plants?
Over at Daily Kos I'd be tarred and feathered with conspiracy theory tin foil and truther tar and feathers just for asking.

The face of ISIS

The family of New Year’s plotter Emanuel Lutchman, arrested by the FBI as a “pro-ISIS” extremist who planned to attack a Rochester bar, say he was mentally ill and easily manipulated, and posed no risk to carry out an attack on his own.
...
His father, Omar Lutchman, said his son was impressionable and “easily manipulated,” and that “first he was a Blood, then he was a Crip, then he became a Muslim.” He had apparently been kicked out of the sports bar that was to be the target for panhandling.

The complaint against Lutchman for the “plot” also suggests that he was unlikely to pull off any attacks on his own, noting that he told the FBI informant he didn’t have the money to buy a knife, and managed to convince him to take him shopping at Walmart to get some.

Pathetic.

I suppose the good news is I've seen a lot of people commenting on that who understand what the FBI is doing. There's a book written a couple years back called "The Terror Factory" about how the FBI manufactures these "terrorist" incidents using dupes like this.
Another thing that's old as the hills but keeps working. Unfortunately all they have to do is put out the headline and move on and the damage is done.
Then you get democrats (and republicans) drooling while calling each other terrorists. "Those terrorists in E. Oregon". Pretty soon everyone is a terrorist and the ruling class has us right where they want us.

Here's a fun little read I came across this morning...
The cognitive dissonance of conservative NSA hawks, in 1 telling episode

Lindsey Graham is confident that government surveillance only applies to terrorists.

"I don't think you're talking to the terrorists," the South Carolina senator and erstwhile presidential candidate told a television interviewer. "I know you're not. I know I'm not. So we don't have anything to worry about."

Graham has also called the nuclear deal with Iran a "death sentence for Israel" and blamed it for many of the problems in the world.

But one wonders if Graham, for all his bravado and certitude, didn't experience at least a little bit of cognitive dissonance when he read reports that conversations about the Iran deal between members of Congress and American Jewish groups were recorded in U.S. surveillance of the Israeli government.

"That raised fears — an 'Oh-s — moment,' one senior U.S. official said — that the executive branch would be accused of spying on Congress," according to The Wall Street Journal.

You don't say?

was listening the Thom Hartmann show for a few minutes today and he talked about economic policies since Reagan but somehow neglected to mention Clinton and Obama. Right now there's a crazy fog over the Obama administration. It's like every partisan Democrat is unaware of what's going on (deportations, endless war etc.) and can only think of Hillary vs Bernie and occasionally Trump.

reporter just said that they (FSC/WJC) are avoiding taking questions that touch on WJC's 'past.' He said it will be interesting to see how they handle this problem if WJC stays on the campaign trail. (I guess FSC quit her confrontational replies to DT, after her Iowa interview in which she called him 'sexist.') Now, she has her brigade of surrogates/apologists--Lanny Davis, etc.--defending her. I think that FSC made the remark during a Des Moines Register Editorial Board interview, if I've understood it correctly. No wonder they keep her off teevee. The idea that anyone married to WJC would open that door, is flat-out amazing, IMO.

Bottom line, this dude, reporter James (Pindell/Pinelli--I've heard it both ways) says there is a very great deficit of 'enthusiasm' for FSC, compared to for Bernie (in New Hampshire), aside from the fact that Bernie has a healthy lead in the polls, there. That's 'why' they've got ole Bill on the campaign trail, to prop up that gap. He's really looking forward to covering this race.

My question is: Will any of the other candidates bring up his toxic neoliberal economic policies?

2015 Ends With 344 Homicides in Baltimore City, Second Highest In History

I always never drove to Baltimore other than to the Inner Harbor and that was mostly years ago. But Navy Vet Terp invited me once, so I remember well driving through neighborhoods, including his, very well. The diary is spot on and I think the comments are too.

Just saying. I wished I could rec him or send him a message. But I "left the gos neighborhood" because too much shooting going on there, if you know what I mean. I think he has gained an amazing experience in his lifetime. A very good man to get to know.

GOS thinks they are all nuts, but the facts are more complicated.

In 2001, the Hammonds started a controlled burn on their own land to eliminate invasive junipers from ruining grazing for cattle: the fire spread to neighboring federal lands. As the Tri-State Livestock News reports:

“The first fire, in 2001, was a planned burn on Hammonds’ own property to reduce juniper trees that have become invasive in that part of the country. That fire burned outside the Hammonds’ private property line and took in 138 acres of unfenced BLM land before the Hammonds got it put out. No BLM firefighters were needed to help extinguish the fire and no fences were damaged.

“’They called and got permission to light the fire,’ Dwight’s wife, Susan, said, adding that was customary for ranchers conducting range management burns – a common practice in the area.

“’We usually called the interagency fire outfit – a main dispatch – to be sure someone wasn’t in the way or that weather wouldn’t be a problem.’ Susan said her son Steven was told that the BLM was conducting a burn of their own somewhere in the region the same day, and that they believed there would be no problem with the Hammonds going ahead with their planned fire. The court transcript includes a recording from that phone conversation.”

There was a second fire in 2006, started by Steven Hammond to counteract the lightning fires that threatened to envelope their land and their home. The Bureau of Land Management says that a single acre of federal land was affected by the fire – and they pressed charges, even though lightning fires were raging all over the area and there was no way to determine which fires were burning what land.

The Hammonds were originally charged under the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 with nine counts – including starting several other fires — but the jury saw otherwise and acquitted them of all but two counts: starting the fires they admitted to in the first place. The judge sentenced them to less than the federal mandatory, stating that what the government was asking – five years – was “disproportionate” and if imposed would’ve “shocked my conscience.”

The government wasn’t satisfied with that, and they appealed the decision. Judge Ann Aiken – the same judge who ruled that the prison system has a right to keep its safety standards confidential, even though a prisoner had died under dicey circumstances – agreed with the Justice Department, and the Hammonds must now serve full five-year sentences, minus time already served. They have agreed to turn themselves in, in spite of the protests on their behalf.

What is clear is that the government is out to make an example of the Hammonds.

hecate's picture

certainly are different, those facts:

Witnesses at trial, including a relative of the Hammonds, testified the arson occurred shortly after Steven Hammond and his hunting party illegally slaughtered several deer on BLM property. Jurors were told that Steven Hammond handed out ‘Strike Anywhere’ matches with instructions that they be lit and dropped on the ground because they were going to ‘light up the whole country on fire.’ One witness testified that he barely escaped the eight to ten foot high flames caused by the arson. The fire consumed 139 acres of public land and destroyed all evidence of the game violations. After committing the arson, Steven Hammond called the BLM office in Burns, Oregon and claimed the fire was started on Hammond property to burn off invasive species and had inadvertently burned onto public lands. Dwight and Steven Hammond told one of their relatives to keep his mouth shut and that nobody needed to know about the fire.

An August lightning storm started numerous fires and a burn ban was in effect while BLM firefighters fought those fires. Despite the ban, without permission or notification to BLM, Steven Hammond started several ‘back fires’ in an attempt save the ranch’s winter feed. The fires burned onto public land and were seen by BLM firefighters camped nearby. The firefighters took steps to ensure their safety and reported the arsons.

In any event, the Hammonds—whose prison sentence is bullshit—are not involved in the cornholing at the birdhouse. That yeehawing is the work of the Bundy slavers, who thunder that "this refuge from its very inception has been a tool of tyranny," and "intend to return the land to 'ranching, trucks and recreational vehicles like it used to be.'" Right. We can ask the Paiute about that.

The Bundy slavers, who hew to a froot-loop Reality of how the US government works, have amusingly violated their own precepts by going into some other sovereign state and county, there to, without local support, raise sand.

“The battle was brought to us,” said Dan Nichols, a county commissioner who is a neighbor of the Hammond family. “This county isn’t supportive of what’s being done here at all. Once again, it’s a bunch of those who live without the county telling us what we need to do, how we need to be doing it and the repercussions if we don’t.”

why the Bundy slavers only talk about "free men," rather than "free men and women." And that is because, in the Magic Underpants religion, to which the Bundy-slavers belong, women do not possesss even souls, unless some stray soul is spurted into them by a Mormon man's "endowed penis."
