Good Monday to all. This is weird and beautiful: Northern California beaches dusted with snow in latest storm

The last time Humboldt County beaches saw snow was during the winter of 2002-03, said Brad Charboneau, a meteorologist with the weather service.

There is a photo of Squaw Valley over there too, reminds me of when we got snowed in by a powder storm it was a blast. Crazy drunk teenagers were jumping off the second floor balcony in to eight foot snow drifts. That was the time the car broke down and we had to beg parents to wire us money for bus tickets. Frozen engine block, and then it cracked and overheated and blam it was dead. Dead in traffic... boy was that fun! lol I love Tahoe, my parents are in the lake.

It is freezing and so the basil plant I put in the ground too early is dead. The sowed bee seeds are frozen too. I always fall for the warm spell mid-winter, start scratching and planting before the ground warms up. Maybe next year will be different. heh There is plenty more basil propagating inside, and a leek butt too.

When I moved the two wire cylinders full of leaf compost out front, there were big fat earthworms already making dirt for me down there. One was almost six inches long, that made me happy.

right on making dirt for earthworms

worms. I need some native clover of some sort for a cover crop/living mulch, thanks for reminding me. Probably not a good time to plant though.

I have one poor battered and bedraggled leek butt replant in a hanging basket that is doomed to never get bigger than it is, so I'm thinking of throwing it in something and trying a fresh re-start with it. I also have about 5 green onion butts pretty much ready to go into the "ground" - another hanging planter.

@enhydra lutris I don't know what this stuff is, think it must be invasive not native. It is blooming all over around here right now. Pretty yellow flowers. Here's a couple of old shots where I was admiring the rhus diversaloba. I don't just like poison oak, I am drawn to it like it is a part of me. I used to meditate and chant the name every morning before brush clearing out in it all day. friendly

That clover even grows on a stone wall, like the Buckeyes can. They are starting to bloom now too. cheers

P.S. Vitamin E is good for healing scars, topical. Thanks Heloise. lol I used it on my own 3 inch appendectomy scar. Helps if the surgeon's aide is a careful sewer too. smooth

(Trifolium aureum, trifolium campestre). It's been here since 1800 (little-known fact, ALL clovers are naturalized, NONE are native to North America).

There's also a lookalike called black medic (Medicago lupulina), which is actually a woodsorrel.

All clovers are edible, and all are excellent nitrogen fixers. (They're also all hated by people who want to maintain monoculture lawns - they spoil the "look".)

as it so often does, starts with or is exacerbated by giving targeted tax breaks of some sort. It creates a structural imbalance. It also belies the myth of "capitalism" and "market economics" we have never had either. Markets are used as tools and weapons to exploit the exploitable and re bypassed to aid and abet the oligarchs. That's facilitated by the fact that rentiers and rentier economies invariably concentrate wealth and power.

Socked in fog this AM. Great day to make a monster movie here.

We had a fun music session Sat. I love cello. During the gathering the fiddler told a story about his s-i-l playing fiddle on a PBS documentary in black face....wondering if it could ruin his career. All my years in AL I've never personally seen anyone in black face.

As to science for girls and women, Raytheon is right there doing their part....

RAYTHEON COMMERCIAL: What does it mean to be a Girl Scout?

It’s like a journey getting me ready for my career.

Think like a programmer.

I can do anything.

Maybe I’ll be a robotics engineer.

Cyber security.

Rocket scientist.

Being a Girl Scout makes me believe in me. And I’m going to change the world.

Awesome.

Raytheon’s vision about making the world a safer place and the Girl Scouts’ vision of making the world a better place couldn’t be more well suited as partners.

BEN NORTON: Raytheon is boasting of driving diversity in STEM by targeting young girls in grades 6 to 12.

The military-industrial complex, the CEOs of four of the five biggest defense contractors, are, in fact, women. Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Boeing’s defense wing. There’s also America’s lead weapons negotiator, the undersecretary of state for arms control. And the undersecretary of state for energy, for nuclear security, also a woman. She runs the world’s largest nuclear stockpile

What an idea...directing women to become destructive war mongers.

and was, of course, disgusted. Making a few more women into oligarchs, warmongers, board members and ceos, etc. isn't diversity except in the most technical sense. It is simply a different form of exploitation. The Girl Scouts should not "partner" with firms like Raytheon, and should also publicly challenge those types of ads.

Roman à clef is a term I never heard before, despite being diagnosed with dysthimia since forever. Thanks. vive la france

French for novel with a key, is a novel about real life, overlaid with a façade of fiction. The fictitious names in the novel represent real people, and the "key" is the relationship between the nonfiction and the fiction. The "key" may be produced separately by the author or implied through the use of epigraphs or other literary techniques.

So I never had a surgery where the anesthesiologist didn't overdose me in to a heaving lump of vomit upon recovery. Every recovery a violent recovery so why not get shocked in to having a brain seizure the next time out. To fix clinical depression. Yeah, I don't know. bad epigraph

As the epigraph to The Sum of All Fears, Tom Clancy quotes Winston Churchill in the context of thermonuclear war:

Why, you may take the most gallant sailor, the most intrepid airman or the most audacious soldier, put them at a table together – what do you get? The sum of their fears.

36 degrees and rain coming in. Another day inside. I do believe that it is time to make pizza. I've been experimenting with a new flatbread-ish crust making mini-pizzas for lunch and I do believe that it's ready for the bid time. Nothing like a cold day to bring that to fruition.

"We're amerika's coming attraction"
Deputy city attorney says she contracted typhus at City Hall

Greenwood, who works in a unit that defends the LAPD in lawsuits brought against the department, is the only City Hall employee who has said publicly that she contracted typhus.

The disease, which has been around since medieval times, is carried by rats. Fleas become infected when they bite rats and then spread it to humans either through bites or when the insects’ feces are rubbed into a cut or scrape in a person’s skin.

Typhus has been a growing problem in L.A. The disease is associated with overcrowding and unsanitary conditions, and last year, after a half dozen homeless people came down with typhus, county officials declared an outbreak in downtown L.A. At the time, they urged residents to steer clear of rats and other wild animals.

variants of white pizza, but never found one I really liked. I learned about them by accident, having been served a slice gratis by the bartender in a small cafe in Rome. That one was veggie as I recall, and that may be the trick, queso + veggies.

Tonight's will be ground beef, sausage, shrooms, maybe olives, and kale or chard with a standard red sauce based on one by Lydia Bastianich and mozarella.

pizzas. My lunchtime pizzas are sometimes white pizza, and sometimes Yellow (cheddar based margherita), green (pesto or persillade) and even brown (refrieds). The recipe is to make up a small crust and see what is floating around the refrigerator than looks like it would go good on a pie, and since I'm certifiable, that has even included stuff like bean sprouts and cilantro.

women in science. I love 'em. (but not to work for the war machine!) starting girls at age 6-7 makes sense for grabbing important math skills. seems like there should be something about women in science but first more about black artists.

Ruth Waddy was another early initiator of black art here in the us along with elizabeth catlett, samella sanders lewis and ej montgomery, all known as the mothers of the black art movement.

Ruth Waddy graduating from kintergarten_0.jpg

After trying to make a living in Chicago, where she was denied a job as a solderer during World War II because of her race, Waddy, then a young mother, left the Midwest for Los Angeles. In California she worked as a riveter for Douglas Aircraft Corporation and held other odd jobs (including as an intake clerk at Los Angeles County Hospital, where she worked with Noah Purifoy) before taking a ceramics class that sparked her interest in art. Waddy went on to study art through the Famous Artists Home Study Course and at Los Angeles City College and Otis Art Institute, quickly becoming an adept printmaker whose favored medium was linocut. She exhibited her prints widely in the United States and traveled to the Soviet Union in 1966 as part of a delegation of eight American artists. Traveling on the recommendation of Charles White, who had made the same trip several years earlier, Waddy carried her own work abroad as well as twenty prints created by other black California artists.

Before her trip to the U.S.S.R., Waddy had journeyed cross-country via Greyhound bus to collect prints by black artists for the 1965 volume Prints by American Negro Artists, edited by Theodore V. Roelof-Lanner and published by the Cultural Exchange Center in Los Angeles. In 1969 Waddy also contributed her extensive knowledge of contemporary African American artists to the influential two-volume series Black Artists on Art, coedited with artist, teacher, and gallerist Samella S. Lewis. In her introduction, Waddy clearly outlines her view of art making: "Art is not an intellectual exercise, approached through structured learning, emotions, styles, and practised [sic] in museums, galleries, and private 'collections.' Art is spiritual, the primary function of which is for the benefit, growth and improvement of the human animal." She adds, "From whatever point of view, aesthetic or social, [the black artist] has always had to tell it 'like it is.'"

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12Vw2PfH99A]

Waddy, together with fellow artists Samella S. Lewis and Evangeline J. (E.J.) Montgomery, were the founding mothers of the Black Arts Movement in California. They created and collected works that infused African and African American motifs and traditions with the energy and philosophy of the Black Power movement. In 1962, she founded California’s seminal black arts organization ArtWest Associates that connected African American artists with each other, provided a forum to discuss artistic and racial issues, and sought out exhibition venues since the major museums and galleries did not exhibit art by blacks at that time. In 1965, she published Prints by American Negro Artists, and in 1969 the groundbreaking Black Artists on Art with Lewis.
