Juan Guaido's Bogus Adventure

Sometimes the headline tells you more than the article.

A real man of the people, that Guaido.

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido left the country to start an international tour that includes meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, according to people familiar with his plans.

Guaido is already in Colombia and will meet with President Ivan Duque Sunday afternoon, Duque said on Twitter. He plans to attend an international conference against terrorism on Monday in Colombia at which Pompeo is due to speak.

Let's just ignore Guaido's problem with corruption for now.
Before rubbing shoulders with billionaires in a mountain chalet, Guaido will meet with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Which brings us to headline #2.

During a joint press conference with Duque, Pompeo said “we applaud the way Colombia responded to the demonstrations, with professionalism, respect for human dignity and calling for national dialogue.”

Our commitment is to respect human rights and the rule of law. We applaud the way Colombia responded to the demonstrations, with professionalism, respect for human dignity, calling for national dialogue.

Authorities’ attempts to violently suppress the largely peaceful protests killed at least three people and injured hundreds.

According to the Committee for Political Prisoners, more than 1,000 peaceful protesters were unlawfully arrested.

to be more democratic than this country.
How else can you explain why Guaido is still alive and walking free?

He's committing treason and is attempting a coup to overthrow the government of Venezuela. Yet he's still prancing around and appearing as a hero on American TV.

But Julian Assange, who overthrew no governments, has essentially been imprisoned for the better part of a decade and is awaiting extradition to the US to be awarded more prison time.

Oh, wait, I hope that's not the example we're going to hold up for Iraq and Iran.

The dramatic events marked a sharp escalation in Maduro’s gambit to end Guaidó’s quest to unseat him and sparked immediate condemnation by Washington, which has strongly backed the 36-year-old opposition leader. Opposition officials declared the move an effective “parliamentary coup” meant to consolidate Maduro’s near-dictatorial powers.

“Today, they dismantled the rule of law, assassinating the republic, with the complicity of a group of traitor lawmakers,” Guaidó told reporters outside the parliamentary building.

Later Sunday, Guaidó sought to counter the move by gathering opposition lawmakers at the headquarters of El Nacional, a local newspaper, to cast an official vote. In a 100-to-0 tally — enough to put him over the top in a full session of the 167-seat chamber — those present reelected Guaidó as head of the legislature. Twenty-eight of the 100 were votes from stand-ins of exiled lawmakers.
