Friday Photography - Non-Native Flowers, a Native Insect and an Endemic Bird

Evening all,

Kereru (Wood Pigeon) bowing in the Puriri tree ...

This is not your ordinary pigeon at 20” in length and 1 1/2 pounds. “In spite of their size they are skilled fliers, especially in Spring when aerobatic displays of steep curving dives and spectacular loop-the-loops make up part of their mating rituals.”
https://www.visitzealandia.com/About/Birds/Kereru

I'll be in and out of the thread for awhile. Be well everyone, and enjoy all that you have.

The others are Canna Lilies that do very much look like Gladiolas. They must be related. Hadn't looked at it that way before. No ferns in your deserty area ; (. Sage is also nice!

Thanks for Friday photos tonight, Janis. I like the contrast of colors in that first shot.

Last Saturday I went to check out Three Sisters waterfall. Unfortunately there was no water flowing at the falls. The nice scenery along the way more than made up for the lack of water.

I woke up this morning determined to drink less, eat right, and exercise.
But that was four hours ago when I was younger and full of hope.

@Socialprogressive

I'm glad you found beauty along the way and weren't disappointed by lack of waterfalls. So happy that there is still so much to appreciate, and also hope for more water where it should be. I especially like the breezy clouds. Thank you.

More water here in San Diego would be nice. Rainfall the last few years has been down. We did get some much needed rain on Christmas day which was good.

I went to Three Sisters waterfall. It's located in San Diego east county about 13 miles north west of the town of Descanso. It's a 2 mile hike from the trailhead to the falls. The oak tree was on a little rise right at the beginning of the trail.

What a pretty pigeon, I had no idea they got that big! I love the mantis too. There are some crazy-looking mantid species out there; they are so cool.

Here are some miscellaneous photos:

I have a pair of downy woodpeckers in my yard. One day a second female visited my feeders; I watched them chase her around the yard for a while. Here she is keeping an eye out for them.

Your bird feeder set up looks like a work of art, and your barn and property covered in hoarfrost is magical.

The Wood Pigeon is our only bird big enough to eat and disperse the larger seed of a half dozen of our native trees. Without them we'd be fucked.

to our C99 photography community! Drinks And, thank you for hosting this evening's thread, Janis. Hope you and yours had a very lovely Christmas. Smile

After I catch up with Joe, EBers, etc., will be back to post a photo, which--for once--will not be a stock photo.

Seriously, Mr M does not want me to post the Christmas photo I have in mind (for personal and sentimental reasons), but, maybe I can strike a deal with him. If not, I'll post a small photo of our soon-to-be new addition. Unfortunately, it doesn't do her justice (because of the angle, and the fact that the photo is quite blurry), but, I suppose the general idea of what she looks like, will come across. We switched course, and didn't opt for a smaller model. IOW, she's gonna be a 'big girl.'

Thanks, in advance, for posting all the interesting and beautiful photos, Everyone. If I can learn to take decent photos of the pup, I hope to some day branch out, and take pics of scenery, etc., like the rest of you Guys.

Later.

Also looking forward to seeing the big girl when she arrives. What a lucky threesome you'll be. For me the photos will be an additional pleasure to the baby boy and baby Lab dog ones my family has been sending ; ). There's hardly anything that generates more smiles and warmth. Cheers Mollie!

Pup may not be quite this large--this is the Mom of Pup's sire, and he is on high end of the Golden male size chart--but, "what the heck!" If we had wanted a small dog, should've considered a Chihuahua, or something, right? Wink On top of it, the so-called English Cremes are a bit stockier and larger-boned, than the typical (yellow) American Golden strain.

Still working on Mr M about the other photo--maybe next week.

Hey, we're gonna load up on black-eyed peas this Tuesday, 'cause we gotta hope that next year will be better than 2018.

Biggrin

Have a nice weekend, and A Wonderful New Year!

Hey, thanks for posting the beautiful beach photos. Also, I appreciate your excellent work on Hot Air OT. In all honesty, of everyone at C99, I'm probably the most ignorant regarding the topic of climate change. It's another topic that's 'beyond my pay grade.' Anyhoo, I'm very grateful to folks like you who follow the issue, and keep the rest of us well-informed.

Have a wonderful and prosperous New Year!

The link brought me to your beautiful photo of Bryce Canyon. I’d love for you to post more photos from your travels. We’d all enjoy it. I wish I could help you technically, but I’m basically illiterate. Shh … I still do it as I always have. I upload the photo to my ‘image library’ at DKos and copy the ‘image address’ from there to post here. It’s very simple and the quality is good.

Love the colors in it. Big pigeon ...

I wish we'd get more froggy days here. We used to get it when I was little, but have only had one this year. This is from my CA days where every winter we would get very dense tule fog. Many times when driving I couldn't see the taillights of the car in front of mine. I called it driving by Braille because the roads had round markers on them in case you drifted too far to the right.

The first time I saw it I was surprised by how much it moved. There was a park close to my house that had a winding path through it with old fashioned lights that I wanted to photograph, but it was too isolated to go to at night. Plus it was the park where Lacy Peterson was supposed to have disappeared from. Remember that case? There were search parties searching the area where I took these photos. Ugh ... horrible memories.

Great pix Janis, love your Wood Pigeon, it is a beautiful beast of a Pigeon, those Crowned Pigeon are even bigger! Daenerys beautiful birds and place. Soc.Prog. great scenics, and love a good cloud shot... QMS - great call on the mares tails... some folks here say 3 days to rain, when you see them... BR, that first pic I am certain is the very rare Soft-spined Urchin? Wink

The burning question...
Why do they always make cartoon, (or toy, or ornament), Alice in Wonderland, etc., mushrooms red with white spots so as to strongly resemble the deadly lethal Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) or Death Cap shroom!?!?!?! Never would you see something actually resembling Psilo.cubens...

Here's a couple...

for your wonderful photos of the ‘hidden’ life of nature. I must have seen a Dayflower before, but not sure. It’s amazing that such a delicate flower, which lives for only a day, serves to draw toxic metals out of the earth. Now I’m wondering whether the toxins they absorb are neutralised through the process.
