Friday Photography - Mitimiti

I returned this week from a visit with a friend in the Hokianga. These photos are from a day trip to Mitimiti, a remote and old settlement on the west coast, where there are few fences and animals are mostly free or wild. For some residents the only access to civilisation is at low tide, when they can drive their vehicles for half a mile or more along the sand to meet the road.

In order of appearance ...

Free roaming pigs and piglets

School bus (van) stop

Crab

Tide pool

Wild horses and foals

Have a wonderful weekend all.

Thanks to whomever introduced me to this guy’s photography. He had a video yesterday of an osprey carrying 3 fish and then it dropped one for later. I’ll try to find it.

@snoopydawg

Thanks for the photo. I love this dragonfly story ...

The Dragonfly

Once, in a little pond, in the muddy water under the lily pads,
there lived a little water beetle in a community of water
beetles. They lived a simple and comfortable life in the pond
with few disturbances and interruptions.

Once in a while, sadness would come to the community when one of
their fellow beetles would climb the stem of a lily pad and
would never be seen again. They knew when this happened; their
friend was dead, gone forever.

Then, one day, one little water beetle felt an irresistible urge
to climb up that stem. However, he was determined that he would
not leave forever. He would come back and tell his friends what
he had found at the top.

When he reached the top and climbed out of the water onto the
surface of the lily pad, he was so tired, and the sun felt so
warm, that he decided he must take a nap. As he slept, his body
changed and when he woke up, he had turned into a beautiful
blue-tailed dragonfly with broad wings and a slender body
designed for flying.

So, fly he did! And, as he soared he saw the beauty of a whole
new world and a far superior way of life to what he had never
known existed.

Then he remembered his beetle friends and how they were thinking
by now he was dead. He wanted to go back to tell them, and
explain to them that he was now more alive than he had ever been
before. His life had been fulfilled rather than ended.

But, his new body would not go down into the water. He could
not get back to tell his friends the good news. Then he
understood that their time would come, when they, too, would
know what he now knew. So, he raised his wings and flew off
into his joyous new life!

To me the 'You' in worship (from 'as we worship you') is the spirit of nature that inspires faith. I believe that we still have so much left to value and thrive by, especially in nature and with family and friends. Home is wherever your heart sings.

I particularly like the tide pool. Such places of wonder when you're small.

Nothing coastal recently, so here's an oldie:

Oh, and that bus stop beats some of the ones around here, the frigid north.

Thank you for the photo tour of Mitimiti, Janis. I really love the shot of the bus stop.

These shots are from the Imacculata Parish on the University of San Diego Campus that I took last Saturday. Full disclosure, I added the clouds and balloon to the otherwise boring blue sky in the last photo.

(culture, no money) versus American Samoa (money, loss of culture), for Samoans.

I’ve been told most Samoans have family in both and end up ping-ponging back and forth, heading to the one when they need the money, and the other when they can’t stand it anymore and need cultural recharging.

The 100 year history of Samoan and NZ relations is significant and chequered. Today Samoans make up 4% of the population in NZ. Interestingly enough, viruses have played and continue to play a large part in its communal history. Normal travel between the two is stationary now because of Covid.

https://nzhistory.govt.nz/politics/samoa

This is from Wikipedia -

After the second world war, the newly created United Nations led efforts in New Zealand to grant Samoa independence as part of the decolonization process. On 1 January 1962, Samoa obtained its independence from New Zealand, the first Pacific island country to achieve independence.[7]The Samoan independence celebration was attended by New Zealand Prime Minister Keith Holyoake.[1]

Post Independencery[edit]
Treaty of Friendship[edit]
In August 1962, a Treaty of Friendship was signed between both nations. The treaty contains seven articles which are as follows:.[8]

Article I: Relations between New Zealand and Western Samoa shall continue to be governed by a spirit of close friendship.

Article II: Where appropriate the two Governments shall consult each other on matters of mutual interest and concern.

Article III: Each Government shall ensure that citizens of the other living within its territory are, in accordance with the normal practice between friendly states, given equitable treatment and full legal protection and access to the Courts.

Article IV: The two Governments shall continue to work together to promote the welfare of the people of Western Samoa. In particular the Government of New Zealand will consider sympathetically requests from the Government of Western Samoa for technical, administrative and other assistance. In particular the Government of New Zealand will:

(a) When requested, act as the channel for communications between the Government of Western Samoa and other Governments and international organizations;
(b) When requested, and where permissible and appropriate, undertake the representation of the Government of Western Samoa at any international conference at which Western Samoa is entitled to be represented;
(c) When requested, supply Western Samoa with information concerning international affairs;
(d) Undertake the diplomatic protection of nationals of Western Samoa in other countries and perform consular functions on their behalf.
Article V: The Government of New Zealand shall, for as long as the Government of Western Samoa wishes, and in such manner as will in no way impair the right of the Government of Western Samoa to formulate its own foreign policies, afford assistance to the Government of Western Samoa in the conduct of its international relations.

Article VI: Either Government may at any time give to the other Government written notice of its desire to terminate the Agreement. In such case, the Agreement shall terminate upon the expiration of three months from the date on which the notice is received.

Article VII: The Agreement shall enter into force on the date of signature.

Bilateral relations[edit]
In 1982, the Privy Council granted citizenship to Western Samoan citizens born since 1924 when the nation was under New Zealand mandate. However, the New Zealand government did not accept the decision and instead granted New Zealand citizenship to Samoan citizens who were living in New Zealand on 14 September 1982. This occurred when a Samoan woman by the name of Falema‘i Lesa overstayed her visa in New Zealand and pressed her claim to be a New Zealand citizen. The Privy Council ruled that all Western Samoans born between 1924 and 1948 were British subjects and that in 1949 they and their descendants had become New Zealand citizens.[9]

There have been numerous official visits between leaders of both nations. In 2002, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark came to Samoa and officially apologized for New Zealand's treatment of Samoans during colonial times.[10] Samoa currently does not maintain its own military forces. New Zealand regularly patrols Samoan waters and airspace with the permission of the Samoan government.[7]

In 2015, New Zealand provided $27 million NZ dollars to Samoa.[11] Much of New Zealand's aid to Samoa is to assist the tourism, energy, education, law and justice, and health programs.[11] There are direct flights between both nations through the following airlines: Air New Zealand and Samoa Airways.

In March 2018 New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Foreign Minister Winston Peters led a Pacific Mission to Samoa. While in Samoa the Prime Minister met with the Samoan Prime Minister, other ministers and attended a number of climate change and disaster resilience related events. In May 2019, Samoan Deputy Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa visited New Zealand to attend and speak at the Just Transition Summit in New Plymouth and met with Prime Minister Ardern, Foreign Minister Peters, Minister Shaw, Minister Genter and members of the Pacific Caucus.[7]

A few years back I drove a production RV for a photographer from BMW and we drove over 1500 miles, and never left Texas. I can only dream about such places as Mitimiti. Those are great photos!

I have a few photos I took of some different kind of wild animals here in Texas...
