Friday Photography
Not many words this week. Last week's post was about photography and the law and is probably worth a read if you are planning to go to Philly next week and are planning on taking some pics. I did intend to go but the universe, unfortunately, had different plans. I am insanely jealous of those who are able to make the trip. I suspect that this will be the most important convention for 50 years or so.

This weeks assignment is Circles/Round
Wheels and balls are obvious subjects. Other possibilities include manhole covers (these can be really interesting)
Of course the assignments are a suggestion - post anything you like, images, words, combination of the two etc. I'll put up a thread tomorrow noonish as usual - or just use this one.

It's about 90 here but a breeze (new sign of CC) and relatively low (50%) humidity, it's okay.
More work on polarized sunglasses, I think my windows are a wash (and need one). I see there are put-on lenses for an iPhone, anyone tried them?
I have last year's squawroot feet from it's oak. About time for this year's crop but drought here. I was always attuned to nature and then discovered my deficits. With a doctorate, still willin'.

I've used macro add on lens for iPhone -works pretty well - haven't tried polarizer though (if anyone even makes one).
Dew point has been getting up around 75 here which is pretty unpleasant even for these parts. We had a storm yesterday afternoon that really took the edge off it though- managed to eat outside which was a bonus.
Talking of nature we seem to have an abundance of it this year (animal and plant) - especially for a fairly built up area

While my summer through the eyes of a puppy
is now rough. She is not fond of heat but will lie in the sun until she is baked. Or something. Still suet-feeding birds, but several squirrels have it all figured out. Going for capsaisin flavor next order. Birds don't taste hot (I still have to call Cornell LoO to confirm), but squirrels find it off-putting for several weeks.
Pup chases squirrels but has yet to learn the human word cue. Has not gotten any yet, knows they go UP, but her semi-contained visual sighting requires a bark-on-launch. Fail. I have yet to discover her smartness. But I love her.

We're under a 'heat advisory' for the first time this summer. And, as our luck would have it, we're having to travel to a couple of Gulf Coast states, into even more insufferable weather/heat conditions.

Bloody hot here. 97 F., and the humidity is criminal.
As for round/rounded things......... I've got an archway. Other than that, nothing. Did I say it was hot?!!

Trumpeter Swans have only been back in NY State since the mid-90s. They were reintroduced to the Provence of Ontario and spread into NY.

Resident Sandhill cranes in NY?
I have scoped my downhill wetland, it used to be wet. Beavers had dams in two spots on Cascadilla Creek. water level dropped, reeds (not phragmites) grew in. One late summer was a birders spot for common egrets.
I saw sandhills in flight in WI but before that they were wonderful to see at dawn in the cut fields there.
Goldfinches here. If it is nesting now that may explain sightings and more often calls.
I now have 4 spp of woodpeckers at my suet feeders, plus all the smalls. What happened to sapsuckers?

They were first documented nesting in 2003
On Howland's Island, part of the Northern Montezuma WMA. They had first been observed migrating in 1999. They have been breeding in the Federal refuge since 2011. In the Town of Savannah there is a part of the Federal refuge called the Sandhill Crane Unit. A few years ago I saw two adults and two colts there. But the large flock seems to hang around the Knox-Marsellus/Puddler Marsh unit.
The entire Montezuma wetlands complex and its surrounding areas are a national treasure, and I'm lucky to live within an hour drive of all of it...

yes, you are absolutely correct! it is the peacock mantis shrimp, peeking out from behind his rock.
i have some more photos of him, but i was unable to telepathically persuade him to come all the way out of his lair this time. i guess i'm just not attuned to the shrimp frequency.
i really want to get a couple of decent shots of him, but he's tough to shoot. the light is low, so a large depth of field is tough to pull off since when he does come out all the way, he moves pretty fast. i'm pretty resistant to the idea of using a flash, but i'm starting to consider an off-the camera flash held so that it doesn't flash at him directly.
A lot of discussion
about using flash with live subjects - consensus AFAIK is that it is all to fast to cause discomfort but I am no expert. Knucklehead is the aqua flash photography expert - suspect he could give loads of useful advice. Hasn't been around for a couple of weeks though, said he was heading into a busy spell IIRC

I was retinal photographer for 25 years.
Moon and the light from the Alcatraz lighthouse.
This was taken with my first digital camera that was a point and shoot but at the time digital SLRs were out of my price range.
I have a Canon 40D with a 28-300 lense and would love to go back to Sausalito where I took this photo and use it.
I have been a photographer for over 40 years and when digital cameras first came out I thought that there was no way that they would replace film cameras. Surprise.
When I was an ophthalmic photographer, I had to develop the film by hand and then print a contact sheet that had to be free of all dust because as you can see in the photo of the retina, there are a lot of white spots which are leaking blood vessels and if the film wasn't clean of dust, the doctor wouldn't have a clear image to work from when he used a laser to treat the damaged blood vessels.
Digital retinal cameras had just come on the market a year before I was injured at work and instead of spending hours waiting for the films to be developed, the doctor could watch the test in real time on a monitor and decide if the patient needed immediate treatment or could wait a few days for it.
Sigh, I'd give anything to get back in that field of work.

I recall retinal images from my dog who blew 2 eyes with glaucoma. My mother has AMD and is blind but doesn't know it. I got a letter from my optho that it's checkup time. Already 2 implant lenses, I worry about macular degeneration now. And hereditary deafness. Crap. Better treatments for age-related macular degeneration now than then.
First time I went on an extended tour of Great Britain, I had three lead packs for film in my luggage. Digital improved things. Still hard to get moonrise shots like yours!

it was originally the silicon chip technology that made both digital imaging plus the computing power needed for many medical applications possible. In the decade or so I've been alive we have gone from slide rules to access to just about all the number crunching power we need and some.
Digital photography is so mature now that it is hard to believe that it didn't really exist two decades ago.
