...homily late last night. I didn't get a paywall because it's a "catapult the narrative" effort, Max Boot's morale message to the blob faithful.

Yes, there's a cliff ahead, keep marching, 1-2-3-4!

A vice minister at the ROK Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to protest Russia's agreement with North Korea, today. Reportedly (MBC), it was a rather loud confrontation for a diplomatic meeting. Previously, the South Korean Foreign Affairs Minister, Cho Tae-yeol, threatened to send armaments to Ukraine in a public statement; he also said South Korea would in concert with other nations take actions against Russia for any violations of UN sanctions against DPRK. Putin had mentioned the South Korean threats while in Vietnam. Apparently they were mentioned again when the Russian ambassador was summoned in Seoul. Keep digging. One foreign policy academic advised in an MBC phone conversation it was preferable for leaders to keep a cool head. The Russian ambassador to Seoul reportedly said, when summoned that threats intended to intimidate Russia would not be accepted. Apparently, there was also a third incident along the DMZ where South Korean guards shot warning shots at North Korean troops.

This morning I was listening to an analysis of the golf club clique that includes Kim Gon-hee and the ROK Marine 1st Division commander who was named as a suspect in the original Corporal Choi drowning death investigation. Hearings today in the National Assembly on apparent Presidential office interference in the investigation resulted in various current and former administration officials using various legal tactics to avoid answering questions. Some refused to take an oath. Some took the oath and refused to answer particular possibly incriminating statements that would subject them to perjury charges.

President Yoon Seok-yeol was described as having an "anger control disorder." He actually has a control disorder period. He thinks all government affairs in South Korea are directly under his control, irrespective of branch, department, agency or law. When something doesn't go his way, he goes into a rage, issues commands that must be obeyed, without reflection, circumspection, or discussion. Not good in any government, but highly undesirable in national security matters. The entire Corporal Choi death investigation coverup, a Watergate like incident unravelling in the independent Korean news media, is often referred to as a Yoon rage 격노 incident. One can only imagine his disposition when Putin was being feted in Pyongyang.

Because the Yoon government is under siege in the National Assembly, in particular now before the the Judiciary committee, which the conservatives sought unsuccessfully to chair, along with the powerful legislative committee, this military tension with North Korea is just what the doctor ordered. I feared this would happen but I'm still surprised now that it is developing and there appears to be no limit to Yoon's undiplomatic unprofessional and incompetent leadership.

South Korea summons Russian ambassador as tensions rise with North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea summoned the Russian ambassador to protest the country’s new defense pact with North Korea on Friday, as border tensions continued to rise with vague threats and brief, seemingly accidental incursions by North Korean troops.

Earlier Friday, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a vague threat of retaliation after South Korean activists flew balloons carrying anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets across the border, and South Korea’s military said it had fired warning shots the previous day to repel North Korean soldiers who briefly crossed the rivals’ land border for the third time this month.

That came two days after Moscow and Pyongyang reached a pact vowing mutual defense assistance if either is attacked, and a day after Seoul responded by saying it would consider providing arms to Ukraine to fight Russia’s invasion.

South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun summoned Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev to protest the deal between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un and called for Moscow to immediately halt its alleged military cooperation with Pyongyang.

The Chris Hedge's column is spot on. Thanks for the news roundup and Luther JS!

heh, it looks like south korea has a bad case of, "hey now, your team can't do what our team does!"

i think i see the game that putin is playing and he's doing a good job of it, but i wonder if the dullards in the diplomatic community are bright enough to respond appropriately or would rather escalate.

Couldn't find an English language youtube on this. I put an excerpt from the google translate of video description below. It's only about 40 secs. They were running a live feed from the dock all day on SBS.

The Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group with two other US warships, USS Inouye and USS Halsey, entered Busan harbor, in South Korea today for an upcoming tri-lateral military exercise.

The Naval Operations Command announced today (22nd) that the US 9th aircraft carrier assault group, including the USS Roosevelt and Aegis destroyers Halsey and Daniel Inoue, entered the Busan operation base....

...The 'Freedom Edge' exercise between Korea, the US and Japan, in which the USS Roosevelt will participate, is attracting attention because it is being conducted while Russia and North Korea have established a 'comprehensive strategic partnership' at the level of a military alliance.

The Naval Operations Command explained that this aircraft carrier's visit to Korea was carried out in an effort to substantially implement the pledge of 'permanent and ironclad extended deterrence' promised by the United States at this month's ROK-US defense ministerial meeting and the 3rd meeting of the ROK-US Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG). .

At the same time, he said that our military will strongly punish any provocations from North Korea to the end, and that the ROK-US alliance will support peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region based on a close cooperation system.

I wonder if any strategic bombers will show up in the region. This contributes to stability in the region they say.

even though you were rung out. Good selection of articles and videos. I just hope we make it to the election, but there’s no guarantee that Trump would reverse what Biden’s doing. America’s foreign policy is run by people we never voted for. But I’d be glad to see the back of Biden, Blinken, Sullivan and Kirby.

There were problems with running a campaign of Joy while committing a genocide? Who could have guessed?

i guess if trump wins, we will see if he learned anything from his first term of office. my fear is that he will just surround himself with another pack of slightly differently oriented neocons than biden has.

Ain’t that the truth?

I read somewhere that Trump had to pick Bolton and others of the swamp ilk because his donors demanded it. Dunno if it’s true, but it makes sense. Maybe because he’d be a lame duck this time he would do it his way.

i suspect that all over the middle east, there are well-armed, well-trained fighters just itching to fight the bully israel. given the years of fighting that they've been engaged in thanks to the u.s. neocons i suspect that they are far more formidable than the israeli thug army that specializes in brutalizing unarmed civilians.

it was indeed a good gig. we sat up in the nosebleed balcony section of this beautiful old theatre which had excellent acoustics. i've seen this band a couple of times and they continue to tweak their sound system and onstage gear. this show was the best one in terms of being able to hear pretty much everything going on with nobody stepping too hard on anybody else.

all in for Israel.

A brief excerpt from the CNN article:

Top Israeli officials including Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi participated in a series of meetings with Biden administration officials like national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House Middle East affairs coordinator Brett McGurk in Washington this week. They discussed a wide range of topics including the situation on Israel’s northern border, Iran and the ceasefire and hostage negotiations, sources said.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines said Friday it has no plan to invoke its mutual defense treaty with the United States after the Chinese coast guard reportedly rammed, boarded and used machetes and axes to damage two Philippine navy boats in a chaotic faceoff that injured Filipino navy personnel at a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s key advisers made the remarks in a televised news conference, squelching speculation that Manila might consider invoking the 1951 treaty to secure U.S. military help after Monday’s confrontation at Second Thomas Shoal, where the Chinese coast guard also seized Philippine navy rifles. The Philippine military chief condemned the incident, likening it to an act of piracy, and demanded that China return the rifles and pay for the damage.

The territorial disputes, which involve China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan, have long been seen as an Asian flashpoint that could pit the U.S. against China if the high seas confrontations escalate into an armed conflict. Washington has repeatedly warned that it’s obligated to help defend the Philippines, its oldest treaty ally in Asia, if Filipino forces, ships and aircraft come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

Arnaud had a great extended twitter post on this subject from US documents=

...from Taiwan, and began building it up, runway, clinic, school etc. Vietnam seized islands in the early seventies as well during a period of Chinese weakness. The Taiwan administered island, Taiping is larger than Thitu, also has a community, and was ruled not an "island" by UNCLOS definition and criteria in 2016, thereby ostensibly giving no rise to any EEZ claim. Under UNCLOS reefs, shoals, low water elevations and the like are not "territory" but go with the maritime EEZ that pertains to an inhabitable and self sustainable community on land features.

If Taiwan's Taiping is not an "island," a determination reached unilaterally by ex parte arbitration in which neither Taiwan, nor China participated, and then declared void, how is Thitu an "island" and what is the basis for a Philippine claim that was never raised in modern times until after WWII? In any case, UNCLOS has no jurisdiction over territorial disputes which preexisted its adoption. Therefore its decision as to the South China Sea claims of the Philippines are void ab initio. The Chinese claims are historically based, their position is that after the Japanese Imperial claims to the islands and their associated maritime features were eliminated by the allies, title to the islands and associated historical maritime claims reverted to China. The US had never considered the South China Sea features part of the Philippine territorial limit during the colonial period.

Professor McCarty's research revealed that a valid Philippines claim doesn't exist (as a historical matter). I don't know at what point he expresses it in this video which is a general discussion of previous western recognition that the Paracel and Spratly islands were historically Chinese, which the western powers deliberately chose to ignore that after WWII. The video is an excellent historical explanation of the background of the South China Sea "dispute."
