That draft of mine from Nov. 13th - Trump and Europe: Partners or Rivals?

Ok, I just found that in my draft section. Now, it has come to haunt me and I post it in relations to some comments I made this morning, Sunday 22nd of January, 2017.

(BTW, I think we would need a Nightly OPEN THREAD on weekends. I comment at EST early night hours and don't know where to put them. Would be nice we had an Open Thread during night time hours on the weekend)

Here starts my old draft:

That's what some in the German media are discussing. May be you want to know? I can't help to admit that it smells like a war between the US and Europe is coming or we all will live under a global right-wing faschist oligarchy. And as always we are torn apart between the US and Russia.

I hate it and can't bare the thought.

Here is the video:

Here ends my old draft.

Now this is an article I wanted to post to "round up the current views in the world" about the situation we are in.

Pope warns against Hitler-like leaders coming to power on wave of populism - Published time: 22 Jan, 2017 08:21

Well, I like this pope. We could have still the old one, you know, the German one, what was his name (Pope Benedict XVI, Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger). You think he would have said what Pope Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, said? I don't think so.

Pope Francis warned against populist leaders, saying that Germany came to elect one in 1933, and ended up with Adolf Hitler as its dictator.

Crises provoke fear, alarm. In my opinion, the most common example of European populism is Germany in 1933... A people that was immersed in a crisis, that looked for its identity until this charismatic leader came and promised to give their identity back, and he gave them a distorted identity, and we all know what happened,”

he said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Hitler did not steal power,

the Pope said.

He was elected by his people and then he destroyed his people.

In times of crisis, we lack judgment, and that is a constant reference for me... That is why I always try to say: talk among yourselves, talk to one another,”

he added.

Ratzinger wouldn't have said that. Just saying. I like me my Pope Francis and am even not catholic or religious, but I like people speaking truth to power, even when it comes from a Pope.

favor by closing down NATO and having distant, but correct, diplomatic relations with us. I think the USA could use a decade of isolationism and draw back from Obama's provoking stances against both Russia and China. It would also be very good to withdraw from the middle east and dismiss the military officers and the mercenaries from service.

And, as someone said here, say to Israel, "You're all grown up now, you're on your own and move the hell out of the house."

. . . and the only "war" it mentioned is a trade war, NOT a shooting war. Simply because TTIP didn't go through does not change the US's relationship to Europe, so even the thought of there developing a trade war seems unsubstantiated.

Similarly, if the US bails of NATO responsibilities, as Trump has opined, that is not a war with Europe, just a casting adrift of the smaller EU nations that cannot carry much clout on their own.

So I think your reaction is a bit overdramatic.

That said, I think it is obvious that the European nations severally and together need to discount any connection to the US. The new President will be a loose cannon. If they could get us to build a wall around us, that would be the best outcome.

may be I read too many publications from the left ....
but I have zero trust in Trumps ability to be coherent and consistant in anything he will say and what he does is unknown. The only hope I have is that he knows so little about other countries that he is relating to them only in trade and economic terms. I could imagine that even if US is not engaged in wars with Europe that the US is indirectly inciting wars within Europe, what is always a disaster. And if it comes to military engagements against each other, it's always the European countries that get bombed, it's not the US. I am scared of the right-wing rise of extremists and violence in Europe. That was never a real threat the last sixty years. All of the sudden it's a reality.

Ok, I am just a nervous wreck. I entertain the dream that somehow Trump will not be inaugurated. That would be one kind of an American dream, heh? May be that one will come true for a change, as all other dreams usually never come through.

And trade wars can't lead to shooting wars? Hmm.

with all the immigration pressure due to wars/climate change. That same pressure (not from climate change, yet) is dramatized by Trump, but as I expected, he may make POTUS a part-time job. Who knows? Things may get worse, who knows? Are you finished moving, mimi?

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

The Right caused a war in Europe nearly 80 years ago, but we know for a fact that Hillary had Syria in her gunsights, and possibly Russia too. Things change, times change, the Right is ugly, but I see this manifestation of it turning inward, not aggressively expanding, and we can live with that, literally.

We survived George Bush, and we'll survive Donald Trump.

Peace in Europe is another thing, but refusing to sign on to stupid US adventures would go a long way towards keeping the peace. Infinite NATO expansion and constricting Russia doesn't help keep the peace. Backing off from crazy US policy goals will help rehabilitate the European Center and Left (I call Merkel Center, in light of Pegida).

we have to fear absolutely nothing. All is ok and safe. /s ... give me a break.

I hope this strategist Steve Bannon guy will at least learn to shave, when he is put into this important top advisor position. At least a little bit strategically placed respect, Sir, for the position in that office, may go a long way.

Ok. Good Night and Good Luck.

@dkmich
yes, I will, but I don't write much. My set up here in Germany is lacking and it will take me four to five more weeks to get my stuff and act together. If it's ok to be short and simple, I am interested in it.

@mimi I have no problem with short and simple. I think it has a lot to offer. QMS might be happy to take one weekend evening, and EL does a variety of open threads. EL has one up now. I am not sure if EL can be incorporated into our scheme, and EL is gone for a week or so. I will follow up on this and get back to you. When you are ready, give me a shout. No hurry.

Why don't you just start an open thread if there isn't one?

Just type open thread in the tags.

PS I like this pope too and I'm far from religious.

All the best!

as said above. Sorry, I was working the whole day and not time to respond on time. I am so stubborn to not have my cell phone with me all the time and I don't read blogs on my phone. I hope you can handle that.
