Dissent

open thread_7.jpg

Finally, some sunshine, and it looks like a few days of it too. Looking out my back window, I see chive onions, carrots, lettuce, potatoes, tomatoes, raspberries, and beans doing nicely.
Earthling2 has been doing a good job of tending and planting various flowers in and around the garden to attract the right bugs (bees) and repel the wrong kind.
Still hobbling around on this new knee but have kicked the walker to the curb and ski poles propel me now. Should be able to kick them aside in a week or two and get back to normal.
Have been spending a lot of time online as there is really nothing else to do except grow a couch potato indoors.
Hah. Success!
The MSM is sickening. Pure propaganda in every shade. Even Tom Cruise wears a Taiwan flag on his brand new flight jacket, Barf.
As TPTB get more desperate, it gets more dangerous to voice a contrary opinion on anything. Most Americans could not find Taiwan or Ukraine on a map.
My only form of dissent is painting a Ukrainian flag on my truck tailgate upside down. So far nobody has noticed.
So, what does everyone think about dissent in America in 2022?
The floor is open.

Glad to hear the new knee is responding to your care. It is a scary thing, joint replacement, but
if you regain functionality, it is good.

We spent the Memorial Day getting various veggies and plants in the ground. Next step is to
build the bunny / deer fences around our crops. Several flutter-by sightings yesterday.

I share my dissent by speaking issues with anyone who will listen. It amazes me how many
are both well informed and in agreement. Helps to feel less isolated when random strangers
are seeing the same things.

Oh, and by the way, if you remove the hash tag in front of Open Thread in the tags box, it will
publish in the OTs list. It is quite touchy that way Wink

@QMS
You're braver than me striking up conversations with strangers. America is so polarized today, even the two parties are fractured into multible factions. Civility has been lost. Snark is all that is left.
Thanks for the post.

the more most people cling to their “beliefs” and the less tolerant they seem toward divergent or contrary points of view. Friendships and family relationships require careful tiptoeing through talk of news or politics or public health issues. It puts a pretty severe damper on wide ranging explorations and discussion as people either hunker down with their chosen POV or come out swinging at the first sign of a “non believer” in their vicinity.

I sometimes think of the C99 photo of the swimmer reaching for a life saving device and the “free-range politics” logo as I wade through the comments here. I smell fear behind the tensions and contentions sometimes being expressed. I also feel fear in myself; fear for my family, my future and my grand children's future.

Dissenters seem an unwelcome addition for most, as plates are already piled high with many things to fear.

Our immediate future is uncertain. The possibility of unthinkable destruction on a hair trigger is palpable. Change, major ones, are in the wind and seem inevitable. What changes, I do not know.

Interpersonal relationships have become more volatile, even when discussing the weather, which for most of my life was a safe subject. Now it triggers many people.
I too worry about my kids and grandkids future.
The swimmer reaching for the floating flotsam has become much, much more than rescue from Daily Kos. It has become iconic. A place of civility.
Changes are in the wind. You are right on there.

Have the opportunity to write today, so I will. This is partly because I was a fool on Sunday while shopping and slung around too many feed sacks and other heavy objects so I strained some muscles. Sigh. Just turned 65 and even though I feel pretty good usually I need to respect my age!

Anyway . . . the garden looking good mostly. My cold-weather crops are mostly done and the goats discovered the remaining ones. Onions are a bust this year and I don't know why. Thought they were good until the leaves started turning brown about a month ago. Recently I have had 3 good years of huge onions. Potatoes look good, but won't know until I pull them up. It was so late this year I started my tomatoes from seed in the bales. Hot weather varieties in partial shade are blooming and look great. String beans OK, okra, Armenian cucumbers, and melons all look wonderful. As all you gardeners know, this is so exciting. And because of the colder winter, we have been munching on mulberries, dewberries, nectarines, and plums. Peaches and figs are coming along.

Thanks for listening!!

As to the main topic . . . dissent . . .

I do not listen to the MSM at all. The small glimpses I see are horribly inaccurate according to my sources. The Chinese foreign minister is always right on. I think probably many of you listen to the same as I see them mentioned in the Weekly Watch (thanks Lookout!). I don't do much dissenting because I don't go anywhere except to the store. My husband knows what I think and keeps himself happy ignoring it all and rebuilding old tractors. My daughter is the same, happily occupied with poultry and other pets. My son, who is usually completely on track with politics is drinking the kool-aid at the moment so we just agree to disagree for now.

I counter the fear with various spiritual practices - discovered the loving-kindness meditation metta recently, which is basically wishing wholeness for the world - and that helps. My opinion is that this nonsense has to happen for the United States of America to course correct. The truth will ultimately come out. Other nations of the world are tiring of the world's bully. Look at the Summit of the Americas. Look at the last meeting of BRICS. Look at the joint statement issued by China and Russia at the end of the Olympics. Look at how China is meeting with all the Pacific island nations and signing agreements of help, support, and cooperation. Look at how the sanctions are breaking down. European leaders are realizing they don't want their citizens to freeze to death.

Wishing you all a great week! I-m so happy

Glad to hear your garden is coming along. Sorry to hear about the onions. Maybe plant them in another part of your garden? I try to rotate failing veggies behind legumes the previous season as the beans put nitrogen back into the soil. But then I move everything around each year.
I don't watch or listen to or read the MSM anymore. It is junk news western worldwide.
I have to agree, the Chinese FM is remarkable. Between him and Sergai Lavrov, the Russian FM, are the two most brilliant diplomats in the world today.
Putin hit the mark when he labled the US "The Empire of Lies".
Have a great day.

but in the modern world it is best practiced in the privacy of one's own home, with the curtains closed and the lights off, as if it were somehow vulgar or unclean.

Depending on the topic, it can lead to being ventilated by either a cop who fears for his life, or someone packing heat who disagrees.

We're way down that slippery slope, and picking up speed. Can't wait for Da Gummint to finish rebranding their Ministry of Truth, so that I will finally know what I'm allowed to think. No smiley.

Glad to hear that the knee is doing well- I'll be joining you shortly!

I spent many days dissenting, protesting, and marching in the 60s/70s and felt relatively safe to do so.
Somewhere along the line it has morphed from policing a peaceful demonstration to active riot control, no matter the group or issue involved.
Good luck with your upcoming new knee. You will be amazed in the difference.

It is getting much harder to speak out on so many issues. Friendships and family ties are destroyed when someone doesn't go along to get along.
I am avoiding many hot topics nowadays, and your remarks about trigger happy cops is spot on. I believe the most dangerous people in the US are cops.
Still, I find opportunities to speak my mind. It is usually in public, too.
I still advocate a passive-aggressive boycott is the safest way the public could protest government. Find a way for people across the country to stay home and buy nothing for a few days. TPTB would flip out.

Even voting has been neutered as a form of dissent. It just doesn't matter what we want.
IMHO, only Putin and Xi will bring needed change, peacefully and without firing a shot, to America.
Have a good day.

@earthling1 Climate change is my bottom line political issue. We will need peace among nations to work together. Putin and Xi are the leaders who can do it. And yes, the Russian FM is spot on as well.

https://sputniknews.com/20220531/lawyer-for-hillary-clinton-sampaign-fou...

Sussmann, a former federal prosecutor and former partner at legal firm Perkins Coie, was acquitted on Tuesday of a single charge of lying to federal investigators when he claimed he wasn’t “acting on behalf of any client” when he delivered to the FBI alleged evidence of a secret backchannel between the Russian Alfa Bank and the campaign of Clinton's election rival, Republican candidate Donald Trump. That claim has since been separately debunked.

He effing billed Hillary for the information he gave them. I’d love to know what went on in the jury room behind closed doors. Did they maybe get a secret visitor? I’ve been following the trial and it sure looked like Durham made his case.

Stay tuned…

We just had 3 days of lovely rain and it’s brought my lawn back to green since my secondary water was 6 weeks late this year. Lots of broken pipes. The mountains got some welcomed snow and we’re almost normal for moisture this year. Would love to have been higher, but ya takes what you can get. It was nice and cool too, but heading for a huge heat up.

Will watch them today.
What we were taught in school about WW1 & WW2 come from the western world, or the victors. In the 90s, after the fall of the Soviet government (the other victors), troves of records were released and are revealing a whole new narrative about those wars.
I hope these videos reflect some of this new information.
Have a great day.

I also do and will generally withhold consent from most of the shit the government suggests, proposes, or demands. OTOH, I will not give any law enforcement type an excuse to kill or seriously cripple me if it can be avoided. It's a tricky proposition and fine line.

@enhydra lutris and I typically had to buy the stamps to send them to elected officials who never read them.
I have voted against people, not bothered to vote, protested, been threatened by cops, then the Princeton study shows none of this matters.
I wish the 99% could stick together like the 1% do. Instead, we argue and begin to hate one another over seemingly everything. We are way past the avoidance of politics and religion chat. Let's proceed on to include war, weather, gender ID, the correct stores to shop in, food, health care, race, vehicles, the cause of the down turn of the economy, how to eat properly, cops good/bad, and on and on.
It is harder and harder to keep above the fray, and by all accounts, it is going to be a real bitch sooner, rather than later.
Until the ship sinks, like you, I wish everyone well.
