Disability Caucus Open Thread 6/9/2016: The Glass Floor

I've mentioned before that even though people like to tell us there are all sorts of things to help us get on our feet, we're always punished when we choose to use them. Even when we do manage to land a job, it's often temporary through supported employment (Often at minimum wage) or we end up volunteering with no chance in hell of getting a paid job.

To make matters worse, applying for jobs is so impersonal that following up on leads or applications makes no difference when it comes to looking for a job. The only response you'll ever get is 'Well, we do everything online now so you'll have to wait for an email.' Of course these emails usually say something along the lines of 'Sorry, we found another candidate. Thanks for applying.'

In the public sector, it's almost as bad, mostly because veterans and transfers take first priority. This makes it nearly impossible to get in anywhere regardless of your skill set. To date I've applied to over 100 jobs in 4 years. I've only had maybe under 10 interviews. Not a single callback. Not a single hire. My employment specialist also accompanied me on a few of them, which at this point I'll just assume put me out of the running from the start.

So what do I have to do to break what I call the Glass Floor? Do I have to lie on my resume? Say I have skills I actually don't and just learn my way around? (Not that I'd lie about my lack of skills) I have read stories where people have gotten away with that. I don't have much experience and nobody seems to give a crap about college degrees anymore, plus I'm 32 even though I look like I'm closer to 40 thanks in part to my health situation. In any case, I can't figure it out. I'm sure some folks here can right pages on this.

See ya around,
Aspie

My social skills are not rated the best because I do tell the truth now. I became an actor during all social and business environments because my parents wanted me to be their star performer. I'm not sure Aspie is the right frame for me. I learned by the age of 5 how to work within the boundaries.

When my job was eliminated due to the 2008 financial debacle, no one would even call for an interview. There are so few jobs. Those being added are minimum wage or slave labor conditions. Education and experience are no longer valued by companies that are looking for cheap labor. The real unemployment numbers are not reflected in the official jobs' report.

Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. Stephen Hawking

a month, 3-4 job applications per day, plus followup emails on a regular basis, with a tickler file to remind me when it was time to contact them again. Do it all online, if possible; let them want you before they meet you in person.
