Democracy Sping begins! March from Philadelphia to DC with Occupation

Good morning all. How about some good news for your day? (A version of this is also up at TOP.)

Hope you are up for some good news for a change, news of our fellow citizens taking it to the streets.....

Emails from several groups have sent out invitations to a coordinated effort of diverse groups whose action includes a march from Philadelphia to an occupation in Washington DC :

Via Social Security Works email:

Today, Citizens from across the country are gathering in Philadelphia to march toward Washington. The march will culminate with a massive peaceful demonstration in our nation’s capital and demand that Congress act to strengthen our democracy.

Whoa, really and truly hopeful to see so many taking action.

The huge crowds at Sander’s rallies have been so inspiring.

Now people are making a stand to strengthen Democracy in this country, demanding changes to the broken system:

We demand that Congress pass:

The Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore and increase protections against voting discrimination.
The Voter Empowerment Act, which would modernize voter registration and ensure equal access to voting for all.
The Democracy For All Amendment, which would overturn U.S. Supreme Court decisions like Citizens United and limit the undue influence of money in politics.
The Government By the People Act/Fair Elections Now Act, which would amplify small contributions from everyday Americans.

Greedy liars on Wall Street have used inequality to build wealth and power for decades. They have used this wealth and power to attempt to dismantle our Social Security system, Medicare, Medicaid, and any regulations that stand between them and consolidating more power.

> Even if you can’t join the march, you can still show your support by signing this petition today.

Exciting to see, this is really and truly a grassroots BFD.

Just look at the groups supporting this

democracyawakening.org

We’re a broad coalition of organizations representing the labor, peace, environmental, student, racial justice, civil rights and money in politics reform movements. We share a firm belief that we will not win on the full range of policy issues we all care about until we combat attacks on voting rights and the integrity of the vote by big money.

Want to join our coalition? Endorse the mobilization.

We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.

That list of supporting organizations does my heart good. Have been following some of this at reddit; many thanks for putting the info here.

Time to come together to reclaim the power that appropriately resides with us. The social contract between the citizens and government has been breached when it is no longer "our" government. We have upheld our part of the bargain; the government has not. (We really need to put civics back into classrooms at all school levels.)

DC should be occupied.

We have tolerated just way too much and asking nicely hasn't helped.

heart sing. This is what democracy looks like. I wish I could join them but DC is way to far to go. Great to see people coming together and addressing our grievances outside the gates of Eden.

Great to see loads of activity outside of electoral politics - we are going to win this thing.

I am so happy this is happening! I have wanted something big like this to happen (although maybe torches and pitchforks will really get me involved). I would love to be a part of this wonderful event, but it is too far for me to go. I will definitely donate $ to the cause, though. PCCC sent an email. I'm sure you all have gotten it too!
