Biden 2020!

It's the "solution" to everything!

Amid discussion of resistance to Trump, he surprised me with talk of 2020, when he’ll turn 78. “I’ll run,” the vice president deadpanned, “if I can walk.” Three days later, he informed the Washington press corps that he wasn’t joking.

Biden isn’t likely to run, but keeping the door ajar gives him a bigger voice in Democratic Party debates. The one that worries him most is over repositioning to win back Trump voters. He has little patience with Democrats who want to move either left or right. “ ‘We gotta move to the center,’ ‘We gotta move to those white guys,’ ‘We gotta move to those working-class people’ or ‘We gotta double down on the social agenda.’ ” It’s a false choice, he said: “They are totally compatible. I have never said anything to the A.C.L.U. that I wouldn’t say to the Chamber of Commerce.”

A 78-year old insider that wants to "move to the center" and "double down on the social agenda".
Such a bold stand!
They must love, love, luuuvvv him at TOP.
Are you excited yet?

I like Joe Biden and don't want him to run and work in a bad job environment. He really didn't deserve to be treated badly as a President. The White House has a bad karma and a sickening effect on your character. His son I would have agreed to. But his father, no, I feel for him and want him to have a peaceful retirement.

@hungeski @hungeski Yes, I concur. The initial take is a misreading of what he's saying. Now, it's quite likely that his idea of speaking your truth wouldn't match up with what I personally think are the best ways for the country to have a chance to regain it's at least somewhat-illusory standards of justice and freedom, but at least he's repudiating centrism and rightward movement too. I don't think I'll ever get over how he helped to trash Anita Hill though. I should probably do some research to see if he has ever publicly apologized for his part of that utter and complete travesty that gave us old Uncle Clarence on the not-so-Supreme Court.

Joe Biden's Shameful Role in Creating America's Prison Nightmare

Is he hoping voters will just forget the fact that he led the charge for more police and more prisons?

*

I want to point out when I wrote the original bill that started this whole process, the so-called Biden crime bill that passed out of here ... about which the Senator from Utah stood up and said, as it was going out the door, "Can we call it the Biden-Hatch bill?'' — do you know how I wrote that bill? I asked the police organizations in this nation — the Fraternal Order of Police — "Give me the list," because I invited them all in before I wrote the bill.

But I invited the police organizations in and I said, "What do you need? You guys and women out in the street are getting the living devil beaten out of you.'' In the last 10 years we have increased the number of urban police by less than 1.1 percent, I say to my friend from California. They are getting beat up. They are putting their lives on the line for us and they are getting beat up.

We needed to have a special bill passed through here, Mr. President, to allow enough money to let the FBI agents buy weapons as powerful as the drug cartels have. They are getting beat up.

I'm tired of this back-slapping "Isn't humanity neat?" bullshit. We're a virus with shoes, okay? That's all we are. - Bill Hicks

Politics is the entertainment branch of industry. - Frank Zappa

Joe Biden wasn't even on my radar when he ran in 2008. I'll admit that he would have been a more tolerable candidate for multicultural neoliberalism than Hillary Clinton was if he had run in 2016, insofar as he isn't as obviously obnoxious as Hillary Clinton is -- but I was not in favor of him then, nor am I in favor of him now. This is one more laughable attempt by the Democratic Party to get people to support shitty politics.

I think it is probably necessary at this point to break the system, by which I mean break the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, and the people who stand behind both of them. In the past I thought that perhaps the Democratic Party could be reformed, but now I think this probably cannot be so -- or at the very least, if it happens, it will only happen when the left mounts a Tea Party-style hostile takeover and pries authority out of the hands of the people who run the Democratic Party and the people who own the Democratic Party. These people are never going to give up power willingly. They will attempt to confound us at every step. Any notions we might have had about the Democratic Party leadership giving us a fair fight should be dispelled as illusions by now. I suspect that in the event that a left insurgency actually seized control of the Democratic Party, the people who run it and the people who own it would rather sabotage it than let such an insurgency take power, as happened to George McGovern -- and he was hardly a radical in the grand scheme of things!

I personally think there is nothing left to be gained from working within the Democratic Party. Others may disagree; there was considerable discussion of that matter a few weeks ago (which I didn't participate in at the time). I'm not sure of the way forward, but I am reasonably certain that it is not within the Democratic Party. And to those of you who are determined to work within the Democratic Party in the future, remember what they did to Sanders and go into this with your eyes wide open. If you are a real leftist, know that these people despise you, and will happily betray you if you give them a chance. So expect the betrayal, and do not be surprised when it comes -- and when it comes, be prepared to fight them, Judo-flip their asses, and knock them the fuck out.

I wish I knew how to get to where we need to be, but I'm still working that out. I suspect it will have to be left to people smarter and wiser than me, but I will bend my mind to it, and if I come up with anything, I will be sure to share it.

Getting back to the topic of the diary, it occurs to me that "Biden 2020" symbolizes the intellectual bankruptcy of the Democratic Party, just like "Hillary 2016" (or, heaven help us, "Hillary 2020"). "Booker 2020," "Cuomo 2020," "Newsom 2020," and so on are less obvious signs of intellectual bankruptcy, but they look like intellectual bankruptcy to me.

That already happened, when Dean took over the DNC from Terry McAuliffe, and McAuliffe helpfully emptied the coffers on the way out. Not that Dean was a leftist, and at this time of day, he's totally useless, trying to leverage the shattered remnants of his credibility into support for Hillary Clinton.

@kakumeiji maru Also, sometimes I think the entire purpose of the Third Way, the DLC and all similar efforts IS (or was) to sabotage the Democratic party. There is a difference between the Tea Party takeover of the Republican Party and any potential takeover by real progressives in the Democratic Party: The Republicans welcomed everyone they possibly could, including the worst Tea Party types. The Democratic Party has not only shunned the Left, they have insulted the Left. There won't be a takeover. Maybe a takedown.

Barack Obama Is Preparing for His Third Term

BY JASON ZENGERLE

He was supposed to retire to a triumphant post-presidency. Then Trump happened. Now, as Jason Zengerle reports, Obama is gearing up for a political battle he never planned to wage—and has no intention of losing. . . .

In the weeks since the election, this Plan B has been taking shape, as Obama has consulted with a range of people, from current and former advisers to historians, about how he should conduct himself in his post-presidency, doing much of his thinking during long days on the golf course throughout his Hawaiian vacation in December.

While it’s clear that Obama will have to remain more immersed in politics than he’d planned, it remains a mystery what that role will now look like. Certainly he’ll be asked to help rebuild the Democratic Party. Already, Obama has been drawn into the jockeying among candidates vying to lead the Democratic National Committee—a process he expected to sit out. “Nobody wants to know what the Clintons think—they’re totally checked out,” one Obama aide complained to me in December. “It’s falling on us just by default.” . . .

To top that off, VP Biden is also staying in D.C.--ostensibly, because of Dr Biden's position at Northern Virginia Community College.

The concept of plutocracy may be advocated by the wealthy classes of a society in an indirect or surreptitious fashion, though the term itself is almost always used in a pejorative sense.

Okay that is how I meant it. Thanks. No more Ds or Rs for me, now I will try to spot the plutocrat, no matter the affiliation. Obscene wealth is the problem in my view, insulated bubble people.

@lizzyh7 Maybe not overall, but I was just going by the portion that was quoted in this post. I didn't read the whole article because my stomach isn't strong enough, especially not early in the day. I'm sure what he would end up advocating would in fact be some version of so-called "common sense" that would end up being exactly the same old thing: lip service to social issue stuff the left agrees on that doesn't cost the rich folks any actual money or power, aka crumbs. The pitch he's making in the snippet quoted here seems to me to at least be pretending to advocate for doing the "right" thing, whatever that means to him. Actually, what he's probably really advocating is resisting the labeling of his policy preferences as political strategies by pretending that they're just sincere beliefs. Whether it's true or not, many of his ideas would not be acceptable to me based on his past choices and actions.

....Biden would have won if he had run. I think, like someone above, that the establishment was keeping the path clear for Clinton so Biden wouldn't want to interfere with that, or would he? I have no doubt the 2016 nomination was pretty much promised to her after losing in 2008 but maybe he didn't care so much for Clinton either. It was just bad timing for Biden to lose his son so close to the 2016 election.

Even if Biden had run I would not have voted for him. Talking to blue collar voters is one thing. Legislating for blue collar workers is another. He, to me, was still too establishment and more of the same.

That's one of the things that galled me. They could have put up any halfway competent person in a suit who could get up in front of cameras and give a halfway decent speech, run a press conference, and gladhand his way through a rope line. Or her way--despite the constant barrage of sainted victimhood talking points coming from Team Clinton, gender was not the issue.

And they gave it to Hillary "My turn! Mine!" Clinton. Which is the equivalent of projectile vomiting on the American populace and then demanding, in injured tones, why they don't like it.
