OT WE 19 AUG 26 ~ Road to Nowhere
Submitted by QMS on Wed, 08/19/2026 - 5:00am

~

The Talking Heads, a popular group formed in NYC during the late 70's, became an iconic symbol of new wave
music. Fusing punk, art rock, funk, and dance music with an anxious, well-groomed aesthetic.
~
I first heard of them in the mid 80's while on shore leave in Newport at a dance club. Have been a fan ever since.
~
~
Some of their more popular hits include ”Psycho Killer,” “Life During Wartime,” and “Once in a Lifetime”.
All fun songs. Do you have another one you enjoy?
~
All of this aside, this is an open thread so chime in with whatever you have.

Good morning...
I don't really know Talking Heads...that's what I call news commentators. I'm not as musically educated as EL.
I'm a thousand miles from nowhere I guess...

Hope all is well. Thanks for the OT!

Burning down the house
I think if Marcel Duchamp had a rock band, it would sound like this. The rocumentaty "Stop Making Sense" was pretty good.
Hiya, good morning folks
.
Another day chuck-full of changes created by endless wars.
Nobody does it better than the US. Bomb, destroy and kill.
With a psycho killer "in charge". Not a good future that I can see.
It is one thing to pay attention to new developments, but taking them
to heart is unhealthy. Ignore and reject the consequences? Mental
health is perhaps more important.

Wang Yi is in Seoul
I wonder if this was preplanned or if China responded that quickly to Trump's "overture to Kim." The funny thing about saving defense costs- the US troops mobilized for the UFS exercise were already moved to Korea when the president made his spur of the moment announcements and claims about a dialogue with North Korea. So I don't think any money was "saved." This is a carrot and stick approach by Trump. I think Wang is there to tell President Lee to steer a steady course and not be intimidated.

I saw another headline where Bill Gates was meeting with the SK Hynix Chairman. Don't think Orangae has any idea how complex these major capital infrastructure investments are. They require a lot of technical details in the negotiations.
Hi Q! Thanks for the OT. I had a little story to post that wasn't about the news but I pushed one wrong button and it vaporized. Been very busy because Ms. So isn't well.
己所不欲,勿施于人。
I watched more reports on Wang Yi
His presence in South Korea was most likely planned in advance and is part of a series of high level diplomatic meetings between South Korea and China including earlier summits. It is anticipated that Lee and Xi would meet at the APEC meeting at Shenzhen in November. So I'm guessing our president among other considerations didn't want to upstaged, and then came up with this spur of moment spat with South Korea accompanied by claims of a diplomatic dialogue ongoing with North Korea's Kim to meet with Kim at APEC. There is silence in North Korea. I imagine claims of ongoing arrangements or talks of some kind with Kim will go on unless the US media backlash such as occurred in 2018 and 2019.
The guy working on our back patio is a Korean-American, I was just joking around with him. Ms. So gave him some sikhye yesterday, a sweet rice desert drink. Sikhye 식혜 ( Maangchi graduated from Ms. So's high school. She has a lot of great Korean recipes.) When I made the delivery of shikhye at the church Sunday had fun talking with the church elders and pastor. I told them I was a delivery boy tekbae, when they asked who I was. They asked me to stay and have lunch. They want me to meet their husbands on their once a month "husbands day."

Ahh, that deadly wrong key
.
Happens to me frequently. Think your analysis of trumpet spouting
nonsense about No. Korea is probably correct. Sorry Ms. So is under
the weather. Hope she recovers soonish.

I remember when
they were first starting out, and came up to Boston to play a gig at the Rat. A bunch of us Boston punk rockers went to see them, and it was a good time, although a bit surreal. They were very button-down old-money preppy, not the slightest bit punkish, with the pink Izod shirts and all- pure RISD (Rhode Island School of Design). But they had a very definite spark, for sure, and they sold the hell out of that show.
We called them the "Talking Straights" at the time. We might have been a little bit wrong. And the rest, as we know, is history.
After that, I actually adopted the pink-Izod-shirt thing for my playing costume for a year or so, but I ripped the sleeves off to make it a tank and used one of them as a headband. And I spraypainted the shirt and burned a few holes in it in strategic places. You know the drill...
Which begs the eternal question, of course: is it better to be young and stupid and have no future, or old and stupid and have no past? (;-)

I like your pink Izod story
.
I had thought they had a RISD connection, but couldn't find it
so left that out. I know they were all art students but all references
were to NYC. Must be AI induced factoids.
Just made a white sausage gravy poured over cornbread for b'fast.
Could have used a couple eggs, but was too hungry to go an extra step.

OOoooh
sausage gravy...
https://our.risd.edu/post/137158196499/shared-language has a picture of Weymouth, Frantz, and Byrne, even before the Izod shirt era. Not even the slightest bit punk! Here, they look like a bunch of itinerant folk-rockers. (;-)

@QMS They met and were
They met and were students at the Rhode Island School of Design. That school has a very good rep for attracting talent.

I was into Talking Heads by around 1979. New Wave was
beginning to take off, and I loved it! Remain In Light is an iconic statement of the genre.
Fear Of Music ain't too shabby either.
Thanks, Q. Rec'd!!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Good morning Cap'n Q, thanks for the OT and the music vid.
I guess my favorite talking heads songs are Burning down The House and Life During Wartime. They're one of those groups that isn't really good radio music because the visuals are important to their act, so they probably don't get as much air time here as they should.
Fear of Flying: There are folks who are radwaste and radleaks apologists. Whenever there are news items concerning such things they always pooh pooh them and their significance with a ton of pseudo-scientific probabilistic blather about risks of harm from radiation, allowable exposure limits in millirems, dosimeters, and such, quite often including snarky statements that those harboring "excessive" concern about radiation shouldn't fly because of increased radiation incidence at those altitudes, Heh, turns out that they are right.

(Insert chorus of "Rocky Mountain High" here). There is, of course, no such thing as an absolutely safe level of radiation, it's always a crapshoot.

Yup. The altitude effects
on background radiation are very, very real. However, dosimetry is a very arcane topic, and comparisons of dose rates are very difficult to do in any meaningful way. But I'm not going to let that stop me... (;-)
I've been running a little solar/terrestrial radiation observatory here as a hobby for a number of years now. Here at 6700 feet, we have a much higher background radiation level than sea-level folks. And, being above so much of the atmosphere, it lets me easily record the radiation bursts from solar flares: there is much less attentuation due to the atmosphere.
The average background radiation dose rate I observe here is ~162nSv/hr, gamma-only, or 1.42mSv/yr. But that gamma contribution is relatively small potatoes: the overall dose here from all sources (alpha+beta+gamma) comes out to about ~11mSv/year, which is a little more than double what you'd get at sea level (~4.5mSv/yr).
The bulk of the dose we get here, like everywhere else close to the ground, is dominated by inhaled Radon and Thoron gases (222Rn and 220Rn): cosmic sources (all gamma) only contribute about 1/3 here, whereas they'd be about 1/10 at sea level.
In an airliner at 35,000ft, the solar/cosmic gamma rate would dominate by far: ~2380nSv/hr, a factor of 20 higher than here. And since they are heavy gases, there isn't much 220/222Rn floating around up there. As a result, the average annual additional dose rate for aircrews is guesstimated at ~2.19mSv/yr, all gamma. So the additional dose is about half of what you would get at sea level as a total from all sources, handwave handwave.
The difference, of course, is that we high-altitude folks are always here, soaking up all that beautiful Radon and Thoron as it blows out of the valleys of the Rockies 24/7- whereas you can only be at 35,000 ft for relatively short periods of time. And the contribution from the Radon and Thoron is primarily alpha and beta, which is applied directly to the tissues of the lungs by inhalation- as opposed to gamma, which goes wherever it damned well pleases.
Anyway, when they nukes start flying, I intend to be in a position to record the arrival and passage of the plumes- assuming that I haven't assumed the plasma state myself in the process. I'll report back.

Oh yeah, I'm hip to the effect of altitude, I just love the
fact that the rad apologists' favorite sarcastic point is now documented to be a definite health risk.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Understood, and I remembered
that from previous conversations. I just wanted to throw in some extra details from my hobby, once again for any interested student.
Had a nice M8.1 flare at 11:42UTC this AM, and was still able to see it in my local data despite the fact that the sun wasn't quite up yet- so all scatter and secondary X-rays. The X-class flares at midday during the solar maximum, with the sun near the zenith, were fun to watch in the data. We're coasting down the back side of the maximum now, for this cycle- we're starting Solar Cycle 25. But if we have anything approaching a Carrington-class event, which was guesstimated at X47 or thereabouts, I'd expect my poor little instrument to flat-out saturate.
Of course, everything else will saturate, too. (:-)
I have a secondary instrument in the observatory that uses a pancake Geiger tube, rather than a scintillator, just to keep tabs on the alpha and beta levels from our local Radon breezes. I wish I'd had it back when Fukuskima occurred- that's what really got me started watching this stuff, tracking the arrival of the plume from that minor unpleasantness. Anyhoo, if the air does indeed become uraneous once again for whatever reason, I'm set to make the measurements, at least for as long as I can...

Younger David Byrne was quite neurotic, and pretty much beginning with Speaking in Tongues Byrne decided to pretend to a significant extent that he was happy. And when Byrne dissolved the Talking Heads in 1991, without negotiation, he pretty much disowned all of his Talking Heads contacts. Older, wiser David Byrne more recently expressed some small degree of regret for the attitudes of younger David Byrne. It must be argued, however, that if they turned down $80 million to stage a reunion tour, that younger David Byrne must still be alive and well. It's not like any of these people had anything so pressing in their lives that they couldn't have just grabbed the cash, done the tour, and broken up again.

@Cassiodorus Unfortunately, Mr. Byrne
Unfortunately, Mr. Byrne is blessed/cursed with a bit (?) of over sized ego. Unless one of the senior citizen aged members of Talking Heads is dying of cancer, etc., there is no reason why he can't wise up, smoke a peace pipe, and play once more with the three people who helped put his/their names in lights.
