Between the Lines: Wars at Home and Abroad

Hey folks, and welcome to between the lines. So I was a bit pissed off today after finding out that the VA had been floating some things about involving sending me and mine back to the street. Somebody must have pointed out how that tends to go, and they immediately backtracked. There's still a lot of bullshit out there, and a lot of things that need to be deconstructed, and as a person back on the front lines, albeit unwillingly, I need to help those around me navigate the military parlance.

First off, we're absolutely now at war with Palestine, Unofficially. Yep, our forces in Afghanistan are on alert. Wait, I hear you cry, that makes no sense, because that's hell and gone from Israel... Except it's in the exact same command area. Yep, they're expecting us to have to fly over to help out Israel in their struggle against the evil oppressors... Seriously, this is just another turd in a punchbowl that we should have stopped drinking from a LOOOONG time ago.

And the VA is now looking to cut war related compensation from Veterans, period. Yep, the VA secretary has decided that what Veterans REALLY need is not compensation for disability but rather, "We have to focus benefits on enabling independence so veterans can succeed on their own."

Yep, did you catch that shit? Ten seconds after talking about "We're not cutting benefits" he segues into how veterans need to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. So, what is he suggesting? That's right, review boards where Vets get to go with hat in hand to prove they're deserving of pension. These assholes won't stop until every single one of us dies on the street penniless, but secure in the knowledge that if only we'd tried just a little harder, we could have succeeded...

Oh and just a little validation for the deductions established in this column... I hate being right, but the Army just released new numbers admitting there are far MORE troops in Syria and Iraq than they claimed even last month. Of course, these numbers are trending downward, or so they claim... which I find hilarious because if true it means apparently the DOD has discovered the mythical dragons teeth which cause warriors to grow from the ground.

So, unsurprisingly, even when we nail back a board into place, the entire rotten system continues to sag, creak, and threaten to collapse. It would help if the politicians would stop putting the goddamn termites in charge of remodeling.

I have a friend who works for the VA and she's told me stories about the waste and fraud that make me sick. She's already sickened and cynical and is counting her days until retirement. All that crap about focusing on independence is crap too. Their leadership has been corporatized from what my friend tells me, it's all metrics and measurement now, with very little actual service to veterans themselves. And they apparently rely heavily on private colleges and training programs, which are really just a another sick waste of money that leaves the vets ill prepared for civilian life. Damn them for even considering taking away benefits. There's just nothing more to say except a bunch of screaming cuss words at the stupidity in this country. And the godamned greed above all.

@lizzyh7 We have 500 new Colonels in the Army.

Our entire structure is far too top heavy, and we're losing track of everything that separates an honorable military from a mercenary band.

And since the rest of my thoughts are NSFI, here's a British sketch summing up my feelings on how much respect I think these tin soldiers at the top deserve.

@lizzyh7 They aren't stupid, they are brilliant , with semantics. And they are a bunch of greedy fuckers. And the repugnicans are all of that and more. They are greedy and callous.

What they are doing is stupid. And I don't understand what exactly is their end game? What is their exit strategy? Why do they want this much suffering? Do they think it's going to end well? Do they think they will be able to parrot all this free-market pablum forever?

At some point the shit hits fan and everyone gets dirty. Do they just think this (USA) is their little golden goose, and they are going to fly off and control it with drones from New Zealand?

It's like you can just feel it everywhere, we are on the brink of collapse. Everyone (almost) is just getting by, and we are all leveraged out on debts. People are stressed and angry everywhere you go...

Lose your job and start getting hungry, you're liable to do almost anything in your power, to fix that if it gets bad enough..lots of people out work and hungry, with children to feed, and you got a mob. Fold in all the guns in this country, you got something else entirely.

Apology if threadjack.

@SnappleBC I hesitate to make the comparison between what soldiers do and what I did as a campaign manager, which have absolutely nothing in common (please understand that I know that). But the general pattern of "Thanks for what you gave us, now fuck off and die!" holds.

Funny thing about that.

I ran across this at Alternet:

Why Is It So Difficult for Veterans With PTSD to Get Service Dogs?

Waiting lists run a year to two years, and nonprofits estimate a trained service dog costs, on average, $20,000. Campaigns on sites like GoFundMe attest to the many who can’t afford a dog or don’t get hooked up with nonprofits.

There appears to be a VA study that questioned the effectiveness of therapeutic service dogs for PTSD. And of course there are budgetary restraints to consider:

There may be hope if a bill with bipartisan support before the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, H.R. 2327, or the PAWS Act, passes. It would provide nonprofits $10 million in grants to provide service dogs to veterans with PTSD. However, in typical doublespeak, a VA spokesperson said, “While VA does not support the PAWS Act at this time primarily for reasons related to funding, VA Secretary Shulkin wants to work with Congress to find a way to make properly trained dogs available for veterans’ emotional support in a way that makes sense within VA’s budget.”

The callous disregard just never ends.

@Meteor Man who just happens to be the first non-vet to hold the position.

In other words, HE IS THAT FUCKING STUPID. He's absolutely the worst possible choice for the job, and is obsessed with privatization, and "Patient Choice" which just means choosing between food and health care.

@Meteor Man My friend has told me that the guy in charge before they put her in charge (unwillingly really, but she's a black female and they needed to hit a metric don't ya know) approved so many just outright stupid things to "train" veterans. One guy was going to be a scuba diver in, wait for it......Abilene, TX. OK. VA paid for equipment, training, etc and then of course there is no business opportunity for that guy unless he's going to move. Then there's the one who was going to be a golf pro who got clubs, memberships, etc. But nothing long term. She's told me of guys being told they can get degrees from private, for profit "colleges" which are worthless but VA will pay for that.

She has gotten extremely cynical and cannot wait to retire. I know hers is only one small part of it, but the whole thing is not what it is supposed to be. And the good ones like her will leave and are leaving, while the one's who don't really care stick around forever. She actually had one she had to finally fire as that person was not following up with veterans seeking benefits - she was one of those who just threw their applications in the garbage. Took my friend MONTHS to get rid of her and the bitch got paid the entire time! And while all that happens, veterans go homeless for fuck's sake.

@lizzyh7 so vets come up with fairly desperate ideas for training, simply because it's what they can scrape together to get some funds together. (Guaranteed job in this economy? Fuck no...) However, I will agree some of those are pretty awful.

Was going to apply to help getting my degree finished for a while there, since my communications skills are off their charts. (Not kidding, and I actually don't feel ashamed about bragging on this one. I've always done extremely well on vocabulary and reasoning tests, and the Voc Rehab ones were extremely easy.) Then my PTSD kicked in and I spent months not leaving the house, so there went that idea. Probably should have tried anyway, but I just couldn't get out of the house.

@detroitmechworks and so does my friend. She has had to talk common sense with a few guys, especially older ones, about just what a degree will actually get them. She no longer works with the vets at all though, she supervises. And she hates that. She sees the ugly now and she did not used to be nearly so cynical. It's the Corporate disease. Our whole society is gripped by short term profits and greed. Along with a bunch of worthless metrics that do little good.

@Meteor Man I'm guessing everybody feels like they can't afford to give right now--
but what if we could work toward funding one dog for one vet?

Though I have a hard time believing service dogs really cost 20K apiece.

@Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal Even though I'm not supposed to have a deposit for a service animal, I'd have to actually get one certified which costs far more.

More of a bird person anyway. I'd love it if it were legal to keep Scrub Jays as pets. They're incredibly smart little guys and absolutely not a cage bird... but I digress, and the fact my SO wants a cat kinda nixes that whole idea in the bud.

@detroitmechworks

your social worker can write a letter saying that it's needed and your landlord has to let you get one. No pet deposit either. This is the law.

OK, let me just say right now:

Any DC politician who says they don't have the budget for helping vets can go fuck themselves right in the ear. Because they damned well know that they have all the military budget they want, as much as they want, forever and damned few questions asked.

Now tell me you don't have the budget for veterans, you fucker.

Trump asked for $18 billion more than the regular budget and congress gave him $54 billion for the fun of it. You're damn right that they can find money for veterans if they wanted to. Point is, they don't. Cannon fodder have done their job, now like the rest of the people sucking off government, die already. This can't be anymore plain.

I want to thank you for shining a light on the VA and how veterans have to fight tooth and nail for the benefits they have been promised when they raised they're hands and took the oath to defend this country.
In my case i had to do back flips to even be enrolled in the VA healthcare system.I served in the US NAVY from 1976-1980,because I did not serve during wartime,Vietnam era ended in 1975,I was rated at Group 8 that does not qualify for medical enrollment. The only way to qualify in group 8 is to file a hardship due to low income, get this if a Vet makes 30K or more a year the VA considers that Vet as HIGH INCOME and disqualifys the Vet from enrollment. In my case I was totally disabled in 2015 from a back injury lost my job and could not afford to pay my heath insurance,I needed help but the VA fought me for 2 years before letting me enroll. The ONLY help I received was from a old ARMY Vet that volunteered to be my patient advocate and guided me through the application process and knew the VA system in and out if it wasnt for this man I would still be waiting,so I want to thank you again for helping fellow Vets
