Apathy, Elections and What's Next

republicrats.png

Stardate April 5, 2017. Approx. 580 days until the next U.S. election, just over a year before the serious campaigning starts for the midterm elections of 2018. Currently Donald Trump is president, the republican party has the majority in the House and Senate and the serfs are as screwed as ever. More than ever.

So what's in store for us now? Another election? Is that what's next? We have to endure Trump and this unrepresentative government for another year and a half, then we get to have another election. All the talk is about how the republican party is going to do this and the democratic party is going to do that with nary a word about third parties or REVOLUTION. What ever happened to REVOLUTION? Shit man, we're so lame. We know what happened with the 2014 election:

"historically low turnout in last week’s midterm elections — the lowest in more than seven decades — was bad for Democrats, but it was even worse for democracy. In 43 states, less than half the eligible population bothered to vote, and no state broke 60 percent.

In the three largest states — California, Texas and New York — less than a third of the eligible population voted. New York’s turnout was a shameful 28.8 percent, the fourth-lowest in the country, despite three statewide races (including the governor) and 27 House races.

Turnout this month was the lowest in any federal election since 1942.
Over all, the national turnout was 36.3 percent; only the 1942 federal election had a lower participation rate at 33.9 percent. The reasons are apathy, anger and frustration at the relentlessly negative tone of the campaigns."

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/12/opinion/the-worst-voter-turnout-in-72...

Nobody's talking about that either.

"Apathy, anger and frustration". How about boycott, protest and refusal
to participate in a sham? How about people know this is not democracy so they have given up? Blaming it on apathy is a cop out, a way for the ruling class narrative disseminators to provide a reason that will be benign, not a threat, to their duopoly political system. "There's nothing wrong with the system, people are just apathetic. They just don't give a damn".

Apathy is the lack of interest, enthusiasm or concern. Even if a large number of people are apathetic, simply blaming it on apathy doesn't explain why people are apathic. Maybe most of those who are apathetic are so because they know it's not democracy to vote in this political system. Maybe they don't feel it makes any difference whether they vote or not, the rich, as always, make all the decisions. Maybe they believe there's no difference between the two major political parties so it's useless to pick sides. Maybe they're fucking right.

Why hasn't another Occupy occurred? Why did it only occur during 2011, coincidentally the same year the U.S. manufactured Arab Spring occurred? Did you know that the Arab Spring was manufactured? Do you know that Occupy wasn't? It's now going on six years and nothing approaching Occupy has occurred again even though conditions are certainly more FUBAR than they were in 2011, year after year, day after day. That's seems peculiar.

The 2014 elections were "even worse for democracy" according to the NY Times. What democracy? Democracy is defined as power to the people. The hippies knew that and made it their mantra. "Power to the People!!" When only 36% of the people vote for politicians from two corrupted, neoliberal and imperialist political parties that are controlled by the rich and powerful (because that's how you become powerful) who proceed to FUCK the serfs, terrorize the planet, and funnel all the wealth and power to themselves, that is not power to the people.

Now there's alot of talk about how each duopoly subsidiary is divided and primed for reformation or even reinvention. The democratic party is in the midst of soul searching while nothing for the Serfs is even considered in Congress. It's all about Russiagate, the war OF terror, fake news, budget reductions for domestic programs, anything BUT service to the Serfs, "representation".

Brand New Congress, Justice Democrats, Socialist Democrats of America, the list is getting long of those preparing to make an impact in the next election. The next election. The next election.

I remember years ago a famous professional athlete decided to "hold out" from playing until his contract demands were met. He ended up holding out the entire year, missing out on millions of dollars in salary. When asked why he did it, he said "I will not take less than I'm worth". At that level of negotiation, it's all relative. But for the Serfs, it's no longer relative, it's imperative that we refuse to take less than we're worth.

By the time the 2018 elections come around there's no reason to believe "apathy, anger and frustration" won't be at higher levels than in 2014. That could translate to an even lower level of participation in this demockery than the 36% in 2014.

Some might think the answer is to get more people to vote. I think it's time to take a good look at this political system and make some major changes. It ain't working and the people know it. This duopoly political system serves to perpetuate rule by the oligarchy. We can't keep going from election to election thinking things are going to change. We the People have been doing that for too long and where has it got us? Take a look at our representative government now.

All I can deduct from this that logically you might think of getting less people to vote. Oh la la, that's so 'risqué'. Refuse to vote? I would, if someone had the idea to demand a minimum number of voter participation at elections, like say 75 percent. Anything less than 75 percent voter participation would be "a voided election". If that would be the law of the land and only 28 percent would vote, any vote for any corrupt or bribed politician would be 'dead on arrival'.

Well, that's from someone who is not allowed to vote in the US. What else would you expect from me? Smile

heh, occupy my mind, I am going beyond FUBAR.

@mimi @mimi good thoughts. I've advocated for a boycott of elections before, or partial elections like boycotting the presidential election. So in that respect you could deduce I favor less people voting. But I don't think it matters, the key is getting to a point where we can have an honest national discussion about this political system. There are so many problems with it, it's inherently flawed, and we'll just keep getting the same results no matter which party is in power under this duopoly. Trying to tweak it or force people to participate won't work. The track record is too long to ignore. They (like Eugene Debs) were talking about this 100 years ago and people probably will be in another 100 years.

@Big Al
tried to promote changes of the campaign finance laws, I was confused.

I read his bio again on Wikipedia and it's too complicated to go through his many activities, positions and political view points.

All I remember is that people "had a pity" with him and "mocked" him for his attempts. I thought that was unfair and rather brutal. I think I gave up on ever understanding what to do about the FUBAR situation of the political parties and electoral college voting system.

against Cuomo, for Stein. And my legislative district is an R. No representation. Except at Township level. Plus I #Dem Exited so it's pick and choose. Considering just going to ground like others, next time. What will it matter?

I am actively depressed with a post-surgery foot. My mood is dim. I have multiple plants to dig holes for, and I am not supposed to get my cast wet? Friday unveiling for a second time, staples removed? Plus another gall bladder attack, no food today.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

@riverlover My supposed rep is a republican also, not that it matters, the previous democrats wasn't much better. But she's far down the rung and really doesn't do much at all that I can tell.
Hope you feel better.

@Big Al I used to be pleased to see no Kansan on those placards showing democrats voting against progressive bills or in favor of regressive ones. Then I remember Kansas has no dems in congress.

There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.

Can't get power anyplace but at the polls. We have to win, or we have to make them lose. Until we can hurt them, they get to ignore us.

@dkmich of polling places, mostly in poor/working class areas where voters are required to stand in line for 4, 6, or more hours to vote, assuming they can afford the time off from work, what do you expect voter turn out to be?

While I have not officially Dem-exited, I am convinced that no matter who I vote for, it is a waste of my time. Perhaps some local offices may be worth it. I do not even know. With all the redistricting and court battles over such, I was not even sure who my rep in the House is and I had to look him up. I knew he would be a Republican, so it really did not matter. Tallahassee is a blue island in a sea of red. Gerrymandering split Tallahassee so as to dilute the vote although a conservaDem did win one of the districts. As far as I can tell, with few exceptions, both sides are working for the same team and it is not the people's team.

@gulfgal98 Voting for anything above dog catcher is like shutting the bathroom door when you're the only one home. It does no good, serves no purpose, but you feel better.

First is that the reason for all this apathy and anger is the "negative tone" of the campaigns. Yes, the tone was the issue! Again with the idea it's just the messaging/marketing that's the problem, not the policies and actions of politicians and the parties.

Then there's this one:

Showing up at the polls is the best way to counter the oversized influence of wealthy special interests, who dominate politics as never before.

Oh? I'd like to know how "showing up at the polls" is the best way, or even a slightly useful way, to "counter the influence of wealthy special interests."

The only options on the ballot are all candidates who represent the interests of corporate puppet masters. Showing up at the polls doesn't do squat to counter them. Neither does not voting, of course. The Powers that Be don't care about how small turnout is.The two-headed snake always wins, and that's all that matters to them.

I want to believe that a peaceful, real revolution that gives power to the people is possible. I came of age believing in that slogan, believing that people were waking up, the peace movement was growing and our generation was going to really change things.

Sigh. I'm over it.

I'm in the boycott camp now when it comes to elections. "Just say no." Something really huge would have to happen before I'll be showing up at the polls again. This past year was the final straw. I've soured on politics for good I think.

or not I don't know, but I will vote here in Illinois for some local stuff and maybe a few others if there is an Independent or Green candidate. However we have a real interesting race for governor coming up in 2018, Chris Kennedy ( Robert's fifth son) and J B Pritzker ( yes, those Pritzker's, Penny's younger brother) want to be the Dem candidate to challenge Bruce "ruiner" Rauner our Repug Governor.

government failed that there would be some kind of revolution.

Well, that's not going to be the case. When American government fails it will be nothing but a friendly takeover.

Corporate will assume the running of trains and dissemination of social benefits -- because they got the cheddar. They're the only ones with money AND hired political hands to grease the skids and prime the pump for the exercise of power.
