Anybody from the Asheville area?

Got one of my own (BernieBro progressive) moving down to Asheville from up here in New Yawk (Albany area) (originally from Connecticut), and could use help with orientation. Email contact is great if a Pub is not your thing. Ray is 55-ish, politically energetic, with your basic New England accent. Should fit right in!

I know, should be a comment, but wanted all to see it in the event someone here might be from Asheville. If there was a place in The South I would consider living Asheville would be it. A blue oasis in a sea of red. Thanks!

See Randallt and PM him; he posts a NC essay on weekends and lives very near and works in Asheville, a friend of OPOL's, too. He's a magician, fire eater and juggler and a good person. I met him along with our gg, several years ago at an Asheville event for Democrats. I live a couple of hours away; but my father went to elementary school there and i've a reasonable knowledge of the city; besides its mountain setting, it has a great art scene. I have a few other folks i could reach out to for your friend, if needed.

Randallt is very active in the community, so a good resource.

I'd happily give you my phone number if he'd like to talk, just PM me.

Good news, we can use all the good folks in NC we can get. It's a lovely small city, it 's a great choice in NC, imo.

Hope this helps.

@smiley7 I also thought about Randallt who is definitely a great source and a go to guy. I was afraid to recommend him without contacting him first.

@gulfgal98

you and i first met and he has invited folks to contact him on kos many times in his weekly series. I'm not aware of other c99ers in NC except NCTim.

Now you are here, are you off to Florida soon?

My friends from here who live in Florida have already returned for the winter, which is roaring in here Wednesday. But, as you know, could be convertible weather next week, we never know and this Fall was very strange climate wise, the leaves never turned up high, blown away by high winds from the hurricanes.

Normally, Fall is a dry season here with Carolina Blue skies.

Asheville is expensive now as is our areas, these mountains attract a lot of folks wanting a second home driving up prices. Pinehurst, my birthplace, is unbelievable now; a county that was solidly democratic when i grew up is staunch republican because as you write, they are wealthy folks who have moved in.

I've kept a presence on kos as in order to stay in touch with good friends an blast away on occasions.

I live a good portion of the year in Brevard which is a small town about 35 miles sw of Asheville. We rarely go to Asheville as it is the big city and we prefer small town living. So I cannot speak as someone who really knows Asheville except from a distance. This is what I do know.

Ashewille has a really neat and energetic downtown, but it is becoming very expensive to live in the downtown area. Craft brewing is very big in Asheville as is the art and music scene. New Belgium built a new brewery in Asheville recently. South of Asheville in Mills River is the spectacular Sierra Nevada Brewery. And further south in Brevard is Oscar Blues brewery. The downtown is known for its wide variety of restaurants and night life as well as artist studios, funky shops, and galleries.

Asheville is progressive in town, but much of the nearby expensive mountain developments are becoming increasingly conservative as rich out of town people buy up the mountain real estate. Many old timers look down on people who are destroying the mountains with their Mc Mansions.

Outdoor pursuits are huge in this area of NC. My county, to the south, is known as the mountain bike capital of the south. Hiking and other outdoor activities are big in this area.

I hope this helps a little.

Which as the joke goes.

"So you live in Asheville?"
"No hendersonville, it's about 15 down asheville highway."
"Oh so Asheville!"
".... Yes Asheville."

Granted I'm not very politically involved given my antipathy towards both parties at the moment, and the whole full time work to barely get by thing. By I can provided some help with the area itself if needed.

I'll PM contact info if you want.

See, their morals, their code... it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be.

The problem with Brevard is that our population is older, so we are not as "lively" at night as Asheville.

But we are home to art, music, and outdoor pursuits, particularly mountain biking and hiking. We are the Land of Waterfalls here.
