The civil war on the left in 2000 was between the DLC/NAFTA/Third Way and the economic progressives.
Bradley lost. There followed an election rife with "Lesser of Two Evils" and "ZOMG Supreme Court".
An election that shouldn't have been even close was lost by Gore/Lieberman & the DLC/Third Way crew.
Who are still here, with periodic rebranding, still screwing progressives for the 1%.
2016 the Democrat establishment are selecting another NAFTA/Third Way/Hawk over the economic progressives.
Already we are hearing "Lesser of Two Evils" and "ZOMG Supreme Court".
It didn't work in 2000, but something something it will work in 2016?

Follow the money
From the Wall St. perspective, it is about constraining the electoral options:
If you run a DLC-type and win the general election, neoliberalism wins.
If you run a DLC-type and lose in the general election to the Republican, neoliberalism still wins.
That is why in our day the primary election is where the real power is.
That's pretty much how I see it
And their motivational tool is fear. That's why I resist "Oooooh scary Republican" type arguments. Even though it's a real argument with meat on it's bones it's also a losing argument which, if accepted, makes me vote for a neoliberal.
A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.

Al Gore said the 2000 election was about "The People versus The Powerful." The slogan rang hollow, because Gore himself was about the farthest thing from a populist that you can imagine.
"We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
Lieberman is pure asshole.
Used to be that certain people knew that and would raise money to fight against him and people like him. Sigh...
