The Afghanistan Papers: We Were Lied To

This is not a bombshell report, but unlike what the WashPost usually does, this actually qualifies as journalism.

Confidential documents obtained by The Washington Post reveal that top US officials misled the American public about the war in Afghanistan in order to conceal doubts about the likelihood that the US could be successful in the nearly 20-year effort since its earliest days, the paper reported in a major investigation on Monday.

In comparing the new documents to the Pentagon Papers, the Post said that "throughout the Afghan war, documents show that U.S. military officials have resorted to an old tactic from Vietnam — manipulating public opinion."

After 18 years of war, you would have to be extremely naive and gullible to think that we were winning in Afghanistan. So I think the lies were meant more for internal consumption than for the public.
Nevertheless, some of the quotes are enlightening.

In one such case, the Post said Douglas Lute, "a three-star Army general who served as the White House's Afghan war czar" under former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, told interviewers "we were devoid of a fundamental understanding of Afghanistan -- we didn't know what we were doing."
"What are we trying to do here? We didn't have the foggiest notion of what we were undertaking," Lute said in 2015, according to the Post.
In another example, Jeffrey Eggers, a retired Navy SEAL and White House staffer for Bush and Obama, bemoaned the cost of the war to interviewers, asking, "What did we get for this $1 trillion effort? Was it worth $1 trillion?" the Post said.
"After the killing of Osama bin Laden, I said that Osama was probably laughing in his watery grave considering how much we have spent on Afghanistan," the former SEAL said, according to the paper.
One individual identified as a senior National Security Council official said, according to the paper, that "even when casualty counts and other figures looked bad ... the White House and Pentagon would spin them to the point of absurdity."

John Sopko, head of the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, said "the American people have constantly been lied to" since the war began.
The Five O'Clock Follies didn't work, and the Afghanistan lies didn't work either.

“Every data point was altered to present the best picture possible,” Bob Crowley, an Army colonel, told government interviewers, according to the Post. “Surveys, for instance, were totally unreliable but reinforced that everything we were doing was right and we became a self-licking ice cream cone.”

In a related note, SIGAR released a report on our War On some Drugs in Afghanistan just a few days ago.
Do I need to give you a hint what it says?

The counternarcotics effort there, for example, "has just been a total failure," John F. Sopko, special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction, said at the Wilson Center in Washington, DC, in November.

“We should recall that the Houthis proposed a cessation of missile and air attacks with Saudi Arabia just days after the Iranians struck Saudi oil installations on Sept. 14,” Hook told journalists at the State Department.

“The Houthis’ de-escalation proposal, which the Saudis are responding to, shows that Iran clearly does not speak for the Houthis, nor has the best interests of the Yemeni people at heart,” Hook said. “Iran is trying to prolong Yemen’s civil war to project power. Iran should follow the calls of its own people and end its involvement in Yemen.”

I can't believe the State Department is still pushing that lie about Iran. Who to? The entire Middle East already knew about the missile upgrades in Yemen well before they were fired at the Saudi target. Yemen held a festive event to show off their new, sophisticated missiles that they assembled with help from weapons designers in Lebanon and Iraq.

Is the lie for the clueless NATO Vassal States? For the Americans public? Why even bother? The US Empire doesn't need permission from the people to bomb Iran. The people whimpered a bit but went right along with the atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Empire lies for the narrative, only. So, they will say that Iran now has nuclear missiles that can reach the US. Then bomb. The Americans will be relieved to get it over with so they can feel secure, even if they can't afford adequate food or health care. Who cares if the Persians are anti-WMD peaceniks who haven't been the aggressor in any war in the past 400 years?

This time it's different. Why did you impose - why did you oppose impeachment in the past? And what is your obligation to protect our democracy from the actions of our President now?

I was Ranking Member on the Intelligence Committee even before I became part of the leadership of Gang of Four. So, I knew there were no nuclear weapons in Iraq. It just wasn't there.

They had to show us now - to show the Gang of Four all the Intelligence they had. The Intelligence did not show that that - that was the case. So, I knew it was a - a misrepresentation to the public. But having said that, it was a, in my view, not a ground for impeachment. That was - they won the election. They made a representation. And to this day, people think - people think that that it was the right thing to do.

If people think that Iraq had something to do with the 9/11, I mean it's as appalling what they did. But I did - and I've said, if somebody wants to make a case, you bring it forward.

Unbelievably the kids are defending Nancy for not doing that. Funny I remember the opposite when people were mad as hell that she wouldn't do anything to reign in his abuse of power and for lying us into a war that has destroyed the Middle East. As well as defending Biden for calling the guy a liar, fat and wanting to do a contest on pushups and IQ. It's not when they go low, we go high anymore. Oh no. It's okay to get down in the gutter with Trump because he lowered the bar. Every day is opposite day.

“Democracy Now” and the “Progressive” Alternative Media: Valued Cheerleaders For Imperialism and War

The major Western mainstream media outlets have been running a “shock and awe” propaganda offensive against the Syrian government of President Bashar Al Assad for nearly 16 months. The misinformation has been unrelenting, monolithic, unverified, one-sided and, frankly, increasingly preposterous.

But a closer look at what Goodman’s “Democracy Now” is reporting on Syria shows that the purported critical broadcaster has become a purveyor of Western government propaganda. While the mainstream media’s propaganda function is obvious to the informed public, Goodman’s “Democracy Now” plays a more subtle role. Camouflaged with the trappings of critical, independent journalism, “Democracy Now” serves to sow powerful seeds of misinformation in a way that the “compromised” mainstream media cannot.

This misinformation from “Democracy Now” is valuable to the ruling elite because to many of its readers it is not seen as misinformation.

Recall that the Libyan leader was lynched on a roadside by a NATO-directed mob, and sodomised with a knife before being shot dead. It may also be recalled that “Democracy Now” gave prominent broadcasts supporting NATO’s intervention in Libya and justifying the criminal subversion of that country. Perhaps half the news pushers, journalists, reporters, and TV news-talkers at any given time are CIA assets. CIA history reveals as much. It may have been more extensive in the 1950s and 60s, branching out into fiction and painting. I figured Amy Goodman was part of that. I always pegged The Intercept as Intelligence assets, too. Noam Chomsky and many like him I imagine are controlled opposition. Marcy is definitely an intelligence unit, but I don't think she knows she is being handled. It's hard to tell.

You're probably familiar with the history, below. I believe the intelligence-based, narrative-controlled web is much more interconnected and meshed now. Intelligence operatives have flooded television and politics, and there are direct connections to guiding councils that coordinate messages across media, government, and the internet very well, indeed. intense political-psychology is inserted at various points. That is pretty obvious in the impeachment hearings, where entire parts of reality and real events are completely erased. Mentioning them invites violent outrage and attacks, which I think is some kind of psychological programming. This is happening while there are newspaper and magazine records of the events that are erased from the narrative, so there is confidence that they can crush any attempt to mainstream it. Evidence will disappear soon enough and there will be nothing behind your bookmarks. You've probably noticed the meanings of words changing, or the abrupt word substitutions. This must also be the mechanism for that.

Newly-declassified documents show that a senior CIA agent and Deputy Director of the Directorate of Intelligence worked closely with the owners and journalists of many of the largest media outlets:

After 1953, the network was overseen by Allen W. Dulles, director of the CIA. By this time, Operation Mockingbird had a major influence over 25 newspapers and wire agencies. The usual methodology was placing reports developed from intelligence provided by the CIA to witting or unwitting reporters. Those reports would then be repeated or cited by the preceding reporters which in turn would then be cited throughout the media wire services.

The Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) was funded by siphoning off funds intended for the Marshall Plan [i.e. the rebuilding of Europe by the U.S. after WWII]. Some of this money was used to bribe journalists and publishers.

In 2008, the New York Times wrote:

During the early years of the cold war, [prominent writers and artists, from Arthur Schlesinger Jr. to Jackson Pollock] were supported, sometimes lavishly, always secretly, by the C.I.A. as part of its propaganda war against the Soviet Union. It was perhaps the most successful use of “soft power” in American history.

A CIA operative told Washington Post owner Philip Graham … in a conversation about the willingness of journalists to peddle CIA propaganda and cover stories:

Famed Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein wrote in 1977:

More than 400 American journalists … in the past twenty?five years have secretly carried out assignments for the Central Intelligence Agency, according to documents on file at CIA headquarters.

It just went underground.. as did many of their operations. Plus every msm is owned by someone in the defense industry. No wonder people tow the party line. It's either that or they don't get hired. Bush was low hanging fruit for Keith and Rachel so no big deal that they were against him. But their true colors showed after Obama became president. Stewart and Colbert too. Maybe I gave Amy too much benefit of doubt because she told me things I already agreed with? Sibel Edmonds wrote about the time Amy had a Syrian warlord on her show and she let him mislead her viewers. This is when I found out that she took the money.

The Intercept dude is also connected to George Soros of the color revolution infamy. They are currently having a fundraiser for the site. It's pocket change for Pierre to keep it running, but he wants the readers to pony up. Just unbelievable huh?

BTW. I posted a tweet yesterday about how 40% of the military are pro Russia. This came from VOA who I didn't know who they were. Doh. Voice of America the government's propaganda mouthpiece. Okay since Trump was elected we have been hit with more propaganda than in the past. Is this because Obama made it legal for the government to spread it? Or has it always been this bad?

The PSB has close ties to the State Department and Intelligence Organizations. The purpose of the PSB was to co-ordinate psycho-political operations. Many of those operations were focused at Americans.

Thanks for the link. So many secret groups running the government which means that it doesn't matter who we vote for since they will only be allowed to do what the real people running the show wants.

The Council on Foreign Relations was founded by a group of American and British imperialists and racists intent on ruling the world.

The Marshall plan and the Monroe doctrine dictated by these groups of sociopaths have brought so much misery and death to millions and there is no end in sight. I just hope that those people who were involved in it and have died are roasting in the 9th circle of hell! This article and Smedley Butler's book should be required reading for high school students and every person who thinks of joining the military. But then they wouldn't get their quotas of cannon fodder would they?

A single organization controls almost everything you see, hear, and read in the media and they’ve been handpicking your leaders for decades.

As she became more wealthy with funding from new donors she had a choice to make - go against her donors and lose them or make subtle changes in her reporting. It was a slippery slope and she lost her footing. It's not like she was an outlier. Many reporters fall prey to this.

Goodman is basically a ghoul at this point. Even in noncontroversial programs, her narrative will run through an embedded lie, strategically placed, that passes almost unnoticed. But not for me. I feel the full effect of the corrupt assumption it is meant to promote. I feel a shadow pass over whenever I hear her voice, now.

Amy has guests I like to listen to. What's wrong with that? I should not listen to Snowden, because I should not listen to Amy? If I would follow that path, I couldn't watch any news broadcasters and their hosts anymore.

I am at least two weeks behind to really read in full the EB articles and then I am behind to read the Weekly Watch collection of articles and then I should read all the goodies hidden in Wendy's or Magiamma's hot air lists of truthinesses... Gimme a break...

No one was held accountable, no one was punished. Why should the government, our politicians, stop lying when there is no accountability? Why do we let them go,over and over? Why do we throw lavish funerals for criminals after they live a long and rich life? Will the body of Henry Kissinger be dumped in a latrine somewhere to be remembered as he should?

Except for the leakers, the exposers, the Assanges and Mannings. Then there is "accountability".

We celebrate each time one of them buys the farm. But their fellow sociopathic friends love to get together to mourn their passings. Bush I's funeral was a great chance for all of his accomplices to be arrested and transported to The Hague. Shucks another missed opportunity. Oh well Kissinger can't live much longer can he? Albright is also getting up there. Carter will probably be the next one to shuffle off this mortal coil, but I think he has been trying to do penance for what he did in office.

As I said, he is guarding the poppy fields that the CIA will then bring over here and give it to people who we will then send to prison. Double the money on something that the Taliban had almost wiped out before we invaded and got them growing again. But I see nothing wrong with wondering if that was why if that guy joined the military and then started guarding the fields that will hurt many Americans. I have a problem with it. IF you don't that's fine.

understood what you wondered about. I was thinking about it during the day.

I heard of many things of why men and women enlist in the military. I never heard that some individual soldier enlists intentionally to 'guard the poppyfields in Afghanistan for the profit of the US political powerful, who want to ruin the US population by making them drug addicts and then send them into prison' (I am paraphrazing what you said). I found that assumption a bit over the top. May be that is not what you meant.

No individual soldier knows where he would be deployed to, nor in what conflicts and war situation the soldier would come during his contract with the military. And under the contract he has to do what his superior commander orders him to do, even if it's poppy field guarding.

So the underlying assumption or the wondering about that assumption amazed be a bit, because no matter what kind of political inclination the soldier might have, he can't know upfront the impact that the wars and conflicts he will experience will have on him/her/the US or the world.

At least I believe so. YMMV.
