Friday Night Photos Flower Power Edition

Happy Friday everyone. Welcome to Friday Night Photos your once a week escape from the day to day insanity of the world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music or whatever else you find of interest that helps tune out the madness.

I made my monthly pilgrimage to the Balboa Park rose garden with the macro lens last Tue. One of the nice things about a 105mm macro lens, not only is it great for macro photography, it also makes a great portrait lens. So when I didn't find very many bugs while looking up close, I stepped back a few feet and focused my attention on the roses.

I try to be mindful of the thorns, but every once in a while I get scratched or poked.
Sorry to hear about the passing of your friend.

I was a little confused on why you used it. Now I'm not confused.

What a beautiful portrait of your flower friend, and ray of sunshine. I'm sure it was nice to know her.

Your participation is always appreciated.

The flowers are all so fresh and glowing, and then there are the fading roses at the end. I find an equal pleasure in their fading state. Thank you, as always.

The Manuka flowering, one of the few flowering at this time ...

Cheers all

Unfortunately there were a lot of dead and fading roses in the garden. More than is normal for this time of year. A few years ago there was an infestation in the garden, and while steps were taken to mitigate it, the garden hasn't been the same since. A lot less bugs and the rose bushes don't look as healthy as they once did.
The blossoms on the Manuka look pretty. Any chance you have a close-up of one we can see?

I will take a close up soon or tomorrow of the very small, but fragrant Manuka flower. This one, of the prostrate variety, we planted 28 years ago. Several more were planted on the landslip more recently. The prostrate variety are beautiful, and seem to hold the soil somewhat more strongly than the more common spindly tall growing ones.

of this site, got your image clear.

It must be challenging to live in the
winter tropics without rain every day?
Glad your plants are keeping the hills
from sliding-out beneath you.
Hang-in there!

In reality they flower for the insects to enjoy, especially bees. It's where Manuka honey comes from. They flower at several times during the year. At the moment they're just displaying their beauty, as bees are few. It's winter time here in this subtropical climate.

Very pretty. The look like they would attract a lot of bees.

SP- Your photos of flowers are outstanding. I especially like the counterpoint, or contrast of the last.

I made reference to a mythic nostalgia flower recently in the lyrics to a song Rainy Gomoryeong:

How many years was it, I picked the amaranth blooming
Behind the water mill, enraptured?
Why can't I forget the budding wild rose?*
When will the falling rain cross Gomo pass?

This led me to try to find more on the legendary Manghyangcho 망향초 望鄕草 nostalgia flower. I couldn't find a specific traditional textual reference from a simple search online. But the search returned a sijo (Korean poem) unattributed to an author published in a Joongang Journal from 1981. Probably submitted by a sijo enthusiast.

All summer long, I've been tending to a single flower,
and now it's blooming quietly as soon as fall comes.

The flower I've been tending to in my hometown is blooming now.
What's the point of a flower blooming when its time comes?

When the flower I've been cherishing blooms in front of the garden,
my mother's delicate eyes will be wet with dew once again. [출처:중앙일보] https://www.joongang.co.kr/article/1578529

This representation of separation from loved ones or the place where one spent their youth and the longing for spring again, is often presented in classical Chinese poetry foremost in the wonderful imagery of flowers.
