419-1

democracya_1.jpg

419-1. That was the vote tally in Congress last Thursday to pass the "Korean Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act" on to the Senate, which will no doubt nearly unanimously do the same. The only politician to vote no was a very conservative republican. Gabbard, all the current democratic party idols, voted yay for a clearly illegal and imperialist bill.

Who is saying the Congress is divided and unable to agree on anything? Who is saying the democratic party is obstructionist? Not when it comes to U.S. imperialism and war it isn't. Why isn't that mentioned, ever?

The Russians aren't happy about this one.

"On May 4, the US House of Representatives passed a bill which slapped more sanctions on North Korea and gave the Trump administration the go-ahead to take control over Russian, Iranian, Syrian and Chinese ports in order to ensure that no forbidden cargo reaches Pyongyang.

Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the Russian Upper House's International Affairs Committee, told Sputnik that the US House of Representatives bill on establishing control over ports in the Russian Far East envisions a show of force and thus amounts to a declaration of war.

"This bill, I hope, will never be implemented because its implementation envisions a scenario of power with forced inspections of all vessels by US warships. Such a power scenario is beyond comprehension, because it means a declaration of war," Kosachev said."

https://sputniknews.com/world/201705061053333749-russia-united-states-bi...

I haven't seen a Chinese response but I'm sure they feel the same. This is a move by the wannabe global empire to draw a line and see if anyone will cross it and to prepare for future actions. It's not like the psychos in charge are really going to take over Russian and Chinese ports or ships to enforce these imperialist sanctions against North Korea. Not yet anyway.

"Alexey Pushkov, a member of the Russian Upper House, who specifically drew attention to the fact that the bill' final vote was 419 to 1, something that Pushkov said "indicates the nature of the legal and political culture of the US Congress."

"It is absolutely unclear how the bill will be implemented. To control Russian ports, the US will have to introduce a blockade and inspect all ships, which amounts to an act of war," he pointed out.

He shared Kosachev's view that Washington is trying to extend its legislation to other countries."

He's right, the 419-1 vote "indicates the nature of the legal and political culture of the US Congress." It shows how completely captured our government is by the "ruling elite". This is the United States government, representing the United States ruling class, trying to set the global rules. So the rich can become more rich, the corporations can become more powerful and the United States can rule the world. That's what it's all about Those that think it's for our safety are fucking nuts. Those that think it's about democracy are even more nuts.

"Clearly this is a preparation for some sort of statement to be made against Russia, Syria or China. This measure is unlikely to be related to real politics, because the US doesn't have any jurisdiction over other countries. But this is an obvious foundation for some propaganda campaign," Grigoryev concluded."

419-1. Frankly, I'm sick of the talk about reforming the Democratic party, about purging the corporate dems, about how Bernie Sanders was robbed, and how electoral politics is the answer to our problems. This vote proves what our Congress and Senate is about, and that it cannot be reformed. It has been completely captured by the oligarchy that rules us. It proves that trying to elect more and better politicians is a fucking futile and foolishly "pragmatic" path to progress. It's like what, in eight years you might be able to cause a vote to be 415 to 5?

When absolutely none, zero, nada, of our entire Congress had the courage or even knowledge level necessary to vote no on this bill shows how FUBAR our political system is. The bill itself shows how crazy and brazen our ruling class has become. They literally think they can do anything and no one will stop them.

Here's the pertinent text and the link to the bill:

“(b) Specific findings.—Each report required under subsection (a) shall include specific findings with respect to the following ports and airports:
“(1) The ports of Dandong, Dalian, and any other port in the People’s Republic of China that the President deems appropriate.
“(2) The ports of Abadan, Bandar-e-Abbas, Chabahar, Bandar-e-Khomeini, Bushehr Port, Asaluyeh Port, Kish, Kharg Island, Bandar-e-Lenge, and Khorramshahr, and Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport, in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“(3) The ports of Nakhodka, Vanino, and Vladivostok, in the Russian Federation.
“(4) The ports of Latakia, Banias, and Tartous, and Damascus International Airport, in the Syrian Arab Republic."

We just had the 200th anniversary of that little fracas, and we learned absolutely nothing from it. Stopping and bossing and bullying other nations' ships leads to only one thing: war. And the bullies don't always win. (Strictly speaking the war of 1812 was a draw - Britain got tired of wasting money and men and ships and supplies that could be put to better use against a much scarier enemy much closer at hand (i.e. Napoleon). So they cut their losses and declared a peace.)

Congress will be ready to declare war. That's goodbye to all of you.

We justify our naval presence in international waters by claiming that we are protecting freedom of navigation in international waters. And then we pass an outrageous, illegal bill to restrict passage of ships from some countries in open waters. WTF?

Any of the mentioned countries would be perfectly within their rights to sink a US warship that interfered with passage of cargo ships flagged in those countries.

Can congress critters read a map? Russia and China share a border with North Korea. Vladivostok is 3 hours and 45 minutes from the border with NK by car.

It's less than an hour by air from Vladivostok to any airport in Northern NK. Are we going to try to enforce a no fly zone over a part of Russia?

Is the US planning on bombing roads and bridges in Russia's Far East?

We are talking acts of war against a well armed nuclear power. Russia will respond to any provocation, as so will China.

I think that the Doomsday Clock has moved to one second to midnight with this insane vote by Congress.

My preteen nuclear education came via an older sibling, like everything. Trailed along to Drake High School in Fairfax, California to see Dr. Helen Caldicott give a talk and show a film on the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings. Physicians for Social Responsibility was a thing I gave money to for a long time, when I could do such things. Never could unsee all what I saw that evening, it had quite an impact. She has devoted her life and career to stopping the nuclear madness. Thanks

During the talk, she had to pause for an ambulance because a guy in the audience literally had a heart attack while she was speaking. He survived fine, but that was the first time I ever saw someone turn sheet white, it left an impact. Then, omg the film was not PG, it was horrific. I was around ten or eleven years age at the time, barely surviving the Vietnam insanity, and then I got to imagine SF disappearing in the blink of any eye, blast radius, radiation sickness, skin falling off in gobs, the detailed medical effects on the children of Japan.

Every time North Korea lights off one of those ginormous missiles, I remember that film. I don't blame North Korea, actually. I see a lot of hungry people where I live, in the heart of wine-grape and cannabis wealth inequality. Buzz crops should not be subsidized like food crops, that's what I think. "Lead with our values"? Well why not set an example or two? Never mind. A unanimous vote would have been funny though, 420! Biggrin

@eyo Yeah, one thing I don't understand right now is how so many people over 40 can support Hillary Clinton when she said shit like this, in public, on the campaign trail. Start at 4:32. This is where she says the United States will treat cyberattacks like a military attack and respond accordingly. It's also the same speech where she says her first act as President will be to upgrade our nuclear arsenal so that said arsenal "will be prepared for any threats we might receive."

How the fuck could anybody who lived through the Cold War possibly support this insanity? Even the Reagan Cold Warriors didn't support crazy shit like this.

I had nightmares about nuclear war when I was a teenager. I couldn't believe it when the Cold War ended without us all killing each other--I was delighted.

So now they're bringing it all back to save the petrodollar? And people over 40 are OK with this?

TRIPOLI (AP) - A spokesman for Libya's military says gunmen tried to kill the head of the army in a bold daylight attack in the country's capital.
Infantry spokesman Sgt. Abdel-Razik el-Shibahy says the army chief of staff was in a convoy Saturday traveling from his home in Tripoli to the military headquarters when a group of armed men at a fake checkpoint tried to stop them.

Note, however, that a significant number of the libertarian right Republicans are not at all happy with US military policy in Syria and other places. In general most Democrats and Republicans are imperialists, but a few believe that military defense should be defense not ill-conceived intervention. "I'm sick of the talk about reforming the Democratic Party"--yeah, me too. After thirty years.

"about purging the corporate dems"--ditto, given that there's no sensible plan for doing so

"about how electoral politics is the answer to our problems"--again, right

"about how Bernie Sanders was robbed"--actually, I think there needs to be more emphasis on this, not less. If you look carefully at HOW "Bernie Sanders was robbed," it makes the limits of electoral strategy completely obvious; it's just that nobody wants to accept it. This is what makes Debbie (the Sane Progressive) post 2-hour rants; the facts about electoral politics are right out where we can see them. It's not like the establishment could have been any more blatant about what they did last year, unless they literally put armed guards at the polling places and refused to let anybody in who didn't declare for Hillary. Or unless they filmed hackers installing vote-flipping software in real time and broadcast it on all channels.

Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal's picture

@Big Al OK, let me put it another way.

Bernie is not the only person who was robbed, and while he may or may not be OK with it, millions of the rest of us are not. I am not interested in letting this particular violation go down the memory hole along with the Bushes' 2000 election fraud, which Democrats have now turned into "Bad Nader No Dog Biscuit," and which the left wing has turned into a "Shrug. What can you do?"

Shrugging at violations like that leads pretty quickly into the Boss Man's wheelhouse. We're supposed to shrug off everything horrible He does, and say "What can you do?" We're supposed to forget violations because it's pointless to remember them.

Doing so basically reinscribes the Boss Man's dominance permanently; when we do that, we are giving over our minds to him as well as our bodies, bank accounts, and lives, all of which he already has.

And as for this:
Plus, everybody knows the system is rigged, they cheat and have forever, we already have all the proof we need.

I don't think everybody exactly knows this. At least, they seem to need to be constantly reminded, and they sure don't integrate their understanding of the rigging into anything they plan to do. In other words, if they know elections are fraudulent, why the hell do they keep going back to play the rigged game? I've been noticing this since 2004. I'll never forget, on a MoveOn phone call, Michael Moore talking to Eli Pariser or somebody, and Eli saying "Sounds like all we have to do is get out the vote!" and Moore agreeing, and I, even in those idealistic days, shaking my head--because the idea that all the strategy you need is getting out enough votes to "overwhelm" the fraud is nonsensical in days when computers can flip every 5th or 10th or 20th vote easily.

You might ask why I bothered to support Bernie last time, given my opinions on this.

I had two reasons for voting for Bernie last time: first, I thought he was making an honest gesture--trying, in good faith, to improve the system in a direction I agreed with. Whether I thought his gesture would be successful or not, I didn't feel I could leave an honest man hanging. At this point, he's definitely no longer an honest man, and I'm unlikely to be moved in the same way again, by him or anybody else. They basically just got the last of my good faith and my basic humanity. I'm not going to come out and do the same thing for Tulsi, or Nina, or whoever they put up next time, if anybody. Anyway, DHS is now running our elections, so it's obviously fruitless to have an electoral strategy unless you know somebody who can outhack the Department of Homeland Security--and if you do, you shouldn't post it on the public airwaves!

Second, and more importantly, I voted for (and supported) Bernie because I believed that an independent movement would arise from his campaign. That was my main goal, especially once I saw how ready the people were for his message--more ready than Sanders was, for sure. There were plenty of data indicating that an independent people's movement could happen. I am beyond disappointed that, not only did people not take that initiative, but worse, actively embraced almost every bit of propaganda the establishment put out to fracture us (including, of course, Bernie Sanders and the politically bankrupt non-profit organizations associated with him: Brand New Congress, Our Revolution, and even, at a slightly greater remove, Justice Democrats). In October, we looked like we were ready to mount an actual challenge to the system; by December, everyone was rushing out to protest Trump, filling their role in the establishment's scripts as perfectly as if they actually had a director pointing out the marks on the floor where they should stand. I basically watched both street protest and electoral politics get completely co-opted and turned into puppet shows. That left people like me in the position of having to be the bad guy, the meanie who tells people their wonderful inspiring protest is a sham. Nobody listens to Negative Nancy, especially when she doesn't have a pre-made, surefire replacement plan for defeating the establishment in her back pocket all ready to go (just add water).

I'd say last year's reaching toward resistance--which is what tens of millions of people were doing--has collapsed in pretty much the worst way possible--far worse than I ever expected. I've actually never seen the left, what's left of it, behave like this: half of us embracing something very much like McCarthyism and a version of Reagan's Cold War rhetoric on steroids, while others talk about punching neo-Nazi media figures like that's going to accomplish something.

A few months ago thousands of us were protesting at CNN. While I'm unsure of the effectiveness of street protest in these days (at least in the traditional sense of standing around waving signs and then going home), that was encouraging because it was the first time I saw people challenge the media itself as a large part of the problem, rather than just bitching about it and then going on as if the media were Walter Cronkite, and being surprised again every time they acted like shits. I thought we were starting to get somewhere. Let's get real: we, the people on the bottom, were responsible for everything good about the Sanders campaign other than that one speech and Sanders' willingness to keep giving it, over and over, despite being ignored, ridiculed, etc. Well, also, his willingness to hold his ground and fight back when engaging with the press (once they started admitting he existed). Other than those two things, there was little the campaign-from-above did that was valuable. Everything else good came from below. I didn't see why we couldn't continue that. If we could raise that much money, take all those actions, etc., with a U.S. Senator standing there, why couldn't we do it without him standing there?

But apparently we can't.

in order to effectively mobilize large numbers of people to a revolutionary cause. Think Mandela, Mao, Castro, Hitler, M.L.King, Malcolm X, Napoleon, Ghandi, any number of others. For a while at least, Bernie Sanders came close to assuming such an exemplary role, or persona -- at least in the minds of his most devoted supporters.

Human beings are not prone to spontaneously organize themselves, without morally strong, clearly defined, exemplary leadership. It's a question of achieving a common focus -- the most effective way to get everyone working together toward the same purpose, is to have that purpose embodied in a Leader who clearly represents a singular, widely shared ideal in his or her person.

@native @native Yes, human beings are prone to needing leaders in order to organize. That's why anti-revolutionary and anti-reform forces have assembled a perfect suite of techniques for destroying movements by destroying their leader. Cut the head off, and the body dies.

In this time and place, it's done mainly not through assassination but through character assassination. Or bribery/threats/co-optation.

If your organization or movement depends on one person, your organization or movement will be taken down or taken over and repurposed by the establishment. That's all.

That's why the media and politicos were so freaked out over Occupy not having a leader.

I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.

@The Voice In the Wilderness thanks for clearing that up, and sorry if I hurt your feelings with a sarcastic reply to your political analysis.

@The Voice In the Wilderness I think this bill happened because of the long standing use of North Korea as an enemy of the U.S. for imperialist geopolitical power purposes particularly related to China and North Korea has every right to tell the U.S. to fuck off and die after what the U.S. has done to that country and people.
Not to excuse the crazy little fucker and their bullshit system in North Korea. The U.S. could crush that county in an instant if it wanted so it is no danger, and this bill was about much more than North Korea and is clearly illegal so any politician that voted for it is a potential war criminal in my book.

@The Voice In the Wilderness I have no patience for a politician who can't reframe a debate. What are they good for if they can't even manage marketing?

"Do you, Congressman X, actually favor North Korea with their horrible horrendous dictator? Do you actually want to go soft on this Communist menace?"

"No, Congressman Y, I favor foreign policy that doesn't get us into World War III against two nuclear-armed superpowers. I favor my children, and their children, surviving."

There, sorted.

As part of a double bill with "Night and Fog" - I'm sure you know that one, according to Ronald Reagan he starred in it. I've always thought that those movies should be required viewing in every American high school.
BTW, I also think that they have been unofficially banned from high schools once TPTB discovered the impact they made when shown.

Hillary also said that "Iran is not complying with the treaty" (this directly contradicted what Obama said like the day before) "I will destroy (the Iranian) facility, and if nuclear weapons are necessary… that's not off the table". She then said, "a military response to Russian and Chinese hacking".

419-1. That was the vote tally in Congress last Thursday to pass the "Korean Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act" on to the Senate

On May 4, the US House of Representatives passed a bill which slapped more sanctions on North Korea and gave the Trump administration the go-ahead to take control over Russian, Iranian, Syrian and Chinese ports in order to ensure that no forbidden cargo reaches Pyongyang.
Such a power scenario is beyond comprehension, because it means a declaration of war," Kosachev said.

This is the United States government, representing the United States ruling class, trying to set the global rules. So the rich can become more rich, the corporations can become more powerful and the United States can rule the world.

Congressman, this act is clearly a violation of international, threatening blockade of neutral water ports of countries with which we are not at war. Several of these are nuclear powers. Attempting to stop and search vessels of nations not at war with us will clearly invite war.

Contemplate your reaction if a Russian submarine was stationed at the San Francisco bay, the Port of Los Angeles and the San Diego port. Think about this—really think about it. You with almost all of your colleagues have voted to place us in the greatest jeopardy for questionable goals at best. These actions will NOT benefit domestic welfare one bit.

Who do you think will survive a nuclear “exchange—it won’t be you or your donors.

Can congress critters read a map? Russia and China share a border with North Korea.

These two countries on NK border seem to me to be the exact reason for all this brouhaha against NK. The goal seems to be "call their bluff, or end it all." Crazy, but we have allowed it through our short history.

I've read the entire bill twice now and I don't see anything in it relating to taking control of other nations ports. The enhanced inspections only apply to ships whose destinations are the U.S., or ports under U.S. jurisdiction. I'm not a lawyer and this was not fun to read so I may very well be missing something, but I don't see a problem with it. I sure won't condemn my new hero Tulsi for voting for it. In the unlikely event that N.K. smuggles a nuke into a U.S. port anyone who voted against this bill would shoulder all of the blame. I don't think this only applies to North Korea either. If the Iraqi ports are under U.S. jurisdiction then Trump can impose more sanctions on Syria when ISIS starts shipping the weapons we gave them to Iraq to kill Americans. They are losing in Syria and I'm sure they don't want to leave all of their top of the line U.S. weapons behind. But like I said, maybe I'm missing something.

@uncomfortably numb thanks, I'm glad I read to the end. It's cool how conversations around here don't "expire" or whatever that's called. Your comment inspired me to look up here:H. Rept. 115-98 - KOREAN INTERDICTION AND MODERNIZATION OF SANCTIONS ACT
Yeah, I'm not a lawyer. I can't even make it through ten pages of legal blathering before my brain starts tuning out, like:

SEC. 101. MODIFICATION AND EXPANSION OF REQUIREMENTS FOR THE
DESIGNATION OF PERSONS.

(a) Expansion of Mandatory Designations.--Section 104(a) of the North
Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016 (22 U.S.C. 9214(a))

any defense article or defense service (as such terms are
defined in section 47 of the Arms Export Control Act (22 U.S.C.

(2) by redesignating paragraph (10) as paragraph (15);
(3) by inserting after paragraph (9) the following new
paragraphs:

``(11) knowingly, directly or indirectly, sells or transfers
to North Korea any significant amounts of rocket, aviation, or
jet fuel (except for use by a civilian passenger aircraft

flight to North Korea or its return flight);
``(12) knowingly, directly or indirectly, provides fuel,

(4) in paragraph (15), as so redesignated, by striking
``(9)'' and inserting ``(14)''.

Sure looks like more than port inspections, I think. Thanks.
