Mother Jones endorses Coolidge for President: 1924

On May 13, 1846 the United States Congress passed An Act providing for the Prosecution of the existing War between the United States and the Republic of Mexico (wiki)

Whereas, by the act of the Republic of Mexico, a state of war exists between that Government and the United States: ...

-

On 25 April 1898, the United States Congress declared war upon Spain.

The US had, by various means including ultimatums regarding Cuba provoked Spain into declaring war on the US on April 21. Accordingly, the US declaration of war on Spain was, in part, as follows:

A bill declaring that war exists between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Spain.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, First. That war be, and the same is hereby, declared to exist, and has existed since the twenty-first day of April, A.D. 1898, including said day, between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Spain.

-

On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked a special joint session of the United States Congress for a declaration of war against the German Empire. Congress responded with the declaration on April 6. (wiki)

WHEREAS, The Imperial German Government has committed repeated acts of war against the people of the United States of America; therefore, be it resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the state of war between the United States and the Imperial German Government, which has thus been thrust upon the United States, is hereby formally declared; and that the President be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to employ the entire naval and military forces of the United States and the resources of the Government to carry on war against the Imperial German Government; and to bring the conflict to a successful termination all the resources of the country are hereby pledged by the Congress of the United States.

-

On December 8, 1941, the United States Congress declared war on Japan:

JOINT RESOLUTION Declaring that a state of war exists between the Imperial Government of Japan and the Government and the people of the United States and making provisions to prosecute the same.

Whereas the Imperial Government of Japan has committed unprovoked acts of war against the Government and the people of the United States of America:

Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the state of war between the United States and the Imperial Government of Japan which has thus been thrust upon the United States is hereby formally declared; ...

-

Notice anything? Even though the US was the clear aggressor in at least two of these wars, it invariably portrayed itself as victim and cast its declarations of war as merely recognizing and formalizing the pre-existing state of was caused by the other state's actions. This is the way it always has been with the US' elites.

-

Similarly, innumerable statements and proposals from members of the working classes and the left have been and still are, with sadly predictable regularity, declared to constitute, initiate or suggest starting a class war. Hogwash, we are in one and have been, in this location, since the first Europeans arrived on these shores to steal its land and resources. In Europe, of course, it predates even that era. There is an ongoing class war. They started it, they continue it, and they are and have been winning all along. We need to recognize that fact and act on it.

-

Recognition:

Whereas the elites, the wealthy and the powerful, have for centuries committed innumerable unprovoked acts of war upon the working and laboring classes, the unemployed, and the poor, and continue to do so; we, the hoi polloi, hereby do recognize and declare that a state of war exists between the so-called upper and lower classes.

-

OK, that's it. Done. Over. Of course, you needn't sign on to it, I certainly don't expect any slumlords or bank owners, for example, to do so, but there it is, it's out there. So, how about we now get over it. How about we now begin to finally fight back.

The collapse of oil prices is an opportunity for a public takeover of the fossil fuel industry and replace it with sustainable energy. As the depression deepens, it is also the time for large publicly owned banks to weaken the economic and political power of finance. gas industry is probably wishful thinking, but it is a wonderful idea. We could, of course, buy up a bunch of the small fry and marginal/failing producers and producing interest holders, but most of those are in hock to the banks up to their eyeballs for much more than their current market price, so the banks will be scooping them up in bankruptcy hearings unless we can buy all of that debt from the banks. Once that is done there are still all of those reserves owned by nation-states and even operating companies owned in full or in part by nation-states.

I loved that honest government ad, and all of the previous ones that I hav seen. They have a site full of them that could provide a ton of entertainment, if one had the time, by just watching a few per day. Glad you posted it here too, for all thoe who missed it.

@enhydra lutris

Why not assume ownership with our created dollars...

Even Forbes is saying we should at least get gas credits.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/georgeschultze/2020/05/06/instead-of-bailin...

Why not take it one step more and like Norway nationalize them. Then we could control supply and move away from the fossil toward green energy.

The Fed should not be in the business of bailing out companies that were in terminal decline and suffering largely from their own misadventures well before the coronavirus pandemic. The fracking industry is notoriously overleveraged, and fracking gas is not even profitable.

https://www.commondreams.org/newswire/2020/04/30/federal-reserve-should-...

So the US citizen is investing lots of money in the never seen a profit fracking mistake.

Not saying that it WILL happen, just that it should. We buy the ticket but can't see the show. I though Max and Stacy nail the life cycle of the petrodollar in the 1st 15 min of this clip...

The way they are creating money to prop up the system - banks, corps, etc - they can never make the argument that we can't afford M4A or Debt relief, or nationalization of resources.

Too bad the MSM isn't telling people how bad they have been screwed... their message is shut up and get back to work.

@Lookout Why don't we have smart informative things like that? Yay Australia!

As I see it, the wealthy only see us as either consumer or labor. One to provide the least amount of value for the most profit, and the other to exploit, both with little government interference unless it benefits the wealthy in restricting us.

The biggest problem is that's the way we see ourselves. We drink the koolaid. It was in our baby bottles. We believe! If like in some time travel novel, we just did one thing, turned left instead of right we'd be better off. Bought Apple stock, studied medicine, gone to Harvard!! Instead we get to beat ourselves up for being lazy, foolish, stupid. We're just the abused identifying with our abusers.

If dems had any smarts they'd be down at the rifle range, if only to show they too could be formidable if it came to that. That they wouldn't go down without a fight. We know what side the police will be on, what side the yahoos will be on.

Who do they think will protect them? Our abusers?

insightful comment, though I disagree some with that last paragraph. The dems, the corporate dems and those organized dems that follow and support them are among our abusers. The corporatist elites heavily infest both parties, and the die hard true believers, those deep into kool aid addiction, aid and abet them. Neither party is really on our side. That, at any rate, is my opinion.

@enhydra lutris The last paragraph is disturbing because when guns are the subject there are two things that come to people minds. For some it's imminent violence, for others it's power. There are many things that can injure or cause death, but firearms are weapons, designed to kill.

The left has ceded this to the right. Having disarmed ourselves we are no threat. We are in a class war and so far it's been asymmetric warfare. Armed right wing Yahoos can push into the Michigan Capitiol and be listened to as freedom loving second amendment citizens demanding their rights. The police seem comfortable with no fear of imminent violence.

We need to change the dialogue. In a country awash in guns I imagine it's reassuring that your side has all the guns. Why not left wing freedom loving second amendment citizens demanding their rights? better yet, how about armed left wing counter demonstrators and the police in the middle? how comfortable would that be? I just can't see any other legal statement that would make the 1% worry.

Vote blue, no matter who. Strongly worded letters to the editor? If there is something else I can't think of it.

of betrayal due to a con artist's contract at the same time. Realizing both gives you such a shock and and anger, that you can't help but to "unbelieve, to unlearn, unprogram, unbrainwash" to get a handle on what you went through. (you mmeant in general and directed to anyone specific).

I am digging through old documents I found or were given to me by my extended family members (all in their early seventies), in which they had found about what their friends, parents and others have written about - after wwII was over - and they started to reflect what had happened to them.

The most eye-opening of those documents (post wwI and wwII personal war diaries) to me was to realize what they didn't write about and almost never talked about. It took for us post-war children a lucky moment when we could catch a sentence that revealed with a minuscule amount of words what they really felt.

There seems always to be the issue of being deeply and maliciously betrayed, death, illness, captivity, hunger and camaraderie among the victims.

So, do you see some wars in the making?

@smiley7 @el and smiley
were far away from the American Zeitgeist of the sixties and seventies and had close to no knowledge about the US cultural and historical development over the decades preceeding. But the inner moral compass (always stronger if you deal with other cultures' and nations' evilness, neglecting your own cultural and evilness in the past and present) brought many to the streets in protest in Germany too.

We marched against the Vietnam war in Berlin (Germany) and mourned for the deaths of MLK, Robert and JFK as well, but with less direct personal exposure to the events than you had in the US. Malcom X words were inhaled and felt to be honest.

I am now 72 years old and my little dream was to have a little tiny bookstore, when I found myself lost in the big United States looking for making myself a tiny home for myself to survive. So, I bought a lot of books and consoled my daily life struggles with the thought that one day when I have more time (thought of my retirement age) I would read them all. Malcom's book is still there, Mao Tse Tung's and Engels as well. Churchill's and Trumans memoirs and Gulag and Paperclipp etc. all there.

Well, I have them in my shelves, and want to read them, but frigging C99p distracts me every day from doing so and caring for a difficult into dementia gliding family member, while gliding myself into that area myself, gives me the rest.

I will be stubborn and read them all and won't care anymore for others, but for me, the egoist is coming out one day full force. Damnit.

But did the protests and marches in the sixties changed anything? I think the honest answer to ourselves (not admitted mostly) is that they didn't change anything politically or socially. And all that's left is some bitter sadness and all we can do is to deal with our own inner desperation over our sadness and helplessness.

Well, stubborness is the things that makes us not give up to listen to our own inner moral compass and conscience. We know what is good and what is evil and we want to fight for the good, but without risking our livelihood. Who are we to judge people wanting to live? What good are dead martyrs and heroes? I take a living brave courageeous activist over a dead one any day.

I was in between 16 to 19 years old in the mid sixties and we had learned nothing much in school about European colonialism, American style capitalistic exploitation and the Southern US style slavery or anything about the differences between the Northern parts and the Southern parts of the US and how and who had done what among the different US presidents.

That was not purposeful evilness of our German school teachers, it was just not enough time to cover everything in 2 hours a week hiostory classes to a bunch of 16 years old, who were more interested in the boys two aisles ahead of them in the classroom than in boring history lessons' talk. Like my mother (born 1919) said to my sister's (born 1942) question in the fifies or early sixties about what they (my mother and father, being teenagers in the third Reich) thought of Hitler and Nazi Germany). My mother said: 'Ack, what do you want to know, we were in love with each other, we didn't think much of anything else'. And that was it.

Is that revealing or not? In my family there were business men and public servants during the Third Reich, two Nazi and Hitler supporting folks, one officer in the Wehrmacht, two forced labor youngsters, three forced men to fight in the war. Real Nazis were two, all of them were racist to a degree as became clear 30 years later. None of them would admit or agree to the fact they were racist. Most of them are not aware of their own feelings being racist.

So, now what? How you blame a person who is not aware of their own feelings?

We were not aware of all the sufferings the Americans went through during wwII to fight the German Nazi-style genodice and aggressive wars for power-grabbing purposes only.

Our parents just saw the grandiose efforts of the Americans to help get food and coal for heating to the West-Berlin population after wwII (I mean all my family members in Berlin including the office building they had their company in founded by my great-great grandfather were bombed and kaputt, so it was really cold in the rubble and drafty in half destroyed structures). My mother, aunt and uncle also learned about the humanity of American soldiers in Bavarian camps in the war. They gave their basement huddled German refugee women and kids food and helped them. I had one uncle on the father side, who worked with the Americans and helped my mother with her baby and toddler kids cotoross the river 'Elbe'. Never forgotten in gratitude. On the same token a Russian officer prevented a Russian soldier from trying to rape my mother and other hiding women on a farm, probably as sign of gratitude that my mother took care of the Russian officer's wounds. Who knows. If the shit hits the fan, some people remember they are human.

My family didn't take the anti-communist and anti-socialist progaganda of the Americans too serious.

The sufferings of people in the wars sink into your real consciousness only, if the victims, who suffered, were loved ones close to you in your neighborhoods, families and friends. Sufferings you hear about of people you don't kmow well, and only read about in books, have not the same effect on your understanding the war situation, They don't really sink in.

We have similar situations today. The 'war against the virus' is used by political figures for political power grabs. Some even try to excuse their own nazi-style racist genocidal inner urges. We have a revival of racial or religious hatred and violence all over Europe.

So what has changed?

My father makes a good example. He lost his arm through an US bombardment over in Rumania and got to know about the Russian soul in POW Siberian camps (and ended up to respect both sides, American and Russians) ... ack, I think I will put this into another comment, I am just too tired. I have to dig out some dates and photos. See you later, Good Morning from Germany. It is 10 am in the morning here on Thursday the 7th of May.

PS: Just got a pop-up notification that our Robert Koch Institute in Berlin says the number of infections with covid-19 have increased. Yesterday Merkel and the MP of our 'Länder (ie German states within Germany) discussed how much relaxation of the lockdown for the population could be 'the right amount of freedoms in each of the states, because the infection rate was going down somewhat nicely". Great, hallelujah... hmm, it was Merkur.de who pushed the messago on to my laptop. I have still not understood what kind of news outlet Merkur.de is. I hate it, when I can't figure out who is what and what is 'true or wrong'. Now our great press people criticize the RKI for what they say. ... tralala.

Should I dump my laptop and cell phone in the trash can? It is giving me nothing but headaches. I don't want to be a masochist. Fuck the internet.

Nevertheless, the c99p-ers are the most lovable useful idiots. As I told joe shikspack yesterday ...

Good topic, has been heavy on my mind as of late.
No real solutions here, but the need to recognize the beast
as it is may help. Most people of limited means already feel
the big vacuum (greedy wealth extractors) sucking down their
shelters.

Middle class has begun to detect cracks in previously secure
havens, especially now that incomes are shut down.
And the great equalizer, the gubmit', is proving to be ineffective.

Fed is confused and won't help states. States are broke and can't
afford helping communities. The wealthy care not to sacrifice their
gains to spread out the stress.

Systemic failure writ large. It's about time.

Brains a bit foggy this morning so I don't have anything clever to say about your theme except that I am reminded of a saying about how they only call it class warfare when we fight back. I guess the poor in this country should be happy that their poverty includes indoor plumbing, eh? An argument I'm sure that the elite would say demonstrates a rising tide lifts all boats, or some such freaking nonsense.

Gave myself a beauty treatment last night where I covered my hands in a deep moisturizer and put a pair of gloves on before I went to bed. What with all the washing and sanitizing, my hands are not only very dry, but beginning to turn red as well. Woke up this morning and I'm happy to say deep moisturizing did wonders. Not sure if this is related but I had a dream about washing dishes in my neighbors house during a snow storm, which is odd considering we don't have snow storms in Southern California. Odder still, the only thing going through my mind at the time was how good my neighbors cleaning products were.

Be well, my friend.

She blames the voters that did not come out in droves to support her husband and the democrats during the time millions of people were losing their homes, jobs and pensions while democrats and her husband passed the hideously flawed ACA after letting the GOP water it down and passing any bills to help main stream Americans.

It is the people's fault that while Obama was transferring $29 trillion to the banks while they were committing fraud and letting them continue to throw people out of their homes.

After Obama cut payroll taxes for 2 years and the increase in the spying industry complex and so many,, many, many, many, many other things he did that hurt the working class at the benefit of the elite one.

Sure, Michelle, it's our fault for not voting for Obama after he betrayed every damned campaign promise he made during his election.

Good lord lady how disgusting it is for you to do that and not seeing your husband for what he truly is. But how nice for you huh to get to purchase a vaunted house in the Hamptons after your husband started getting his reward for his work with paid speeches, your book sales and your Netflix deals.

It wasn't our fault that your husband watched as blacks and other minorities were murdered by the cops and said nothing. That he murdered millions of Muslims when he continued Bush's war of terror in the Middle East and Asia. That he murdered the country of Libya that was the most prosperous country and then watched as slaves were bought and sold there. Imagine that. The first black American president brought slavery to Libya. How despicable for you to now blame us for not wanting to reward his cowardice and murderous ways by voting for him and saying that we give him our permission to continue doing all those things.

Fuck you, Michelle Obama, and fuck your husband, Barack too.

One more thing. Was your husband that weak that instead of standing up to Mitch McConnell and letting him block his agenda or was it that he didn't actually want the things he was trying to get passed? Yeah we know the truth. It is just like the game democrats are playing now with passing all kinds of great bills that Pelosi knows damn well that they will never pass.

working women, be they black or white or something yellowish in between. She weaseled out, and didn't hesitate to 'belittle" even women, who were in their private lives fighting for their rights, demanded true equality and struggled to feed their kids. "If they cooked for their children every day that is really dumb", she said. She said cooking three times in a week, that is enough. Great advice, right? Especially for poor single women raising kids and not earning enough to put enough lunch money in their kid's lunch boxes to let them eat Freedom Fries with Burger-fatty-bombers ... each day.

That little 'lapsus linguae' turned me so off, I lost any interest in what she had to say further and didn't buy her book. It was an open air speech with a huge crowd at BCC High School in Bethesda, MD. Forgot the year. But it was pretty early in their campaign.

I never forgot that sentence. I have not that much hateful feelings against her, she was just the 'right' partner to a man like the Obama-lefty-lofty charmer. Both smooth talking, supposedly more of a 'your heart grabbers than pussies' political so-called black folks couple, who wanted power. They didn't risk anything, played with their skin color fuzzy-style, something presidential looking must have been in for them, otherwise only heartfelt soulless kisses, hugs and no character substance. She started to talk like this recently, but I turned it off and listened to something else. They preach with the same words over and over

They were kind parents though. Tried to protect their kids and heavy-lifted them into the elite schools, like so many rich social democratic minded political have done before.

Kudos. People have no idea what her history was during the time they lived in Chicago. She treated poor people horribly when she worked in one of the big hospitals there. People hold them both up as the fighters for the working class when it’s just the opposite. This is when they decided to fight for the elite and throw the rest of us away. I don’t remember all the details, but that was when I first started seeing them as phony hypocrites.

I had found old video clip of Barak Obama from the sixties. Not a rebel ... I thought she was studying law as well and became a lawyer herself.

Well, whatever, few videos reveal much for the gullible viewer. This one is to me an example of using blackness and poverty in a fuzzy way. I personally can't watch those anymore.

Look at the house Michelle grew up in (TC 0:36 + ). It's not shabby at all. I don't see poverty in there.

I always wonder about black women for whom it is said they came out of very humble beginnings bordering poverty - think of Oprah - ended up and how they sell their color and their supposed poverty through the media.

You know who was a poor black woman I got to know? My mother in law. Born and raised in a tiny African village, gave 12 births (7 of them made it) never lived in more than a hut and cooked for everybody around her. She had a tiny pension of around 40 dollars a month in her old age, because her husband worked for the German colonialists back in the days (wwI times).

Ok, the film just doesn't look right to me. Sometimes one of our white youngish producers in the ARD studio in WAshington wanted to throw her shoes at the TV screen because we hated the white youngish US reporters who did those interviews like in the above video clip. It was true on facts, but not true on consciousness)

All I remember from that time is that I thought that Barak Obama had no clue about European history and no understanding of the African roots his father came from. That together with some 'charming arrogance'. I saw the arrogance and skipped the charm so to speak. I don't know exactly anymore when I started to feel that way. Unfortunately. So few foggy memories
in my mind.

Anyhow, whatever, snow from yesterday.
