“Imagine the world’s most wanted dissident brought to your door. Would you open it?"

If you saw Citizenfour and enjoyed it like me, you were left with one question: "What happened in the weeks after Snowden left the hotel room, and before Moscow?"
The answer to that question is about to be revealed.

After Snowden leaked tens of thousands of secret documents from America’s National Security Agency and Britain’s GCHQ to journalists in the Mira Hotel in Hong Kong, he fled, under the protection of two lawyers, Tibbo and Jonathan Man.

Snowden went to an office of the United Nations to apply for refugee status in an attempt to avoid extradition and then stayed with various refugee families.

Both Tibbo and Man had helped the asylum seekers in the past and felt they would not betray Snowden.

In an interview with Canada’s National Post, Tibbo said: “Nobody would dream that a man of such high profile would be placed among the most reviled people in Hong Kong.”

The revelation now was prompted by the movie Snowden, which is to be premiered in Toronto on Friday. Its director, Oliver Stone, who meticulously researched the film, had been pressing for details of what had happened to Snowden after he left the Mira hotel.

Snowden, in a text sent to the Post, expressed thanks to the refugees. “Imagine the world’s most wanted dissident brought to your door. Would you open it? They didn’t even hesitate and I’ll always be grateful for that,” he said.

A refugee from Sri Lanka called Supun Thilina Kellapatha, and his partner, Nadeeka, gave him a place in their small home. He later moved to another flat, where Vanessa Mae Bondalian Rodel, an asylum seeker from the Philippines, lived with her mother and daughter.

Then he stayed with Ajith Pushpakumara, another Sri Lankan who had been helping him move around the city.

Wow. What a great story.

but those details weren't revealed then -- to protect the famiiies, no doubt.

(OT, but I wish Stone or Scorsese would do a detailed history of the Iran-Contra history. Imo, America needs that film.)

I tend to think I'm a pretty big coward, but there are some things you just have to do.

I'd be scared shitless though, esp. if it were here or in Britain or any of the places that, well, that are run by people who actively hate Edward Snowden.

And while the relentless propaganda worked on 2/3 of the American population, it didn't work so well on the millenials:

I also wonder what the results would be now, after so many who were making political hay out of destroying his reputation have been discredited. America has rarely been more disgusted with all of its politicians.

Well done.

Read your posts when ever see them, though have to admit I sometimes dive into them with a 'gotta take my awful tasting meds whether I want to or not' frame of mind lol.

We saw Citizenfour and thought it good. Will be interesting to see what Stone does.

OT but Jill Stein has made supportive statements about Snowden. What guts she has.

Obama should pardon Snowden, but I am not holding my breath.

I saw a televised hour long interview of him with University of Chicago audience on YouTube. He is incredibly eloquent. I would love to see him debate Medusa.

JW, on the other hand, views Snowden as a filthy traitor who should be hung up with piano wire. That's one of the many views I detest about JW--although I am very thankful for the work they are doing on Clinton.

That's disappointing. I expect Republicans to at least be able to support Snowden, if nothing else.

I'm hoping to see it opening day. I don't usually do that, but I feel this is an importent movie. If it delivers valuable information to the public, i.e., one realizes what motivated him, which has the potential to garner more support, I will recommend it and take friends to watch it. I'm hoping the public can get on board and support his actions and press the government to dismiss all charges. Unknw

He looks pretty average, to be honest. It's not as if I'm pondering his visage every five minutes. Hopefully he'd be in disguise, if he's evaded immigration and customs........... and the US Security State.

So, if some guy I don't know, knocks on the door and says 'I'm Edward Snowden, can I come in?', well that's going to be an odd situation.

Plus, the entrance to the basement is via the side door, so if he's going to stop here, that's key.

Thank you, gjohnsit. Amazing story.

Here is a long article, the article The Guardian is quoting:

I read the longish main story and will go back to read the linked stories ans watch the videos included. The peaceful strength in the eyes of the 'little people' who housed Snowden was amazing to see -- they have lived with such hardship.

I was also glad to see that Russia has renewed Snowden's status for another three years. I had wondered about that lately and am glad to see that he should be able to continue living peacefully for a while.

Would suggest all of us who care about Snowden's safety donate money to those families--but I sense an ugly legal (and perhaps also political) bureaucratic tangle might ensue, since they are refugees. What I mean is--I don't know how to help them right.

Perhaps we could talk to one of the lawyers that represents them.

Here's another loonnnnng and interesting story on how the film got made. I happened to read this one and the National Post linked above the other day, and thought I'd add them, gjohnsit, for those interested in Snowden.

NYT Magazine

Oliver Stone wanted a hit — and the chance to put America’s most iconic dissident onscreen. The subject wanted veto power. The Russian lawyer wanted someone to option the novel he’d written. The American lawyer just wanted the whole insane project to go away. Somehow a film got made.

Don't know how this could be safe for them, but I dunno, maybe it's somehow more safe? Like everybody knows about them now?
