Open Thread - Wednesday June 10, 2015

Today I am going to be traveling so I will not be able to respond to comments on this thread until late today. This will be a truly Open Thread. But while you are contemplating what you want to post, I am going to post a little music courtesy of one of my favorite song writers/musicians, Darrell Scott. While many of you may have never heard of Darrell Scott, I suspect some of you are familiar with his songs.

Probably one of my favorite Darrell Scott songs is It's A Great Day to Be Alive. Every time I hear it, it makes me happy. It was made famous by country singer, Travis Tritt. Here is the Travis Tritt version.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4tSE2w53ts]

The Darrell Scott version is a little more gritty, as are most Darrell Scott songs.

Darrell Scott wrote what I believe to be one of the greatest anthems ever written, You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive.

Here is a version recorded by Patty Loveless. Personally, I like hearing a female voice sing this incredible song and Patty does a great job at that.

But here is the Darrell Scott version which has so much soul to it. This is Darrell Scott personified.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtSLMGc4VSA]

Long Time Gone is another well known Darrell Scott song. It was commercially recorded by the Dixie Chicks.

Now here is the Darrell Scott version along with Tim O'Brien.

Finally, I am going to close this diary with a song that Darrell Scott did not write. His father, Wayne Scott wrote this one, It's the Whiskey that Eases the Pain. Great song.

I hope you have enjoyed the music of Darrell Scott. And I hope none of the images I have posted are copyright protected.

Since this is an open thread, please feel free to post whatever is on your mind.

"Great Day" is a big fave around here, where it has served for years as the theme number for a popular acoustic program—Two Penny Opera—on the local community radio station. Scott tours through here now and again, and gets a kick out of that, as evidenced below.

Meanwhile, in other days, a Saudi Arabian court has upheld the sentence of 10 years in prison and 1000 lashes for blogger Raif Badawi, convicted of "breaking allegiance with the ruler" and "going beyond the realm of obedience." The government is said to feel "surprise and dismay" at international reaction to the sentence.

In the United States, the Department of Justice has demanded the website Reason.com stand and deliver identifying information of six anonymous commenters who recently yammered online that the federal judge who presided over the trial of Silk Road potentate Ross Ulbricht should be taken out and shot. On June 1 of this year the United States Supreme Court issued an opinion that, in lay terms, "ruled in favor of people being scary dicks on the internet." However, in that case the scary dick railed mostly against his wife, with occasional bilious swipes at an FBI agent and miscellaneous schoolchildren. And the DOJ in this case will no doubt assert that Deep Meanness involving a judge is Worse. There are, after all, Special Laws no-noing the threatening of federal officials.

The Chinese government has heaved in the hoosegow blogger and multi-media activist Wu Gan for the offense of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble," meanwhile saturating state media with thunderations that "wherever there is trouble, he is on to it like a fly chasing stink," he is "never serious at work," he "wrote a crude novel," and he hails from a no-goodnik family that includes a father who "destroyed a chicken farm." Various other Chinese citizens were earlier compelled to go "on vacation" with police in advance of the anniversary of the June 4 "that's all folks" to Tiananmen Square, while online money transfers involving Wrong Numbers that might invoke the Forbidden Date of June 4, 1989 were for a time derailed.

Russian blogger Alexei Navalny, out of jail for the moment, over the weekend traveled to occupied Siberia to encourage people there to vote in the occupying power's upcoming elections.

Indian blogger Jagendra Singh was set on fire after publicly accusing local politicos of corruption. He's dead. Ten people have been arrested in connection with his burning, though local police claim Singh set fire to himself.

days, could get you tortured or worse. Saudi Arabia and Israel, two America allies, brothers in arms, friends
of folly, patriots of peril, defenders of evil, protectors of the innocent.
How do they get away with it?

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

propaganda.

"Forty-two people were killed in Baltimore in May, making it the deadliest month there since 1972.

When asked what's behind that number, a Baltimore police officer gave an alarming answer. Basically, he said, the good guys are letting the bad guys win.

"The criminal element feels as though that we're not going to run the risk of chasing them if they are armed with a gun, and they're using this opportunity to settle old beefs, or scores, with people that they have conflict with," the officer said. "I think the public really, really sees that they asked for a softer, less aggressive police department, and we have given them that, and now they are realizing that their way of thinking does not work."

The obvious inference being that the pigs need to run around in their MRAPs and military gear, shoot people when they don't obey, and otherwise
violate the civil rights of human beings or we're all going to kill each other.

(CNN)House Democrats are invoking an ominous comparison as President Barack Obama considers sending about 500 more troops to Iraq: the war in Vietnam.

"This is exactly how Vietnam started," Rep. Charlie Rangel told reporters Wednesday morning.

"And if you don't think you're putting them in harm's way, you're not living in the real world," the New York Democrat said.

Rangel, though, said it's "not only unconstitutional, but it's immoral" to send more U.S. forces to join the 3,050 already in Iraq without Congress declaring war.

It would certainly be ironic if the Democrats destroy their party again over a war they don't want but don't know how to extract themselves from.

This just keeps getting worse

An already difficult road for the Trans-Pacific Partnership in the House of Representatives got bumpier on Monday, as controversial Medicare cuts were brought into the mix.

Labor unions and senior citizens' groups are launching efforts to lobby House members against a bill that includes $700 million in proposed cuts to Medicare reimbursements for doctors and hospitals. The cuts would be used to fund a $2.5 billion extension of Trade Adjustment Assistance funding, which aids workers who lose their jobs as a result of trade deals. The TAA extension accompanies legislation known as Trade Promotion Authority, which gives President Barack Obama the ability to "fast-track" trade deals, including TPP, a controversial trade agreement between the United States and 11 Pacific Rim nations.

Chief Congressional Reporter (from right-wing Washington Examiner--but her reporting is usually spot on) just reported that after reporters talked to Paul Ryan, Chairman, House Ways and Mean Committee, it sounds as though he's relatively confident that the House will have the votes, and it is likely that the bill will pass this Friday.

They are trying to do it this week, in order to spare Congressmen (she mentioned Steny Hoyer, MD) from having to go home and be pressured another weekend.

Lovely, eh?
