Coyote Gulch

open thread_105.jpg

If you can call a suburban street a gulch.
I've spotted a lone Coyote walking the street a couple of times in the last month or so. Didn't think much of it, till the neighbors (two different ones) caught me on the way to the mailbox and showed me some video of three little pups under a neighbors car early in the morning a couple of days ago.
I guess they discovered a borrowed hole under an out building at another neighbors home across the street from my own. That lady is away for months at a time working on a cruise ship.
So, we've got a family of them living under this outbuilding in the middle of suburbia. What do they eat?
Well, by this time every year I would have trapped 30 to 40 squirrels and re-located them down to the ritzy neighborhood at the river. But till now I have only trapped three.
And there used to be a regular troop of cats traipsing through my garden at night (using it as a bathroom I suppose) but I've recently seen none.
Moreover, we used to have a couple of wild rabbits wandering through the environs at all time of the day. But no more. Haven't seen any possums or raccoons for awhile either.
So the neighbors and I stood in the street and bantered about what to do about the situation and neither of us wanted to call Animal Control for fear they would be caught and euthanized. Didn't want that on our conscience.
So we three decided to let E2 (who wasn't there) to decide later on (we are such cowards) whether to call or not.
Shortly thereafter, E2 came home and I posed the question to her and she said to leave them alone, they will leave when the food supply runs out.
We have our own Animal Control Department.
Used squirrel trap for sale, make offer.
Thread is open.

.

On occasion the pack gets together with their kin and
does an all nighter howl fest. Yipping and harmonizing.
Have noticed the squirrel population has diminished a bit.

We also have a family of red fox scavenging about. Do not
keep a domestic dog or cat anymore so no worries. The few
woodchucks and raccoons that hang around seem a bit paranoid
for probably good reasons. The rabbits don't stand a chance.

Thanks for the nature update!

How was your trip to Maine? Hope you had a good time.
I have a large dark gray bunny frequenting my garden early in the morning. One can tell it was/is someone's pet, so I think I will try to catch it with my fishing net. It seems really tame enough that I can get within a couple of feet before is moves away.
It's eating my onions and digging holes.

still in Maine - cloudy day, some rain earlier. Bit breezy and coolish.
Don't mind at all. Started a new book and the view out over the lake
is sublime. Was not aware rabbits ate onions. Will you 'relocate' Mr. Bunny
after you catch it?

Maybe post some photos around the 'hood. Really big and fat. And seems well groomed. And definitely not afraid of people. Prime dinner for a coyote.

additional neighbors there is an active hunting in the neighborhood. After the small wild prey is not sufficient the pattern may change. Certain potential prey should not be left outside unattended or in appropriately safe enclosures - dogs, cats, chickens and toddlers.

Prey animals are a constant at my location. Our neighborhood notification is activated for cougars.

Still yourself, deep water can absorb many disturbances with minimal reaction.

has a lot of dogs, but they are all good size ones and well looked after by their owners. Few cats (and even fewer now). But the word is spreading.

My thoughts about living amongst wild critters was shaped by my Dad, later carved into stone after multiple African safaris. Dad was a rescuer. Rabbits, raccoons, fawns, and took the attitude that in order to grow sufficient food for us and our horses and cattle, he had to plant extra for the wildlife. We got ours, they got theirs. On safari, we didn't intrude with any wild animal because they were here first.
Animal control here does not re-home wild animals. They are taken straight to the vet to be put down.
I hope your rabbit stays safe, and that the coyote will help with your garden project until the little family moves on.
Thanks for the OT, friend!

You should know that coyotes are omnivores and will eat fruit and veggies in addition to all kinds of animals from insects and reptiles on up as well as carrion. They will raid trash cans, garbage dumps, and compost heaps They are inquisitive, intelligent and naturally wary of humans. You don't want them to get acclimated to people, so everybody should give them a wide berth.

Just got back from errands, so I have pretty much nothing to say except that Trump should make his crony keep repairing that pool for free until he gets it done right or goes bankrupt. That and maybe that Trump should just walk away from the mideast, all of it

be well and have a good one

Knew they will eat just about anything. I'm seeing scat in the front yard with berry seeds in it, so the mom has found some berry bushes somewhere around the 'hood.
And I agree completely, Trump should call in the warranty work. Clearly the work was defective.
But it was a crony that got the (probably no-bid) contract.
Just goes to show the level of intelligence we're dealing with. He couldn't hire a contractor whose finished work couldn't outlast his time in office.
A real "DUH" moment.
And what goes around comes around.
He left Biden and the Democrats with a crappy failure of a pile of shit in the form of Afghanistan, only to leave himself a crappy little failing stinkin' pile in Iran.
The Constitution needs to be revised to include an age limit of no more than 45 and include an IQ threshold of at least 70.
Thanks for stopping by.
