Openly Eccentric - Open Threat 5/1/16 May Day Edition

open thread.jpg

Happy REAL labor day, or rather the day that is supposed to celebrate the workers of the world. Course in the USA, we have that day set aside in September, for all our back to school shopping needs. Gotta love the fact that we have almost completely inverted the meaning of this holiday in our wonderful capitalistic society. Not that I am a bitter near-commie, or anything... Smile

I'm probably asleep as you read this, and I'm probably not going to get around to doing much of a response till this afternoon, because I'm going to be at the Lucky Labrador here in Portland today, hopefully with a bunch of folks from C99. I am bringing my camera for posterity, but I also totally respect the fact that some folks may not be interested in being recorded, just in case my NSA handler wants to get in touch with them later... KIDDING! Although I must say I do seem to look a lot like the stereotypical "Narc/Counter-revolutionary agent". I mean, white guy, buzz cut, military bearing... might as well just scream "I am everything you think will bust you."

Overall though, I'm a happy guy. Walking for a few hours always helps me feel good, and yesterday spent some time at the multicultural fair over on the East Side of Portland. Well, Car show/Multicultural event. It was a weird dichotomy, but that's Portland BABY! My PTSD didn't kick in for a good half hour, and I toughed it out because my kids were having a good time... Thank god for cannabis when I got home. (Also got some great local toffee which went really well with it.)

---

Moving along to the news,

First Off, John Kerry is off to beat his head against a wall a bit more. Yeah, apparently we're going to be expressing support for a cease fire... while simultaneously shipping more people to the area to "Train" the rebels. Forget talking out of both sides of his mouth, Kerry is talking out his mouth and ass at the same time here.

It's nice that certain parts of Australia are applying for World Heritage Status... The sad thing is that it seems to be primarily a push for more tourism. At this point, with so much of the world history being destroyed by religious fanatics, I would personally prefer to see Heritage sites preserved for their historical import rather than trying to make a few bucks...

So, in news that nobody in the US gives a shit about, Baghdad's "Green Zone" has been overrun and breached by protestors. Apparently the Shia group wants the US backed government to replace their ministers with "Technocrats". Apparently Iraqi's don't like American style deadlock and corruption. Note to Congress and Senate: This is a HINT about what's coming in the future domestically. Please note that tear gas and riot cops didn't work. No amount of cute mike drops at a correspondents dinner is going to help with this one, BTW.

Speaking of Protests... they're going on in Venezuala too. Yeah, Severe drought has resulted in the government not being able to take care of their citizens, and as a result, Massive protests are breaking out all over the country. They're looting for food and generally going crazy. Most of the reason for this is there are no LEGAL and accessible methods for recourse. Once again, the US politicians should be taking serious notes here. They WON'T of course, but that's their Marie Antionette problem, Not mine.

And as usual, Let's Finish off with a little music. I'm a little sparse on bands I haven't already brought up to you folks, so here's a few that I've brought up before, and apologies for repetition. (Different songs though, so I hope it's entertaining to you all.)

You and I keep showing up in near-time but not same-time. If I ever get to Lou I shall see if we can meetup if you are still in Lex.

Q for you, you may still be under the radar, but do you know when one has been made NR if mojo is reset to flatline? Or is that a snowflake thing? Not that I care OT, but that's my case after yesterday.

meet up. I have no vehicle but am the proud owner of a neurotic diabetic cat, so don't plan on going anywhere (every time he stresses, his blood sugar does weird things).

I have been NR before. I lost one bar of mojo that was later restored as I did my usual things. So you should not be flatlined, far from it. Do you know what happened? Was it rec'ing Sean's diary? It's up to 437 recs and still on the Rec List now! Surely they didn't NR 400 people?

I'm so glad we have here to stay sane. Happy May Day to you too!

Will watch when I get home, thanks.

I think he's one of the better ones in the new crop of comics-turned-journalists of whom continue to outshine MSM lapdogs in getting to the heart of the matter since Colbert and Stewart left.

Similarly, I love John Oliver and think he stands above them all, including those earlier visionaries, for doing long exposes and calling for online activism. Another Brit, Russell Brand, has been incredible too. Wish he still had his "The Trews" Youtube channel still going; it was a potent mix of real grassroots activism, ingenious media criticism and hilarity, all with an evolved and principled grounding in empathy, compassion and righteous indignation.

Lee Camp on RT is great too, a fierce and funny radical activist.

However, I can't see how anyone will ever approach Colbert's 2006 performance. That still ranks for me as one of the most powerful shut-downs of a politician and the rancidness of DC ever to be seen.

"The same effort is currently underway in Venezuela, where the economic difficulties the country is facing can be directly attributed to the insidious efforts of Venezuela’s right wing opposition, and its backers in the United States. While corporate media reports over the last two years have shown viscerally shocking images of empty store shelves, blaming supply problems on the incompetence and corruption of the Maduro government, none of the stories bother to examine the question of why supplies have dwindled in the way they have.

There is analysis pointing to corruption (an important problem to be tackled, to be sure), as well as lack of access to capital, and myriad other issues. But never does one find the real crux of the problem being discussed: supply and distribution remains in the hands of the right wing elites whose interests are served by making life unbearable for the masses of poor and working people."
(snip)
"The majority of Venezuela’s imports and distribution networks are in the hands of the elite… Many of the goods needed for Venezuelan consumption are diverted to Brazil and Colombia. We are experiencing manufactured scarcity, a crisis deliberately induced as a means of destabilization against the government…This is psychological war waged against the people of Venezuela in an attempt to intimidate them into abandoning the government and the socialist project entirely.

The significance of this point cannot be overstated, as the lack of basic necessities, coupled with daily obstacles such as long lines at supermarkets, is enough to bring hardened Chavista activists, let alone ordinary Venezuelans, to question or even abandon the political project. And that is precisely the goal – make the economy scream, so the Chavistas will shut their mouths"

I would but I lack both the chops and the time/focus...

Just recently Team Sanders dropped the lawsuit against the DNC over the so-called Datagate incident. Interesting timing. I feel like Bernie really demonstrated how he "gets things done" through that whole thing and I don't really really Sanders people highlighting that aspect of it.

But connect those dots.

- Sanders team noticed some oddities from their end, they report it to DNC but keep it on the downlow, hoping DNC will resolve it quietly. (I forget this part) But nothing happened? then...

- DNC notices oddities and very publicly accuses Sanders team of abusing their privileges and 'hacking' DNC voter files. DNC alerts the media etc and it all blows up.

- Sanders files suit against DNC and demands an independent investigation, now goes 'public' with their accusations of the events that occurred previously, saying their own voter files were also dipped into (see how vague my memory is on this?)

- Sanders then uses this leverage to negotiate several MORE DEBATES with DWS/DNC. He basically wins this round and we get more debates (3 or 4? when where?) Especially tricky and contested was the final Debate to be held in Brooklyn. HRC/DNC resisted hard on that but again, Sanders prevailed and we had that Debate in Brooklyn (April 14).

- NY Primary April 19 (closed, Dems only) ... HRC wins NY w/ Brooklyn voter rolls mysteriously missing 120,000 voters ... Sanders campaign, New York officials cry foul after New York voters report issues

Now ElectionJustice USA is working on that. We should have an idea of how that turns out in a few days, Im not optimistic.

So...

Weren't because of datagate. The additional debates were because Hillary was behind in the polls - in nh, I think. She wanted 1 additional debate, again I think it was for nh (O'Malley was also in favor of the additional debate, obviously), Bernie held out for more, and got 3? More.

Dear Bisbonian,

This November, I’ll be facing a Republican candidate who loves to scapegoat immigrants and a Democratic candidate funded by Walmart and Wall Street to serve the needs of the 1%.
I choose to stand with those fighting for workers’ and immigrants’ rights.

May 1st is International Workers Day, a global holiday recognizing the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, which is interconnected with the struggles being led by immigrants, climate justice activists, the Black Lives Matter movement, young people and the LGBT community.

In solidarity with working people, I have long advocated for a minimum wage of $15 an hour, strengthening workers’ right to organize, and equal pay for equal work.

Join my call to protect workers’ and immigrants’ rights today!

My Power to the People Plan will end unemployment and poverty and recognize the dignity and human rights of everyone in our society and our world, while building a sustainable, just economy that averts climate catastrophe.

Our plan seeks to build a world where families do not have to fear deportation, detention and raids, where black lives matter, where our workers have living wages, and where you are not killed or disappeared for fighting for your community.

In recent years, ruling Democrats and Republicans have criminalized and brutalized immigrant families, perpetuating an unjust immigration system that makes millions of our neighbors vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.

In fact, President Obama has deported immigrants at a higher rate than any previous president, tearing apart families and ruining lives.

We need immigration reform that won’t allow the economic elite to divide working people and turn us against each other anymore.

Under my plan for a just immigration system, we will:

Grant legal status and workers’ rights to undocumented immigrants who are already residing and working in the United States, including a fair path to U.S. citizenship.
Immediately halt deportations of law-abiding undocumented immigrants.
Pass the DREAM act to allow undocumented students to pursue higher education and citizenship, including a repeal of the ban on using in-state tuition.
Improve economic conditions abroad to reduce the flow of economic refugees, starting by repealing the NAFTA and CAFTA trade agreements.
Demilitarize border crossings throughout North America.
End the drug violence by halting U.S.-sponsored drug wars in Central and South America, and treating drug use in the U.S. as a health problem, not a criminal issue.
End U.S. military intervention, CIA coups, and U.S.-trained death squads in Central and South America that have greatly destabilized the region, causing waves of fleeing refugees.

With Clinton and Trump headed towards the nominations of the corporate establishment parties, it’s on us to be the voice for working people.

Sign and share my call to protect workers’ and immigrants’ rights today!

To build a better world, we must reject the politics of fear that seeks to divide us, and build solidarity across borders with the 99% of all nations.

It’s in our hands!

I debated about writing Bernie versus voting for Green which is on the ballot in Florida. I am leaning towards voting Green because I know that my vote will be counted. Green is not on the ballot in all states, but is listed to be on the ballot in Florida. And yes, I understand that Florida is a swing state, but I cannot hold my nose and vote for Hillary under any circumstances. I will vote my conscience and my conscience is very clear in this case.

1st off, you have to divide the states into 3 groups: safe dem, safe republican, swing.

NY is safe dem. So it doesn't matter if the machine pulls the same crap - a republican isn't going to win NY.

Safe R states like the confederacy - they are voting republican no matter what.

Then we get to the swing states, and probably the 2 of most interest are Florida and ohio. Both are republican controlled. Hillary's going to gave a hard time pulling her shenanigans there.

What if states like Michigan or Pennsylvania are in play? We saw that the machine didn't come thru for Hillary in Detroit, and while the philly machine came thru for Hillary, there are a lot republicans outside philly, So can the rest of the state's overcome the big city machine? It's possible. Look at what kept happening in Wisconsin with Walker. Madison/Dane county were big against walker, but Milwaukee city didn't show up.

If it is a Shill vs Drumpf race, this is what the swingy states look like (and yes, there are a few solids that become swingy thanks to the unique crap that is both candidates).

Absolutely swing states - VA, OH, FL, CO, NV, NM

Swing States R leaning - NC, UT, WV, GA

Swing States D leaning - NH, WI, MI, PA, IA

States that could be surprising - NJ, AZ

As of right now, things would be interesting. If Shill does get an indictment recommendation from the FBI, and it is after getting the nomination, she would lose in epic proportions.

This one by Erik Forman, member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW...'the Wobblies'), written to Bernie.

I won't quote it all, just an excerpt:

This is a hard conversation for many of us to have. We’ve been hurt before. Many of us have developed a deep and healthy mistrust in electoral politics, moving to workplace and community organizing to build popular power. There is a reason for this. Many of us poured our hearts into the presidential bids of the Rainbow Coalition, or the long-shot campaigns of Ralph Nader and other Green Party candidates. Many of us turned out to put Obama in the White House on the backs of what was until then the largest grassroots mobilization in a presidential election in history.

Whether they won or lost, all of these electoral campaigns left little behind but broken hearts, and in the most recent and notable case, broken promises.

I think spring and hope are in the air. People seem to be in a panic about Bernie losing. Let's keep focused. I received this in an email yesterday (confirming my calculations):

If Bernie wins just 655 of the 1,016 remaining delegates, he will arrive at Philadelphia with 2,026 delegates—one more than Ms. Clinton. Even if he falls short of that goal, with our help, Bernie will win the nomination at a contested convention. Franklin D. Roosevelt did that in 1932.

Had to find out about the '32 convention and found a lengthy piece from Slate:
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/history/2016/03/how_fran...

The other big news I'm not hearing much about is Ralph Nader's project Breaking Through Power, a major gathering in Constitution Hall in DC May 23-26
https://www.breakingthroughpower.org/
Each day has a different theme – Breaking through Power, Media, War, and Congress.
Speakers range from Jim Hightower to Micheal Moore

There is also http://www.thepeoplessummit.org/

On June 17-19, in Chicago, after the party primary season and before the party conventions, we seek to bring together activists committed to a different kind of agenda: a People’s Agenda that can enhance and expand issue campaigns and hold all elected officials accountable to popular demands for justice, equality and freedom. We envision this Summit as further deepening the relationship between participating organizations rooted in principled anti-corporate politics, development of community leaders, direct action not based on partisan identification, and strategic organizing to build power.

And another effort at pushing the movement https://brandnewcongress.org

America needs an honest, accountable Congress to enact Bernie's program. But trying to win each Congressional seat one-by-one is impossible. So let's run one campaign to replace Congress all at once (except those already on board) that whips up the same enthusiasm, volunteerism and money as Bernie's presidential campaign.
We're building on the tools, tactics and networks that we developed together on Bernie's campaign. But to pull this off, the volunteer movement will have to wield more power and resources than on any campaign before. This means volunteers on the ground will run their own offices and voter contact operations, and will have access to all necessary tools and materials from the start. Get ready for the most beautiful campaign ever.

Let's keep working. Let's keep moving. It's time for a revolution!

Sorry! I had my shift covered and the kid texted me late last night that's he can't take my shift after all due to "family stuff". I kinda figured something was up as he hadn't been to work. I am truly bummed BUT I know there will be future meet ups for us all. I have no intention of going to the Free Speech Zone Cage of Kos.

Again sorry. I have to get used to working for a small company of a dozen rather than a large retail company.

DetroitMan, thank you!

Here's a song written by Roy Wood (of The Move...one of my favorite British bands of the 60s). It sounds like he's singing it too, even though it's credited to a group called The Acid Gallery.

I like your boy said Caroline to Jane
You must know why for it's the first of May
Let's go dancing on the green
Fair girls one to seventeen

Dance 'round the Maypole
Dance 'round the Maypole
Over the green fields
And down to the hay
Lift up your hearts
And dance 'round the Maypole
Run to your true love
And dance all the day

Sir my friend too is a handsome cavalier
You and I will escort her to the fair
Bluebells 'round the cherry tree
This girl gave them all to me

Dance 'round the Maypole
Dance 'round the Maypole
Over the green fields
And down to the hay
Lift up your hearts
And dance 'round the Maypole
Run to your true love
And dance all the day

One minute seemed to be right
When she expressed her delight
At finding sixpence in her shoe
How can you romance apart
When gaze on out to the start
Well there's a shadow chasing you

This young girl threw her cares into a well
Now I've learned for the time has rang the bell
No more dancing on the green
Since I've found another scene

Dance 'round the Maypole
Dance 'round the Maypole
Over the green fields
And down to the hay
Lift up your hearts
And dance 'round the Maypole
Run to your true love
And dance all the day

Dance 'round the Maypole
Dance 'round the Maypole
Over the green fields
And down to the hay
Lift up your hearts
And dance 'round the Maypole
Run to your true love
And dance all the day

It gives me great joy to hear of this, best of luck of folks who organized it and are committed to attending today.

This site is t the beginning of something important and special as it continues to grow and attract forward-thinking compassionate progressive folks tired of the ruse. Meeting in person just strengthens the bonds that are so naturally occurring here.

Look forward to seeing some documentation of the event, Dmw. Thanks for offering to capture it for the rest of us.

Later today, I'll be attending the day's events at the MayDay Space in Brooklyn, which is a community center/activist space formed by a contingent of Occupy and social justice activists.

I hope we can do similar meet-up in NYC soon!

and creepy.

I just popped over to twitter, theres two tweet threads one is DeRay's and the other is Greenwalds. Sentiments in replies in the threads are VERY similar, I found that interesting, for some reason I was mildly surprised.

On the topic of the re-enactment USG is doin of the bin laden raid on the anniversary

If it sounds like a made-for-TV-movie script, it probably is? Too neat and tidy with dramatic flourishes.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

it might still be going on. I have to work so I left about 40 minutes ago. It was better than talking online! I'll say this: we have some smart people here at c99p. I found myself saying or thinking "that's right" a lot this afternoon.

I ended up having to work. Long day, too. Cops showed up but only due to a car/pedestrian issue in front of our business, We were more than wiling to help as we have video of the street - but they still had to act all big ass and bad .

Still shaking a bit.

I guess one of them made a comment about our business. I work at a medical marijuana dispensary. We had to explain to the cops the difference between a pot shop and a medical marijuana dispensary.. I let the budtender whose 8 yr old child is surviving leukemia because of extracted cannabis oils explain the difference.

Wished i could have been with you all instead. I'm sure there will be many many many more gatherings ahead.
