A Beautiful Irony
A thought occurred to me after reading this panicky little screed by Markos.
With news that a pro-Clinton PAC is spending money to “push back against” online commenters attacking Hillary Clinton, this site has degenerated into the nastiest meta infighting I’ve ever seen. Worse than 2008’s Clinton v Obama battles, and (maybe) worse than 2004’s Dean v Clark v Kerry shitstorm.
At the root of it all, the relentless accusations that anyone defending Hillary is a “paid David Brock shill”. The accusations are hurled against old time users with lack of self awareness, and they’re certainly used to try and shut down any newer users. Indeed, there’s lots of mocking of “new users” using scare quotes.
A message board type website that loses the trust of its established user base is toast. Websites never come back from this - ever. Brock's Correct the Record are paying people to corrupt social media and progressive/Dem websites. TOP is a Democratic party website therefore Brock/CTR, working for Clinton, are responsible for destroying trust between established Dkos users and the website's owner. It almost doesn't matter whether a single paid comment or diary has been posted - the perception and possibility are enough to destroy the bond of trust.
This means that that Daily Kos could well be ended by the Clinton campaign - Very ironic not to mention very Clintonian.

A quick note
As I've stated before I see that place as a net negative for the progressive movement. It exists as a funnel to dilute and dissipate progressive thought and action. The current primary nastiness is just a battle in an ongoing war.

Yes, everyone was so wonderfully progressive
over there until Dems won the Presidency. After that, the layers of the onion have been peeled away to reveal the rotted, moldy core of Daily Kos, an outlet now comparable to Fox News in its complete and utter compliance with the Dem establishment agenda.

In many ways it is worse than Fox News
At least FNC doesn't hide its bias - there is very little pretense about what it is. I would equate DKos more with CNN.

It's a mere reflection of...
...the rotted, moldy core of the corporate-controlled national Democratic Party. Along with the Republican't Party they are two sides of the same filthy coin. (One of the thirty pieces of silver, perhaps?)

Who is this Kos guy?
He sounds like an asshole...
Kos can blame himself too
I'm not following the link, but it's good to know he's panicking now. Kos went full-on Establishment when the Obama administration was trying to co-opt progressives five or six years ago, and I gave DailyKos a rest then too. I came back for the Bernie excitement, but then the March 15 purge drove me away again, most likely for good. According to their own straw poll, 60 percent of the people on the site wanted Bernie for President. And Kos said, in effect, get off my lawn!
"We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty."
I suspect that he is ruing
his decision to throw his lot in with the Democratic establishment. He really thought that getting a seat at the big people table meant that he would get fed too.

agreed.
If he was putting the place on the block for sale, the price must have dipped something fierce because of his Ides of Kos edict. And now, he cannot figure how to put the genie back into the bottle.
He has ruined that place, and he did it all by himself.
Actually, the stain that will be applied to him because of decision to turn on the majority of his users is something that will be personal and never go away. I cannot see CNN, PBS, MSNBC, not even FOX having him on ever again. A major screw up, the demolition of his baby - it truly is awesome to behold.

Good assessment imo
I cannot see any good endpoint to this from his point of view. I guess he may be angling for a position in a possible Clinton administration but something doesn't quite stack up there. As much as I find him hypocritical and opportunistic I really do believe that he treats his staff very well and would be surprised if he was throwing them under the bus knowingly.

seriously?
I don't see those outlets having any problem putting tainted "pundits" on the air.
I don't disagree with the assessment that he has alienated his own base and that the days of DailyKos as a potential game changer are over. But, he put his money on the establishment table and as long as they can claim he has a following - which they'll milk for as long as possible - I'd think the establishment would be happy to use him as a "progressive" representative.
Not to mention the ass-kissing
and puppy tumbling going on after the latest non-decree. What a rock star that dude has become. Interesting (no value judgement beyond) that many of the FPers, presumably too busy to ever visit their latest publication, working on more exposes and insights, are now piling in as well, just not in their own stories...The kids with the Bus Patrol badges.

Hi stevej, too right: grieve it, but leave it and forget it.
Folks, turn from the past and face the future, right here on c99, among progressives. And work on adding practical skills along the way as we discuss those more ethereal things that are important, but also outside of our control.
Best wishes and enjoy your day today,

I haven't posted there for years
this is not about grieving, honestly. - it is about removing an obstacle to a more progressive USA.
My fear is that people who get sucked into TOP may be lost to the movement.

No worries, stevej! I was talking to us in general. Your post is
an excellent reminder of why top belongs in the dustbin of our memories. You pointed out how he is now experiencing karma and I think that this is a very appropriate experience for Zuniga to go through. I also know that folks have invested there emotionally for long periods and that grieving is natural. That's why I said, "grieve it but leave it and forget it." I do understand that it is a process for most of us. I hope I didn't confuse anyone. We're all at different stages of the process. Cheers mate, enjoy your day :=)

I really
do see how the GOS stuff becomes annoying and do try to limit my TOP commentary. I suspect that once the election is over the problem will sort itself out. It does make for a kind of fascinating social experiment though.
Completely o/t I am really enjoying the resilience stuff - I think that you are really on to something and I am learning a lot.

I've been there since Jan, 2004.....................
Over the years I watched the tone change and have found less and less to read or comment on. Lately when I did comment, I was hide-rated.
In my internet life, just like real life, I only leave once, and I don't look back. As some obscure, forgotten president once said, "We, need to look forward........"
That's what I'm doing. Either change the Democratic Party or start a third party, whatever it takes. Bernie's 5 million member list would be a good start.
I see potential
in getting together with the Greens - Similar philosophically and any differences could easily be contained within a single tent so to speak.
I joined Dkos at around the same time that you did but scrambled my password a few years back.

Third Party, not only Green Party
Still surprised when so many suggest "Green Party." They've been active for years, and seem not to have created the political structure, fund raising, grassroots volunteer organization, online presence, which Bernie Sanders already has in less than one year.
It would probably be to the advantage of the Green Party, to be united with what ever is created as the Third Party, after this election. Seems on the state levels, the Green party is already united with several different parties, based on the states.
Bernie Sanders has shown far more ability to fund raise, and draw Yuuugge crowds than the Green Party.
Wonder what Working Families will be doing too?
Allying with the Greens
would give an instant 'in' to this general election cycle and they would get a much higher profile. Imo its a win/win.
“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” -Voltaire
Its dead
The Green Party is dead.
The American political landscape has shifted, offering a refugee from the storm is no longer a viable party alternative, in the current paradigm greens are mired in the mud of 10 years ago while Bernie is sprinting to the finish line.
Ten years ago the Green Party had an opportunity to expand beyond the niche.
FDR 9-23-33, "If we cannot do this one way, we will do it another way. But do it we will.
I agree, stevej. It is time for a Red-Green Party (not a Red
Green party - that would be at Possum Lodge :=)
Red = democratic socialism @ Bernie's 5M list
Green = deep environmentalism @ Green Party
Canada's Green Party exhibits both these features, but is in dire need of a charismatic leader. A Red-Green American Party would be a welcome, welcome sight. Best wishes mate,

Weaning myself, day by day, less of that chaos factory
is allowed into my life. Think it has been a full week now since I have even clicked onto the cesspool. I spent about a month uprating my favorites (Opol for one) and then dodging. Sorry to leave some wonderful writers over there to fight without them having my/our back. But I must disengage and walk away. (almost)All of my favorite writers have either moved here or to JPR anyhow. I usually lurk in the weeds anyhow, but this place is more like lurking in the flower bed.
I go for Opol, LD, Bob Swern, MB
and a few other good people. I suspect that they will be looking for alternative venues in the very near future. I now check in here a whole lot more than there which is a very good thing for my sanity.

It has been weeks for me
and I can honestly say I no longer miss it. I found I was just angry much of the time trying to argue with the Hillbots. And who needs that extra stress when there's more than enough to worry about? No more clicks from me, period. Once in a while I get tempted to check out the Diary titles but then I just come back here and forget about it.

I tend to advocate for not contributing content (including diaries, comments, recs and flags) - if that happens people will stop going there anyway.
The pro Clintons won't get the traction here because the rules, such as they are, are much harder to game imo.

I always suspected that there was something wrong with Markos
When he posted is was like he marched into the place spouting orders, like he was from on high. He clearly lets you know that he owns the place. What I would have expected from a smart, socially conscious person is an appreciation of the community. Without that community DailyKos would be nothing. His responsibility should have been to listen to the talented community that was building his empire mostly for free. The great thinkers and writers that passed through that place were amazing. Many finally were asked to leave or left in frustration. Considering that the major common thread for all of us is community and democracy, he is clearly the wrong person to be running a progressive blog.
The revelations that I have read here on c99 today have blown my socks off. Markos has no credibility left. Ex CIA trainee??? WTF. Did he go through the enhanced interrogation training? The CIA are illegally present in every country in the world. They have no use for laws. Markos got started as a paid shill for Howard Dean? No wonder he doesn't want shills called out. I have to quote this from the essayist:
Do the fucking Clintons destroy anything if it gets in their way to power?
Capitalism has always been the rule of the people by the oligarchs. You only have two choices, eliminate them or restrict their power.
Yes
Absolutely - this, I feel, is where a lot of the current animosity towards him stems from. It is much deeper than which candidate he is shilling for.
Rhetorical question?
“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” -Voltaire
And you know, if these ConservaDems really
wanted to have a lasting historical legacy in this country? If it wasn't just all about the damned money and the power, my God what Hillary might be able to do if only she was willing. Mr Obama too - his legacy could have been fighting for all Americans, while he'd have been pilloried in the media and Congress, he damned sure would have had most of the Middle Class solidly behind him. What a fucking WASTE. I think sometimes that is what really galls me the most - you want power and to be famous, then by God do the real work and quit shilling for short term gain. And history WILL judge these bastards harshly, I have no doubt, it really is only a short term gain in so many ways. And that is where the waste comes in. My depression era grandmother too is rolling over in her grave at the utter waste of it all, and she was a Republican.

The "If Only's" are indeed a heartbreaker.
I often think my Republican daddy, who taught me by word and deed all my liberal values, would be utterly horrified to see what a spectacle has been made of his party and beloved country.
Traffic is down slightly since the edict.
I predict it will take a nose dive after the election. The paid shills will quit posting and visiting and the one issue voters (A WOMAN, ANY WOMAN, IN THE WHITE HOUSE NOW NO MATTER HOW REPUGNANT SHE MAY BE!) will lose interest. The Bernie supporters who are still trying to fight the good fight will be gone after the primary if Bernie is unable to pull this off. Who does that leave? Just the "vote straight D no matter what" types. I won't be surprised to see traffic down 40% a year from now.
It's already down about 1/3...
From the edict... Are you saying an additional 40% on top of that? If you are it's probably a slight underestimate...
If you are saying just another 7% from now it is a gross under estimate....
One thing for sure...
The best traffic day ever for DKus was the day we all showed up to watch him commit webmaster suicide... March 15, 2016...
