Important Announcement - Replies Notification Rollout

Greetings folks! This is the big one we've all been waiting for, the Replies Notification has been completed and implemented. We have also made some improvements to our other monitoring programs as well, so you'll find a complete and efficient system to monitor all aspects of our essays and comment threads. I'll list all new and improved programs below.

First I'd like to thank all those that have donated to caucus99percent in the last few weeks, it is your contributions that are allowing us to make these site improvements. I am not able to tell exactly which members are making contributions so I don't send out individual thank you responses to the donations, but I'm using this venue to thank you all, each and everyone, you know who you are.

-----------------------------------

These programs are for monitoring your personal comments and essays. They can be found on your User Page.

Comment & Reply Notification (My Comments): If you are used to using this page to monitor your comments and replies, then you'll find our version of it by clicking the "My Account" link in the header banner at the top of the page, then click the "My Comments" link. You'll find it an exact replica of the DK4 version minus the Hiderate column, which is a beautiful thing in and of itself. Bookmark the "My Comments" page, you'll find it very useful.

My Essays: If you want to monitor your essays for the number of comments made and the number of new comments made then this is the program you want to use. It can be found by going to My Account/My Essays. You'll also find handy "Edit", "Delete" and "Add a New comment" links there. Bookmark this page also if you monitor your essays frequently.

-----------------------------------

These programs are for monitoring all comments and essays site-wide in real time. They can be found in the left sidebar.

Essay List: if you are used to using this page to monitor new diaries in real time, then you'll find our version of it here. You'll find it very useful for keeping up with new essays, the total number of comments and any new comments that are made. Bookmark it, it's much easier than using the Community Content page to monitor essays.

Comments List: This is the old "Comment Stream" page that has been renamed to the "Comments List". it is very useful for monitoring all site-wide comments in real time. it's much easier than using the "New Comments" listing in the left sidebar. Bookmark it if you want to monitor all comments in chronological order.

-----------------------------------

Those four programs will give you a complete and efficient method to monitor all the content that passes through caucus99percent.com. Enjoy!

Next up:

Add a "Parent" link to each comment to make it easier to tell what comments the replies belong to.

Add an exclamation point to the gold "New" text in the comments to make using the browser find function more efficient. And if possible to enlarge the size of the text of the "New" heading.

After that, more UI improvements and site software upgrades.

Thanks again for your donations and patience.

Maybe the size is alright. -- or else the name and date will get larger too?

be bigger so it would be easier to catch as you scrolled down the page looking for new comments. That was before it could be searched for. Now that we can search, maybe the new being bigger is not needed. Would need to ask the original requester and I've forgotten who that was.

I think it could be made bigger without affecting the other type on the line.

It's not important if its going to mess other things up. I'd prefer not to have Ctrl+F to navigate a long thread though.

I don't think it has to mess anything else up. It sounds like JtC is going to do it and that is fine. I thought maybe it wasn't needed anymore, but if it is, that is sure fine with me.

so all you have to do is click a button rather than keyboarding Ctrl+F.

Personally, I don't care about the size of the New text, but if it's easy to implement then sure why not.

So glad to see you saw the request about adding a character for New so we could search for it. I was never sure if you got that. I'm going to use it all the time.

what a huge surprise. Then I read your post. All great improvements making c99 easier to use.

I'm sure you or others already know how to do this. If I go to the members list or the essay list, can I sort them by a column. If I want to make the member list alpha, can I do it? If I want to sort the essay list by highest or lowest number of recs or alpha, can I do that?

off to figure out how to search by new.... Thanks JtC for all of it.

Here I am, six novels all needing a final rewrite, many paintings and sketches, sculptures and 3D art, a decent practice, and a wonderful Honey who cares for me far better than I deserve, and I still ask myself, "What do I want to do when I grow up?"

I keep finding new things to try, to learn, to master, and on top of that, I read a hell of a lot, but quickly. ( I devour novels at a page at a glance - the result of an ever blinder mother getting a mechanical speed reading machine she never used, but I used on every Nancy Drew, Hardy Boy and Tom Swift book I read when I was four)

Not knowing keeps kindred spirits from connecting. Yes, a comment can be made. If one compares the number of users online with the number of comments in essays, we barely speak to each other. We may read and like, but comments are not our strong suit. Or is it just me?

An average of about 20 comments per day, and it undoubtedly would have been higher if not for DK5 and primary wars! But still, there are plenty of comments to which I just want to respond with an uprate, "I hear ya and I approve," not really having any more to add to the discussion. But as it is, you don't know that I approve, only that someone does! Maybe that's good enough. I don't know.

The original consensus was, c99 should choose to deliberately leave that feature out.

elenacarlena's picture

Are cliques necessarily bad things? We've been talking about joining as groups for various purposes, after all. I love, love, love that we can't flag or downrate!! Only uprate or not. So there can't be any bullying cliques. So I'd still vote to add the feature, I find it supportive, but YMMV.

JtC, if we can add it, perhaps we can put up a discussion and/or a poll to get feedback from the whole community on whether or not we should add it?

comment above. It's worked very well without it and yes, cliques can be a bad thing, we all know examples of that.

up

Elena has a point that it is a way for people to establish a connection/group. At least people can connect and email each other if they know who.

When we made this decision, we were all fresh out of the hell hole, tender, and trying to do as many things different from the other place as possible. Since then, we've had a huge influx of people with few to no problems. Maybe it isn't knowing who likes something as much as it is the flags and the attitudes that so many regularly abused at the other place. I think it is worth rethinking. If it doesn't work or causes a problem, it can be dumped. The more c99 resembles dk4 without the punishments and attitudes, the more to home and comfortable everyone will feel. Anyway, my two cents.

outvoted at least for now. I still don't see how supportive uprating would be dangerous, because there's no destructive downrating, but it looks like some folks are still very tender. I think I'll assume that if I'm getting uprates then everybody likes me. So if someone doesn't, they'll have to comment and make it very obvious. Wink And everyone can pretty much assume that I uprated them because I do as long as it's not something outrageous; I appreciate good discussion.

and enhance using tribal, racial, ethnical and gender related issues as a tool to divide. Really, I don't think we need that. Came here to avoid exactly that. You have a private messaging system and can use that one to connect with people, exchange emails and organize yourself as a group. You can also to find out if someone is in your neighborhood and just meet in person.

is to bookmark the "My Comments" page in your browser. There are too many other important functions on your user page to make My Comments the default.

Here's what I do. I use Firefox browser and use the Bookmarks Toolbar (View/Toolbars/Bookmarks Toolbar). That will give you a long toolbar to add your favorite sites that can be accessed with one click. I have a bookmark in the toolbar for the Community Content page, the Essays List page, and My Comments. I can easily jump from one page to another with one click. Easy peasy.

All of a sudden, it just quit working and went to "view" in my account when I clicked on my bookmark. So after reading your comment, I deleted all of c99s bookmarks, closed and reopened my browser, re-bookmarked comments, and now it works. I'm a pro at breaking the internets.

Thanks,
dk

In order for the bookmark to work, one has to open a new tab and click on it. Then if you leave the tab open, it will be there. If oth you click on my account in the site instead of the bookmark, it goes to view. So much to remember. Dash 1 Dash 1 Dash 1

but in Firefox if the bookmark names are too long you can shorten them by right clicking on the bookmark and selecting "Properties", you can then rename it to whatever you want. You can squeeze in more one-click bookmarks that way and if you run out of room you can create a folder in the toolbar that you can load up as many bookmarks as you want.

JtC, thanks so much for the update on the comments page--that makes it possible to join into conversations with give-and-take and it is very, very useful.

I hope that you/admins don't change your minds about the thumbs-up being anonymous. I really like that. Back on TOP, there was/is a tendency to obsess about who did or didn't rec you which I think is a waste of emotional energy. I understand what some people are saying here about seeing who uprates as being a way to connect and establish relationships and I respect that. However my personal feeling is that you can accomplish the same thing thru posting a comment or sending a PM.
