Clinton Super PAC Caught Spending $1 Million on Social Media Trolls

This is why I have given up arguing with idiots on the internet. I will guarantee GOS is filthy with these bastards. IIRC, GOS created a rule to Ban anyone who called another user a "troll". That may be a measure to protect the embedded trolls. Perhaps their true goal is to do a CIA-type communications operation to create uncertainty and doubt in the Bernie camp.

BUSTED: Pro-Clinton Super PAC Caught Spending $1 Million on Social Media Trolls
A Super PAC headed by a longtime Clinton operative is spending $1 million to hire online trolls to “correct” Bernie Sanders’ supporters on social media.

...

Correct The Record (CTR), which is operated by Clinton attack dog and new owner of Blue Nation Review David Brock, launched a new initiative this week called “Barrier Breakers 2016” for the purpose of debating supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders — or “Bernie Bros,” as they’re referred to in Correct the Record’s press official release — on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and other social media platforms.

The problem is at some point manually approving and vetting each user will no longer be practical...

The site will outgrow even JtC's abilities, and it is better to grow a system of user permissions such as noobie, member, trusted member, moderators, super moderators, and admins, before they are needed than when the site has become broken and overwhelmed...

My questions were more along the lines of software capabilities...

Low level moderators able to temporarily suspend posting privileges & soft delete
Super moderators able to issue bans and hard delete

Software abilities for searching out socks and abusive users with e-mail addresses at the same domain name and I'm not talking about yahoo gmail & hotmail...

And other security software...
Like I said I know nothing about this software platform...

I think there is value to a "Flagging System," not one where users are given the ability to "Hide" a comment, or diary, but rather a notification to moderators to take a close look at what was posted, and the poster themselves as a troll.

Just looking there is already a lot here that although I'd like to read and comment on there aren't enough hours in a day to do so. As this site expands and the trolls come out to play it is not inconceivable that admins & moderators will not view a considerable amount of the comments or even diaries. At that point users being able to use a "Hey Look At This Shit" flag will be essential to keeping the site clear of a proliferation of HillBots or something similar...

Im not opposed to the opposition coming here, and having a discussion, or intelligent debate.
There might even be possibilities to reform such a person...

However, I am venomently opposed to a user coming here and making repeated comments that are proven lies, doing the gish gallop in comments, attacking other users, etc.

Once flagged the admins & moderators can then examine the user's comments & diaries to make the determination and take appropriate actions...

I can get behind.

The Democratic party is so corrupted it needs to go the way of the Whigs...

This Primary has made it abundantly clear to me that they have just been paying lip service to progressive ideals since at least the 90's and never had any real intention of implementing any of our policy priorities that may conflict with their corporate masters wishes...

It has been a dismaying, yet needed revelation.

At least now we can work towards getting shit done instead of trying so hard to prop up a slowly dying party...

If a female candidate on the right supported the exact same positions as Hillary with the same history of policy decisions, etc. they would be crucifying her.

It's sad, but it makes me think that too many voters will excuse anything their candidates do out of a "Team" mindset.

While not realizing it, what they are doing is quite comparable to cops turning a blind eye to other cops bad behavior, something they universally condemn.

Hypocrisy has never seemed to be in short supply over at camp Clinton...

It's some kind of odd tribalism that seems to come in many flavors but made with the same basic ingredients.

But then I put myself in the position of a Hillary supporter who would say the same thing but it'd be RWTP and now they simply don't want to sort out the fact from the fiction.

I at least try to look into the ones that seem well sourced and probable but I could imagine that given a few more years of this shit I wouldn't even bother to do that.

BBB can at least sound somewhat reasonable at times. Denise & Armondo are off the rails and demand unwavering support of anything they say. I've said before that I saw Armondo repeating talking points after AZ, in a 'we need to sue' diary. I, as delicately as possible, hinted at the point that I recognized his parroting some sort of wide spread memo.

I met Denise in Austin (TX meetup Feb 2015), and one-on-one asked her about how to get young adults of color to even register to vote - telling her how I took a stack of registration forms to my Java class full of Hispanic students, one black, and three white, and not a single kid took a form, but that one white kid said no because he didn't want to do jury duty. (This was fall 2014 class). She didn't even attempt to answer me, but said, "They don't want me on a jury because they think I'm a communist." She's likable in person, but online, she's like a mean girl. A pack leader. Do as I say, or feel my wrath, and her blind followers attack, even when she's wrong.

Was Election Justice USA Censored by Facebook?

The site will likely be put back up soon, but what is going on? At first glance, it appears this may have been a case of censorship. On a Reddit thread about the situation, commenters said that Facebook had ridiculous problems with censorship. A site with so many followers, leading a lawsuit with national implications, and run by an organization that’s talked about all over the media, shouldn’t be removed.

But one person pointed out that Facebook has automated systems that remove people and pages based on flags and reports sent from other Facebook users. Once an actual person reviews that removal and determines it was fraudulent, they can reinstate the page. An atheist group’s Facebook page experienced exactly this after Facebook was inundated with flags from people who cited the page as being guilty of “bullying.” These were later determined to be false citations from people who didn’t like the page, and the page was reinstated.

So it’s possible that Election Justice USA wasn’t a victim of censorship from Facebook, but a victim of false reports and censorship attempts from individuals unhappy with the organization. In time, maybe we will know exactly what happened.

But you wouldn't know it from the MSM. She of course also profits (!) from all of the DLC help. A really good piece here:
"How Sanders Wins

Bottom line — Sanders will almost certainly make sure that every state votes. If a frustrated and angry Hillary Clinton (and her harshest surrogates) go even more negative, she’ll drag her down own unfavorables even further, making Sanders’ case for him that he should be the candidate in November. Her favorability rating is minus-24 now, and Trump’s is minus-41, proving there’s room to the downside.

This isn’t about wishing for her failure. But it is about looking at the trends and seeing what they imply about the national situation in July. If that poll at the top of this post, and others like them, start showing separation, with Sanders trending up to +10% or more, and if Sanders fundraising continues to soar — watch out.

At that point, Sanders won’t have to tell the Democratic Party to “nominate Bernie.” He won’t have to say a word. The whole of the non-Republican country will say it for him: “Are you really going to nominate the least electable candidate?” And then what will happen? (Hint: If the in-the-tank superdelegates nominate Clinton anyway, the result is on them, and you can say so as often as you like.)

Interesting times, yes?"

IMO, there are enough people paying attention that know what a skeezy pair of grifters the Clintons are and there are MORE of them than there are actual Clinton supporters.

And nobody's impressed with Chris Cilizza that I know of. He's got a honkin' case of Overeager Cub Reporter Syndrome lately, and I don't get it, because he's been around long enough to be good at what he does.

The TPP puts us over the top. IMO, that one proviso which allows "mutli-nationals" to appoint a tribunal to overrule a sovereign government's justice system is enough of an impact on the Constitution to trash it completely.

That's got to be the biggest end-game there, they have to know that allowing non-government INCs to overrule a sovereign government's legal decision-making is tantamount to granting said INCs sovereignty on par with nation-states. They have to know that already.

When the people figure what game they're playing it may be too late.
To know the game one must complete the puzzle. Some of the pieces are the massive transfer of wealth to the 1%, militarization of law enforcement, the erosion and abrogation of constitutional civil rights, the surveillance state, drone warfare, corporate takeovers of food production, water and land, the lawlessness of wealth and power and more.
Now add to the puzzle catastrophic climate change, which is driven by the needs and wants of the masses.
Yes they know, it's their game and they hide puzzle pieces, often in plain sight.

Virtually everything will be controlled by corporations instead of corporations just gaining more and more power via taking over various roles in the federal government - but this will be for every country who signs on to that shit, not just the US which has enough corporate control of almost everything (including our health care!!!) to pose a real threat. I've felt the noose tightening harder and harder since 12 Dec 2000, followed by taking away our rights - which have STILL NOT been reinstated by repealing the unconstitutional and illegal legislation that have taken away our rights eight years after Obama was sworn in; he capitulated to corporate, banking, Wall Street, war power from day one.

The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power.
— President Franklin D. Roosevelt

Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power.
— Benito Mussolini

Socrates: First, shouldn't we explain how a democracy becomes an oligarchy?
Adeimantus: Yes.
Socrates: The critical step is that the rich figure out how to manipulate politics so the laws benefit them instead of the public.

TPP is completely outrageous. There is no doubt about it. Yes, they know that already.
The knowing creation of a world wide Fascist government appears to be an obvious goal of the PTB to my mind.
I just don't believe that the Fascist State is the end-game however, I think the game continues on to greater tragedy.
I think the only game is the survival and enrichment of the PTB. Once I was sure the Fascist State was the end game in a sense. Now I think climate change has put a new emphasis on the survival aspect of the PTB's game.
Now I believe the end-game is billions of deaths to ensure the survival of the PTB perhaps under the banner of 'Saving the Planet'.
Unless they are stopped.

The point is, I'm not going to dwell on their "depravity" or what they might be planning on. Being concerned with whether They will "go down with the rest of us" seems kind of beside the point. Why even care about that? In the big picture, it really shouldn't matter. Tighten up the focus and use that energy to stop them before they can get to such a point.

Keep it simple! One way or another, all our lives are in danger. Why not go from that point, instead of getting in the weeds? You know, kind of like what's going on here?

Here's where you inspire:

The end-game of granting non-government entities sovereignty on-par with nation-states. At that point, "boundaries" become meaningless.

The TPP MUST BE STOPPED, NOW. The United States Constitution depends on it. If we're to have no borders, we're no longer a country. If we're no longer a country, we no longer need that "goddamn piece of paper" that W. shit all over...

As far as the weeds go, thanks for the belittling advice (not really). The weeds are interesting. You find things like cointelpro, cia and cocaine, Watergate, Iran Contra, Snowden's mass surveillance revelations. It goes on and on. You hear a lot of whispers of things that later prove true in the weeds. In any case, I'm pretty set on thinking what I think. It's kind of a tradition in my family.
BTW did you intentionally block quote your own words as an example of how to be inspiring?
I figure that was a mistake because it seems out of character to me.
One last thing, when someone agrees with you completely about what needs to be done and the urgency of action I think there is little wisdom to belittle them for how they choose to urge action nor if they shout out about another danger intertwined with the current troubles.
Yeah, I got ticked off a little, I'll get over it.

You read way, way entirely too much into that sentence way upthread, because at the time I wrote it, it was NOT specifically applied to anybody. Do I really have to repost the context by which it appeared? Yes, I think I'd better do exactly that:

I used to laugh at Conspiracy Theorists like that and now I don't. And that was pretty clear, assuming you were actually reading and putting due consideration into it.

At the end of the day, it's all about "staying on point" and making note of the fact that the Trans Pacific Partnership is dangerous to the American Constitution.

There are plenty of people in forums across the spectrum who don't want you or I to have that discussion. I can't imagine why that is. Did we ever finish talking about that, do you think?

TPP is completely outrageous. There is no doubt about it. Yes, they know that already.
The knowing creation of a world wide Fascist government appears to be an obvious goal of the PTB to my mind.

I'd rather move forward from that point, if you don't mind. All the other stuff--trying to determine Their End Game, while they're busy executing their Current Game--is mud. If you take my saying that to mean I think you're a disinfo troll? Dude, you should try some "detachment"--not everything is just about YOU.

While it was/is clear that 'you used to laugh at CT' but now don't, I was, and still am, confused as to how that led you to hate disinfo trolls. To my thinking a person who voices CT is not the same as a disinfo troll. To my thinking they are distinctly separate things but even if I accepted that they were the same thing it still leaves me confused and uncertain. Admittedly I can be a bit thick at times but I still don't understand the why of your hate of disinfo trolls. I'm having trouble following the 'if/then', the, no longer laughing to the hate path is unclear.
In any case.
Let's say I had replied to your post about TPP with
'Climate change and its effects are all what matters'
'I used to laugh at short sighted buffoons, now I don't. Now you know why I hate clowns'
Would you wonder if I had just called you a clown? Would you wonder what the hell I was saying at all?
Then continuing, should you reply that yes climate change is important but we should also think about the TPP
and I replied with
'What? You think their going to use their power under TPP to take a spaceship to mars?'
Would you conclude that yes, I was calling you a clown? Would you start to feel annoyed?
And then finally should I wrap up by telling you what you should be concerned with, and how to show your concern, in a dismissive manner no less, AND even quote myself as an example of the 'proper' type of message, do you think maybe you'd say 'Enough of this crap!' as you busted out in laughter?

Sometimes we think our written words are clear when they are not.
Everyone has different concerns and messages, what's mud and what isn't mud is debatable.
Your thinking it's mud doesn't make it mud. It's not all about you.
I strive to discuss issues without denigrating the message or the messenger.
With a delight that can't be seen in this writing, I think you SHOULD do so too.

One more thing, To your 'staying on point' argument. This essay is about Hillary paying trolls. It has nothing to do with TPP.
And While I'm sure you will argue (rightfully so) that the flow of the discussion allows for the adding of TPP to the discussion. AND I WOULD AGREE COMPLETELY.
Looks to me like we should all 'stay on point' or we should all understand that a free flowing discussion allows for both off-topic items as well as topics related to the topic under discussion.

on some users over at TOP to see if they post any more diaries. I suspected them of being paid trolls over there. The last ones were before noon yesterday. This story broke in the late afternoon.

Without a D after her name, a S...load of paid trolls, a three billion dollar payday from speeches and pay-to-play hardball tactics, DWS, and poll "irregularities", Hillary would be as nakedly alone as Simon the hermit.

flagged a tip jar... before Kos new edict against flags went out too.
I like to think I was targeted because I was effective at skewering some Hillaroid lies, like her allegedly progressive position on abortion, which is exactly restrictive as Roe v. Wade allows it to be, i.e. it is the least support for Womens' rights she could have without calling for overturn of Roe V. Wade.

But it was a really good thing. Instead of mudwrestling trolls I get to phone bank real humans. Much better for me and the world.

It's Time to Acknowledge the Immense Power Twitter and Facebook Now Have in U.S. Elections

People turn to social media to get news they think isn't covered on traditional media, which is why they're more likely to believe what they see on Facebook and Twitter is true or probably true.

But, again, this isn't really the case. And that's not just because there's more information out there, and thus, a greater possibility that that information could be wrong.

No, it's because the corporations that control social media are corporations just like the corporations that control traditional media, and they're even less accountable to the public.

Hartmann points out that the First Amendment somewhat perversely grants unlimited powers of censorship to privately-owned media outlets of all kinds.

So broadcast MSM shapes our thoughts with hidden persuaders, and social media follows our every move and let's us see what they deem suitable. Really kinda scary!

But I listened to a webinar by a twit there begging tenure-track in the Communications Dept. Worst communicator I have seen talking about wording of push-poll questions. I was connected and chastised him, if he read that, I basically called him a stupid twit.

"Hartmann points out that the First Amendment somewhat perversely grants unlimited powers of censorship to privately-owned media outlets of all kinds."

I think when Hartmann wrote "This is obviously legal and protected by the First Amendment ..." he was saying that in his previous paragraph he said FB was thinking about what to do about Trump, that is in no way prohibited by the First Amendment -- which would only apply to government interference.

Private companies, or 'clubs', like the Democrats or Republican clubs, are not subject to the US Constitution.

I would hazard a guess that operatives of all sorts have been trolling that site for a while. I remember back in 2013 when the Snowden story broke. A lot of new members suddenly appeared to pound both Snowden and Greenwald. Just like that.

some seriously obvious shills over at c&l. i personally called out one of them for cut/pasting whole blocks of text from hillaryhq, a site run by a prominent clinton supporter from orangewater.

you know a paid shill when they post the exact same stuff (usually utter bs, sometimes just third-rate propaganda) every 20 comments or so, making sure their talking points are always up on the first page. frankly i'm kind of surprised i didn't get myself banned over there going off on them, but it was therapeutic. calling someone a "piece of shit shill" over at orangewater would probably arouse the flag brigade.

started to smell rats sometime around BS's announcement, switch to DK5 (all that blinding WHITE!), the weird new flagging system----I swear that I could not see that many flags, I guess they faded with uprates---but suddenly there were users who seemed to be able to see many more flags. And then the weekly polls. Then talking points, and new users.

Well, as someone said above, we got played. And we were right to be paranoid. I think I am much better at recognizing psy-ops now. But maybe not. I am in possession of more grains of salt now. Enough.
