Open Thread - 09-11-26 - The Day the World Stood Still

2001

That day, twenty five years ago, the America I grew up in changed forever.

It was September 11, I'll never forget it. I turned on the TV that morning before work to catch some news, CNN I think, the first tower was on fire, smoke billowing against the background. The announcer said a plane had hit it. I was wondering about the poor people that were in the building, especially the ones above the fire. I watched longer than I should and I needed to go to work. I reached to shut off the TV and then the second plane hit the second tower. I pulled my hand from the knob. I knew immediately that this wasn't coincidence, and I also knew, almost immediately, that it was a terrorist event. I stayed home from work, and like many across the country that fateful day, I was glued to the TV.

I was as cynical then, as I am now. I knew something was off from the beginning. The 60s had taught me a deeply ingrained distrust of the government, and even though I had no idea what really was going on, the surreal event I was witnessing sent my mind reeling into a cloud of doubt, and fear. Are we under attack? Was this a coup?

Then the towers fell, straight down, into their own footsteps.

The billowing smoke, moving in waves of heat and gas, black yellow and red, formed ominous and subliminal demonic effigies.

Live feeds of people running for their lives from falling debris. An all consuming cloud of smoke absorbing victims like a toxic desert sandstorm.

Tales of horror. Tales of heroism. Body counts. Eye witness accounts.

Endless reporters, endless talking heads, endless questions, endless theories.

Endless days and nights of news coverage. The same scenes over and over.

Endless trauma, both personal and societal.

All are images burned into the watchers psyche, forever it seems.

As the world stood still that day.

But that was only the start.

Then came the Patriot Act.

War on the mind.

Geopolitical war.

And a broken nation, lead by the specter of fear.

2026

Twenty five years later, and with twenty five years of retrospection at my back, I believe there are dots that connect 9/11/2001 to other events in modern history.

In my estimation, the roots of this day go back some seventy nine years prior, shortly after World War Two. Dallas in November 1963, the conflict in Vietnam, and the covid pandemic also act as milestones in this timeline. Assuredly, there were many major and minor events interposed among these milestones, that all together form a linear procession that leads us to the precarious position we find ourselves in at this particular point in human history.

What are some of the common denominators?

  • Endless trauma.
  • Psychological scarring.
  • Behavior modification.
  • Societal conditioning.
  • Indoctrination.

Are the dots I'm connecting coincidental or predetermined? You be the judge. The manipulation is obvious to me.

A reflective look over our shoulders reminds us that the past preludes the future. As today, we wait, for whatever fate blows our way and the next consequential dot falls in line.

QMS's picture

@JtC
these past 25 years - authoritarianism, dystopia, GWOT, loss of rights, financial failing due to
endless wars and legislative gridlock. Of course the citizens united ruling didn't help anyone
but the ruling elites. Oh woe. One can only hope the downhill slide eases up a bit.
Thanks for the OT!

Zionism is a social disease

@QMS
It's hanging in the air, my friend, another big one. The time is right and they're growing impatient.

I think the timeline leads to an ultimate destination, and we're getting close to the end game.

But, in the end, I think their plan will fail, because I don't think humanity will accept the shit they want to dish out.

Too many people are waking up and want to get off of the train.

from 1963 onward. Any situation, any decision between politics,business and the wealthy on one side and on the other, the people, us, always went against us. Every crisis, real or manufactured was used to expand surveillance and bureaucracy on us 99%, with that data increasingly porous between government and business. AI will be their near perfect machine to accomplish close to total control over us.

Notice that there is no moral code, no 3 laws of robotics built in to AI. If there is a famine, should we grow more food, or get rid of excess mouths to feed? For the wealthy there's always an upside. Raise prices on all food, get into the mass burial biz, scarf up vacant land cheap for bigger estates. For us, not so much. And who's pushing for more AI?

@Snode
like the end game, doesn't it? Total control, and AI may afford them that opportunity.

But what if it's all smoke and mirrors and AI is purposely being touted as the be all-end all to shepherd us into their latest effort to retain their relevancy?

@JtC AI is just a tool. Capitalism is a tool. It used to be a glorified accounting system, but with the powerful writing rules and clauses to benefit themselves at our expense, it's what we have now. AI will make it easier for the wealthy to make instantaneous decisions to add and protect their wealth. There may be baby ai for the masses (just $9.99/ month + all your data), but the AI with the most horsepower will be owned by the rich and powerful, and their servant, the government. I think us 99% will just be chess pieces on a game board.

Also, thanks for the OT.

We ought to figure out a secret handshake to make sure we're talking to people. (looks up from keyboard, thinks uh-oh)

as the individual using them.

I'm waiting for the first AI president, or, heck, lets just skip the president and make AI a universal God. I'm pretty sure that's already being worked on.

Let's use the multi-grip handshake from the 60s. AI will never be able to figure that one out, heh.

Glad to meet you, brother. Oh, by the way, are you real?

I'm sure it's only a coincidence about the date 911, the emergency phone number. Also the anniversary of the Pinochet coup against Salvador Allende. I didn't recognize that until I read Shock Doctrine.

My experience and reaction were similar to yours JtC. Because of some earlier experience in life, I was quite suspicious as the building collapses had the appearance of demolitions rather than multiple structural failures from aircraft collisions. My family is from the greater NYC region. I think it was my brother who had the worst experience because he worked right across the river in or or near Jersey City. I vaguely recall visiting the office there once, although I can't remember the exact location. You could see the lower Manhattan skyline easily. On 911, at some point he became aware of the disturbing events in progress and could see them outside. The pall of smoke was frightening, the rumblings of the building collapses were all quite audible to him.

He told me there was no transportation allowed across the Hudson. Thinking perhaps a war had started he wanted to get home with his family asap. I'm guessing he took some kind of boat across the Hudson, then walked a great distance, and then walked across the Manhattan bridge, he did say that, I recall. He somehow got to Jamaica station and took the LIRR home. He was quite shaken, and he was never the same again, mentally. Although out on Long Island, I know my mother was also shaken because she had grown up in Brooklyn and was very much an NYC person. When I expressed my "theories" on what had happened, she became very upset, so I never said anything again about it.

I met two other people who were lower Manhattan survivors. One was a skeptic, he was right there when it happened. Exposure to the smoke and debris permanently disabled him. The other reacted like my mom.

Was it after this "conspiracy theory" became the go to dismissive term?

@soryang
lived in New York at the time and she wrote a letter, which I read, to her dad about the experience and it pretty much mirrored your brother's impressions. She was a good writer and made the visuals quite vivid.

I lived out in the country at the time and I remember taking my dog for a walk and how surreal and quiet it was with no planes in the sky. And then, I saw a group of planes flying eastward. In retrospect it was probably the Bush entourage that whisked him away to safety that day. That was after he finished reading the upside down children's book to a class of young students, of course.

There were so many explicable things that happened that day that defy any logical explanation.

I was a skeptic from the get-go.

Thanks, soryang.

that TPTB want us to feel off balance, overwhelmed, helpless and divided. Hence, Trump and all his antics, lies and outrageousness. But we have so much power to defy them through critical thinking and understanding the quantum realities of our connection to each other and to the universe as a whole. They can put in place all kinds of technology to try to control outcomes, including possibily destroying life as we know it, but we are part of something greater. I don't think it takes much to destroy evil. It's weak link is that love and connection is so much stronger. If it weren't, disinformation, lies, manipulation and propaganda wouldn't need to be in frenzied high drive, 24/7. C99% plays an important role in countering their lies and exposing their absurdity and vacuity. Thank you.

@crescentmoon
you are echoing what I've been saying for some time now.

I think the fatal flaw in the plan is the underestimation of human nature and the desire for free will.

If we do not comply the plan will fall apart.

Thank you, crescentmoon.

a hotel near JFK International Airport. Holiday Inn, maybe? At any rate, I struck up a conversation with this guy at the bar. Henry. He was a retired firefighter. Out of the blue, he described his day at work on 9/11. He said he was ordered to go set up firetrucks and ambulances in a street that had been closed to traffic. Nobody knew why they were there, or why the street had been closed to traffic. A couple of hours later, they discovered the reason. They had a short and direct route to the Towers. Under his breath, he told me not to believe the official story of the attack, and never trust the government.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981

@on the cusp
there are many similar reports from that day that have been suppressed.

Remember the British TV reporter, the BBC I think, that reported the collapse of one of the towers 20 minutes before it happened? I have a video of that broadcast on a computer out in the shed. I need to retrieve that hard drive.

Even under his breath, your firefighter friend spoke to the truth.

I had started a comment, a long one, just like that, when all the power went out. It was either the end of the world or PG&E. Just my luck it was the latter, but we had some time critical early morning stuff to do, so we went and did that and came back and the power was on, but my 'puter was off and my nearly finished comment was nowhere to be found when I got it back up and running again.

It was west coast time out here and I don't know when ot what I found outm how, or whEre I was, but at some point I found out and either found a TV or a computer news feed and watched for a while. My first thoughts and reactions were pretty much as follows:

"Well, looks like our turn; we're finally gonna find out what the rest of the world has been going through for all these years. Hey, WAIT! Reichstag Fire??" In time I came to conclude that it probably wasn't Reichstag fire unless very deep, complex, multi-conspirator with proxies and patsies aplenty; but that they would, were, and did use it as if it were the Reichstag fire, the same playbook, war on civil liberties, fear and hate mongering, an arguably unprovoked, unnecessary and, in the end, pointless war against Afghanistan and a clearly unprovoked, illegal war of aggression against Iraq. Wheels within wheels, war crimes by the dozem, the war lovers going crazy in public and the whole uniparty holding a lovefest involving the more flawed logic and reasoning I'd seen in a long time.

Things managed to go downhill from there, What happened after happened after and here we are, as a nation and polity, seemingly not really any wiser.

be well and have a good one

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
