Sail Boston
This week is the culmination of the 250th anniversary of the
signing of the Declaration of Independence celebration in Boston.
An international fleet of historic Tall Ships are gathered for a sail around
the harbor and exhibitions of the various ships in surrounding piers.
I counted 44 on display for the public. More may be anchored out.
The gathering includes Gorch Fock (Germany), Sagres (Portugal), INS Sudarshini (India),

Have had a few make port calls locally in Newport and New Bedford.

IIRC, the Elyssa led the flotilla in the New York harbor during the Bicentennial celebrations. She is old, but still floating.

What an impressive gathering
We flew into New York for the 200th anniversary and got to see all the tall ships as we landed. Was impressive indeed. The Elissa is still a working boat and will take people out for a short sail from Galveston, Texas harbor. Have been to Galveston and seen her up close. Is impressive. While we were there she was down for repairs so we did not get to go for a sail.
While in New York or the 200th, we spent our time on Long Island with an Italian family that had been there forever. Not quite sure of date but Italian was the main language spoken. Did get to watch the grandmother make homemade lasagna which was a very interesting event for someone who was just beginning her cooking career!
Life is what you make it, so make it something worthwhile.

Elissa, but skipped the sailing because of my sea sickness problem. I do have a belaying pin I bought at the gift shop. It was already mounted and ready to hang on the wall.

Along the ship's rail, there were mounted pin bases at the cap rail level
for the sailors to cinch (or belay) rigging lines to check pay-outs. They
were tapered, so one could pop it out to release tension and ease the line.
Fun stuff, all of this nautical jargon. Say a sail was flapping, the bosun would
order 'belay the port midden sheet'. It could then be led to a winch, pull the pin
and crank it in. No more luffing. Happy are tight sails. When you have lofted 30
sails, it becomes a constant process. What with shifting winds and a wandering
helmsman (the nut behind the wheel) it is an adventure in its own right.

turn them down to a specified taper and there you have it.
Authentic ones will have rope burns and a dark patina.

When I was a kid a Spanish training ship of the tall ship type visited San Diego and my dad somehow finagled for the family to meet some of the crew and officers. She was berthed, iirc, on the Embarcadero just a few yards in front of the Star of India which made things extra cool.
All of San Francisco's collection of tall ships are temporarily stashed in Vallejo while the Hyde Street pier is repaired, and there is a privately owned brigantine in Sausalito, the Matthew Turner, but she isn't on the list of Boston attendees, so I assume she is still here.
I discovered by accident that there are a lot of "working" sailboats, both fore and aft and square rigged, especially brigantine types in the Galapagos. They work os tour and dive boats and use the "trades" to minimize fuel costs.

One of my friends was a sailor
He was from Rhode Island. Unfortunately, he died years back. He was an expert sailor but he didn't have his own. Friends would seek him out to crew their boats when they wanted to sail, whether just casually or for an event. He told me he sailed in the America's cup, once. His friends were kind enough to let me sail with them once out of St. Petersburg into the Gulf of "America." I think I had one other experience like that with him as well. The other time, I recalled seeing Hulk Hogan in his overpowered offshore racing boat, in an inlet. I have some old photos of us onboard somewhere, one with moi at the helm which meant they were just stroking me for some free drafts later.
I sailed once in Gitmo harbor with an academy graduate on a very small boat.

Ms. So has been watching this couple learning how to sail about Europe. They were just travel youtubers but then decided to buy a sailboat. I think they had a mishap or two. Last I heard they made it to the Netherlands. The English subtitles are pretty good if you watch it on youtube. I thought the inland waterway navigation was interesting.
