At the farm completing my bombing campaign for the weekend. Underground facilities are being decimated in numerous areas.
The bombing runs (smoke bombs) will continue until those varmit moles are exterminated for good.
No quarter given.
Mrs. Fudd chased a rabbit out of the garden this morning, muttering "Silly Whabbit" all the way.
We have a resident doe inhabiting a 10 x 20 ft. canopy/carport. And two other does, each with twin fawns, running around day and night. One of them ate a new butterfly bush we planted to draw Monarchs.
Will probably head home to suburbia today and restock food and clean work clothes.
Actually, we could use a rest and catch up on the news and E2 her soaps.
So thread is open, watcha got going on

Good morning e1, I note you said moles and not gophers. That
is a problem. Gopher predators abound but we have, in our infinite wisdon, eliminated most of the natural mole predators from the wild. Legend has it that if one can access their tunnels at a few points, one cn load then with dry ice and then seal them up.. The dry ice will sublimate, filling the tunnels with CO2 and asphyxiating the little monsters (that allegedly works for gophers too). I've ofter wondered ifa goodly number of cherry bombs throughout their runs, preferable all detonated at the same time or nearly so, would successfully concuss the little monsters to extremis.
Our neighborhood was beset with gophers, and, eventually, feral cats which have pretty much eliminated the gophers. Onf of the raccoons that frequent our yard at night also bagged one on camera. The fact that they come up out of their digs leaves them vulnerable.
Among the front page items in the guardianis the fact that some folks have found a way to cheat at cricket. A sure fire tip-off that it is a Brit paper if there ever was one.

Neighbor informs there are no golphers here. I imagine that is a result of the resident owl family, prolific eagle and hawk presence in the air, and cougar/coyote on the ground.
Have seen only one black cat that travels across the property to frequent the creek.
But why aren't the moles subject to the same predation?
Neighbor says putting dog hair down in the hole drives them elsewhere, and I will use that in the garden itself as I don't want to use the poison smoke bombs anywhere near crops.
Will have to visit a dog grooming shop as I have no dog.
Won't that be an interesting conversation. (Do you prefer poodle or Rottweiler?).
They have already undermined my primitive water tower I use for irrigation and it was leaning precariously.
They haven't killed anything in the garden yet. But I don't know what to look for.
Thanks for the post.

Sweeping the grass today
.
Whenever the grass gets thick and long, when I mow
I'm left with rows of clippings. Too lazy to rake, so tow
around the sweeper collecting the trimmings and add to
the mulch pile. They are dried out now and the rains are
coming in tonight. Clean & tidy. Good luck with the moles
and thanks for the OT!

Never thought of that
Sweeping the cut grass up.
Bought a pull behind the tractor sweeper last summer for $75. It was $475 new and it looked like it was never used.
When I got it to the farm and tried it out, the hopper kept coming off. After looking closely, the hopper arms were installed upside down and once corrected worked perfectly.
No wonder he sold it for cheap. Duh.
I used it for leaves, but I guess it would work for cut grass too.
Thanks for the tip off.

it kept skipping over the grass. So I built a platform

wheels. Works as intended now. Mods R-Us. In the

Sadly lacking in today's population.
Will keep that in mind when I try it.
Thanks.

Good afternoon, e1!
I never had mole or gopher problems. Deer? Wild hogs? Raccoons? Hell, yeah!
A doe and her spindly little fawn were passing through the pasture this weekend. Fawn would lag behind, then gallop in place a few times, then get traction and move forward on the run. It did that 3 times, like it was just learning how to get from Point A to Point B.
If it were a horse trained for dressage, cantering in place is called "passage".
I finished up one of my last family law cases this morning, finished up a probate case this afternoon, and semi-retirement is edging up closer and closer. More time at home deer watching sounds great!
Fun OT, friend!

I believe that Lindsay Graham's brutal sanctions bill just
passed. China has already put us on notice not to pass it, this betokens a more serious trade wr than we are likely to be ready for.

Yesterday dark clouds
...and thunder all day, some lightning. Some rain, not that much. After it stopped raining, I walked to the mailbox. On the way back heard a clumping noise, and turned to see a gator about 5 foot long, crossing the street with only three legs, one in the front, and two in the rear. The clumping noise was the sound of his jaw hitting the pavement after each step. He was about two hundred yards from the big retention pond, it appeared exhausted. I imagined the handicapped gator was moving through the construction area to the next smaller retention pond, another 200 yards away. He stopped moving right in the street and took a breather. Never saw that before. I know there is one larger gator in the area that I had seen once before. It's the ones you don't see...
We had a mole problem for a while. It got worse after the neighbor had a pool put in, they regraded his yard, so they all moved to our property. It got worse after the first flood, which no doubt killed a lot of them, but they made a come back. Later, I had to have the large trees in the yard, removed for fear they would fall on the house, which had happened before once in an earlier hurricane. The owl and racoon who was often there disappeared. So that again helped the moles alot. After the second flood I noticed them making a comeback again.
Quite a few news items coming out of Japan. They've been having widespread tremors and earthquakes from Kyushu to Hokaido. They range from 5.7 to 7.1 according to one Korean news report I saw. Quite a bit of property damage and injuries reported. I didn't hear of any deaths so far, so that's the good news.
So the first woman prime minister supported male only inheritance for the imperial role. Taro Aso, from the LDP, who is in his eighties is related indirectly to the imperial family, his sister married a prince. Apparently, he lobbied politicians to go for a male adoptee. Is he talking about himself?

Haven't really had a problem with moles
until the last couple of years. Have been watching the mounds come from out of the forested areas around me and slowly move toward the fenced garden. Now they are inside it.
Will keep at it.
I keep the grass cut low all around the garden to discourage small varmits from traversing in the open. It definitely keeps the field mice down.
Thanks for the Japan update.
