Hubris done well.

open thread_105.jpg

Had a great family campout over the 4th of July weekend, fun and food for all. Neighbors had a live band that we could hear quite well hundreds of feet away. And the locals shot off fireworks till 1:30 in the morning.
Heh, quiet time is 4 am at our farm/campground.
Smores, popcorn, and Der Wienerschnitzel chili cheese dogs around a blazing campfire kept everyone happy and full. Oh yeah, and a little beer.
July 4th is notable for American independence from King George, it's also the day in 1945 the Red Army of Soviet Russia gifted the American troops with what became West Berlin.
The Red Army had been there since May 2nd accepting the surrender from the German Army.
I guess the Aryan nation of Germany was not Master Race enough to hold off the barbarian hordes from the east and west. But they certainly thought they were hot shit for a decade or two.
I get the same sense with America today, flinging around words like "exceptional", "indispensable", and "Superpower". Ignored is that we haven't won a war since !898 in Cuba and the Philippines.
I see the same arrogance and extreme hubris today in Washington DC and all across America.
A big fall is coming.
Thread is open. Are you bursting with pride with what America has become?

Sounds like you had a fun weekend!
We didn't hear a single firecracker go off the entire holiday.
I am dropping in this article that gives a timeline and description of every war we have fought since our country's inception.
https://consortiumnews.com/2026/07/06/two-and-a-half-centuries-of-war-a-...
It left out our project in Venezuela.
No mention of our war crimes in Cuba, either.
Besides, we haven't declared war on Iran, so it doesn't count, does it?
Thanks for the OT, friend.

"We didn't hear a single firecracker go off the entire holiday".
Holy firecracker, Batman. You must live in a county that bans fireworks.
The city of Vancouver, Wa. has also banned fireworks. But the county (Clark) still allows them.
I could actually get along without them, but that would be unfair to all the youngans that come after me.
Some traditions will be hard to give up.
Thanks for that link. It is amazing innit?

@earthling1 the drought area of the Texas Hill Country. Tall buffalo grass, just waitin' for a spark.
Lots of towns ban outdoor noise, even music, between 10 pm and 8 am.
Fine with me, although the dance halls and bars are allowed to play music, which inspires one to have some Shiner Bock or Lone Star Red beer.

to live here. Seems the 'important' people only represent
their own interests, not so much anyone else. Here we are,
a failing empire, and the best those folks at the top of the food
chain can come up with is "more for me" and "you are not my problem".

Sounds like your fourth was fun. S'mores over a campfire at 4 AM
is a great way to celebrate anything! Thanks for the OT!

errands. This is turning into a very busy month. Tons of firecrackers on the night of the fourth, even though they are illegal and mucho stupid given high fire risk here.

The US President suborned the head of FIFA to get an illegal special benefit for the US soccer team which then got waxed anyway. Heh.

That's a great Consortium article that otc presented, but highly condensed. The US has engaged in roughly 500 military operationssince 1776, 11 of which were declared wars. A more comprehensive list can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_United_States_military_operations. A problem with all these lists is the pro-US gloss given to everything. Pike's expedition "accidently" wandered into mexico, probably (certainly) no accident, and they were "foraging" meaning stealing from the Mexican populace living there. Many incidents such as in the Falklands and Korea, sShanghai, Japan, and the like were to punish or seek relief from the locals from perceived grief given to US ships, sailors, crews, etc. which wre really responses to bad actions by said US persons, overfishing local waters, using force to bring about "trade" and "trade agreements" and the like.

the Orange Fart Cloud will do to get the result of that game overturned? You know that he's making lots of phone calls... Retroactive red cards for all who dare oppose the USA!

I have to admit that I allowed myself a tight, sardonic little smile when I heard the final score of the game. It doesn't make me a bad person, at least to my way of thinking.

it wouldn't matter anyway. I've never heard of any of the USMNT players until the run up to the world cup. I didn't know who was on Belgium's team, but it was European. After the game I got a peak at their roster, 2 named immediately jumpd out at me; Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. I've only quite recently been paying attention to soccer, and only mildly so, but shit, even I know those two, and they got the goal keeper from freaking Real Madrid, plus guys from Arsenal, Man City and all like that. That's the thing about Europe and South America, you don't know who will be on those national teams but a lot of them will be from long time soccer power houses. The USMNT wasn't going to go too far whatever the case, not with Argentina, France, Spain, and Norway still in the action.

Seeking to take advantage of Khamenei’s funeral the decide to send tankers using the southern path closer to Oman. The idea to lower petroleum prices.

How dumb do they think people are? I've been watching videos produced in Taiwan, Australia, India, etc., going on about the so called Chinese "violation" of the nuclear free zone in the South Pacific.

In addition to the US firing ICBMs into the Kwajalein missile range in the Pacific on a fairly regular schedule, (two ICBM tests were fired into the range earlier this year), we have the AUKUS agreement, whereby port and maintenance facilities will be provided to US and UK nuclear powered submarines.

In addition, the US promised recently to provide the Australian navy with 3 in service Los Angeles class SSNs. Doesn't sound like much of a nuclear free zone to me.

Australia will receive three operational U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarines as part of a revised AUKUS agreement, announced at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on May 31, 2026.

The Chinese JL-3 fired into the South Pacific wasn't nuclear powered and didn't have anything but a dummy warhead. But to just make the hypocrisy of the war industry press absolutely clear, check out the link below-

US submarines carrying nuclear weapons could dock in Australia despite ban, Senate told

Defence secretary appears to contradict previous assurances from Penny Wong that only conventionally armed submarines will visit Australian ports under Aukus deal

US submarines carrying nuclear weapons could dock at Australian bases, defence officials have told the Senate, and the Australian government and people would not know.

Senate estimates heard fierce debate over whether US Virginia-class submarines – set to “rotate” through Australian ports from 2027 as part of the contentious Aukus agreement – could carry nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are prohibited in Australia.

Defence department officials told senators there was “no impediment” to submarines armed with nuclear weapons visiting Australia, insisting that any such visit would not breach Australian or international law.

The US maintains a policy of “strategic ambiguity” around its nuclear deployment and it refuses to confirm or deny whether aircraft or seagoing vessels capable of carrying nuclear weapons are, in fact, carrying a nuclear warhead.

So the Australians have the option of having nuclear powered submarines in the fleet which the article acknowledges have potential to be refitted for nuclear cruise missiles. They also provide port facilities for US naval warfare combatants who remain "ambiguous" about whether they have nuclear weapons on board.

So heads, I win, tails you lose, China. Isn't that clever? Shhhh!

The international hype about this is over the top.

Thanks for the EBs Joe!
