Saturday Open Thread - 5/30/26: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people!

I hope you have a nice weekend planned!

I wrote about my neighbor/client/friend who spent her who 86 years of life ropin' and riden', and cattle ranching. Her published obit quoted her saying "The best seat I ever had was my saddle".

I will attend her viewing this afternoon.

But days later, another neighbor/friend/client, age 40, died by suicide. Maybe. She was thrilled about her son overcoming his drugs use and quitting school to run away, only to return home, great positive change, set to graduate 4 days prior to her suicide by hanging. The reformed son, her pride and joy, found her hanging in the closet. Oh, and her daughter's wedding is this week.

Now, if you think that is somehow "off", you start reminding me of me. It is possible her depression from separating from her second husband sent her to the dr. for SSRIs. They have a way of repairing depression by sending you to suicide.

We shall see.

I was her divorce attorney back in the day, and got her custody of her son and daughter. I would never have gone in if I thought she would ever hurt her kids. Yet another justification for me to walk away from family law, which I have this month. Her kids, especially her son, will never be able to forget this. Their lives are forever diminished, if not ruined.

As for good news, the fledgling red headed woodpecker finally figured out that in order to pick at the feeder and get a seed, peck at the holes, not the mesh wire. He is not retarded! I am so proud!

As for Cornyn and Paxton, I hate Paxton, hate Cornyn more. But, I am no fan of Talarico and think he is a nut. Under vote, come November.

From my college days: ( Missed it live...my dr. said I was to ill to risk attending Woodstock.)

So, what is up with you folks? This is an open thread, open to all info you wish to share with your friends on the site.

With that said, let 'er rip!

Well, folks, it is all I can do to not take blame for screwing up a kid's life after discovering his Mom's body. Everyone in town liked her. Nobody saw this coming. I wish she had hired another attorney to handle her case back in the day.
They'd be asking themselves these questions instead of me. Yet another reason to retire.
So, friends, your turn!

@QMS SSRIs are becoming yet another huge scandal in Big Pharma. Anyone who takes the time to read all of the known adverse effects listed right on the pharmacy packet, can see on that very last page, "can cause suicidal ideation". I heard that her separation from her husband caused her to be very depressed. Maybe the police and coroner combed through her medicine cabinet and the autopsy will also determine if drugs were involved.
The community is already tired of speculation. We want answers.
We also want to see the Epstein Files. We are a curious population, aren't we?
Enjoy your weekend, friend!

@on the cusp having a responsible period of time for events which effect others lives is to come to the realization we have no control of the choices and events which come afterwards.

I am sorry for the situation. Suicides are the most disruptive types of death in my experience. The finger pointing at the who may have contributed by missing signs or contributing to a hopeless situation is almost impossible to avoid. Those fingers we point at ourselves are the most damaging. I hope her children are able to get past the shock and don't let is consume them for the rest of their lives.

@studentofearth @studentofearth tI have a young friend who discovered his mother's body when she shot herself. The young man went certifiably nuts right on the spot, aand stays on the brink of suicide 15 yrs later.hat what I did back in time could have foretold the future.
I have a young friend who discovered his mother's body when she shot herself. The young man went certifiably nuts right on the spot, and stays on the brink of suicide 15 yrs later.
Another young friend discovered his suicided brother many weeks after his disappearance. He managed to stay sane, hold a good job, enter a marriage, but his personality changed in an instant. From country boy to city boy. From having friends to having no friends. From adoring his kids to being ashamed of them.
Another divorce/custody win I had was due to the wife having found the bodies of her brother and his wife after a murder/suicide. She is totally nuts, in and out of mental hospitals, a serious danger to herself and others.
I hope the son and daughter will not have their lives ruined by this. Even now, I am finishing up probate case for a sister/sole heir to her brother's estate. He took in an autistic kid to raise years ago. He recently did a murder/suicide. The sister did not see the bodies. A neighbor did. The neighbor packed up, left town, and none of her friends and family have any idea where she is.
I hope for a miracle. That's all I can do.

and often I have a very hard time telling who exactly is criticizing him this time. People don't usually have labels like far left or right on their atavar. Lots of genuine anger though, and lots of dislike.

A little digging usually reveals that I'm reading from a far right source and all the comments agreeing are also right nutters such as are commonly found online.

Mainstream Democrats also seem to dislike him but are quiet as he looks to win the Maine senate seat they need. I'm waiting for the hard left, and there is plenty there for them not to like. When asked about guns he replied he had some ARs. Not "an" not "a couple" but "some". he he. Platner also has spoken with the voice of a 4 tour infantryman, which can be a little rough around the edges.

Looking carefully at his background I don't see any there there. He does come from a family that has done well sporadically as have many New England families. That might well have filtered down to dad helping out with a mortgage or paying a years tuition at the prep school he dropped out of, but his mother sounds like a tie die wearing not very wealthy liberal, and that's where he grew up, a long way from his lawyerly dad.

I'd think "progressives" would find him distasteful but they haven't yet morphed over to more widespread hating as with Fetterman.

Interesting.

Ukraine continues along as it was, as does Russia.

@ban nock Platner has a few good talking points, and Susan Collins has made a total fool of herself for stating that soldiers who died in wars she authorized to accomplish regime change is their fault because they joined up voluntarily.
The SMO in Ukraine has heated up this week. I see that Putin has to walk a tightrope to win this operation without starting a war with Europe. Where did Ze and his cabinet go?
Platner gets a lot of criticism over a tattoo, although I do not know what the tattoo symbolizes.
I don't give two poops about Fetterman. I do not take him seriously since the only time he dresses appropriately is when Bibi comes to town.
I will keep skimming news headlines, see if this is a busy news day or intentionally calm to enhance some insider trading for those in the know.
Enjoy your weekend, sir!

The suicide sounds suspicious to me with graduation and wedding in the offing. Anyone have a grudge?

The world continues sitting on the fulcrum of power shifting east. The US is doing a pretty good job of alienating the majority of the world.

We're finally getting some rain, and have moved from drought to abnormally dry. Been sitting on the tractor trying to knock back the jungle. We caught rain at the festival last week as well. Decided to take and wash all the dirty clothes & sheets at the laundry mat to get it all done at once. To my surprise the fee for a single load is $10. Took three washers for all our stuff. How do poor folks get by? We were able to bring it all home and hang it outside to dry as it was the one dry day this week.

Enjoy your birds and wildlife. They know how to follow the patterns of life.

The Peace of Wild Things
by
Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives might be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Have a good weekend and thanks for the OT!

@Lookout The hanging deaths I run across in my law practice happen in limited circumstances.
Someone was murdered.
Someone killed themselves to avoid arrest.
Suicidal depression.
Accidental due to a masturbation gone wrong.
Her estranged husband is in such shock, he doesn't appear to be a legitimate suspect. Did she have a boy friend?
Her residence was treated as a crime scene for a few hours.
I had to take a load of laundry to the local washateria a few years ago. We needed an industrial size washer for a couple of heavy loads. We spent over $20. It also costs at least $10 to wash a vehicle at a car wash. Waxing is extra. Interior vacuuming is extra.
Poor people have no chance to thrive in this economy, friend, and it is getting worse for all of us every day.
The poem is just lovely. Colorful birds sitting in trees like Christmas ornaments. Spanish moss in lush green trees, gently swing in the breeze. The baby hare hopping about in the yard. I feel sad for people who live in a city. Their feet contact asphalt and concrete, yours and mine connect with the earth.
Enjoy your day, and if it rains, that is a real blessing for your holler!

client, but I find it unlikely that your long past involvement was remotely contributory. Introspection can be a good thing and can foster growth and self-awareness, but it can also lead one to unwarranted self-doubt, misguided fault finding,, and worse.

Generally, when reviewing events, whether participatory or not, it is important to remember that the experiment cannot be repeated. I cannot rewind and re-run last Wednesday omitting my decision to do that thing 'x' that may or may not have led or contributed to the occurrence of event 'y', so I will never know and I also will never know, if 'y' didn't happen, would that have worked out for the better or not. That is simply the way the world works. The butterfly effect is real, but also seemingly randomized and all the myriad inputs into each and every event of the day are gone and there is no do-over available.

Politics, bleagh. We have both a primary and a SPECIAL ELECTION for the now "retiring" representative for my district. I never liked him from day one of his first candidacy, though, to some extent, he wasn't as bad as I anticipated. We have a jungle primary and 40 some odd candidates for governator including a billionaire who promises to do a great many things for the benefit of the little folk and to rein in the corporations and ultra-wealthy and is spending gawd-awful amounts in trying to sell us on that idea. I have to turn in my ballot(s) within the next few days and really need to take a look at it but have well over 60 years of relatively full socio-political awareness. 1) Nobody running for anything really has my interests at heart. 2) Most who can and do propose initiatives and like that a) have ulterior motives b) get carried away c) lose track of what they were up to and d) are incapable of drafting language that will actually achieve their objective and also lack innumerable unforeseen but foreseeable consequences. 3) Whoever is not already bought soon will be. All of this was sufficiently common knowledge n my youth that it was taken for granted even in the funny papers, but folks no longer seem aware of any of it. What, for example is the value of a campaign promise? Everybody over the age of six used to know that those were special purpose lies, what happened to that awareness?

be well and have a good one

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

@enhydra lutris You are spot on in the analysis/over thinking /second guessing. My good friend won a custody case for her client a couple of years ago. A couple of months ago the Dad took his 12 yr old son and the son's 13 yr old pal kayaking. They all got caught in a rushing river and all drowned. None wore a life jacket. My friend did lay blame partly upon herself, but instead of self-doubt, she made the decision to never take on another custody case. I decided a couple of months ago to stop taking all family law cases. My depression about this horrible hanging death will pass, and will not happen in any future cases. Let AI handle them!

Why would a billionaire capable of funding all kinds of charities decide to enter government to to use tax dollars to help the poor? Did I just answer my own question?
Campaign promises are a special kind of lie. Politicians become unstable in their virtues and values as soon as they get dollar signs in their eyes.
My voting choices at the federal level is to vote for the one I hate the least. Spite voting, I suppose.
Well, enjoy your weekend, my friend, and don't let the house chores get ya down!

Acting upon obvious obfuscations is another can of bollixed BS.
I think most aware Americans realize campaign promises mean nothing
in the future application of effort to enact change. Words are like vapor.

Well, friend, I thank you for the video. I am having a lazy day, and have lots of time to watch it.
I will have to plan and cook my own meals this weekend. Hubby's diet restrictions ahead of his scope procedure on Monday is extreme food restriction today, broth only tomorrow, and none on Monday until the dinner meal. Weird. But then, cancer is weird.
I hope your garden is flourishing and that the weather is cooperating. I intend to spread coffee grounds on some bare spots in the yard. We removed a huge tree with a large spread, so the grass can now get sun and fill in those bare spots this summer with just a little effort.
Have a great weekend, dear friend!

@on the cusp already being harvested - asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, egyptian onions, mushrooms, parsley, sage and other herbs. The sunroom grapes were delicious this morning and thinking about the figs to come later in the year. Ground is still a little cold to plant most of the annual seeds. I always seem too busy to plant starts to extend the season. Every year a different excuse.

Today provides the opportunity to fix a favorite dish only you enjoy with no guilt. Take advantage of the opportunity. Thinking good thoughts for you both.

@studentofearth This friend had a huge fig tree and it produced a an abundance of figs annually. She found all kinds of recipes for figs, but the one that really floored me was figs topping a pizza! She added them to what would otherwise be a Margarete pizza.
I will eat some food hubby does not like especially, or that his digestive system doesn't tolerate. Chicken Alfredo sounds good. He restricts his dairy to hard cheeses and a small amount of butter.
Congrats on the produce!!!
