Friday Night Photos Mission Trails Mix Edition

Happy Friday everyone. Welcome to Friday Night Photos your once a week escape from the day to day insanity of the world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music or whatever else you find of interest that helps tune out the madness.

It was a good week this week. The weather has been pleasant. Mostly sunny and 70s. The price of gas and groceries didn't go up. That's a good thing. And I got out twice with the camera. The bird watching group went to Mission Trails Regional Park on Monday (tonight's photos) and the camera club went to the botanical garden yesterday for their annual spring orchid exhibit of which I have 3 dozen photos I need to edit for future editions of FNP.

Thought I’d stop by to say hi! I look at all your photos and others on Friday with interest and appreciation. Thank you for being so dedicated and documenting in beautiful and interesting ways where your camera takes you.

Is that a peony with the fluffy yellow centre? I noticed the other day that my neighbour's Peony tree had its first buds. The tree continues to bloom for 7 months, longer than anything else here, except for dandelions and canna lilies. Most of the natives are more particular and seasonal, with the exception of my three favourite trees, the Puriri, Nikau Palm, and Manuka, all of which have beautiful blooms on and off throughout the year.

Looking at your first photo of the Grosbeak, I first saw a bird with the longest and thinnest curved beak I've ever seen, until I realised what I was looking at ; ).

A mundane photo from the deck today, during full-on sunshine …

Tulips …

Cheers to everyone here and all over the site. See you later.

What a pleasant surprise. Hope all is well with you. Beautiful lighting on the Tulip and the sun and shadow patterns on the side of your house make the first photo anything but mundane. I don't know what type of flower that is in the last shot. A couple of members in the bird watching group called it the fried egg flower

I'll have mine sunny side up

The shadows on the side of the house are what caught my attention. I'm pleased, but not surprised that you noticed them.

Thanks for the fuller image of the flower. I wondered, and now I see that it is a Cosmos, one of my very favourite flowers for it's simplicity and brilliance. They are still flowering here at the moment.

We seem to share some common interests and botany ; ).

@janis b

picture on the screen and it told me it was a Matilija Poppy, aka Fried Egg Flower, native to SoCal and North Baja; largest flower of any plant native to CA with blooms measuring 4 to 8 inches in diameter. If SP can confirm size, I'd go with that since his companions came up with fried egg glower too.

BTW, we have over a dozen native poppies here plus literally hundreds of cultivated ones

Thanks for the appreciation, and for the Poppy identification.

Since I know how much you enjoy patterns, here is a close-up

and another for good measure

Great to see your posts, jb. Smile That flower looks like your usual painting-only-it's-actually-a-photograph. That one opening up looks like a tulip. Hope you are doing well. Sp, your photos are looking good, especially the bug ones. I really like that blue dragonfly looking critter. Looking forward to your orchid pics. Smile Speaking of orchids, I have four healthy ones and the two smelly ones (like coconuts) are blooming. My poinsettia was transplanted a couple of months ago. It needed a bigger pot so it's a happy camper now. Unreal--5 healthy plants?! I used to just look at one, and BOOM: DOA. Anywho, I'm starting to ramble so....Rec'd!!

The blue Dragonfly looking critter is a Damselfly. There are over a dozen species of blue Damselflies that all look very much alike. I believe the one I posted is a Spin-tipped Dancer.

I have no memory of mission trails from my youth, probably wasn't a real thing back then, but when I visit my sis in La Mesa we often wander out there for a ramble and a pic nic.

I don't think Mission Trails got real popular until they closed Father Junipero Serra trail to vehicle traffic and built the visitor center. They do have a small camp ground by Kumeyaay Lake but its only open on the weekends.
