Saturday Open Thread - 4/11/26: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good friends!
To begin, I ran across meme. Young black man asking, "How do I tell someone, "F'ck you" in a more polite way?
One response was from an elderly white woman. "Well, in Texas we say, 'Bless your heart.'"
Friends, I have stood beside attorneys making nutty arguments, said the same thing to them at the bench.
The critters I spotted this week were deer, squirrels, hawks, and rabbits. We had rabbits under the house, in the yard, until the stray cat decided to stay here once in a while. He shows up, eats a meal or two, leaves for a week.
Well, some good news, sort of, is that the usual grocery items I bought last week and replenished this week were the same price. With that said, I think about food shortages, and prepping for it. Read one article about how we might be eating beans and rice for long periods, and how to inject some protein and flavor: bullion. Just a thought. I bought some today. And bought some spices we use all the time. And salt. Never run out of salt.
This is an open thread, open to anything any of you wish to share with your friends here. I will post anything that comes across my radar as the day passes. Please, do the same, friends.

@on the cusp Something I just bought
Something I just bought to make food last longer, as that will be important, was a new vacuum sealer. Been using it on fresh veggies and the broccoli last a good week longer in the fridge. When the veggies start getting very expensive or stop being available this may help. The times, they are a changing...
Hey, hst!
We bought one a couple of years ago. A great way to store fresh meat in the freezer!
We have to learn ways to sustain ourselves, friend. I believe "preppers" are thought of as doomsday sort of crazies and hoarders. I think of food storage as proper planning when food supplies are clearly going to be interrupted. I have also bought things like tweezers and can openers, simply because they are essentials, made in another country, then shipped here. My biggest concern is lack of energy at the factories where these items are manufactured.
At any rate, thanks for the really good tip.
Enjoy your weekend, friend!

hey, good morning
Found this feel good story this AM to share -
Anonymous
I was in line at the grocery store when the guy in front of me asked the cashier, “Do you guys hire?” She looked up. “Yeah, we’re always looking. Apply online.” He nodded. Paid for his ramen and left. Something about the way he asked made me follow him to the parking lot.
“Hey, you looking for work?” He turned. Surprised. “Yeah. Got laid off two months ago. Applications everywhere. Nothing yet.” I could see his car. Backseat full of stuff. Blanket. Pillow. He was living in it...
“What kind of work you do?” “Warehouse. Forklift certified. Anything really. I just need something.”
Pulled out my phone. Called my buddy who manages a distribution center. “You still hiring?” Put the guy on the phone. They talked. My buddy said, “Come in tomorrow. Ten AM. Bring your forklift cert. We’ll try you out.”
The guy hung up. Stared at me. “Did that just happen?” “Yeah. Show up on time. Work hard. It’s yours.” He grabbed my hand. Shook it hard. “I’ve applied to a hundred places...
Nobody calls back. You just… made one call. Why?”
“Because I’ve been unemployed. I know how it feels when nobody gives you a shot. Now you got one. Don’t waste it.”
Got a text two weeks later. Unknown number. “It’s the grocery store guy. Still working. Got my first paycheck. Getting a place next week. Thank you for making that call. You changed everything.”
Every now and then you run across something to help in the belief of the human spirit.
Attending a 'zoom' memorial service in Montreal for my cousin today. Otherwise, we are
experiencing a descent springish day (with a heaping helping of wind).
Sun and temps above 50 is OK!
Enjoy your Texas time.
Zionism is a social disease
Good afternoon, Cap'n!
That story about the stranger helping out a homeless man was so heartwarming. Let's don't give up on humanity just yet.
I admit I reacted like a real bitch yesterday as I watched an elderly woman crossing the highway while pushing a grocery cart filled with everything she owned. My first thought was "what kind of drugs is she on?" I immediately felt shame for that thought. Who am I to judge at a glance that her situation was her own damn fault? Meanwhile, for months we have seen a young man living in his truck in a Walmart parking lot. He is young, healthy looking, often holds up a sign that says, "Looking for work", and I can't think of a single place to suggest to him, nor a single person for him to call. Businesses around here aren't hiring. They are laying off employees.
I hope the memorial service brings closure to you and your family, friend.

Perhaps this is only a rhetorical question
Why is NATO in Iraq? What does that
have to do with protecting Europe? Is
Iraq threatening the EU? Don't think so.
Quite a stretch at the very least IMO.
And what does Iraq have to do with Iran?
Crazy logic. Forcing Iraq closer to Iran will
be the outcome of US bombing Iraq. Nuts.
Zionism is a social disease
Turn of the century (20th) imperialism crap
They always try to disguise it as something it isn't. A fight against despots, terrorism, etc. Before the unipolar moment, it was the fight against communism, blah, blah, blah.

Heh. "Kuwait(tm)" (Texaco) was slant drilling into
Iraqi oil fields. Iraq kept trying to get them to stop and kept asking us to make them stop with no luck. Finally fed up Saddam H asked the US (M. Albright) if it was OK if he used force and she, in essence, said yes, the US didn't care what he did. (Texaco, however, ca red very much) He invaded, and then we used that as grounds to go after Iraq but we didn't stay or keep the Iraqi oil. This was deemed to be a major blunder so we used 911 as an excuse to go back and while we were at it grab some Syrian Oil (and a chunk of Syria) too. We claim that it is all about ISIS, but ISIS, like Al Qada in all of its forms, is our creation and we have no real problem with them if they don't mess with our oil.
be well and have a good one
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
NATO — they are the 'White-Hat' NAZIS
The Early 20th Century Fascists. The Cold War Mongers. The Latter-Day NAZIS.
It's a fairly well-established fact that NATO was designed under NAZI influence — and and led by a procession of off-the-shelf psychopaths. (See, Neocons, Zionists). Their vision... the goal that drives them, is to suppress communism and promote capitalism; achieve massive wealth with low taxes for the Few; and establish a Cash-and-Carry' democracy to to introduce legislation (like the draft) that the People must accept and obey. Their corrupt goals have had moderate success for the Elite. But when they run out of money and missiles, they will be finished. However, I personally believe it will take the final passing of the Boomer generation, and most of GenX, before Western culture can rid itself of the horrendous Neocon insanity. It is not at all necessary that the economies of the West be degraded and broken — by the psychopaths bad decisions on their way to oblivion — but I fear the hot polloi may passively allow that to happen happen. All they have ever known is bait and switch democracy. Not Citizen Authority striving for consensus and win-win solutions.

Prediction
Put this off due to other distractions for some time, but I'd been meaning to find an appropriate passage documenting the insight of Hannah Arendt who wrote the Origins of Totalitarianism. It didn't take much searching -
Hannah Arendt (1944)

This seems to be a major sub-theme today
Not only trumpet, but the zionists have painted
themselves into a corner from which only failure
will be the outcome, one way or another. They are
unable to bomb their way out of this bind. The present
attempts to 'negotiate' an off-ramp may be fruitful if only
the zionists cease their peculiar mission of control. Doubt
that is in the cards, as Iran obviously understands. So, what
is left? Talks go nowhere and the media will try to spin it as
a success. This whole process is getting mighty old.
Zionism is a social disease
Just stop?
Let it go, walk away. Cut your losses while one still can? Ordinarily this would be the wise choice. That Israel is a nuclear power presents risks in this situation, that one should resolve behind the scenes. The problem here, I think, is that the actors have ulterior motives, more related to criminal justice and domestic politics than international affairs.
己所不欲,勿施于人。
That is obviously the best option.
Unfortunately, the US is irrational and will not
consider 'smart' solutions to their bind. Power
based politics rule in the minds of the puppets.
Zionism is a social disease
Good afternoon, soryang!
Thanks for sharing Arendt's analysis.
You are spot on about Trump and Bibi having some personal legal problems and about the only strategy they have left is to postpone the legal proceedings until the conflict ends. Well, it could still be ongoing when these men finally die of old age.
Enjoy your weekend, friend!

Hope you and JtC are doing well, enjoying your weekend. Thanks for the O&E! Looked forward to it each Saturday.

We are doing well, soryang!
Of all things, our project for the weekend is housekeeping. He does all the heavy lifting work, I do the light touch up things. We may get around to watching some movie. Last weekend was "The Searchers". He has a huge collection.
Are you getting more accustomed to your new locale? I sure hope so!
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Yes thanks
Have taken a break for the last two days, except for some light unpacking. I've got to get son in law to stop by to carry some of the heavier stuff upstairs. Most of the most challenging work was administrative, hopefully the light at the end of tunnel is in sight with that.
We're done driving back and forth across the state. I'm sure Ms. So may go once in a while to see old friends. We are gonna miss the greater Daytona area. This area here is too rat race. At the same time, if you can believe it, it's simultaneously, more red neck, more corporate, more digital. Brave new world I guess. Nature and age forced us out of the old time capsule.

You remind me how lucky I am
to live in a quiet, sparsely populated, rural area. I am too old for the rat race life.

I remember the same debate during Vietnam
I think it was Dick Gregory who answered the huffy question of the hour, "but how do we get out?":
SOME DARK NIGHT, LEAVE.
And let's not forget the wisdom of Emily Latella: "That's different. Never mind."
I cried when I wrote this song. Sue me if I play too long.
LOL
I hadn't heard that Gregory quote before.

Excellent.
Thank you for posting this. And in other words, it seems to me, the whole establishment of Israel was an injustice, and therefore the outside power enforcing it (the U.S.) would eventually have to fight to cover for it over and over, expanding and deepening the injustice.
Ditto, LW!
I read a bit about Israel's establishment to have been the brainchild of world bankers. Banks profit from war and oil. Bingo, banksters!
Meanwhile, trying to make sense of the following 9 deaths puts one in the ct category, but facts are facts. 9 scientists at NASA, all working on energy replacement of oil, all knowing the secrets of the technology and development, are dead. One was shot dead on his front porch. No motive, no known suspect, no ongoing investigation. Another disappeared while hiking. No body found, no ongoing investigation. Several scientists died from unknown causes with no autopsy reports made.
It does appear that living in a peaceful world, with clean air, low cost of living, just won't be allowed to happen.
I hope you have a lovely weekend, chica!

Good morning otc. Had a great Horned owl quite nearby calling
Thursday night and Friday morning. Not really the time of year for that, but there you have it. O'possums and trash bandits in the Back Yard nightly, occasional deer in the Front yard even in the daytime off and on. Band Tailed pigeons, endemic to specific parts of CA passing thru right now, huge things with an odd migration pattern that includes Castro Valley and vicinity.
It's hard to track grocery prices unless you limit consideration to a single store. If you're willing to put in the time and travel and be patient, somebody's house brand will be on sale somewhere soon; we have Safeway, Lucky, Trader Joes, Costco, places we never go like food 4 less and sams club, assorted natural places like sprouts, several Mexican super stores and two asian superstores. If you want a specific brand you're looking at one set of prices, but if you just wan't something like canned tomatoes, dried beans or beef bullion (Caldo de rez), there are tons of options and price points. There are things wew are picky about, thing we aren't and the now-and-then special product for a special occasion.
be well and have a good one
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Good afternoon, el!
It is easy for me to do price checks, since there are only 2 grocery stores within a 13 mile radius of my home. Both have store brands. I can buy actual name brand items at Walmart at prices lower than the grocery store sells their store brand. I noted that 4 items I typically buy each week were the same price as last week. Beer, fresh organic asparagus, salsa, packet of taco spices, so that is pretty much from one side of the store to the other, remaining steady for the moment.
I gotta say, I would go crazy if I had as many choices as you, friend!
Well, I can see from the cat's filthy water bowl that we have a raccoon coming around. Oh, well, they were here first, after all.
Enjoy your weekend and avoid the news. All you need to know is there is no good news coming from any direction!

Keeping track of gas prices at the pump
.
the cost for a gallon of gas has risen 50 cents a gallon since
trumpet started his big, beautiful war on Iran. We pay for these
misadventures. Two bags of groceries cost more now than three
before Feb 28. Consumers are feeling the pinch. Woe to the dollar.
Good luck staying afloat.
Zionism is a social disease
When we went to Tomball
last week, prices there, which is considered nowadays to be sort of a suburb of Houston, we filled up on regular at $3.79 per gal. Here at home, it is $3.59. 5 weeks ago, it was around $2.79 per gal. Beef has risen by 15% in Texas. We supply the US and the world with our beef. Although we are still the biggest producer in the country, the rise in feed prices, transport costs, and fertilizer have caused a reduction in herds.
Will beef-like burgers be our only choice?

What we need is America is an anti-PragerU
In today's interview Max Blumenthal names PragerU as part of the "scene" which pushed Trump into Mileikowski's arms.
We need an anti-PragerU.
"I hang out with losers because it makes me feel better. I hate guys that are very, very successful and you have to listen to their success stories. I like people that like to listen to my success.” -- Donald Trump
Our very own Israeli President
This gives such a clear picture of who surrounds Trump and why his second Presidency seems a bit different from his first. We knew he’s influenced by Zionists but he literally fits the description of our “first Israeli president.” Good thing the Iranians are smart, they hopefully realize the ceasefire talks are a sham. After Trump had finished bombing Iran, who’s next? Perhaps he’ll threaten to bomb Norway back to the Stone Age if they don’t give him the Nobel Peace Prize.
Anya
Hey, Anya!
I hope Iran knows what they are doing!
Headlines say we have two battleships in the Strait of Hormuz clearing mines as a pre-condition of the settlement talks. Hmmm...
I would think disarming Israel's nukes would be a better pre-condition, but that's just me.
Enjoy your weekend, chica!

Mirandi calls the real winner in this conflict
* This is good, worth consideration, but some suggest it is AI.

I've noticed a pattern
...to the structure of these AI presentations. It's almost as if the same person is doing all of them. Not with respect to point of view, but the way the presentation is organized.
己所不欲,勿施于人。
I question the authenticity of the presentation
.
Due to the fact Marandi does not speak that fast in general.
His deliverance is usually more paced and considered. If AI
is generating this type of content, it is not nuanced in practical
terms. He does not speak like a New Yorker with rapid fire points.
That is my limited observation.
Zionism is a social disease
Most of the commenters on MoA
say it is fake AI, but there is little or no push back on content.
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Yes, the content seems in line with his thinking
It is the deliverance which is suspect to me.
Maybe he was on speed?
Zionism is a social disease
Stupid question
I’ve seen AI videos where buildings are supposedly being bombed. So if this is AI, Marandi has not said these things?
Anya
He doesn't sound like he normally does,
but the content sounds exactly like something he would say. These ideas are just the kind of historical and analytical ideas he always espouses.
Maybe he will be contacted and can tell us it was good or that it was trash talk.

Breaking news: Vance struck out
It was to be expected I suppose.
The major 'hang-up' is being reported
that US demanded no nukes. But Iran
has not claimed to being a nuke power.
At least USrael didn't bomb them while
negotiations were underway this time (AFAIK).

For whatever reason,
Strange. I cannot open up the link, can't get the website to open. I read that website all the time.
It remains to be seen if the Iranian delegation gets home safely.
I had a thought...if Trump blames this on Vance, and Vance gets enough of Trump's insults, might Vance be more inclined to lead the cabinet in a 25th Am. take over?

This stood out "how to inject some protein and flavor: bullion"
Bullion is MSG, and that's not bad. Despite it's chemical name it also exists in every cell of our body and all living cells. Knor who makes bullion also sells it in powder form of Chicken, Pork, or Beef flavor.
My wife's surefire flavoring rule is equal parts Knorr/sugar/salt. If that sounds too sugary, or salty, then you are overdoing it. For a soup or stir fry for two consider 1/8 teaspoon, or just a pinch in local language. Flavors should make things taste better without being obvious.
Good Sunday morning, ban nock!
Just last week, a lawyer pal and I had lunch, talked about food and energy shortages which are surely coming. She has 2 daughters, ages 11 and 13. They were appalled at her buying big bags of dried beans and big bags of rice. "Mom, that is bad and boring food!" She told them, "You will eat it when there is nothing else to eat, and you won't die." Shortly after our visit, I read an article that addressed the beans and rice survival foods protocol and suggestions for enhancing both flavor and nutrition. Admittedly, bullion hadn't really crossed my mind, but the article showed very simple rice dishes enhanced by bullion, so I added it to the top of my grocery list. I have only used it in soups and stews, but it can certainly add flavors of vegetables and meat that one does not actually have on hand to put in a recipe.
Thanks for your wife's measuring tip! I will write it down and keep it with my other cooking tips collection!
Enjoy your day, friend!
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
@on the cusp My wife refuses to use
My wife refuses to use regular MSG that comes in plastic bags often by the original Japanese manufacturer Ajinomoto, and it's also known by that name in most Asian groceries.
The first few years Asians are here they use MSG as usual, then they learn it's not cool, and say they don't need it, but really they simply substitute Knorr.
It's good to keep large amounts of whatever will keep but also good to use it regularly such that the rice and beans never get old. We keep a few months supply of most things because we buy in bulk when stuff is cheap. If it ever came to that point the world would be basically over anyway.
Very interesting.
I think we have enough in the pantry and freezers to last at least 3 months if stores are empty, and maybe as long as 6 months.
You are right, though. If lack of food, water, power, and waste disposal lasts that long, it is all over but the crying, as the song says.
