OT WE 4 FEB 26 ~ Cuba

Plaza Vieja in Old Havana
~

For some odd reason the US president has decided to regime change Cuba by strangulating
the island nation of Venezuelan and Mexican oil shipments. What a dork. He can not change
the political orientation of the people there. Just another fools errand on the ever growing list.

Suffer us kindly. How the hell in his twisted mind has he proclaimed a 'national emergency' and
issued another idiotic executive order. Like Cuba poses a threat? Now he is threatening countries
that do business with them of 'sanctions'. Which is forcing the Mexican president to ask for details
from Rubio. What a friggen' mess. Dumping crap on a country that is so close to Florida will not
bode well for all involved.

An interesting article from the Orinoco Tribune (Venezuela) regarding policy developments.

Making peace more difficult on an almost daily basis. Oh well. Open thread so take it away.

So far today the empire of chaos has not started a new conflict.
Which is good news, but the day is young. Will see how things
develop. Hope the day holds something positive for y'all.

Interesting statuary.

Congress refuses to do its job and restrain the Don's absurd confrontations with nations which are NOT a threat to the US.

Cuba's ability to survive decades of sanctions is pretty amazing. I'm hoping Trump awoke to the disaster of attacking Iran.

We're due warm weather this weekend and next week. Hope everyone is doing well.

Thanks for the OT!

the balloon to go up on Friday. Why? This news:

Talks between the U.S. and Iran set for Friday will now take place in Oman, a source in the region familiar with the discussions tells me @NewsNation tonight.

https://x.com/KellieMeyerNews/status/2018889437136974222

They have moved the talks to Oman. Last time we did this, we bombed them during the talks, which as you'll recall were taking place in Oman. We do love bombing people while we are talking to them, but we don't like to have our "negotiators" (read "distractions") getting dead along with all those unclean brown people.

The Iranians may have some thoughts about that. After all, they've had time to set up all the targeting coordinates for the all ritzy Omani hotels where such talks might take place this time...

I'd love to be wrong on this. I'm definitely not a fan.

the talks are cancelled.

Nuclear talks between Iran and the U.S. are CANCELED

U.S. officials told Iran 'it's either this or nothing', and they [Iran] said 'Ok, then nothing'

Perhaps the Iranians have realized that investigating that pretty red balloon that is mysteriously coming up out of yonder drainage scupper isn't such a good idea after all...

about talking, there's this. These formerly-important treaties will clearly not be renegotiated, with the current administration in power.

https://x.com/DD_Geopolitics/status/2019120484558991491

No treaty for the first time in over 50 years. Let the games begin.

That's it. For the first time since 1972, Russia (the former USSR) and the US have no treaty limiting strategic nuclear forces. SALT 1, SALT 2, START I, START II, SORT, New START – all in the past.

Get 'em while they are hot, I guess. Is there any wonder why people like me are basically insane, at this point? Damocles laughs.

for the interested student.

https://thebulletin.org/2026/02/the-experts-comment-new-start-expires-br...

To say that the expiration of New START is a concern for many experts and officials in Washington and Moscow would be an understatement.

Former President Barack Obama, who signed New START in 2010, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that letting New START expire “would pointlessly wipe out decades of diplomacy, and could spark another arms race that makes the world less safe.” Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agrees with Obama, with whom he signed the treaty, saying it should “alarm everyone.” (He also suggested this would speed up the Doomsday Clock.)

On Wednesday, Sen. Ed Markey (a Democrat from Massachusetts and the co-chair of the Senate’s Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group, hosted a press conference, urging the Trump administration to recommit the United States to arms control agreements to prevent a new nuclear arms race. “Let’s be honest. America needs another nuclear weapon about as much as Donald Trump deserves a Nobel Peace Prize,” Markey said.

mouthpiece for the repubs, Steve Bannon, has now let the cat out of the bag on how they intend to mechanic the midterms:

"We're gonna have ICE surround the polls come November."

https://x.com/DD_Geopolitics/status/2019062237248258260

I somehow doubt that ICE will become polite and low-profile by then, what with the billions of dollars they were just given in the new budget deal.

I'm glad that I live in a state that does vote-by-mail. Unless, of course, some legislative action at the federal level makes that illegal by then. In which case I'll do exactly what they hope and stay the fuck home.

The joys of living in an openly fascist country, huh?

The fed cop force intends to monitor intimidate polling
places for what reason exactly? Perhaps they have developed a new
weapon called the 'democrat sniffer' to sort-out the voters to achieve
the desired results. The right to vote is no longer guaranteed. Not that
our votes count anyway.

@QMS

something like this in mind: all they would have to do is to harass the voters of all stripes (regardless of whether red or blue) in the bluest precincts in the bluest cities in the bluest states to essentially guarantee a red-team win.

Oh, sure, they would also lose a few red votes, because those people would get carted off to the hospital along with the blue voters that are the true targets of their ire. But I suspect they "honestly" believe that if they can prevent the biggest part of the blue vote from getting cast in the very bluest areas, that they would win big. And their goons would get the pleasure of busting a few repub heads in the process. After all, you can't make omelettes without breaking some eggs, amirite? Collateral damage, as it were: the red people who live in blue areas really should know better.

We've already seen that the focus of ICE's federally-sanctioned violence has been in extremely blue areas to date. I suspect that this will just be a continuation of that general philosophy. Electioneering with federal insignia, flak jackets, guns, and masks: apparently, it is the New American Way.

The election is very likely to be a sham in any case, of course- but that won't stop them. I hope that the state and local authorities in the bluest areas are at least thinking about how to respond to this sort of thing, because it is no longer unthinkable.

quite enlightening as to my lack of success
growing 'maters. Not a natural growing man.
The details involved are almost insurmountable.

Going out to become a pin cushion for an acupuncture treatment
later today. The first approach to this technique was successful
to treat a frozen shoulder a few years ago. This is a more subtle
nerve / balance issue. Can't really fix aging, perhaps alleviate the
consequences? Will see.

were basically numb. Guess I knew that but didn't consider it as
being the reason for balance loss. She inserted a multitude of pins
in the soles and arches, lit them afire (couldn't feel any of that), then
applied a magic wand (of some sort) which directed a focused heat source
around the effected areas before unpinning the feet. In contrast it was
like I had bricks attached to the bottom of my legs instead of sensate
things. Duh! So sitting here now I can again feel some types of pressure
and they do not present as frozen cubes as much. Not sure how much
that will improve balance? Thought it was in my head. But it definitely helps.
Getting sensory feedback from the extremities does create a better balance.

as far as that goes, as a source of frequent pain, unfortunately, but that doesn't rule anything out I suspect.

but it does not get you anywhere. Using pigs to control the outcome of a hackable election count is a very inefficient way to rule the world.

If and when you see armed, masked "officers of the law," surrounding polling stations, it will already be too late to do anything about it. If the point is that it is already too late to stop "fascism," what is the point of singing the blues about it?

The GOP emails they keep sending me are almost entirely about the likelihood of impeachment in 2027. Maybe just an AI error, but my reading of the tea leaves is that the game plan includes an impeachment fight in the streets. That presumes the dems win the midterms, which is not likely the result Trump, the person, really wants.

The underlying quandary is how much is Trump in Charge of himself? He puts significant effort into telling the world that his personal whims are LAW.

I don't buy the idea that billionaires pony up billions of dollars so that Trump can be Czar. No, they are buying a tool.
