"Russia invades Ukraine claiming there’s a NATO proxy force directly on its border = Crazy. Evil. Worse than Hitler.

US invades Venezuela claiming China is making energy deals there thousands of miles from the US border = Fine. Normal. Monroe Doctrine. Just wish he’d asked Congress."

News and Opinion

The Real Tyrannical Regime

Right wingers are like “Listen to Venezuelans! No, not the Venezuelans in the streets demanding Maduro’s return. No, not the polls saying most people in Venezuela oppose US regime change. Those are the wrong Venezuelans. I meant listen to the Venezuelan talking to Fox News from his mansion in Miami.”

They’re like, “Trump needed to invade Venezuela and abduct its president because otherwise that poor country would be victimized by the whims of a despotic tyrant!”

Actually fellas I’m pretty sure the real tyrannical regime is the one who’s claiming the entire western hemisphere is their personal property and they get to control what happens in every country on half the planet.

Pretty sure what’s tyrannical is invading a country, murdering scores of people, and abducting its leader in order to steal control of its resources.

I kinda think the real tyrant on the scene is whoever’s trying to rule the world and aggressively targeting any country anywhere on the planet that resists that agenda.

Like maybe a really good example of tyranny would be constantly toppling governments and starting wars of aggression and targeting civilian populations with starvation sanctions and waging proxy conflicts and dropping bombs and interfering in elections and circling the planet with hundreds of military bases and working to kill, subvert and subjugate any population anywhere on earth if they disobey your commands.

Pretty sure the tyrant we actually need to worry about is whoever’s doing that.

‘I don’t need international law’: Trump says power constrained only by ‘my own morality’

Donald Trump has said that he does not “need international law” and that his power is limited only by his “own morality”. In a new interview with the New York Times, Trump said the only constraint to his power as president of the US is “my own morality, my own mind”. “It’s the only thing that can stop me,” Trump said, adding: “I’m not looking to hurt people.” He went on to concede “I do” in regards to whether his administration needed to adhere to international law, but said: “It depends on what your definition of international law is.” ...

Trump also dismissed concerns that his decision to oust Nicolás Maduro as Venezuela’s president would set the precedent of a potential Chinese takeover of Taiwan or Russia’s attempt to control Ukraine. Justifying the US’s attacks on Venezuela, Trump repeated his controversial claims Maduro had allegedly sent gang members into the US.

He said that he does not believe Chinese president Xi Jinping would seize control of Taiwan, telling the New York Times: “That’s up to him, what he’s going to be doing. But you know, I’ve expressed to him that I would be very unhappy if he did that and I don’t think he’ll do that. I hope he doesn’t.” Trump added: “He may do it after we have a different president but I don’t think he’s going to do it with me as president.”

Trump chides dissenting GOP senators over resolution to curb military action in Venezuela

The president said that senators Lisa Murkowski, Todd Young, Josh Hawley, Susan Collins, and Rand Paul “should never be elected to office again”.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump added that today’s vote “greatly hampers American Self Defense and National Security, impeding the President’s Authority as Commander in Chief”. He also called the War Powers Resolution – which inhibits a president’s ability to commit to an armed conflict without approval from Congress – as “unconstitutional”.

Today’s procedural motion, tees up a full vote on the measure in the Senate. It’s longterm fate, however, remains precarious. The bill would still need to pass the House and would require Trump’s signature.

Trump SHOCKED After Venezuela Oil Backlash, BRICS Conflict Looms

White House Says It Will ‘Dictate’ the Decisions of the Venezuelan Government

The White House on Wednesday claimed that the US would be “dictating” the decisions of the Venezuelan government moving forward, as the Trump administration is attempting to control Venezuela’s oil supply following the US abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. ...

President Trump is also threatening to bomb Venezuela again and potentially send troops if the government doesn’t do the bidding of the US, and appeared to threaten Rodriguez’s life by saying she would have a fate worse than Maduro if she didn’t fall in line. ...

Venezuela’s state oil company, PDVSA, said in a statement that it was advancing an oil sale to the US and that it would be similar to deals with Chevron, the US oil firm that has continued to operate in the country. “The process … is based on strictly commercial transactions under terms that are legal, transparent and beneficial for both parties,” PDVSA said.

In a follow-up post on Wednesday, Trump claimed that under the deal, Venezuela will be purchasing US goods with the money made from the sale. “I have just been informed that Venezuela is going to be purchasing ONLY American Made Products, with the money they receive from our new Oil Deal,” he said.

The president continued, “These purchases will include, among other things, American Agricultural Products, and American Made Medicines, Medical Devices, and Equipment to improve Venezuela’s Electric Grid and Energy Facilities. In other words, Venezuela is committing to doing business with the United States of America as their principal partner – A wise choice, and a very good thing for the people of Venezuela, and the United States.”

Venezuela cooperating fully and US will control its oil for years, Trump claims

The US is receiving full cooperation from Venezuela’s regime and will control the country and its vast oil reserves for years, Donald Trump has claimed. Caracas was giving Washington “everything that we feel is necessary” and the US would remain a political overlord there for an indefinite period, the US president said.

“We will rebuild it in a very profitable way,” Trump told the New York Times. “We’re going to be using oil, and we’re going to be taking oil.” Asked how long the White House would demand direct oversight of Venezuela, he said “only time will tell”. Asked if it would be longer than a year, he replied: “I would say much longer.”

US protester arrested after TV interview says she was targeted due to Venezuela trip

Jessica Plichta was arrested on 3 January after a live interview with a local news station about a Grand Rapids, Michigan, protest against the Trump administration’s seizure of Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s president, in an attack with a reported death toll of 100. The clip went immediately viral, racking up millions of views across social media. While the headlines focused on Plichta’s age (22) and that she’s a preschool teacher, Plichta believes the reason for her arrest – seemingly the only one among roughly 200 protesters – went beyond the day’s events.

Plichta, who recently co-founded local group Grand Rapids Opponents of War, which helped organize Saturday’s protest, had visited the Venezuelan capital of Caracas just last month, amid the Trump administration’s blockade. She was a part of a delegation to the International People’s Assembly for Sovereignty and Peace of Our Americas. Activists from dozens of groups planned to attend. But after Trump ordered that Venezuelan airspace be “closed in its entirety” on 29 November, many canceled their trips.

Plichta still attended, visiting communes and meeting with activists there, and claims she even spoke with Maduro. “I came back to the US, and I’ve done report-backs. I had spoken at that rally. I gave an interview, and immediately, during the interview, I get shut down and arrested out of 200 people. So what else can you say about that?” Plichta said.

Plichta is now facing misdemeanor charges of “obstructing a roadway and failure to obey a lawful command from a police officer”, according to local outlet 13 On Your Side.

At least 13 killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza, including five children, civil defence agency says

Gaza’s civil defence agency said Israeli attacks in the Palestinian territory on Thursday killed at least 13 people, including five children, despite a ceasefire that has largely halted the fighting. Four people including three children were killed when a drone struck a tent sheltering displaced people in southern Gaza, agency spokesperson Mahmud Bassal told AFP.

In the north of the Gaza Strip, an 11-year-old girl was killed near the Jabalia refugee camp and a strike on a school killed one person, while a drone near Khan Younis in the south killed a man, the agency added. Two more Palestinians in Gaza, including a child, were killed in other attacks, reported the agency, which operates under Hamas authority.

When asked by AFP, the Israeli military said it was checking the reports.

Later on Thursday evening, four more people were killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a house in an eastern area of Gaza City, Bassal said, adding that rescue work to search for several people who were missing had begun. “The death toll has risen to 13 as a result of Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip since this morning in a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement,” he said. ...

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem told AFP that the strikes in Gaza on Thursday “confirm the Israeli occupation’s renunciation of its commitment to the ceasefire”. Israeli forces have killed at least 425 Palestinians in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

House bill passes to extend ACA subsidies

The House of Representatives has passed legislation that would extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies, 230-196, with a handful of Republicans joining with Democrats to pass the measure despite opposition from Republican leadership.

“Health care costs have skyrocketed for millions of families and this legislation will help bring costs down. This is a win for the American people,” the House Democratic Caucus wrote in a social media post.

The legislation would extend ACA subsidies by three years. The bill will now move to the Senate where pressure to pass a similar bipartisan healthcare agreement is growing.

ICE's Killing Spree Is Just Getting Started

FBI takes over case of ICE agent killing US woman and cuts Minnesota’s access to evidence

The FBI has taken full control of the investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) officer in Minneapolis, it emerged on Thursday.

In a statement, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said it was initially called upon to help investigate the shooting before federal officials “reversed course” and said the case would be “solely led by the FBI”. With its access to the case materials, witnesses and evidence revoked, the BCA said it had to “reluctantly” withdraw from the investigation.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, homeland security secretary Kristi Noem denied that the BCA had been cut out of the investigation and said it was a matter of jurisdiction. “They have not been cut,” she said. “They don’t have any jurisdiction in this investigation.”

But Minnesota’s governor Tim Walz told a news conference that “Minnesota must be part of this investigation. It feels very, very difficult that we will get a fair outcome. And I say that only because people in positions of power have already passed judgment.”

Indeed, the reversal from federal law enforcement comes as the Trump administration continues to justify Wednesday’s deadly shooting by accusing Good of engaging in “an act of domestic terrorism” and claiming that the ICE agent who shot her was acting in “self-defense”, alleging she had tried to run him over. That narrative is at odds with video footage of the incident, which has been widely shared online.

"What Are You Hiding?" Minnesota AG Keith Ellison Says ICE Killing Must Be Investigated

ICE agent in Minneapolis killing identified as 10-year law enforcement veteran

The ICE agent involved in the lethal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an immigration sweep in Minneapolis on Wednesday is Jonathan E Ross, according to court records that closely match the description of a June 2025 incident involving the agent in Bloomington, Minnesota, cited by the homeland security secretary, Kristi Noem, and JD Vance. Ross is a Minnesota resident and 10-year veteran of the special response team of ICE’s enforcement and removal operation.

In a statement to the Guardian, Tricia McLaughlin, assistant DHS secretary, said: “We are not going to expose the name of this officer. He acted according to his training.”

According to court records, Ross was involved in the June arrest of Roberto Carlos Muñoz, an undocumented Mexican immigrant with an open immigration detainer and a criminal conviction for sexually assaulting his 16-year-old stepdaughter in 2022. Muñoz was contacted at his residence in Bloomington, Minnesota, by a group of federal agents on 19 June 2025.

According to an affidavit from an FBI agent, Muñoz was in his car when federal law enforcement approached him. He did not comply with commands to get out of his vehicle and drove away. The feds pursued Muñoz and conducted a traffic stop. An ERO agent and an FBI agent approached the car and ordered Muñoz in both English and Spanish to put the car in park and provide documentation, which he did. When the ERO agent ordered Muñoz to exit the car, he refused.

At this point, according to the affidavit, the ERO agent broke the rear driver’s side window of Muñoz’s car and tried to unlock the driver’s door. Muñoz threw the car into drive, speeding off with the agent trapped in the vehicle by his arm and dragged behind the car for 100 yards down the street along the curb, weaving past several cars. The agent was jarred loose from the window and fell into the street, and Muñoz drove off. The agent suffered serious lacerations on both arms, which required 33 stitches in total to close.

Two people shot by US federal agents in Portland, police say

US federal agents shot two people in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon, Portland police said. “Two people are in the hospital following a shooting involving federal agents,” the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) said in a statement, adding that their conditions were not known. The PPB said its officers were not involved in the shooting.

“At 2.24pm, officers received information that a man who had been shot was calling and requesting help in the area of Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside,” police said. “Officers responded and found a male and female with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers applied a tourniquet and summoned emergency medical personnel. The patients were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown. “Officers have determined the two people were injured in the shooting involving federal agents.”

Maxine Dexter, a Democratic congresswoman who represents East Portland, said in a statement: “Just one day after the horrific murder in Minneapolis, I received reports that two people in my district were shot by federal immigration officials this afternoon in East Portland. Both individuals are alive, but we do not know the extent of their injuries.” She added: “ICE has done nothing but inject terror, chaos, and cruelty into our communities. Trump’s immigration machine is using violence to control our communities – straight out of the authoritarian playbook. ICE must immediately end all active operations in Portland.”

Dexter also demanded a local police investigation. “We must allow our local law enforcement to do its work,” she said. “There must be a comprehensive investigation without Trump’s interference.”

US congressmen ask judge to appoint official to force release of all Epstein files

Two US House of Representatives members have asked a federal judge to appoint a special master to compel the justice department to release all files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender. On Thursday, Democratic representative Ro Khanna of California and Republican representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky asked US district judge Paul Engelmayer to release the full Epstein files, as required by the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

Criticizing the justice department for not releasing the full set of files on last year’s 19 December deadline, Khanna and Massie in a letter said: “The conduct by the DOJ is not only a flagrant violation of the mandatory disclosure obligations under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, but as this Court has recognized in its previous rulings, the behavior by the DOJ has caused serious trauma to survivors.

“As the leads of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, we have urgent and grave concerns about DOJ’s failure to comply with the Act as well as the Department’s violations of this Court’s order,” the representatives said, adding: “Put simply, the DOJ cannot be trusted with making mandatory disclosures under the Act.”

Pointing to a justice department court filing earlier this week stating that 12,285 documents have been released – marking less than 1% of all related files – and that 2 million more are under review, Khanna and Massie casted doubt on those figures.

“Because these figures are self-reported and internally inconsistent with prior representations, there is reasonable suspicion that the DOJ has overstated the scope of responsive materials, thereby portraying compliance as unmanageable and effectively delaying disclosure,” they said in the letter.

Democrats Launch Probe to Learn What Trump Told Oil Giants About Venezuela Attack—and When

Democrats in the US Senate on Wednesday launched a formal investigation into possible dealings between the Trump administration and oil company executives related to Saturday’s military assault on Venezuela, the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro, and the effort now underway to seize and control the Latin American nation’s vast oil reserves.

Led by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.)—ranking member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW)—the Democratic lawmakers, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and others, want to know more about “communications between major U.S. oil and oilfield services companies and the Trump Administration surrounding last week’s military action in Venezuela and efforts to exploit Venezuelan oil resources.”

Following Saturday’s strikes on Venezuela and the kidnapping of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores—which international law experts have said were clear breaches of both international law and US constitutional law–Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that he had spoken to oil executives both “before and after” the covert military actions.

While other White House officials walked back Trump’s statements, the senators behind the investigation say they want to know more about what was discussed, with whom, and when.

According to a statement, the lawmakers are “requesting documents and information regarding the companies’ knowledge of the strikes, discussions with Trump Administration officials before and since the operation, and plans to invest in Venezuela from the CEOs of BP America Inc., Baker Hughes, Chevron, Citgo Petroleum Corporation, ConocoPhillips, Continental Resources, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, SLB, Shell USA, Inc., and Weatherford International.”

In a series of letters to the heads of those oil giants, the senators said, “President Trump’s own statements justifying the operation in terms of access to foreign energy resources and benefits to the US oil industry, reported repeated engagement between industry and government, and the suggestion that taxpayers could pay the cost of rebuilding Venezuela’s oil infrastructure raise serious concerns about how the Trump Administration engaged with the oil companies prior to his decision to use military force in Venezuela.”

“We would like to know,” the letters continue, “the extent to which US oil and gas companies such as yours had either advance knowledge of or the ability to shape American foreign policy decisions—especially given that Congress was kept in the dark concerning the use of force until after the strikes occurred.”

The lawmakers noted that Trump has also suggested that US taxpayer funds would be used to “help companies cover their costs to rebuild Venezuelan oil infrastructure,” spend they warned could “cost American taxpayers billions more in the form of subsidies for the fossil fuel industry, which already benefits from over $700 billion annually in subsidies,” citing analysis by the International Monetary Fund.

Germany’s dying forests are losing their ability to absorb CO2.

Even the intense green of late spring cannot mask the dead trees in the Harz mountains. Standing upright across the gentle peaks in northern Germany, thousands of skeletal trunks mark the remnants of a once great spruce forest. Since 2018, the region has been ravaged by a tree-killing bark beetle outbreak, made possible by successive droughts and heatwaves. It has transformed a landscape known for its verdant beauty into one dominated by a sickly grey.

The loss has sparked a reckoning with the modern forestry methods pioneered by Germany that often rely on expanses of monoculture plantations. The ferocity of the beetle outbreak means there is no going back to the old way of doing things: replacing the dead spruce with saplings from the same species would probably guarantee catastrophe once again.

Instead, foresters have been experimenting with a different approach: pockets of beech, firs and sycamore have been planted around the surviving spruce to make sure the returning forest is more biodiverse. They hope that planting a mixture of species will make the returning landscape more resilient. “There have been times where we did not have any confidence in what we were doing,” says Mathias Aßmann, a spokesperson for the regional forestry company responsible for this part of the range, pointing out the scars in the landscape from the top of a hill. ...

Vast diebacks, such as those seen in the Harz mountains, are becoming increasingly common in Europe as the climate heats, bringing extreme weather and drought. During the peak of the bark beetle outbreak from 2018 to 2021, Germany lost half a million hectares (more than 1.2m acres) of forest – nearly 5% of the country’s total. The Czech Republic has lost even more in relative terms and Norway, Sweden, France and Finland are experiencing changes as Europe’s ecosystems strain under increased heat and drought. New research from the UK indicates that ancient woodland is increasingly struggling to regenerate. Foresters in Greece report huge diebacks of the country’s firs, and peatlands across Europe are drying out.

The consequences are starting to filter through in official statistics. In July, scientists released a significant downwards revision of how much carbon is being removed by land in the EU, driven by the weakening forest carbon sink. Since 2010, the amount absorbed by land has fallen by a third and continues to decline. Figures published in 2024 in Germany show a major spike in emissions between 2017 and 2022 from the bark beetle outbreak and drought, mirroring other member states. The speed of the fall in the amount of carbon removed by Europe’s forests was not expected, say experts, and is already pushing climate targets out of reach.

US national parks staff say new $100 fee for non-residents risks ‘alienating visitors for decades’

A new $100 fee for foreign tourists entering US national parks has triggered chaos and frustrating waits, with staff reporting long entry lines as citizenship checks are made and irate visitors regularly ditching plans to patronize some of America’s most cherished landscapes.

The new fee system, introduced by the Trump administration from 1 January, has caught many visitors and National Park Service (NPS) staff off-guard, with checks now having to be undertaken to assess nationality and tourists often turning away from entrances rather than pay the surcharge. The Guardian heard accounts of problems from several NPS staff, speaking anonymously, who work at different parks across the country.

Environmental advocates have argued that the newly tiered fees are also illegal under federal law and are suing to reverse them. Under the new system, every person who is not a resident of the US and visits any of 11 popular national parks, including the Grand Canyon, Everglades and Yellowstone, now has to pay the $100 charge along with the existing park entrance fee. An annual pass providing access to all parks for non-residents has increased in price, from $80 to $250.

This means that cars or buses full of tourists face a steep new cost, especially if they plan to visit just one national park. NPS staff told the Guardian this has led to anger and confusion at several national parks, with a lack of signage and online warnings about the new regime and even a shortage of the new annual passes which, for US residents, now include a photo of Donald Trump on them – a portrait that if covered with a sticker will invalidate the pass.

“It’s been chaos, for staff it has been very trying,” said one staffer who works at the entrance gate of a major park in the US west, who did not want to be named. Some cars full of tourists have been faced with costs of $600 or more in total, they added. “A lot of people just turn around, some people yell and get angry. It’s an outrageous fee, it’s like we are telling people we don’t want them here. It’s not in the spirit of national parks.”

But, that's just me.

when i found out that the national park pass had the spooky picture of trump on it that you can't cover without invalidating the pass, i started to wonder if you can draw horns on trump or a little adolf mustache and still get admitted to a park.
